In celebration of the incredible generosity of donors, the University Hospitals Kings-ton Foundation (UHKF) recently hon-oured some outstand-ing individuals and organizations through the Davies Awards for Philanthropic Leadership and the Ian Wilson Award for Volunteerism in Fundraising.

“Your friends, rela-tives and neighbours have access to the best care possible, right here in Kings-ton, because of you,” UHKF Board Chair Richard Kizell told donors and hospi-tal supporters at the annual Community Celebration June 20.

“Because of you, health care providers are able to use state-

of-the-art equipment, diagnostics and techniques to provide us all with excellent quality care.”

The Davies Awards for Philanthropic Leadership are awarded annu-ally to people and organizations in recognition of out-standing philan-thropic leadership benefiting Kings-ton’s university hospitals.

This year, Michael and Elaine Davies presented them to three very worthy recipients –The Empire Life Insur-ance Company, the Kinsmen Club of Kingston and the John M. & Bernice Parrott Foundation.

The Ian Wilson Award for Volunteerism in fundraising honours those who, like UHKF’s former campaign chair Ian Wilson, set themselves apart by their incredible commitment, undying enthusiasm and effort they devote to volunteer work on behalf of Kingston’s hospitals and UHKF.

Chris Cunningham was presented with the second annual Ian Wilson award. He has served as Vice Chair of Hotel Dieu Hospital, Chair of Providence Care and most recently Chair of KGH. Chris has been a long-time believer and supporter of fundraising initiatives for the hospitals.

Hotel Dieu Hospitalhits project milestoneIt was ice cream and punch all around in mid-July as staff gathered for a blessing and ribbon cutting celebration to mark the completion of Hotel Dieu Hospital’s new Gift Shop and staircase in the main lobby. A new express coffee kiosk will also open soon.

Construction crews are nearly finished the job of transforming space on Jeanne Mance 4 and 5 into bright and spacious clinic suites that will help accommodate 82 specialized outpatient clinics transferring from Kingston General Hospital (KGH).

Patients will be given ample notice about the transfer and about the new location of their clinic at Hotel Dieu. Meanwhile, in late August, several clinics at Hotel Dieu will be making an internal move down the hall to Jeanne Mance 4 to open

the way for the construction of the new Cystoscopy suite on Johnson 4.

Providence Care project advancesAfter a planning update on June 18 at a community information night, members of the public had an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas about

Providence Care’s redevelopment project with Board Chair Glen Wood, President & CEO Dale Kenney and Director of Planning Michael Ross. They also had the opportunity to speak with planning team Clinical Lead Maureen McGuire and Karen Blachford, a former patient involved in redevelopment. Representa-tives from Infrastructure Ontario and UHKF were also on site to answer ques-tions about their role in creation of the new Providence Care Hospital.

What was evident from the public forum is that there is great support to build the Providence Care Hospital. Members of the community are interested in the next stages of planning for the hospital and eager to learn more about Infrastructure Ontario’s use of the remaining lands (a project seperate from redevelopment) at the King Street West site.

When Drs. Walt Emrich and Bob West first conceived the idea of holding an invitational golf tournament to raise funds for a CT scanner at Hotel Dieu Hospital, the concept of raising money through such an event was new.

For the first two decades of the tournament’s history, Dr. Emrich was virtually solely responsible for its success. Many recall the wonderful prizes that he would arrange for year after year.

Twenty-five years later, both Emrich and West were on the card for the now sponsored tournament that is organized as one of the UHKF signature events. A few constants remain: the spirit of competition for tournament prizes and the dedication of participants who help raise funds to support patient care equipment at Hotel Dieu.

Sponsored by BMO Financial Group, the 25th annual Hotel Dieu Invitational Golf Tournament was held July 13 at the Loyalist Golf & Country Club. This year golfers teed off in support of the

much-needed $1.1 million expansion of the ophthal-mology clinic.The demand for eye care services has tripled in the last seven years – that’s 60,000 more patient visits– and is expect-ed to continue

to grow as many older patients require vision-restoring procedures. Conserva-tive estimates point to an increase in the number of patient visits to 75,000 by 2015.

Hotel Dieu now has more ophthal-mologists to provide care, but there isn’t enough space, and the space that is available isn’t designed for the way we deliver patient care today. Patients face extended wait times in crowded spaces.

Many are older, frail and have walking aids, due to poor eyesight. The current space doesn’t easily accommodate wheelchairs and other mobility aids.

Hotel Dieu’s plan is to expand the ophthalmology services currently located on the sixth floor of the Jeanne Mance Wing. The expansion will include:• five new exam lanes • an intra-ocular injection suite• expansion of the current diagnostic area

The benefits of an investment in the expansion of ophthalmology services are many: • More access to diagnosis and treatment• Shorter wait times• Improved safety and comfort• A better environment to retain and recruit the top eye specialists in the country support this expansion.

I’m proud to be a part of a commu-nity that has ac-complished so much in the past several years.

Everywhere I look, I see signs of progress

and of an enhanced quality of life for all of us. But nowhere is our progress more evident than in our hospitals.

This year, we celebrated the opening of our newly expanded Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario, as well as our regional inpatient dialysis unit. We saw the new outpatient clinics at Hotel Dieu take shape and plans announced for the move of clinics from KGH to Hotel Dieu. We saw the new Providence Care

Hospital move one step closer to “shovel in ground” and we expect this project will go to tender before the end of the calendar year.

These milestones were reached because of the generous support that you and others gave to our hospitals. Your contribution of the “local share” for these projects helped to secure hundreds of millions of dollars of investment in our hospitals and our regional economy by the Province.

