As Schneck’s Director of the Development Department and the Executive Director of Schneck’s Foundation Board, I spend a considerable amount of time in conversations around philanthropy. It has been during these conversations, I have come to realize, my idea of philanthropy can be vastly different from individuals or groups with whom I am engaging. Generally, philanthropy is synonymous with financial gifting. This is an accurate assumption; however, from this department’s perspective, gifting and receiving financial support is a result or the outcome that occurs from education, engagement, building relationships, and developing connections. It is not fundraising; it is “friend”raising. Our “friends” understand the importance of having quality healthcare in our own backyard. They realize that without growth, our communities could be at risk for losing the valuable asset our healthcare system provides to this area. We know there are other organizations, with very worthy causes, that deserve to be supported. Friendraising is about our desire to offer a donor-centered journey that stimulates folks to want to impact the lives of those in need of our services. We want to be a guide to our friends, take our donors by the hand, welcome them onboard to making a lasting impact, and show them how their gifting has impacted our community in the past, the present, and in the future. So ultimately, the importance of philanthropy to Schneck is the ability to allow our friends to show their compassion, empathy, and support for those in need. Our Foundation’s friend-base has been instrumental in funding important projects, programs, and services over the years. This has given Schneck the opportunity to focus on planning for necessary construction to support physicians and practices with staffing requirements, which is essential to meeting our growing community’s healthcare needs. As our friend-base grows, our ability to remain independent as a stand-alone organization is critical. Consider this quote by Joyce Meyer, “We don’t grow when things are easy; we grow when we face challenges.” This is important because we have seen, in nearby communities, local hospitals being bought out by larger systems causing the following: Discontinued services, forcing patients and their families to travel great distances for care that were once just minutes from home Birthing Centers no longer available locally Availability of in-patient care gone Complete hospital systems closing down (i.e.: Martinsville, IN) Growth is necessary for Schneck to continue to be instrumental in improving the health of our communities. As a partner in that effort, the Foundation must approach its grant making in alignment with Schneck and have a common vision. Past fundraising, centered on friendraising, created a solid foundation for Schneck to build on, allowing for present growth, and has assisted in securing stability for the future. A gift is good, but it’s just a gift. Friendship leads to loyal commitment, and loyal commitment leads to a desire to maintain the ability for grant making to be a dynamic force into the future.

This is an accurate assumption; however, from this department’s

perspective, gifting and receiving financial support is a result or the outcome that occurs from education, engagement, building relationships, and developing connections.

This has given Schneck the opportunity to focus on planning for necessary construction

to support physicians and practices with staffing requirements, which is essential to meeting our growing community’s healthcare needs. As our friend-base grows, our ability to remain independent as a stand-alone organization is critical.

Consider this quote by Joyce Meyer, “We don’t grow when things are easy; we grow when we face challenges.” This is important because we have seen, in nearby communities, local hospitals being bought out by larger systems causing the following:

• Discontinued services, forcing patients and their families to travel great distances for care that were once just minutes from home • Birthing Centers no longer available locally

• Availability of in-patient care gone

• Complete hospital systems closing down (i.e.: Martinsville, IN)

Growth is necessary for Schneck to continue to be instrumental in improving the health of our communities.

Schneck Building on Its Commitment of Caring and HealingIn January 2018, Schneck Medical Center broke ground on the largest construction project in our history focused on providing enhanced access and fulfilling our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve. Our last major expansion was completed in 2009 and included our Cancer Center and the five-story south wing. At that time, we anticipated the expansion would meet our needs for at least 15 years. As our communities continue to grow, it is critical that Schneck also grows to serve the needs of our patients. Our research, completed in 2016, coupled with input from residents and community leaders, indicated that our communities needed convenient access to more healthcare providers and services. To address those needs, in 2017, we developed an aggressive physician recruiting plan to add 35 physicians. The next challenge was to provide adequate space for those new physicians and staff, so it became evident that we needed to expand our facilities. In late 2017, we committed to this expansion so we could continue to provide excellent healthcare to our communities. Today, you are seeing that commitment come to life. This expansion strengthens our ability to meet the needs of our communities. I am proud to announce that, to date, we have recruited 27 family and specialty physicians. And with the opening of the Schneck Professional Building, we are better equipped to meet the needs of our friends and families. Incorporating new design features to improve and expand delivery of care, the Schneck Professional Building is a five-floor, 80,000-square-foot facility offering Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease specialists, Neurosurgery, Pain Center, Primary Care, Surgical Associates, Bariatrics, and a Vein Center. Our goal is to make your healthcare convenient, streamlined, and comprehensive – while at the same time, easy to access. Mary Schneck, who 109 years ago, had the vision of building a community hospital, would be pleased to see how much we have grown - from a 17-bed hospital to a healthcare delivery system with nine affiliated locations in four counties, and, one of the most-respected health institutions in the nation. The opening of the Schneck Professional Building begins a new chapter in Schneck’s history, and demonstrates our dedication to provide excellent care and our commitment to making a real, meaningful difference. The residents in our communities are at the heart of this project. I am extremely pleased and proud that they have placed their confidence and trust in Schneck Medical Center, and I thank them for making Schneck their provider of choice. The Foundation has played a critical role in Schneck’s growth and mission to improve the health of our communities—a mission that, with your partnership, enables us to build on our commitment of caring and healing.

