WISe took a little break, and with it, Shawna sat down to consider

It’s March! You know what that means? Spring is around the corner. I suppose it’s not as exciting for us here in San Diego as it probably is for people who live in, say, Spokane, Washington, because we haven’t exactly been snowed in for the last six months. However, there is something about spring that is just so happy and cheery, isn’t there? Of course, there are the usual spring-y things that we all love – the flowers bloom, the Easter Egg Hunt comes to our neighborhood, the grass looks greener, the cold, crisp mornings give way to bright, sunny afternoons here in The Hills. Spring break is always something to look forward to, and for those of us who have children at the elementary and middle schools, spring means that the school year is almost at its end. There are more people on their bikes, more people out on jogs, the sun sets a little later, so there are more adults out grilling in their backyards later in the evenings, and more children actually still playing outside while their parents’ car pulls in to the driveway after work.

Yes, spring is something to look forward to. And I do. However, there is one aspect of spring that makes me cringe. It’s gardening time.

Gardening. The very word makes me shrivel up like a dried prune. You know how they say that people are born with green thumbs? Well, I was born with two black thumbs and eight dark grey fingers. I do not like to garden. It gives me no pleasure. I want to be a good gardener; every year I set a goal and try to work on it, and yet, I just can’t seem to make anything grow.

Our backyard is always a work in progress. I wanted to be water conscious last year so I decided I was going to plant all succulents in the back yard. My intentions were good; but alas, my black thumb took over and my little aloe plants are still little aloe plants. My cacti even seem to be wilting away. Every time the man at Home Depot tells me that a certain plant is “fool proof,” I want to tell him that I will kill it. I always do. I don’t know what it is about me, but I cannot seem to grow anything with leaves.

I am going to work on my garden. I really want to plant some vegetables and an herb garden. I’m so glad I will always have the Farmers’ Market as a back up, or else my family would starve. If you haven’t been to the San Marcos Farmers’ Market, I hope you will read our article about them and find your way over there on a Wednesday afternoon this month. For all you farmers and gardeners out there, I’m hoping that some of you have ideas for me – do you have a wonderful garden that you tend to each day? Do you have tips that will help me as I try, valiantly, this spring, to grow something that will remotely resemble a vegetable or fruit? Don’t tell me to plant mint – I know that most people cannot kill it, but I do!

While some of you are gardening this spring, oth-ers of you will spring clean. See, I like doing that! We did ours last month, and it was so liberating. If you are spring cleaning this year, we have some tips and sugges-tions for you, including a list of non-profit organizations that will take your bags of stuff and place them in good homes, with families that need them. Spring cleaning always seems like such a chore, but it really does feel good to de-junk and cleanse, and give at the same time, doesn’t it?

So, as I say, spring will be here soon. Will you put on gardening gloves, Crocs, a wide-brimmed hat and go out to putter in your garden? If you’re like me, maybe you will forego the gardening and get on your bike and take a long, leisurely ride to grab a cup of yogurt at Utopia. Will you clean and organize and host a garage sale (we have tips for you)? Maybe you will put on your yoga pants and walk briskly to the new yoga studio for a class. This would be a great time to join the incredibly knowledgable folk who guide the trail walks in San Elijo on Saturday mornings. It seems like a glorious spring day is a good one to spend painting a cheery pot or cof-fee cup at A Colorful Universe with the children. The leaves will be green again, the flowers will be blooming soon, the Hills will be alive with the Sound of Music? Well, perhaps not the Sound of Music, but the sounds of laughing children, happy grown-ups, and all the plea-sures that come to San Elijo Hills in the spring.

The idea was for women to inspire and empower each other and support one another as they worked from home. Shawna found some of her closest friends at these meetings, and felt complete in mind, body, spirit and work.

If you’re currently working, thinking about working, if your work is that of being a mother and wife, if you are new to our neighborhood and want an open forum, WISE is where you want to be. WISE meetings will take place once a month at the Hometown Realty office here in the Town Square. Meetings will be the second Wednesday of every month from 6:30-9pm. WISE gatherings will include a special speaker, wine and cheese. Space will be provided for display of business cards and community announcements.

