Why solar water heating? Whatever your reasons for wanting
to reduce your energy consumption, you will want to know what to dofirst. Conservation yields the largestreduction of energy in exchangefor your precious time and money.The next biggest bang for your buck comes from directly heating your water with the sun. Installing aproperly sized solar water heating system, can save 60 percent to 90percent of the energy used to heat hot
water per year, which makes up about15 percent to 20 percent of a typicalhousehold’s energy outlay. Bringing up the rear, in terms of return on yourinvestment is generating electricity
from a grid connected photovoltaic
(PV) system. Further, it makes senseto do everything you feasibly can toreduce your electricity use before yousize your PV system.
Sizing
To size a solar water heating system that meets your family’sneed; first estimate the size of thestorage reservoir by estimating 20gallons for the first two people and15 gallons for each additional person.If the estimated water use exceeds
80 gallons, use a 120-gallon tank.Then base the collector area on theactual tank size chosen. East of theCascades, 1.5 to 1.75 gallons of waterstorage to 1-square foot of collector
area may be an appropriate ra
For example, a family of five re85 gallons, next size up to the nlargest available tank size, whi120 gallons, then divide 120 bybecause there should be 1.5 timmore storage capacity than sqfeet of collector area. Siting and Orienting Similar siting and orientation
considerations apply whether you are installing collectorsto heat water or whether youare installing collectors toproduce power. The University of Oregon’s Solar RadiationMonitoring Laboratory providesa paper entitled “Evaluating aSite’s Solar Potential,” for evalu-ating a site for PV collectors, athttp://solardat.uoregon.edu/download/Papers/Evaluating_a_Site_Solar_Potential.pdf
However, if you have a south
facing surface, with plenty of room, that is not encumberedby shading and is close to yourpoint of use, then you don’tneed to do much evaluation.Keep in mind; shading does
not preclude the effective-ness of a solar water heating
system. Obstacles on thehorizon lower than 10 degrees will have a negligible effect.In the summer shading before8 a.m. and after 4 p.m. andin the winter shading before9 a.m. and after 3 p.m. willhave almost no effect. The siteshould be unshaded for at leastfour hours between 8:30 a.m.and 4 p.m.
The performance of a solar water heating system is alsoa function of the tilt of the
collectors. A tilt of 10 degreesmore than the latitude willmaximize collection during the winter months. The latitude of Ellensburg is 47 degrees, so therecommended tilt is 57 degrees.

of “Solar Hot Water SystemsLessons Learned 1977 to Today,”“only two types of active systemscan survive in climates thatexperience freezes every yearand/or have extremely hardscaling or acidic water: closed-loop drainback systems andclosed-loop anti-freeze systems with well thought out heatexchange … systems ...” Morespecifically, his favorite systemis a double-pumped drainback system with a heat exchanger

Payback
To illustrate how quickly it will takea system to pay for itself (payback),the following scenario is provided as
an example. An existing electric hot water
heater uses 5,846 kWh/year andthe current cost of electricity is.075/kWh. It is estimated that youcan save 75 percent of the energy
used to heat domestic hot water perfamily per year by installing a solar water heating system. Therefore$329/year is the savings that can beexpected by installing a solar waterheating system. The total cost of thesolar water heating system is $5,747,after deducting the federal tax credit. Therefore, it will take 17 yearsfor the system to pay for itself, andgiven that the system is estimated tolast a minimum of 30 years, the sun will be heating 75 percent of your water for free for 13 years.
Incentives At this time (April 2008), the only
incentive available to Kittitas County
homeowners who install a sola water heating system is a $2,00federal personal tax credit andset to expire on Dec. 31, 2008.
Permits
Kittitas County provided thiresponse when I requested a pfor our project: “At this time, KCounty does not regulate, perotherwise oversee the use, instion, or maintenance of solar heating systems (with the excof new construction plumbinTherefore, the system that youpropose does not require a pethrough our office.”