But more importantly, your contributions have had a profound impact on patients. Chances are someone close to you has already benefitted from one of these new and improved care environments. On behalf of all the patients who have been touched by your generosity, thank you. Because of you, our entire region has

access to better care environments and better care experiences.

In the years ahead, there will be new opportunities for us to step up and invest again in our quality of life and health through our gifts. New buildings, new and advanced care and diagnostic equipment, and an exciting initiative to expand our local capacity to participate in world-class medical research all lay ahead on the path.

But for the moment, I invite you to pause and reflect on the good that you have accomplished through your gifts. Because of you… we all enjoy a better quality of life and health.

And we thank you.

“Cheque” it out!


There were more than a million reasons to smile at the 14th Annual Rose of Hope Tournament. This event raises funds to help fight cancer across southeastern Ontario. Proceeds from the July 31 event at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club ($90, 166) pushed the grand total raised by the volunteer-organized event to over $1 million.

This year’s proceeds will be used to purchase Hi-Lo beds at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at KGH. Visit the UHKF Facebook page for more photos and watch the Dancing Queen flash mob on the UHKFdn YouTube channel.

Joe and Lucie Pal and their family have been residents of the Thousand Islands, students of Queen’s University and closely associated with Kingston General Hospital for many years.

On July 20, they paid a special visit to KGH, a hospital they say that has always been there for their family, has served them well and has given a very positive health care experience. But there was something a bit different about this visit. It was in celebration of a generous gift they made to the new inpatient mental health unit at KGH, which included, in part, a beautiful gallery of artwork on Burr 4 and enabled the Expressions Gallery of inpatient-created work on Empire 2.

The Pal family’s decision to donate to mental health at KGH comes from the knowledge that many other illnesses such as cardiac disease and cancer are already being well supported, Joe Pal said. Many people are touched by mental illness and the Pals decided it is time to give this area of care the attention it deserves. “We really wanted to raise awareness to this part of sickness in our society,” he said, in an effort to help reduce stigmatization.

Following a tour of the Burr 4 gallery and of the Expressions Gallery, Joe said the

results that are being made by the artwork and through the hospital’s art committee are “quite impactful.”

In making a significant contribution to the inpatient unit several months ago, Joe and Lucie were touring the space when Joe noticed that a main hallway appeared bleak. That is when the idea for the gal-lery was sparked. The family, in their love of art, knowing the power and impact art can have on bringing serenity and happiness to people, chose to contribute a collection of paintings by local artists in addition to a large donation to this space.

The Pal family hopes that this collec-tion will contribute to making an already beautiful space even more inviting and tranquil for patients and their families who receive care and visit KGH.

Bursaries at Providence Care

Healing through art thanks to the Pal family

One way to leave a lasting legacy to the health care of your community is through an educational endowment fund. On June 19, the impact these types of funds can have was front and centre as Providence Care held its 12th Annual Providence Care Foundation Staff Bursary & Iva Speers Endowment Bursaries luncheon.

About 75 people from across Providence Care were able to attend professional conferences, courses or participate in furthering their formal education with support from the awards program. In all, $325,000 has been awarded over the last 12 last years to support a variety of educational activities for Providence Care staff.

KGH cardiac nurse Romney Pierog is an incredibly talented and caring individual. She’s also very busy with her family, work at the hospital and her G.E.M Jewelry business. She not only balances the demands of daily life - she’s interwoven them in an effort to help raise funds for the cardiac program at KGH.

Twenty-five per cent of proceeds from the sale of her specially-designed Mending Broken Hearts items (modelled by staff, patients and family members from the hospital program) is donated to the cardiac program “to enable us to keep mending hearts together.”

Q. How long have you worked in Kingston’s hospitals?

A. I was fortunate to be the first RN to join the Ophthalmology Clinic at Kingston General Hospital (KGH) in 1989, & transferred from KGH to HDH with the Ophthalmology Service in 1997.

Prior to joining the Eye Clinic, I worked in the Intensive Care Unit at KGH, and then went to Victory 4 as the Assistant Head Nurse on the Ophthalmology and Urology surgical ward. So, I have really been with Ophthalmology for 32 years.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your role?

A. We treat a variety of patients from infants to centenarians with a variety of eye diseases. Last year, we saw over 70,000 patients

between our two clinics and diagnostic areas.I love to see the growth within our department. We are a strong team of physicians, residents, technicians, nurses, ward clerks & technician students.

The treatments offered for Ophthalmol-ogy patients today has come so far. For example, patients with wet macular degeneration now have an effective treatment, and there are successful treatments for our glaucoma patients, to mention two of our many specialties.

Q. We know the need for specialized eye care is growing. What does this mean for people like you on the front lines?

A. We are constantly learning new procedures and developing technical skills. There is so much to learn.

Q. What do patients say about the Ophthalmology program?

A. Our patients are grateful for the service we provide. I often hear how happy they are with the treatment from our physicians & staff.

In spite of the long waits that many of our patients endure, they appreciate having

the quality care we can provide.Vision is one of our most treasured gifts, and patients are grateful for the care ophthalmology provides.

Q. What will expansion mean for patients?

A. Although we are in cramped quarters now, we will soon be enjoying a new expansion. This will help with providing improved care for our patients. Our nurses will have an injection suite to prepare retinal patients for their numerous injections.

This will free up more space on the Johnson 6 area for other ophthalmol-ogy patients. We will be able to spread our Ophthalmology specialties down the Jeanne Mance 6 corridor as well. Our photography lab is well designed and our technicians will enjoy the improved space.

Q. Anything else you would like to add?

A. Ophthalmology continues to be a challenging, dynamic program. I feel very fortunate to be part of this wonderful team.