The groundbreaking for Pacific Preschool and Kindergarten of San Elijo Hills, a 6,975-square-foot facility with a 10,000-square-foot outdoor playground, will take place at 10am on March 8, at the school site on Elfin Forest Road, across the street from San Elijo Middle School. The preschool and kindergarten is being developed by DWO Enterprises of Rancho Santa Fe and will feature eight individual classrooms surrounding a large multi-purpose room, a kitchen and ancillary facilities. It is scheduled to open in the fall, serving children from 18 months through kindergarten.

San Elijo Hills is the third location for Pacific Preschool, a privately owned Early Education Program. Other locations in South Orange County are accredited by the National Academy for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a distinction earned by only eight percent of pre-schools nationwide.

According to Paul Borden, president of HomeFed Corporation, which oversees the development of San Elijo Hills, “We knew that there was great demand for a high-quality preschool in San Elijo Hills. When we visited Pacific Preschool in Ladera Ranch, we were impressed with the facility, the staff and the entire educational environment. We knew we had found the perfect match for our community.”

Fence Painting - FaQ

Over the next six months, the Association will be completing this extensive project around the commu-nity. This can sometimes seem like an intrusive, annoying prospect. Please realize that the HOA understands your concerns and will attempt to be as unobtrusive as possible.

FAQ:

Why are you painting MY Fence?The perimeter fencing in the community is maintained by the HOA. These include common area fencing and resident fencing that backs up to open or common area. The goal is to extend the life and appearance of the fencing by periodi-cally painting, sealing and repairing the fencing.

Didn’t you just do this?The last fencing painting project was completed in 2005 and only impacted a portion of the community. The HOA Board has worked with our paint vendors to extend the warranty with the hope that the next fence painting project will move to an 8 to 10 year cycle - ultimately saving a tremendous amount of money for the association.

Can I OPT OUT of this process and just maintain my own fence?Unfortunately, this is not an option. The fencing is maintained by the HOA to help preserve the integrity and beauty of our community.

Can’t you paint around all the vines and plant life I have growing over my fencing. I like the privacy they provide. Unfortunately, the paint vendors need complete access to the fence. This is a requirement to meet the warranty specifications. They require a 6 inch clearance on both sides of the fence as well as underneath the bottom rail.

What about my Rabbit Fencing?Anything attached to the fence needs to be removed during this process. After the painters finish, we would encourage you to find a solution to reapply it that doesn’t require it to be attached to the fence. This will avoid having to remove it when the next fence painting project cycles.

Will you notify me when you’re going to paint? You will receive a flyer taped to your door or gate 7 days before- then again 3-5 days before the painters are due to reach your fence.

I’ve been meaning to tell you about a random act of kindness that took my husband by surprise a little while ago. It has been on my mind for a while now, and I’ve been meaning to share it with you. Perhaps we could start a chain in our neighborhood of random acts of kindness? Do you think it would work? I really do.

It all started with coffee. My husband’s day always starts with coffee. No matter how many in-home coffee pots we try, he still likes to stop by Starbucks each morning for his morning elixir of life. One morning, he called me, very surprised, because the person in the line in front of him paid for his coffee. This had never happened before, and I think it started his day off on just the right note. When he came home that night and told us all his story, he said he was going to do the same for the person behind him in line the next time he stopped at Starbucks.

This got me wondering if the recipient of my husband’s act of kindness did the same for another? The chain would have been passed on, and who knows how far it could go. Tim Minjares, publisher of The Fountain, told me how incredibly grateful he felt one day when a friend dropped off dinner to his family on a particularly crazy deadline night. It happened a few months ago, and the thought of it still makes him smile.

So here’s an idea – let’s do this as a community. Why don’t we start a random act of kindness in our neighborhoods and see if we can pass on the chain. It doesn’t have to be a huge gesture – what about a thoughtful letter to your neighbor or friend, thanking them for the difference they make in your life each day? (I was inspired by a friend who wrote 40 letters of thanks one a day over 40 days to 40 people who had made a difference in his life.) Maybe drop off a handful of flowers to a friend? Cook dinner or bake cookies for a family and drop them off one evening? Buy some strawberries and dip them in chocolate for a close friend. It doesn’t matter how big or how small the gesture is, it is sure to bring a smile to someone’s face.

