Induction of Honorary Members:

Newly Inducted Honorary Rotarians

The Oswego Rotary Club recently elected five local leaders to honorary Rotary membership: Roxana Farden, Anthony Henderson, Roberta Palange, Steven Perkins, and Barbara Shineman. All of these individuals have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self. Our new members were introduced at today’s meeting, with several previously elected honorary members in attendance. Roxana (Rocky) Farden and Roberta (Bobbie) Palange have collaborated for a number of years to provide outstanding direction of excellent Harborfest Children’s Theater productions, such as The Three Musketeers in 2010 -- which involved 34 performers, ages 8 to 16. Their work gives our youth an invaluable complement to the music and theater performing arts programs of the Oswego schools. They have also worked on productions of Oswego Opera. Farden taught general and vocal music at Fitzhugh Park Elementary School for 30 years, retiring in 2004. Palange taught vocal music for 34 years, retiring from the Oswego Middle School in 2001. She directed many elementary and middle school musicals throughout her career.

An active member of the Oswego Rotary Club and a Board member as well until his retirement and relocation to the Rochester area, Anthony Henderson has continued to support our club by annually presenting a program to mark the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His fond recollections of having met Dr. King as a youth lend his program interest and authenticity. Henderson led the SUNY College at Oswego’s commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day for many years while he served as a residence hall director. Steven Perkins is an active member of the Watertown Rotary Club and third-generation Rotarian. He travels frequently to Oswego on business as a fourth-generation owner and Vice President for Sales of the Black River Paper Company. He frequently “makes up” at Oswego Rotary meetings, where he has generously presented several programs on his avocation as the reenactor of an officer of the French artillery and grenadiers during the French and Indian War -- always in full, authentic uniform. Barbara Shineman has displayed a lifetime commitment to public-spirited involvement. She is an educator who completed a distinguished career as a professor for the State University of New York at Oswego. She served with distinction as a long-time member of the SUNY Oswego College Foundation. Shineman is a generous supporter of the Oswego Rotary Club and The Rotary Foundation. Her commitment to Rotary has included attendance at district conferences and numerous local events. Her life’s work truly embodies the spirit of Service Above Self. Proposed New Member: Mark DuFore has proposed Anastasia Gagas for active membership in our club. Anastasia has been approved by the Board of Directors and participated in an information meeting. She was an attorney in the New York City financial district for twenty years before returning to Oswego, where she is currently engaged in the general practice of law. She has served on the Mayor’s Committee on College & Community Relations since returning to Oswego. Any objection to this proposal must be given in writing to President Dave Welsch by July 5, 2011. 2011 Calendar: No dates to report at this time Announcements: President Dave Granoff reported that the Paul Harris Gala Celebration Dinner last Tuesday evening was a rousing

success -- not to mention heartwarming and moving as well! Terry Gorman reported that once the Patz Restaurant becomes unavailable for our weekly luncheon meetings

(sometime this August, it appears), we will likely move to the American Foundry -- located behind the Fajita Grill, near C's Farm Market, on 246 W. Seneca Street (Route 104 West).

Joette Deane announced that our club has agreed to sponsor a young man, James, for the “On Point for College” program, meaning that we will help support his efforts to obtain a college education.

Contributions to The Rotary Foundation may now be made directly online. For more information, please proceed to http://www.rotary.org or call 1-847-866-3352.

If you will be participating in any Rotary Youth Exchange/Student activities, please remember that you must first obtain and submit a Rotarian Volunteer Application and Background Check Form. If you need this form, please contact President Dave Granoff or Sabine Ingerson.

Please keep in mind our club’s goal of 100% participation in annual donations to the Rotary Foundation and consider contributing to the Rotary Foundation if you haven’t yet done so. All contributions are welcome.

Members who have programs to sponsor for any of our luncheon meetings are asked to contact Sue Witmer, Dave Welsch, or Dave Granoff.