Good news for power tool fans: Cordlesstools are getting more powerful, lighter weight, more ergonomic and more affordable.Not only that, they’re getting green.
Those were among the advances on display at this year’s National Hardware Show, anindustry-only event of 3,500 exhibitors who
showcased the latest in just about anything you can find at your local hardware store,home center or lawn and garden center.
As in other industries, the emphasis now ison environmentalism. Here are a few of thehighlights:
Paint
Paint manufacturers have been working for years to reduce paint toxicity by lowering volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that arebad for our environment. Now companiessuch as Mythic paint have come out with
zero VOC, nontoxic, ultra low odor paint thatprovides the durability and coverage one would expect from a premium paint. Thepaint is free of solvents, dispersants, surfac-tants, preservatives and other carcinogensthat are ingredients in most traditional paints.

Mowers
Cordless mowers powered by recharge-
able batteries have been around for about adecade and continue to grow in popularity since they don’t produce emissions. However,push-reel mowers are coming back as a greenalternative. The only energy that they use arecalories burned by the operator, and there isno harmful exhaust. Today’s push reel mowers
aren’t what you may remember while growing up. They are lighter, easier to maneuver anddo a great job of cutting.
Drain clogs
Using toxic chemicals to clear a cloggeddrain is anything but green. The alternative isto call a plumber or attempt to clear the clog using a drain snake, which can be cumber-some at best and lead to a real mess.

Many homeowners are new to our area.They very likely have a new home with anempty yard containing some turf and no trees,flowers, or shrubs. Obviously landscaping
is going to be high on the list of priorities. If the new homeowner has a small budget forlandscaping, they probably will be considering doing the landscaping themselves. This can bea very intimidating proposition.
Trying to figure out where to start when trying to design a new landscape isoverwhelming, in part because there is somuch information out there! Just go to any bookstore and you will see whole shelves of books devoted to the subject. So, if a homegardener sticks to a few basics, things will begreatly simplified.
Site Assessment
The first place to start in any landscapeis to see what is already there. Draw amap, showing the locations of your house, walkways, your garage, or any other struc-tures such as a garden shed or fencing,
utilities such as septic and drain field, orunderground pipes or electrical. Don’t forgetabout mapping structures that are on the lotline, such as your neighbor’s garage, fencing or trees. Also include location of lawn, orany trees, shrubs, or any flowers that arealready there.
Another thing to figure out is “What kindof soil do you have?” Soils can be sand,loam, or clay and can be deficient in oneof the three major nutrients; nitrogen (N),
phosphorous (P), or potash (K) (also calledpotassium). You also will need to know thepH (alkalinity or acidity) of your soil. Every home gardener should have a baseline soiltest done that tests for NPK. Visit your localMaster Gardener Plant diagnostic clinic forinformation on soil testing.

Knowing what kind of soil youhave and its fertility, will tell youhow you should manage yourlandscape, primarily how toirrigate it and to some degree, what you can plant in the area.
Design Considerations
Try to keep in mind whatactivities might be taking placein the space. Think about how a person would move through
the landscape. Where are thepathways and which pathwayscan’t be changed, such as routesto the garbage, mailbox orcars. Also consider where trees,fences and other elements (suchas a pond) might be incorpo-
rated into the landscape.Next, consider the sun
and how it moves around alandscape. Do you want areasthat keep cool in the summer,but let in sunlight and warmthduring the winter? Well-placedtrees can help cool your houseand reduce air conditioning costs up to 30 percent. By using a tree windbreak around your home, you can lowerfuel consumption by 10 to 25
percent. Windbreaks reduceand shift air movement aroundbuildings, which minimizesheat loss from the walls of ahouse or building.
Another factor to think aboutis how much shade an area
gets. If you have a semi-shadedor densely shaded garden site,then you might want to considerputting in shade loving plantssuch as hosta, astilbe, Jacob’sladder, tiarella, or ferns.
Large plants can be plantedsingly. Smaller plants are bestplanted in groups or “drifts”of three, five or seven. Avoidplanting in straight, even rows, which look unnatural and arebest used in formal landscapes.
Keep in mind that informalshapes are easier to maintainthan formal groupings, becausethey are less labor intensive.Plantings should have curvedlines, varied plant heights,plants should be placed in

