“All gave Some… Some gave All”
WELCOME to the “AUGUST 2020”
Four Seasons Veterans’ Club Flyer
Through the continued support of our friends and neighbors in the Four Seasons community, our Veterans’ Club members extend our thanks to those who value the contribution of Vets who have defended our Nation. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our meeting on August 10th is cancelled. We hope to see you at our September meeting. Papercopy FLYERS will be hand distributed to all Veteran Club members. If you don’t receive a copy or know a Vet who hasn’t, let us know.
Notes from our Editorial Staff: Our Vet’s Club officers
determined that the scheduled August meeting should be
canceled. In consultation with our Board of Trustees and
with new outbreaks of the COVID-19 virus, the decision was
deemed necessary to keep our veterans safe and healthy. We
are also working hard to help veterans in need, keep them
informed, and render assistance on an as-needed basis. We
are always looking to make this Vet flyer better and more readable.

War – America’s First Christmas.
November Veterans’ Luncheon: Lou Cannizzaro announced the rescheduling of our
annual Luncheon to November 11th

July 4th
Motorcade – a Success: The Veterans’
Club Motorcade to celebrate Independence Day was a
fabulous success. Thanks to all who were part of the
planning and to those many Four Seasons residents,
family, and friends who came out to wave to our
Vets, shout “Happy Fourth,” dress up in patriotic
clothing, hold up signs, and show your support to
America. We are also appreciative of the Galloway
Township Police Department that provided two patrol
cars to ensure our Motorcade safely transitioned
through all the major intersections. Rich Hunt is to
be commended for being in charge of the Motorcade
and to John Coyle for his liaison work with the
GTPD and his steady, sage advice. Perhaps we
should do this again in the future.

Shoebox Coordinator: Even with everyone in the USA under strict pandemic
quarantine and guidelines, our military people are still in great danger fighting to
uphold our freedom and our American way of life. While most of Four Seasons
activities are closed, your Veterans’ Club has not forgotten these brave men and
women and we continue to forward to them several boxes of comfort each month.
If you would like to donate anything, please feel free to contact Nancy Schweiker
at 609-241-8289 or [email protected] and she will come to your home and
pick-up whatever you want to donate. Suggested donations this month are: baby

needed items to troops overseas and in combat zones. Please take a few minutes
out of your schedule, pass by to see us, and donate items for our troops.
Curbside Flag Requests: We continue to receive a
good flow of flag installations and replacement requests.
Some of our residents have gotten together with their

The U.S. Navy Bluejackets’ Manual: During WWII, in early 1944, my
Uncle “Junior” joined the U.S. Navy. His brother, my other uncle, joined the
U.S. Army Air Corps at the same time. Junior was named after my granddaddy
Boyd E. Smith (married to “Bigmama” Blankenship from Ireland). Junior was
a man of serious integrity, reliable, family-focused, and someone you could
trust to help no matter what. Being my mother’s brother, I received Uncle
Junior’s 1944 edition of the Bluejacket’s Manual, something I will forever
treasure and keep in the family. The manual is an essential handbook for U.S.
Navy personnel and has become the “bible” for sailors, providing information
about a wide range of naval topics. Junior always loved the Navy and he
credited his success in life to what he learned from ‘sailing the great oceans.’
Story submitted by Doug Satterfield, U.S. Army (retired).

Gung Ho! Movie Poster (1943)
WAR MOVIE REVIEW: Sit back, buckle
your seatbelt, get ready to ride along on a
journey through the past, and visit an old war
movie. My hobby, classic war films - you
know the ones, before color cinematography
and special effects. One of my personal favs is
Gung-Ho!: The Story of Carlson’s Makin
Island Raiders (1943) starring Robert
Mitchum, Randolph Scott, and many famous
actors. Famed NY Times film critic Bosley
Crowther wrote that “Gung Ho! Is for folks
with strong stomachs and taste for the
submachine gun.” The film possesses all the
elements of suspense, of sudden and
concentrated action, and heroic
accomplishment against all the odds. It tells the
story of the 2nd
Marine Raider Battalion that
invades the island using rubber boats. The
landing is met by fire from Japanese snipers
hiding in palm trees. The Marines dispose of
them, attack the Japanese headquarters, wipe
out the garrison, destroy installations with explosives, and then board submarines
for their return home. This 1942
early-war raid on the Japanese-
held island of Makin was a tactical
failure and produced little
intelligence but boosted spirits of
our troops and the people back
home got a temporary lift in
morale. I love this film. It has
every cliché in the book. Brawling
rivals, treacherous Japanese
soldiers, Marines throwing knives
with deadly accuracy, explosions galore filling the air with flying debris,
bayonets, judo, and manically giggling Japanese pilots while they attack the
Marines. The film is a MUST WATCH. You can view the full-length movie,
free of charge, on YouTube (at this link, 1 hr 26 min). This review by
Anonymous Navy Veteran, amateur film critic, and patriotic American.

U.S. Coast Guard Ensign
Photo from Front Page: The MH-65D Dolphin is a twin-engine search
and rescue (SAR) helicopter in service with the U.S. Coast Guard. It’s
primarily used as a short-range recovery (SRR) aircraft. It is a version of the
French-built Eurocopter SA366 Dauphin but assembled in Texas. You will
see these helicopters daily flying over Galloway Township. Ten of the MH-
65s are located at the FAA Tech Center near the Atlantic City Airport.
U.S. Coast Guard Birthday: 4 August 1790: The U.S. Coast Guard is the coastal defense, search
& rescue, and maritime law enforcement branch of
the armed forces. The USCG is unique among
military branches for having a maritime law
enforcement mission as part of its duties. It operates
under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
during peacetime and can be transferred to the Navy
during times of war. Created by Congress at the request of Alexander Hamilton
as the Revenue-Marine, it is the oldest continuous seagoing service of the United
States.
Purple Heart Day: 7 August: This day is observed in the United States
and commemorates the establishment in 1782 of the Badge of
Military Merit, an award created by George Washington to honor
soldiers for their distinguished action in battle. The badge was not
used after the Revolutionary War but was restored in 1932 as an
honor for those who have been wounded or killed in battle. In 2006,
the Purple Heart Hall of Honor was opened in New Windsor, NY, and
is dedicated to collecting and preserving the stories of those who
earned the PHM. We are honored by those who were awarded this
prestigious medal.
Navajo Code Talkers Day: 14 August: National Navajo Code Talkers
Day is a holiday honoring the contributions of Native Americans who
contributed to the U.S. war effort in WWII as well as recognizing the
participation of First Nations tribe members in U.S. military efforts from
many conflicts. Known as the “unbreakable code,” the Japanese were never
able to break it.

The United States Armed Forces’ Seals:
A bit of military humor: Today’s
cartoon is about military aerial refueling.
Things have come a long way over the years.
The world’s first refueling was not
accomplished by the U.S. Army Air Corps but
by Wesley May, Frank Hawks, and Earl
Daugherty, who manually transferred gasoline
from one plane to another in 1921. How?
Begin by strapping a 5-gallon gas can onto
your back…. Today, the U.S. Air Force has a
much safer method using the KC-10
Stratotanker and a flying boom. Now known
as air refueling or tanking, the process does
require precision flying but is much less
dangerous than the days of Barnstormers.