Today’s Program: Today’s activities focused primarily on our “Changing of the Guard” program as we move from the 2010-2011 Rotary Year to the 2011-2012 Rotary Year. We thanked Dave Granoff for his outstanding year as our president, and we enthusiastically welcomed Dave Welsch as our incoming president. The Rotary Officers and our Board of Directors were also inducted. Remarks from our outgoing president, Dave Granoff, and our incoming president, Dave Welsch, are found below. Dave Granoff’ s Remarks “It seems like yesterday that I was standing here and accepting the Gavel as your new Club President, and this year has passed by quickly, in the blink of an eye. I will keep my remarks as brief as possible, which, as you have all come to know about me, is sometimes a struggle. I can tell you, though, that I have enjoyed being your President very much. I am happy to report that we have all made it through another year with a Club that is healthy and stronger than most in continuing our 84-year legacy. We put forth a number of Club proposals and challenges at the beginning of last year, and I am pleased that they became reality. My top priorities at the beginning of last year were to emphasize fiscal responsibility to spend within our means, continue support of RI causes, enhance club organization, improve club awareness in the community, and find new membership opportunities. We made great marks in all of these and, through Dave Welsch’s new leadership, we will continue on a positive course to improve in these areas. Now, more than ever, we need to be mindful of the challenges and changes that society and the economy have placed upon our goals.

But none of these and the other myriad of activities that our club does could have been made possible without the cooperation, giving, and hard work among our members. All of you are what have made and will continue to make this club great! During my year while networking in the District, I had the chance to learn about other clubs and attend various Rotary District functions, and it occurred to me that our club stands tall in comparison with most of the others. When I was asked to apply for club awards that will be given out by our District later this week at the Annual Club Banquet in Verona, I was amazed that I was able to complete EVERY category of excellence recognized. Oswego did this? Oswego did that? Yes, we did! That makes a statement we should all be proud of -- that we are doing full service and more in our many projects as an award-winning club in the eyes of RI. We made significant contributions to Water for the World and to Polio plus, we gave contributions for year two of five to the local Salvation Army, and we contributed to literacy campaigns, the thesaurus project – plus we funded a Ryla Student. We hosted and touched the life of an exchange student from Venezuela, Andrea Gonzalez, who will forever keep Oswego in her heart. We were able to invigorate and participate with our High School’s Interact club, and we preserved our Rotaract Club at SUNY Oswego. And we were even able to start a Second Rotaract Club at Cayuga College. The Pennies for Polio project was successful, netting over $400 in extra change for the eradication of Polio. We sent money to Japan for its disaster relief. We added several important new members to the club. We started a fantastic and successful new fundraising raffle, thanks to Mark DuFore, which netted the club nearly $3000. We also created new committees to study and improve membership, fundraising, public relations, and communications. We have a brand-new web site, plus a Facebook page that will help our club’s exposure in the local and district networking and media, and we preserved and improved the quality of the fine programs we have all come to enjoy every week, thanks to Sue Witmer. Our Gala Paul Harris Community event last week enjoyed an Oswego one-of-a-kind success that affirmed to everyone who attended that our presence, good works, and the embodiment of Rotary’s Credo “Service above Self” is very much alive and active in our world. We culminated our year with Deana Masuicca, Bill Reilly, and Dave Granoff receiving Paul Harris Awards for a total of six recipients during the past year. This year has truly been a year that all of us should be proud of. But to have a championship year, you have to have a championship team. A few “stars” are necessary, but it’s the overall talent of individual team members cooperating and contributing that makes the winning difference. Our Rotary “team” has depth in its membership that made this past year memorable and successful for the club because of their significant contributions of time, effort, creativity, and donations. I would like to thank some of the special “stars,” including Assistant Governor Joette Deane and Past President Terry Gorman, for their advice and guidance, plus the Officers on the Board -- Secretary Mark DuFore, Treasurer Ann Seifried, President-Elect Dave Welsch, and Vice President Tom Ingram (our weekly Axle Editor) for their friendship, dedication, and expertise. And may I add additional thanks to Jon Spaulding at the Palladium Times for his help with our public relations, Sue Witmer for her never-ending assistance with programming, Gary Paricio for his assistance with web site and GSE Team events -- and everyone else in this room who has stepped up to the challenge to make this a great year! Lest I forget, I would like to acknowledge a very special thanks to Vern Tryon, who has provided his global expertise, assistance, and friendship throughout this and every year. Being president gave me a chance to see the unbelievably fantastic sides of Rotary that only this office could reveal. Meeting the GSE Team from England and working with the district administration was a truly enlightening experience, and it showed me that universal feelings and intentions to create a compassionate and improved world are really the same in peoples’ minds and hearts everywhere. Learning more about the good works and important, often life-saving programs that RI runs in an otherwise topsy-turvy, cruel world was much like discovering an oasis of humanity in an otherwise seemingly desert world of human conditions. And getting to know all of you on a first name basis and working with you as friends and colleagues was a very special opportunity for which I will always be grateful.