Uses and Goals
for the Landscape
Next ask yourself, “What aresome of the goals and uses forthis landscape?” Consider someof the following:
a. Is this a landscape that willbe used by pets or children? If so, you might want to providea section of the yard to be usedas a play area. It would beimportant to get a list of plantsthat are poisonous to kids andpets, so you can avoid planting anything that would endanger
your children or pets (list avail-able through the WSU MasterGardener plant diagnostic clinic).
b. Do you want sitting areassuch as patios or decks forentertaining guests? If so, decideon the number if guests you arelikely to entertain, which willhelp dictate how large a deck orpatio you will build.
c. Do you want to attract birds,butterflies or other wildlife to your yard and garden? If theanswer is yes, then get familiar
with what plants provide seeds,berries, nuts, nectar, browse andhabitat for visiting wildlife.
Once all this has been consid-ered, take pictures of the area tobe landscaped and draw a bird’seye view of it on paper. Draw upthe new landscape design ontoanother piece of paper, making sure that the new landscapedesign is simple, convenient,and inviting.
Dene Your Gardening Style
Another thing to keep in mindis what style of landscaping appeals to you and what willlook good with your home.Some people like a very formallandscape, which might lenditself to a home with straight,
geometric lines. A cute little bungalow would
probably look best with acottage-style garden which is amix of many herbs, perennials,and shrubs, and perhaps anarbor or bird bath. This is a very high-maintenance garden.
There is the orientallandscape, which employsthe use of water, rocks andevergreens and a variety of plants, and might include atraditional Japanese Zen garden.This is also a very high-mainte-nance garden
Woodland gardens are anatural-looking style of gardenthat uses the fauna that grows ina wooded area. This would be agood choice for gardeners whodo not wish to spend a lot of time on maintenance.
An informal-style landscape
incorporates and uses gardenbeds with curved edges. Plants are
arranged in seemingly randompatterns. This is also a lower-maintenance landscape thatmight be a good choice if you havechildren that will be playing in your yard and garden area.
Choosing Plants
for Your Landscape
There are a wide range of plants to choose from. Beforepicking out plants, you shouldassess how much water you will
use and how much maintenance you are willing to do. If you loveto be in the garden and have lotsof time to spare, go ahead andput in a cottage garden, but if time is the issue, you will wantto choose plants that are hardy and disease resistant and are

relatively easy to take care of.Some easy and depend-
able plants are as follow:Daylilies (Hemerocallis ,peonies (Paeonia), Columbine(Aquilegia), Leopard’s Bane(Doronicum orientale), Cranes-bill (Geranium) — ( these aretrue geraniums, your ‘Martha Washington’ type of geraniumsare really Pelargonium), Blanket-flower (Gaillardia x grandiflora),Coralbells (Heuchera), Bigleaf Ligularia (Ligularia dentata),Goldenrods (Solidago), andRussian sage (Perovskia
atriplicifolia).
Consider Creating
a Low Impact Landscape
If you are concerned withhaving a environmentally friendly, low-impact garden,
consider using native and xeric(drought tolerant) plants. Why
use native plants? Native plantsare plants that naturally occur inour area and are adapted to thelocal climate and soil condi-tions. These plants generally use less water and fertilizer, andneed less upkeep than non-native (introduced) plants. They also tend to be more disease-and insect-resistant than many of your more commonly usedornamentals. Disease and insectresistance holds true for xericplants, as well. By using native
and xeric plants, you will reducethe amount of pesticide that youuse in the garden.
In Conclusion
Planning a new landscapedoesn’t have to be intimidating,
and in fact can be fun. Knowing what information is needed,
will help you tackle doing someplanning for your landscapeand yard. Given a bit of timeand forethought, any gardenershould be able to come up witha great landscape plan!