If you are the recipient of this gesture, do something sweet for another person. I truly believe that we can keep this cycle going in our neighbor-hood. It could be our spring promise to each other – and the karmic cycle of kindness will come back to you, with good thoughts and blessings along the way.

P.S. – If you are the recipient of one such wonderful act, please write and tell me about it. Maybe we can, as a community, keep track of how many lives we have touched each day, month, or year.

brooke lonsdale Thanks the San elijo Community for Their Help and

Support

Some of you may know Brooke Lonsdale as “the crossing guard lady.” Others of you may know her as “Ms. Brooke, kindergarten supervisor.” What most of you may not know is that 10 years ago, Brooke was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and was treated with chemotherapy. Last September, Brooke was in a car accident, and in the after-math of the accident, the doctors found a tumor in her thyroid. This form of thyroid cancer is slow growing, and at 4mm., has been growing for approximately 10 years.

Brooke had surgery over Christmas break where they removed her thy-roid, lymph nodes and tumor, and this month she starts radiation. Brooke contacted The Fountain and asked if she could thank all the wonderful San Elijo families who rallied around her and supported her when she came home from surgery. Brooke especially would like to thank Lisa Kaltenbach for setting up personal websites with Care Calendar and Caring Bridge, which spread like wildfire across the neighborhood. This allowed her family the luxury of homemade meals that were made by residents of our wonderful neighborhood and delivered to her every day for weeks as she healed from her procedure. Brooke was extremely touched that even during the holidays, families put aside their own needs and came together to help her in her time of need.

Five years ago, with her friend Kristin Aschbrenner, Heather Dorny started the San Elijo Chapter of Kids Korps. She was searching for a way to serve, and a way to teach her children the value of giving back. She wanted to go on missions to India and Africa to offer assis-tance, but realized that there are opportunities right here in San Diego to help someone live a better life. There is an amazing impact to be made with small means, and with little helping hands along the way, people’s lives can be changed, slowly, but surely.

The vision of Kids Korps is to “develop leaders for life through youth volunteerism.” The exposure to community service is invaluable to our chil-dren – they see that they are blessed with more than they need, they learn that it’s easy to make a difference in someone’s life, and that there are needs in our communities that we can meet through volunteering.

Heather and Kay Lani Rapp now head the San Elijo Chapter of Kids Korps. Many of you have seen the children of San Elijo selling newspapers for Kids’ News Day. Perhaps you saw The Giving Tree at our elementary school last Christmas. These were only a few of the projects that our families took on. The children will continue to serve this year.

In March, they will serve at Bread of Life. In April, they will do a craft and visit with the children at The Children’s Convalescent Hospital. In May, they will host a water party at HeadStart.

Kids Korps has a website and anyone can sign up, regardless of whether you are a resident of San Elijo. There are hundreds of activities to choose from, and it’s never too late to register to serve.

The City of San Marcos Family Enrichment Program (FEP) will host two special events during the month of March. Families will join together to make “Grass Head Guys” on Wednesday, March 7 at 7pm. The event is $3 per person.

The Family Enrichment Program is hosting its annual St. Patrick’s Day Party on Wednesday, March 14 from 6:30-8:30pm. Pre-sale tickets are avail-able for purchase at the San Marcos Community Center for $3 per person or $5 at the door. Cost includes crafts, treats, BINGO and other carnival games. Additional game tickets will be available for purchase at a cost of five tickets for $1. Don’t forget to wear green!

All FEP activities cost $3 per person. FEP events are located at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Dr. The FEP brings families together through arts, crafts, cooking and special events. Hike to Discovery lake

The City of San Marcos Community Services will sponsor a Discover San Marcos Hike on Saturday, March 3, from Discovery Lake Park. The hike is free and will begin at 9am; hikers can start signing in at 8:30am.

This easy, 3-mile hike will circle Discovery Lake and follow the Discovery Creek and Cima Drive trails. A challenging, more difficult 6-mile hike to Double Peak Park and the ridge line trails will also be offered. Hikers will meet in the parking lot at Discovery Lake Park, 650 Foxhall Drive, San Marcos. The hike is subject to cancellation in the event of rain.

aYSO Matrix-San Elijo: bu9 at State cup!The Boys U9 Matrix-SE team

competed in the State Cup games recently; in their inaugural year, this is quite an undertaking. But this team was up for the challenge. They advanced out of pool-play on the first weekend. In the next round, after scoring the equalizer in the last seconds of regulation play, they lost on a last second goal in the second overtime. The team had their heads held high as participating in the State Cup was ‘icing on the cake’ of an already successful season!

