EXPERIENCE AND OPPORTUNITIES

Our learners participate in a number of enrichment activities such as educational visits to London, Belton House, Lincoln and Nottingham, as well as fundraising activities, bake sales and lunch time clubs.

Some of the things we get up to:

• Catering learners entered the ‘Jamie’s Home Cooking Skills Competition’. Learners prepared and cooked lunch and also dressed the table ready for their guests.

• Motor Vehicle learners attend workshop sessions where they work on vehicles and learn lots of different skills such as: how to take the wheels off; how to check and change the lights; and how to take out the seats.

• Foundation learners volunteer in the College’s Corner Shop on the main campus that is opposite the Ingelow Centre. They work in the shop daily on a rota system, and are fully involved in its running, including receiving new stock, working on the till, serving customers and keeping it clean and tidy.

There are a wide range of work placements available for all learners (where appropriate) as part of their course. They are organised with the learner and take into account both their course of study and individual interests.

Placements are available within the college environment, and also at external businesses, and are managed by the Work Experience Coordinator.

“Before discovering what Boston College could offer for David, we were advised elsewhere that a day centre would be the most suitable next step for him. However, the ongoing advances in his ability are a reassuring reminder of the excellent support and encouragement he receives from the dedicated staff at the College’s Ingelow Centre, and that we made the right decision to trust in Boston College.

His lecturer, Tracy, is absolutely fantastic - her experience and Makaton communication skills, in addition to being able to understand David’s needs, are marvellous! We have noticed a difference in David; he is able to do more things independently, his confidence has grown and he’s able to interact and socialise with people.

The Ingelow Centre provides a safe environment for him to be involved in a variety of activities such as communication techniques, cooking and crafts, whilst having the support of the staff who will sit with him for ‘time out’ in the quiet room when he needs it. David has baked a cake in the i-Cafe, and even taken part in sports sessions at the College’s Peter Paine Performance Centre - we are amazed by the things he achieves at College.”