SHS Football Parents Club Donates to Schneck Cancer CenterSeymour High School was honored to have Hall of Fame Coach Joe Goodman at Bulleit Stadium on September 7, 2018, for the varsity football game vs. Floyd Central.

The theme for the evening was “Joe Strong Night,” specifically focusing on cancer awareness.

Coach Goodman was recognized for 30 years of coaching football at Seymour High School, his service to the Seymour community, and his fight against cancer.

Donations collected during halftime by the Seymour High School Football Parents Club in his name amounted to $3,853 and were given to the Schneck Foundation, ultimately supporting the Don and Dana Myers Cancer Center.

The Owls did it for Joe and rallied back to defeat Floyd Central, 27-22.

2018-2019 LADY OWLS / LADY BRAVES

“County vs. Cancer” BASKETBALL GAME

Everyone has 24 hours in a day, and it is our decision on what we do with that time. Making the decision to volunteer with the Business Relations Committee and Jennings County Advisory Council at Schneck Medical Center has been a great way to serve and give back to my community. The time I have spent at Schneck has allowed me to create positive relationships with the staff and other volunteers. These relationships have allowed me to become a face in the community to advocate for Schneck. Furthermore, these relationships have encouraged me to promote health and wellness throughout Jennings

County, Jackson County, and within my own lifestyle. Being a part of the Schneck family has made me appreciate the wonderful care that my family and I have received.

Time is precious; however, the last sixteen months that I have volunteered at Schneck have been priceless. I am very appreciative of this opportunity and look forward to growing my relationship with Schneck Medical Center.

The Seymour Lady Owls and Brownstown Lady Braves basketball teams joined forces once again to raise money for the Don and Dana Myers Cancer Center through their annual “County vs. Cancer” basketball game on November 29, 2018.

As a result of their hard work and efforts, the teams raised $3,585.00, which was donated to the Schneck Foundation.

Dr. Ryan Hennessy I’ve always loved Indiana, and wanted to practice in a rural environment. Seymour is close to what seems to be everything, and everyone at Schneck was kind, funny, and felt like family. That is hard to find. There was no contest. Looking forward to starting.

Dr. Courtney GlosWhen I talked to Schneck’s Physician Recruiter on the phone, I immediately felt like I was talking to an old friend, even though we didn’t know each other. I had the same feeling of a work family when I met everyone in person. The proximity to my husband’s job, with the small community feel I was looking for in a practice, made Schneck an easy choice for our family.

Dr. Wendy GoldsteinI’m so excited to be part of the community! Everyone I have met has been so warm, kind and welcoming. I was born in a small town and am excited to return to a small town.

“I want to recognize Lea for the excellent care she gave my daughter and me. I had a scheduled C-section in the morning and everything went well. By the afternoon though, there were tornado warnings and things got a little crazy. The entire OB staff was amazing, keeping everyone calm and informing us as to what was going on. I felt very safe. I could not have received any better care than at Schneck.”

“I would like to thank and recognize Dr. Hallam, Desirae, and Ariel for their exceptional care. They all were very informative and helpful. This was our first baby, so everything was new to us. Dr. Hallam kept the mood light and kept me calm at the same time! I felt like this experience could not have been any better.”

“I had no wait time, which was great. I arrived early and they took me right back to see Dr. Kartha, who was awesome! He was so friendly and listened to all of my concerns.”

“We received excellent care at Schneck. I work in the medical profession and have never met a nurse as compassionate as Kaitlin on OB. I met her when she helped deliver my first child three years ago, and it was so nice having her back in the delivery room with me. A few days after being discharged, we had to take our baby girl back to the hospital and I was so nervous and upset. Kaitlin was working on OB and knew we were in the ED because they had to call OB for an instrument. Kaitlin came to the ER after she got off work to check on us. She does not know how much that meant to me!”

“Dr. Brooks and his team were amazing! I can see better than I have my entire life.”

“Wendy registered me over the phone, and that was so quick and painless. Thank you!”

It has been an exciting year watching all the new construction and renovations at Schneck Medical Center.

As our hospital continues to grow, so does EPiC. It is so wonderful that after 18 years, EPiC continues to thrive. The employees at Schneck are amazing for keeping EPiC so successful with their willingness to give back to our organization and communities we serve.

I have enjoyed serving on the committee for 14 years, working alongside other Schneck employees, and serving as the 2019 Chairman.