Have you ever been in something you thought you would never be in? I will never forget the time my team and I went to the State Cup Tournament. On our first game we played against InterAmerica team and we did not play so well. The next day we played against Avengers Soccer and we played much better. We still had a chance to advance but we had to win the last game. On the next game we played against Canyon PSA and I scored a goal! My friends Ty Boysen and Nicholas Rich also scored a goal. The final score was 3-0 and I felt so happy that day. After that, we went to a party at Hendos and had lots of fun. My coach, Stephen Ure, tal-lied up our points and we made it to the next round. I was so proud I was on San Elijo BU9 Matrix team.

Matrix bu9 in 2nd Round at the State cup! (Ty boysen #12)

What a game for the San Elijo Matrix BU9 soccer team in the second round of the State Cup! Every player put forth their very best effort and as quoted by one player, “We played so hard it felt like our legs were going to fall off!” Even when down 3-1, the boys played their hearts out the entire game, making it one of the most exciting matches of the season! They scored again in the last few seconds just before the whistle blew, putting the score at 4-4 and into overtime! They continued to work as a team and not one player gave up! Even though they lost 5-4, they will end the season with their heads held high, proud to be a part of a special team led by a passionate and committed coach, Stephen Ure! They are all looking forward to next season, and we are confident this won’t be the last our community will hear of this awesome group of third graders!

State cup – a Great Experience! (Jimmy ure #8)

I was so happy that my team went to the state cup. We beat Canyon PSA 3-0 and moved on to the next round in Apple Valley. In Apple Valley we lost the game 5-4 in overtime but everybody played their best. We all felt sad after we lost, but we know we can win it the next time. My dad is the coach and he told me that he is so proud of all the boys and the way we played. I love being on the Matrix team.

On January 28, the children of the San Elijo FLAP Mandarin Chinese program performed at the Meadowbrook Middle School in Poway. The FLAP program is the foreign language program available to children at the elementary, middle and high school. Students in Chinese 1 and Chinese 2 took to the stage to sing songs and perform speeches. Dressed in red, and with two Chinese dragons as accompaniments, these students amazed par-ents and visitors with their command of the language.

After the performance, they used their fake money and coins to purchase delicious food and treats at the bazaar. They were able to practice speaking Mandarin to the vendors, and traded money for Dimsum, smoothies, noodles and sweet buns.

We all know how important recycling is. We also lead busy lives and without easy recycling options you may be tempted to dispose of batteries, prescription meds, etc. in the trash. Yikes! I think we can do better as a community and it all starts at home.

Contest officials for RecycleMania, an intercollegiate recy-cling competition, declared California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) the 2011 Grand Champion, marking the university’s seventh consecutive title victory. It is inspiring to know that our local San Marcos university, CSUSM, is known for being the nation’s best college campus for recycling.

San Elijo Hills can be the leading city in recycling too. A competition is coming up by the California Environmental Protection Agency to see which city is the best at recycling. Go to CoolCalifornia.org/community for information.

This month we are going to talk about something as simple as baggies. Yes, I know you all try very hard to bring your own bags to the store. We also need to think about the small baggies. You pack them in lunches, your newspaper is delivered in one, your fruits and veggies might travel home from the market in them, bread often comes in a similar bag. These can all be recycled right back at the grocery store in the same bin where you recycle your grocery bags. However, did you know, they do not get recycled by hav-

ing them picked up curbside in your recycle bin? An easy trick for storing all those little miscellaneous baggies

and food wrap for recycling is reuse the box your baggies came in. Stuff them in your small box as they accumulate, rather than your standard trash or recycle. These bags do not get recycled in the stan-dard home recycling pick up. Keep your little baggie recycle box right in the drawer where you reach for baggies. Let’s make it easy to do the right thing.