The flavor of vinegar was alittle too strong for Germansettlers in the early days of theCarolinas, so they decided toadd tomatoes to sweeten uptheir barbecue sauces.
Now, tomato-based saucehas become the way to go forbarbecue enthusiasts acrossmost of the South, with theaddition of molasses or brownsugar making the taste sweeterthe farther west you move.
This is a speedy version of
traditional slow-barbecued ribs.Most of the cooking is donehands-off in the oven, with afinal quick stint on the grill toform a nice crust.
Easy memphis-stylebarbecued porkspareribs
Recipe from Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby’s ‘‘Grill It!,’’ DK Publishing, 2008
Start to nish: 4 hours (1 hour active)Servings: 4 to 6
For the barbecue rub:• 1/3 cup kosher salt
• 1/3 cup reshly ground blackpepper• 1/4 cup dark brown sugar• 2 tablespoons paprika• 2 tablespoons chili powder•
2 tablespoons cumin• 2 tablespoons ground coriander• 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper• 1 tablespoon ginger• 2 racks pork spareribs, about 3pounds each
For the sauce:• 1 cup ketchup• 1/3 cup cider vinegar• 1/4 cup brown sugar• 1/4 cup orange juice• 2 tablespoons brown mustard• 1/2 teaspoon Liquid Smoke
(optional)• Kosher salt and reshly groundblack pepper, to taste
Preheat the oven to 200 F.To prepare the rub, in a
small bowl combine the salt,
pepper, brown sugar, paprika,chili powder, cumin, coriander,cayenne and ginger. Use the rubto thoroughly coat the ribs.
Arrange the ribs on baking
sheets and roast until themeat is tender and pulls easily from the bone, about 3 hours.Remove the ribs from the ovenand set aside.
While the ribs cook, prepare thesauce. In a small bowl, combinethe ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar,orange juice, mustard and LiquidSmoke. Set aside.
When the ribs are nearly done, preheat a grill to low with the grate at the highestsetting. Grill the ribs for 10 to 20
minutes per side, or until a lightcrust has formed. Brush the ribs with the sauce during the finalminute of cooking.

Barbecue purists in easternNorth Carolina claim there’sonly one way to cook pork: withvinegar. The concept dates to thedays of Thomas Jefferson andgenerally requires little more
than cider vinegar, red pepperand maybe some salt.This recipe uses the pork
butt — also called the Bostonbutt — and contains part of theshoulder blade. Rick Browne,author of ‘‘The Best Barbecueon Earth,’’ says this cut isideal for smoking, as the bonetransfers heat to the center andadds flavor.
To prepare this recipe, youalso will need about 1 cup woodchips for smoking (available
alongside grilling supplies) andheavy-duty foil. Charcoal or gasgrills can be used; total grilling time is about 6 hours.
Carolina-style pulledpork butt

