Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation recently received a $750,000, three-year grant, from The Duke Endowment to develop a collaborative network of health care for the low income, uninsured residents of Burke County. This network is called the Burke Health Network and consists of numerous local organizations.
Eligible individuals of the network will receive essential information to help them choose where they might establish a medical home. They will have access to a full continuum of medical care. They will also be able to access funds to assist with transportation, food, housing and other needs.
“The resources provided by The Duke Endowment will help our community meet the needs of our medically uninsured. Encouraging decision making will empower members to take more control of their healthcare decisions and hopefully make other constructive decisions in their lives,” said Jan Hollar, Executive Director, Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation.
FoundationReceives $750,000 Grant For the second consecutive year the
teammates of Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge came together in a big way to support the Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation’s annual HOPE Campaign.
The HOPE Campaign – which stands for Helping Our Patients and Employees – gives teammates a chance to make an annual donation to the Foundation by payroll deduction, etc. This year 72 percent of staff contributed – an increase from last year’s 69 percent participation rate. In 2016, the participation rate was 39 percent.
“This was a record high year in both the dollar amount raised and participation rate among staff,” said Jan Hollar, executive director of the Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation. “More than $157,000 was raised. All funds raised will remain in our area to assist meeting unmet needs. We are

Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development, management and distribution of gifts that assist Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge in providing excellent healthcare. The organization manages more than $2.3 million in 30 different projects. In addition, the Foundation also seeks grant opportunities that support the system and the community.
Since 2011, the Foundation has been awarded over $4.5 million in support of the following: Cancer Program, Residency Program, Mountain Valley Health Center, Good Samaritan Clinic, Tobacco Prevention, and much more.

extremely pleased with the level of support the Foundation has received this year from our employees.”
The slogan for the campaign is, “I am HOPE.” “We want our teammates to feel empowered in knowing they can be the HOPE for our patients, and each other, by participating in the Foundation’s HOPE Campaign,” said Kerri McFalls, the Foundation’s fund development specialist.
“It’s a reminder that we can all be in situations where we need each other’s help,” said Autumn Hickman, Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge teammate about the HOPE Campaign. “Usually when I am filling out the (HOPE) card I am thinking of the golden rule - To do unto others as you would have them do unto you. And that to me means if I needed that help it would be there for me. So, I want it to be there for those in need.”
“At one time I was a single mom and needed the assistance myself,” said teammate Regina Tipton. “In addition, I give funds to Options (through Burke County United Way), the battered women’s shelter. (The campaign) just supports so many different things.
During the campaign, employees are invited to participate by donating to either of the following: The Foundation’s Granting HOPE fund, Chaplains’ Discretionary Fund, Children’s Miracle Network or Burke County United Way.

After complaints from breast cancer patients about the use of traditional hospital gowns, the Levine Cancer Institute Blue Ridge identified a new and fashionable alternative: “Radiant Wraps.”
With funding assistance from the Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation, the cancer center purchased the wraps for its breast cancer patients. The idea to purchase the wraps stemmed from a patient satisfaction survey the cancer center conducted in 2014. Many of our breast cancer patients described the traditional hospital gowns as uncomfortable or “ugly,” said Joseph Rodriquez, oncology service line director. Not to mention, the gowns left behind pieces of lent on patients’ clothing after radiation therapy treatment.
As a result, Rodriguez and his team saw this as an opportunity to research other gown options for the women to wear during treatment. That’s when they found Radiant Wraps. The company, based out of California, was started by a breast cancer survivor with similar concerns about the traditional hospital gowns. The
company is dedicated to providing women with a more stylish and comfortable alternative to traditional hospital gowns. The wraps cost between $37 and $47 each.
Since 2014, the cancer center has given out around 400 of the Radiant Wraps for female patients receiving breast or lung radiation therapy, Rodriguez said. The wraps were provided at no cost to the patients, he added.
Recently, with assistance from the Foundation’s Cancer Care Fund, the cancer center purchased an additional 200 wraps for its patients, Rodriguez said. “It is our intent to continue to offer this hospital gown alternative to the same patient population to sustain patient satisfaction,” he said, adding how the wraps allow for greater ease for the patients in visualizing their skin for positioning during radiation therapy treatment.
“Women undergoing radiation therapy have a myriad of issues they must deal with during this time,” said Jan Hollar, executive director of the Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation.

Bailey reported that the tournament has raised more than $1.2 million since its inception. “We appreciate your support and dedication,” Bailey told all the golfers. The Healing Dragons of Lake James recently donated $10,000 to the Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation. The group raised the money by hosting the second annual Lake James Dragon Boat Festival on Sept. 30, 2017, where teams competed in racing the 44-foot-long boats. Members of the Lake James Dragon Boat presented the check to Ron Martin, chairman of the Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation and Leanne Brittain, Vice Chairperson. The funds will be used to provide mammograms to uninsured patients and to cancer care services, which fits in with the mission of the Healing Dragons: to inspire, encourage and support survivors of all cancers to triumph over the disease.
Foundation Just Made it a Lot Easier by Purchasing Radios for ED Use The Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation recently purchased headset radios for the
Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge Emergency Department to improve lines of communication and improve patient care.
The Foundation purchased the radios in February 2018. The staff started using them in mid-April, said David Everhart, RN, emergency department director.
They come equipped with 32 channels and connect as many as 18 staff at one time for instant communication, allowing them to work as one unit and access each other and information for the patient, instantly.
Implementation of the radios is a complex process, Everhart said, so the process has been broken down in two phases. The first phase linked registration, the ED lobby security officer, ED secretary, triage nurse and the clinical supervisor. “This gives us instant communication and response for assistance and sets up with a safety network to ensure that the Clinical Supervisor has situational awareness of events as they happen throughout the department,” Everhart said. “There are a lot of moving parts that sometimes run in the opposite direction, so this has given us the alignment we needed to ensure decisions are based on the bigger picture. Thus far we have certainly enhanced coordination of care in emergent situations, and I am confident that we will continue to see benefits over time as operations continue.”
If it had not been for the Foundation’s assistance, purchasing the radios would not have been possible, Everhart said.
“The Foundation is honored to have been a part of making this new process a reality,” said Jan Hollar, executive director, Blue Ridge HealthCare Foundation, “The Foundation strives to enhance patient care in every way that we can. Providing a faster response for our patients in emergency situations is critical.”