Another great option to consider is the biodegradable sandwich bags available at Sprouts. Try not to use vegetable and fruit bags at the mar-ket if you can do without. Biodegradable bags are available for picking up after your pets, as well. They work great and are available at Target.

I have heard it said, I may have even said it myself at one time, “I’ll just put this in the recycling, if it’s not recyclable, well it should be.” The truth is that unless you recycle the right stuff in the right place, it really just ends up in the landfill or the ocean.

I am certainly no expert on recycling, but I hope to research and keep us all informed about little and big ways we can have a positive impact on our environment. If you have ideas and knowledge or questions to contribute, I would love to hear from you. Thank you for helping the Hills turn Green.

revered for recycling – CSuSm wins again!

Contest officials for RecycleMania, an intercollegiate recycling com-petition, declared California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) the 2011 Grand Champion, marking the university’s seventh consecutive title victory. This year, CSUSM set an all-time record for the 10-week competi-tion by achieving a 79.69 percent recycling rate.

Created in 2001 by two rival universities, RecycleMania has grown into a nationwide competition that challenges more than 630 universities and colleges to reduce overall waste and increase recycling over a 10-week period. Cal State San Marcos has claimed the title of Grand Champion since first entering the competition in 2005. To earn the prestigious title, RecycleMania officials evaluate a university’s performance in two catego-ries, the Per Capita Classic and Waste Minimization, to determine which campus demonstrates the greatest achievement in both source reduction and recycling. As a result of the 10-week competition, which began January 23 and ended April 2, CSUSM recycled 40 pounds of material per person on campus, and diverted 50 pounds of waste per person.

San Diego Alumnae Panhellenic offers Scholarships to Women

San Diego Alumnae Panhellenic, an organization composed of alumnae from National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities, is pleased to announce that it is offering merit scholarships. Applicants need to be graduating San Diego County high school women who in the 2012-2013 school year will be attending a four-year college or university that has NPC sororities on its campus or women who are presently in an NPC sorority attending a San Diego County college.

The women of SDAP have been active supporters of young women all over San Diego County and specifically in San Marcos through the high school and collegiate scholarship pro-grams. In 2007, SDAP awarded a High School Merit Scholarship to Jenny Kwan, a graduate of San Marcos High School who attended Stanford University to study biomedical engineering. SDAP was impressed by Jenny’s excellent academic background with a focus on advanced study in physics, her interest in tennis and dance, and her commitment to the San Marcos community. In 2011, SDAP expanded its scholarship program to include collegiate awards. SDAP was proud to present a collegiate award to Whitney Sillers, a student at CSU-San Marcos. Whitney is an active member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and has served her chapter as Recruitment Secretary. She balances sorority life, academ-ics, volunteering at Palomar Hospital and a part-time job. San Diego Alumnae Panhellenic would love to continue supporting the young women of San Diego.

Kid city Sports

The San Elijo Hills Spring 2012 Beginner T-Ball League through Kid City Sports begins March 10 on Hilltop Field on Schoolhouse Way. Game Days are Saturdays from 12-4pm. There are no practices, but there will be an introductory clinic.

There are two age divisions available: 4 year-old division – Must be 4 years by June 30, 2012 5-6 year-old division – Must be 6 years old by league start date.In addition, the Spring 2012 sports classes for kids aged 24 months to

CHrIS orlAnDo: CITy CounCIl February was an important month for the City of San Marcos. The City took two important steps toward establish-ing a bright future for our City: receiving the final environmental approvals to move forward with the Creek District development and passing a modern-

ized General Plan to guide the City’s future development.

creek district Receives Permits

San Marcos has received environmental permits necessary to move forward with the highly anticipated San Marcos Creek District, a compre-hensive 214-acre “downtown” specific plan between San Marcos Boulevard and San Marcos Creek.

The district will include mixed-use development, a 73-acre habitat pre-serve, environmental enhancements and infrastructure improvements like roadway, bridges and flood control. Its valuation at build out is estimated at $1.25 to $1.5 billion.

The San Marcos Creek District plan was adopted in 2007 following extensive analysis of environmental conditions and input from city decision-makers, landowners, neighbors, and the community-at-large. The plan pro-vides a comprehensive vision for the District including goals, policies and development standards to guide future public and private actions relating to the area’s development and conservation of open space and natural resources. Full build out of the San Marcos Creek District is expected to take about 15 to 20 years. The project has been in the works in various forms for more than 28 years.