I wish you well, Dave Welsch, in your new year as President. The strong 84-year tradition of Oswego Rotary will be with you as you move forward with our newly approved RI Associate Membership Program, enhanced PR and media exposure, energized youth programs, and invigorated fundraising base. I wish you great success and look forward to working with you for the common goals of Rotary. Thank you.”

Outgoing President Dave Granoff

Dave Welsch’s Remarks “My friends…Three years ago I stood before you as a new member of the Oswego Rotary Club, speaking about the natural progression in my life that led to that point. I stand here today, honored to be named as President for the coming year -- and proud of this Club and what it does to exemplify the Rotary Slogan of “Service Above Self.” My most sincere thanks go to my father -- Rotarian, Paul Harris Fellow, Sustaining Member, and North Scranton Rotary Past-President, Donald Welsch -- for making me a Paul Harris Fellow and for instilling, along with my mother, the ideal of “Service Above Self” in me as a child. Many thanks also to my Rotary sponsor and long-time friend and colleague, Bill Crist, to my daughters, Ashley and Tory, and to my wife of nearly 31 years, Dianne -- for enduring what has passed and what is to come for the next 365 days. The next 365 days… Right now, that seems like a long time. But, of course, it is not. It is but a short time that we can work together to make a difference in the world. My hope is that this is the year we actually do it. This will be the year that, for the first time in human history, we eradicate a disease. This will be the year that we end polio! But there’s much more to Rotary, than the End of Polio. For the coming year, Rotary International President, Kalyan Banerjee has placed his focus on three major areas: family, continuity, and change. This year we’ll work together on these areas, as they relate to membership, service, the Rotary Foundation, students and youth, leadership development, and public relations. Family is the core. When the family is in harmony, when the family is built on a solid foundation -- everything else falls into place. We will work to build and to nurture our Rotary Family with exciting and innovative recruitment and retention Programs that allow our new members to “fall in love” with Rotary. Once you realize the joy and satisfaction of “Service Above Self,” you’re hooked. Bring a Friend to Lunch. Later, ask them to consider joining our family. There is no better way to bring new members to the Club.

We’ll begin holding monthly, informal meetings as part of our new Associate Member Pilot Program, and we’ll encourage our members to present programs about their careers, interests, and hobbies. We’ll continue our support of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, sending a student for valuable leadership training this summer. After a review of our current service initiatives, we’ll update and utilize our Club’s “Three-Year Plan” to move forward and to provide service to the community. Of course, Polio remains as one of our primary focuses. This will be the year that we eradicate a disease. We’re this close! Quarterly Foundation programs and regular Foundation minutes will promote the “Every Rotarian, Every Year” initiative and will motivate us all to become Sustaining Members. We must continue to build and support the New Generation of Rotarians by means of continued support for the Interact Club, the Rotaract Club at Oswego State, the new Rotaract Club at Cayuga Community College, and the creation of a new Earlyact club in our elementary schools. We’ll also explore the possibility of participating in the “It Takes a Man to Be a Dad” program after updating our local needs assessment. We’ll continue to grow as leaders in Rotary thru the Rotary Leadership Institute, President-Elect Training, and District Assembly. The 2012 District Conference will be easy for all to attend, as it’s being held in Verona. Three, reasonably priced packages make it affordable to attend this valuable, inspiring weekend. We’ll entice and encourage our new members to serve on committees and we’ll expand club visitations and idea sharing. We must tell the story of Rotary. Because we do good things, we think everybody knows about us. We’ll continue and step up an aggressive promotion and marketing plan utilizing the Palladium-Times, the Oswego Shopper, OswegoCountyToday.com, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn --to tell the Oswego Rotary Club Story. The easier something is to do, the more effective it will be. And so we’ll streamline our committee structure and revamp our duty roster to more efficiently do the work of Rotary and to promote our theme for the year, “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.” I encourage you to read this Month’s “Rotarian” to learn more about this theme and the man who created it -- our new Rotary International President, Kalyan Banarjee. Some time ago, someone told me that one person can’t change the world. I disagree. One and one and one and one can indeed change the world – by “Reaching Within to Embrace Humanity.” I’m so excited about the coming year and I know that you are as well. Thank you for your confidence. Thank you for your continued “Service Above Self!”
