StatementA statement is a sentence that simply gives

information. It ends with a period. We call these declarative sentences.

My teacher is Mr. Gonzalez.

I live in Washington.

Yesterday my mom went to the store.

QuestionA question asks for information. It often begins with

the words who, what, when, where, how or why. A question ends with a question mark. We call these interrogative sentences.

Who is your teacher?

Where do you live?

Did she really mean it?

ExclamationAn exclamation is a sentence that expresses a strong

emotion, like fear, anger, or surprise. It ends with an exclamation point. We call these exclamatory sentences.

The house is on fire!

I am so surprised by your behavior!

Wow!

CommandA command is a sentence that tells someone to do

something, or to think or believe something. It can end with a period or an exclamation point if you want to make it stronger. We call these imperative sentences.

Today’s activity:1.Fold/divide your paper into four quarters.2.Select a picture from the picture file. Use a glue stick to glue it to the center of your paper.3.Label each quarter with the following titles:

• DECLARATIVE• INTERROGATIVE• EXCLAMATORY• IMPERATIVE

4.In each box, write 5 great sentences that go with your picture. The sentences should be examples of each type. Really demonstrate that you know how each sentence type is constructed.