Kim HackmanEPiC Chair

WHY IS GIVING TO EPiC IMPORTANT?

Thank you Schneck Medical Center employees for your continued generosity!

Financial gifts from employees given to EPiC help support the success of Schneck Medical Center. Employees at Schneck Medical Center give back over $100,000 each year to EPiC, which helps fund projects throughout the hospital that may not have otherwise been funded at the current time.

The community depends on Schneck to offer advanced services close to home, directly impacting patient care and improving the health of our communities.

Additionally, EPiC sets aside $10,000 of their fundraising efforts for the Humanitarian Fund, assisting fellow co-workers facing unexpected financial hardship.

Since inception in 2001, the EPiC giving group has gifted back over $1 million dollars to the Schneck Foundation and is currently sitting at 81% employee participation. The national average for workplace giving is 9%.

When you give to EPiC, you give to your community, and EPiC takes pride in its mission of philanthropy.

Kind Caring Giving

Supporting EPiC as Committee Chair

2018 Indiana Hospital Association Management GraduatesIn 1982, Indiana Hospital Association partnered with the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs to create the Management Institute. Since its founding, more than 1,300 hospital managers have graduated from the Management Institute.

These graduates are then able to take what they have learned – from healthcare-specific financial management and insight, to teamwork and conflict-resolution strategies – and apply this new knowledge to their respective workplaces almost immediately.

Schneck Medical Center is proud to recognize graduates of the 2018 Management Institute: Ashley MacTavish, JoAnn Branaman, Kelly Franklin, and Sonia Bobb.

Congratulations!

The Amanda M. Dick Honorary Scholarship was established through the Schneck Foundation to support female candidates pursuing a career in the medical field and currently accepted into medical school.

In honor of his wife Dr. Amanda Dick, Dr. Andrew Dick started this scholarship in 2018 as a surprise birthday present. The Amanda M. Dick Honorary Scholarship is intended to support women pursuing a career in the medical field. To be considered, candidates must apply annually for the Amanda M. Dick Honorary Scholarship, awarded each year in May.

Candidates must be female and currently accepted into medical school. Primary consideration will be given to Jackson, Jennings, Scott, and Washington county residents. Residents of other counties may be considered based on availability of funds and at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.

Congratulations to the 2019-2020 recipient, Stephanie Davenport, a graduate of Seymour High School. Stephanie is currently attending the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine to become a doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. She also serves as the Secretary/Treasurer on the Executive Council of the Student American Academy of Osteopathy (SAAO).

WHY IS GIVING TO EPiC IMPORTANT?

Thank you Schneck Medical Center employees for your continued generosity!

The Champion of Care program at Schneck Medical Center provides an opportunity for patients to show appreciation for the care they, or a loved one, received. Maybe it was a kind word, a gentle smile, or a warm blanket that brought comfort to them, or a loved one. The Champion of Care donation is a way to say thank you in recognition of excellent care provided. Whether it was a doctor, nurse, assistant, housekeeper, or anyone else, we invite you to recognize our employees by making a monetary donation. This donation will be used to allow Schneck to support our vision: To be an organization of excellence, leading transformation and advancing health. If you have a Champion of Care to recognize, please contact the Schneck Foundation Office at 812-524-4244.

“I always recommend Schneck to my family and friends. The staff is so professional and competent. Why would someone travel many miles when we have this facility so close to home? Thank you Schneck!“

“In our recent visits to Schneck, we have relied on the services of the Translators: Estela, Mimi, Maria, and Melly. I could sing their praises all day for being available! We not only appreciate the excellent assistance each one provides, but we also wanted to share our appreciation to Schneck for providing this service to meet our needs. We also want to recognize Deena in Home Services because she allowed the Translator to be present during our home visit. Everyone we encountered was so helpful and caring. While shopping in the community, we were approached by Schneck staff members, and they asked us how we were doing. Despite how busy we all are, Schneck staff always makes an effort to put themselves in our shoes and care for us, even outside of the hospital! We are so thankful for everything.”

“Dietitians Lesley and Andi met me in the lobby to show me where Andi’s office was located. They were very nice and when we got to Andi’s office, Lesley thanked me for coming and said I was in good hands, and I agree! Andi was concerned for my health needs, being a diabetic, and her explanations of my questions were very understanding. Thank you so much, Andi. You made a world of difference to me!”

“Terri (NP) at Schneck Primary Care is so thorough, smart, and caring. I just love her and ask for her rather than my doctor!”

“Terri’s nurse at Schneck Primary Care was extra helpful and always goes above and beyond for her patients. I cannot explain enough how awesome she was!”

“All the staff at Schneck is great. That is why I love coming here for my healthcare.”

“Dr. Kozlowski did my C-section at 2am and was awesome! She even came in and checked on me the next morning.”