Future of San Marcos Takes ShapeThe Creek District has received permits from resource and environ-

mental protection agencies necessary to move forward, including: The United States Army Corps of Engineers (Clean Water Act Section 404 Individual Permit); California Department of Fish and Game (Fish and Game Code Section 1602 Streambed Alteration Agreement); and the California Regional Water Quality Control Board (Clean Water Act Section 401 Certification).

The clearing of vegetation has already begun in order to prepare a por-tion of the site for upcoming Phase 1 public infrastructure improvements between Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz. Construction of those improve-ments should get under way by late summer or early fall and will include the first portion of habitat restoration/expansion, installation of a flood wall and linear park along Discovery Street, widening of Discovery Street, construc-tion of Creekside Drive, and construction of the Creekside Promenade.

comprehensive General Plan Passed

After two years of planning, more than 30 public workshops, three Planning Commission meetings and three City Council meetings, the City Council has approved a comprehensive update to its General Plan. The Plan guides future development in the City of San Marcos and sets a vision for what our City will become in years to come.

The General Plan update process modernized the nearly 30-year-old plan. It incorporates the latest and most innovative approaches to plan-ning, including complete streets, formed based-zoning, and an entirely new approach called transitional zoning. For the first time, the Plan also com-prehensively addresses environmental, mobility, sustainability, air quality, and water quality concerns.

The Gill family has lived in San Elijo since August of last year, and they feel like they are already setting down into our wonderful community. It wasn’t an easy year for them – their twin girls were born last March, and in August, they moved their girls, their little boy, and themselves across the

country to a new home.Last June, the Gills came to San

Diego to look for homes. John’s new company is in La Jolla, and he had been offered a new, exciting position here. They came to look for a neighborhood that had a great school, child-friendly atmosphere and safe, pretty surround-ings. So they started looking in 4S

Ranch. When their realtor brought them to San Elijo Hills on a whim, they fell in love and bought the first home they saw in Carmel.

John and Keller drove cross country with their dog and got here before Jenn and the twins. Keller, their little boy, made friends the same day with boys that live on his street. Keller is six years old and is a first grader at San Elijo Elementary. The east coast boy has become completely Californian – he gets upset when it’s too cold to wear shorts, he loves the ocean and the beach, and is thrilled to be so close to LEGOLAND. He enjoys taking karate classes at the martial arts studio in Bressi Ranch. A voracious LEGO builder, Keller spends many hours working with his LEGO bricks, and teaching his little sisters how to do the same.

Ellen and Brenna are twins, and will turn one this month. Jenn says that

The Gill Family – jennifer, ellen, brenna, keller and johnthey are the sweetest babies, happy all the time, even amidst the chaos of mov-ing, packing and unpacking. They seem to have complementary personalities. Ellen is more laid back and observant while Brenna is a little spitfire, who likes to rough and tumble and gets into everything. It is obvious that Jenn adores her children, and is so proud of the way they have found their places in their new home.

Jenn is a running coach and she says she has been running most of her life. Marathons and long distance running have been part of her life for ages, and so she started a new business called Sole Health and Wellness (www.solehealthandwellness.com). You may have seen her name in The Fountain, because her company runs a running club for beginners here in San Elijo. She says that she has worked the “regular, office job,” but really loves being around people and helping them be more active and achieve their fitness goals. When she’s not mom, and not running, Jenn loves to read and cook and says that the local produce here in San Diego is inspiring her to cook more.

Her husband, John, is no doubt enjoying the benefits of her inspiration. John and Jenn married 10 years ago, and met while working together at a lab in Maryland. Jenn says that John is “a true scientist” and loves his job at Synthetic Genomics, where he is working on developing alternate forms of fuel. When he’s not at work, John enjoys bicycling, running and competing in triathlons.

It seems like the Gill family is thrilled with their move. They have put the 2011 whirlwind year behind them, and this year are working on planting roots in San Elijo and making it home. So far, they seem to have done an excellent job, and we hope they know that all of us in San Elijo are so glad they found their way here.