plus overnight marinatingServings: 6 to 8
• 1/2 cup bourbon• 2 tablespoons molasses• 1 1/2 cups cider vinegar• 1 cup water• 2 dried chipotle chilies,rehydrated and chopped• 4 tablespoons salt, divided• 1 tablespoon crushed redpepper fakes• 2 tablespoons reshly groundblack pepper• 5- to 6-pound boneless porkbutt (shoulder)• 2 tablespoons paprika• 1 tablespoon garlic powder• 2 tablespoons cayenne• Hamburger buns, or serving• Cole slaw, or serving
In a large bowl, combine thebourbon, molasses, vinegar, water, chipotles, 2 tablespoons of the salt, red pepper flakes, and 1tablespoon of the black pepper.Stir well and set aside.
Place the pork shoulder in alarge zip-close plastic bag. Pourthe marinade over the pork,then seal the bag, pressing out asmuch air as possible. Refrigeratefor 6 to 9 hours.
At least 2 hours before you are
ready to cook the pork, placeabout 1 cup of wood chips in abowl, then cover with water andlet soak for at least 2 hours.
Once the pork has marinated,remove it from the bag and set ona large plate and set aside. Pourthe marinade into a mediumsaucepan, then boil for 12minutes to use for basting and asa sauce. Set aside.
In a small bowl, combine theremaining salt, paprika, garlicpowder, remaining black pepper,
and cayenne. Stir to mix, thengenerously sprinkle the spicesover all surfaces of the pork. Coverthe pork and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Remove the pork from therefrigerator and let come to roomtemperature while the grill heats.
Prepare a charcoal or gas
barbecue or smoker for indirectcooking, placing a water-filleddrip pan under the cool sideof the grill rack. Preheat to 250F. Make sure the grill rack isclean and oil it thoroughly withcooking spray.
Place the soaked wood chipson a piece of heavy-duty foil,then fold it over like an envelopeto enclose the wood. Using apencil, poke 3 or 4 holes in thetop of the foil envelope (don’t
poke all the way through).Place the foil packet directly
on the coals or gas flames. Whenthe wood inside the packet startsto smoke, transfer the pork buttto the prepared grill rack overindirect heat.
Lower the lid rack and cook until the internal temperaturereaches 190 F to 200 F, about 5 to6 hours. During the final 2 hoursof cooking, baste the pork withsome of the reserved sauce every 30 minutes.
Remove the pork from the grilland use 2 large forks to shredand pull apart the meat. Transferthe meat to a large bowl, thenstir in 3 to 4 tablespoons of thesauce (or up to 1/2 cup). Serve onhamburger buns with cole slaw on top or on the side.

Watermelon lemonade(Recipe from Rozanne Gold in
‘‘The Oprah Magazine Cookbook,’’ Hyperion, 2008)
Start to nish: 2 hours (15 minutes active)
Servings: 4
• 1 1/2 pounds sliced seedlesswatermelon, rind removed• Zest o 1 lemon•
3/4 cup reshly squeezed lemon juice• 1/2 cup honey• 1 1/2 cups cold water• 1 lemon, thinly sliced, or garnish
In a food processor, puree the watermelon until very smooth.
Set a mesh strainer over a bowl andpour the pureed watermelon throughit. Stir the pulp to let as much liquidas possible drain into the bowl.Discard the pulp.
Pour the watermelon juice into alarge pitcher and add the lemon zest.
Set aside.In a small bowl, whisk together the
lemon juice and honey until honey dissolves. Stir this mixture into the watermelon juice, then stir in the water.
Cover and refrigerate until very cold. Serve over ice and garnish withlemon slices.

Old-fashioned lemonade

For the sugar syrup:
• Grated zest o 2 lemons• 2 cups sugar
• 2 cups water
For the lemonade:
• 2 cups reshly squeezed lemon juice (about 12 lemons), with hal o the rinds reserved and roughlychopped
• 3 cups cold water
To make the sugar syrup, in amedium saucepan combine thezest, sugar and water. Bring to aboil over medium heat, stirring todissolve the sugar. Remove from
heat, cover and let steep for 15minutes.
Transfer the syrup to a 2-quartpitcher. Let cool.
Add the lemon juice, choppedlemon rinds and cold water. Stir wellto combine. Chill until very cold.Serve over ice.