The San Marcos Fire Department generously donated their time to cook and serve our community a hot delicious breakfast. The kids had a blast making a craft, creating unique art on the chalk walk, listening to music and getting their faces painted. We couldn’t put on these events with-out our volunteers, so we would like to thank all the volunteers who helped put this event together. In the 13th century, medieval knights involved in the Crusades were trained to stay on active duty in rain or shine. Like those brave knights, bipolar weather has got nothing on us! The month of February brought the first rain on the new campus, and no one really knew what to expect. People in my classes were all concerned about a possible flood because none of us could remember seeing drains anywhere. However, when droplets fell from the sky, we were all very pleasantly surprised. There were no unavoidable puddles or surprisingly slippery spots on the pavement, like our old school. Also, our plethora of metal overhangs came to the rescue once again and the entire school, it seemed, was able to huddle under them with plenty of elbow room. And to top it all off, our wonder-ful administration provided us with free Knights’ umbrellas to use for the day! I, personally, am quite impressed. On sunny days, ASB plays music at lunchtime. Good moods are immediately created, especially one day when they played the Temptations’ “My Girl” and literally the whole school was singing along. It truly echoed across campus.

With the weather obstacle avoided, students continue to focus on their studies harder than ever. Seniors are beginning to hear from colleges and juniors are taking the SAT and the ACT for the first time. Just to prove to all of our parents how well we are doing (or how crazy our teachers are), SMHS

hosted Day with a Knight. Basically, Day with a Knight allows parents to follow their sons and daughters around during a normal school day. It was hilarious to see how different the teachers sometimes act. The mean ones always act nice and the nice ones always act nicer. It was quite a success and everyone’s parents got to see what life is like on the interim. They got to walk our walk and can now talk our talk.

Our school continues to plan activities to make our school life out of this world. SM decided to help promote the opening of the new Flippin’ Pizza on Twin Oaks Valley Road and, in return, we all got a free slice after school! The dance team performed a flash mob at the restaurant and, at lunchtime, a few students got to participate in a pizza “pie” eating contest that we all got to watch. It was hilarious and a fun way to spend lunch.

February is now gone with the wind and April has been thrown into our laps with full force. With April, come more acceptances, more denials, more sports and more homework piles. The end of the year is coming closer and closer.

Sadly, we wave goodbye to this campus at the end of April because of a severe rat problem. Well, it was fun while it lasted . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . April Fools!

High School Updates

Get Caught Reading is a program that got started after winter break at SEMS. If a member of the school staff sees you reading outside of class, you may get a ticket that is put inside a box for a chance of winning a cool prize. Prizes can be things like yogurt coupons and they are awarded to a few lucky winners who are selected by the SEMS TV crew each week.

To be able to get a lot of tickets (and hope-fully a lot of prizes) you need to be reading a good book. That’s why I suggest reading The Hunger Games series. I know many people have already read all three books (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay), but with the first movie in the series coming out on March 23, it wouldn’t be too bad of

an idea to reread them. If you haven’t read the books and are interested in seeing the movie when it hits theaters, I suggest you read them. Not only are the books great, but they will help you better understand the movie.

The Hunger Games series can be found at any book-store, on the Nook or Kindle, and in our school library. If you want to get the books at the library, be sure to get on the waiting list ASAP because these books are very popular.

Even if you don’t like reading, give these books a try. They have so much action you won’t be able to put them down. Remember, if you get caught reading these, or any other books, you have a chance of winning cool prizes. So find a book and start reading today. “Let the games begin.”

We all want the “perfect body,” right? Each of us has set goals at one point or another to lose weight or gain muscle or fit into a certain

size jeans or look like a certain person or whatever.For the longest time, I sifted through fitness magazines and pulled out

images of people I wanted to look like. I used these images as motivators to help “keep me on track.” The problem was that these people had totally dif-ferent body types than me. I was never going to look like those people. But for some reason, I always set my goal based on images I believed were the ideal “perfect body” and not based on what my personal ultimate goal was.

I spent a lot of time trying to become that “perfect body” and it was a struggle. Trying to mold your body into some perfect image – well, it’s a battle. Maybe you relate.

One day I sat down and asked myself, where am I going with this? What is my ultimate goal? You see, I can work all day long on trying to have a “body builder” type of body, but my body is not designed that way. And, no matter what I try, that look will never be a sustainable look for me. So, what is my real goal when it comes to fitness? My real goal is to feel good and to not have to obsess about what I eat or don’t eat. My real goal is to be healthy and to know I’m taking care of myself.

What I found in my life is that when I let go of the images from the fitness maga-zines and focused instead on letting my body gravitate to its own natural state of health, I no longer needed to worry about eating high levels of protein or calories or working out all the time to maintain a certain body mass. I just matched up the proper nutrition for my body type and then my body maintained the healthy physique that was right for my body.

If you really sit down and think what you really want, it makes the journey so much easier and more direct. You will save yourself a lot of time and frustration. We are all different and unique people with our own unique physique. And, we each have a “perfect body” in us. The trick is finding it. The good news is, once you find it, it is actually very easy to maintain.

So look deep and identify what you really want. Is it to be more attrac-tive? If so why do you want to be more attractive? Is it to feel better? Is it to live longer? Is it to be healthy?

If you focus on letting your body naturally gravitate to what is best for it, I think you will be surprised and pleased with the results. You will feel better and you will finally be truly happy with what you see in the mirror.

2. how many does it take to put in a light bulb?

Outside a light-tight, well-insulated room, on a wall, there are three standard on/off switches. One (and only one) controls a light bulb inside the room. The other two switches do nothing. You can only open the room door once, and cannot touch/change any switches after the door is open (or closed again, for that matter). Damaging or disassembling the door, walls, or switches is against the rules. How do you determine which of the three switches controls the light bulb?

3. Shangri-la

Pet RescuesThe Fountain would like to kick off a new column that will focus on ani-

mals and shelters across San Diego. We would like you to share your stories of pet adoption with us – tell us how you found your beloved dog or cat, and which rescue center you recommend. With the number of animals that need homes rapidly rising here in San Diego County, we’d like to spotlight your rescued pets and the shelters from which they were saved.

Lab Rescuers, San DiegoIt all started one morning with a walk to Albertsons. We ran into a

family with their gorgeous, regal looking black Labrador, and of course, my children had to stop and pet him. “Look how good he is, Mama,” they said, “Can we get a dog, too?” Now, we’ve had this conversation many times, and we weren’t quite ready before. But we were starting to think about it more seriously, and so we asked the family where they found their dog. And they told us about Lab Rescuers.

Lab Rescuers works hard to rescue, relocate and rehabilitate Labs that have seen harder times. Their animals include dogs that have been sick, abused, neglected or abandoned, and the volunteers’ goal is to find them foster homes and adoptive homes as well.

We came home from Albertsons and started looking on their website, www.labrescuers.org, and of course, the children wanted to look at every single dog listed on the site. Then they wanted to fill out an application form, which we did. When they found out that Lab Rescuers hosts adoption events at Petcos and Petsmarts across North County, they begged us to take them to one. And so we did, muttering all along that, “We were just going to look.”

As I write this, our six-year-old black Lab sits at my feet, snoring softly, warming my toes. Wiley is a kind, sweet dog with the gentlest nature. Before he came to Lab Rescuers, he was underfed and more than likely abused. We thought our kids would want a puppy, but as they read the stories about the older dogs, they changed their mind and really wanted to adopt an older dog that needed a good home. Lab Rescuers allowed us to foster Wiley for a week so that we could make sure that he worked with the dynamic of our family. It only took one day before his dog tag was replaced and the new one read “Wiley Sinnott.” I won’t tell you that he hasn’t dug in the trash can for food, or that he doesn’t shed all over my floors. He has and he probably

will. But when my girls walk in the door, the dog wakes from the depths of slumber to slobber all over them and then lies quietly under the table at their feet as they eat their snack and do their homework.

Herky, a male, and Shilo, a

as a bonded pair. Their dad

is a Husky and their mother,

a white lab. They both have

the Husky eyes – one dark,

one blue. both dogs are super

sweet and gentle. They are

friendly with people and with other dogs, and ride nicely in

the car.

Herky and Shilo have been staying at Dogtopia for the past

three weeks. They love to play with the other dogs, and cuddle

with each other. They adore each other and have been togeth-

er all their lives. These two would like to find a home where