Backpack Hikes in and
around Kittitas County:
Hyas Lake: A great backpack for youngsters and theirparents. Only two miles tothe scenic lake with very littleelevation gain. Lots of greatcampsites near the lake.
Bean Creek trail: Usually accessible in June. A beautifulhike to Bean Creek basin chock
full of wildflowers, with many opportunities to explore yonderpeaks and ridges.
Ingalls Lake: You can’tactually camp at the lake butthere are some great campsitesin a little basin before you reachthe lake. You can visit the pictur-
esque lake the next day without your heavy pack.
Peggy’s Pond: A popular hiketo access a climb of Mt Daniels. A five-mile hike going up upup, but worth the climb. Goodcampsites at Peggy’s pond andbeyond. (Katie’s favorite)
Manastash Lake: A lake setin a bowl below basalt cliffs.Usually accessible in Late May or early June. Great early seasonhike. Take your fishing rod.
Taneum Lake: Good beginner’sbackpack. Only two miles to thelake with very little elevation gain.
Pacific Crest Trail fromSnoqualmie to Hyas Lake: Oneof the most spectacular sectionsof the crest trail. Spot a vehicle atthe takeout. A wonderful four- to
five-day hike.Pacific Crest Trail from
Stevens Pass north: Anothergreat stretch of the crest. Once you reach the crest you stay highfor 13 or so miles with staggering views. When I hiked it wecame out the Little Wenatcheedrainage. You can do it easily in four days. It required twovehicles.
Thorp Mountain: I recom-mend camping at Thorp Lake
and hike to the lookout the nextday without a heavy pack. Take your fishing rod.
Marmot Lake: A difficulthike — 17 miles round trip. You just never seem to get there.But when you do it is worth theeffort. A side trip to Jade Lake or

Clarice is possible. Good huckle-berries in late summer into fall.
Robin and Tuck Lakes: Thelast portion is strenuous, andsteep. If you can go the extramile, the best campsites are atRobin Lakes. Great views makeit worth the effort. Many ridgesand lakes to explore. The upperlakes are breathtaking.
Obviously there are a greatmany more backpack trips toconsider. Consult maps, guide-books and other hikers for moreinformation. One of the bestsources is the Internet. Type in
the destination of the hike youare looking for in your favoritesearch engine and you will find way more stuff than you need.
If you are looking for your ownreasons, take a backpack tripbefore summer and fall havemelted into winter. In fact takelots of hikes. Happy trails.

If you’re looking for a new gas grill for yourcookout, you don’t have to buy the mostexpensive model to get good performance,according to the June issue of ConsumerReports.
“Most of the grills we tested did a nice jobcooking steaks, chicken and fish,” Celia Kuper-szmid Lehrman, Consumer Reports deputy
home editor, said in a telephone interview.“It’s nice that we are still finding inexpensivemodels that are doing a good job. The $200Brinkmann has a side burner and lots of shelf space. What we are seeing is you don’t have to
spend a lot of money to get a great grill.” And you don’t have to go to a specialty store

So what makes a great grill?“You want to have a grill that’s
going to cook the food evenly,”Lehrman said. “You have to be ableto control the flames and have morethan one burner to turn on and off.”
Two of the options promoted inadvertising — high BTUs (BritishThermal Units) and infrared cooking — won’t give better performance,
according to Lehrman.“For years everyone was saying ‘I have more BTUs than you,’” shesaid. “More BTUs didn’t translateinto better cooking or faster heating.The new buzz is infrared cooking,another way of saying indirect
cooking with heat. We didn’t see oneoutperforming the other or outper-forming conventional grilling. Thisis not something you have to spendextra for.”
Good performance is not just the
amount of heat a grill can generate,she said, it’s how much heat the grillcan keep in.
“Look at the grates,” she said.“Coated cast iron or stainless steeltend to sear better and maintainconsistent grilling. They are betterthan porcelain-coated steel.”
And how about those side burnersthat we love in South Florida to help with cooking during hurricane poweroutages?
Although side burners are conve-nient because you can prepare side
dishes at the same time or kee warm outside, Lehrman said ystove will do a better job of keefood at a low simmer. Side buralso take longer to boil water.
Lehrman also suggested look
for a grill with an electronic igConsumer Reports does notperform durability tests, but shthey do a salt spray test on difftypes of stainless.
“If you are looking at a 300 svs. a 400 series, the lower numbetter,” she said. “It is less likelrust. But the most inexpensivemake sure it stays in good conis to cover it.”
