Jon McCluskey teaches 5th and 6th grade special education atClaymont Intermediate School. The students in his reading classhave difficulties with reading comprehension. The difficulties areoften compounded by the fact that several of his students do not readfluently.

The Claymont Foundation Grant that Iwas used to purchase thereading fluency program, Five Minutes to Better Reading Skills. Theexercises are very quick paced. The pace of the exercise is beneficial,as many of the students in my classroom have short attention spans. They use the program at least twice a week.

The drills are organized according to the phonic rules andcombinations that are used in reading. Each drill builds upon priordrills so that there is continual review and mastery of all readingconcepts. The students really enjoy the drills and are becomingcompetitive with the program. It is fun to see students take so muchpride in their work. Students are asking to take copies of the readingprogram home so that they can practice and keep up with theirfriends who may be at a higher level.

He has seen great improvements in the reading fluency of thestudents in my reading class. The students are becoming moreconfident in their reading selections, as they are choosing morechallenging books during silent reading time. The students in myreading class are benefiting greatly from this program which wasmade possible by the Claymont Foundation. Thanks to theFoundation for supporting the efforts of my students and supplyingme with the materials necessary to foster education within myclassroom.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee compact discs were used to helpstudents enrich their spelling and vocabulary skills and gainconfidence and success with spelling, including competition in theschool’s spelling bee. All language teachers were given a copy of thediscs to be loaned to students who wanted to study the words from acompact disc. All words in the Scripps National Spelling Bee bookand their meanings were pronounced and defined on the CD.Many seventh grade students voluntarily gave up their lunch timesfrom September through February to prepare for the bee, and theyused the discs as an accompaniment to the spelling bee book. Thisgrant was award to Gale Langford.

The Ace Program was developed to show students post graduation options that are available to them.Students from Buckeye Career Center came to Claymont Intermediate and provided demonstrations to 5th grade students in areas of hygiene and health care. This coincided with their visits to Twin CityHospital where they were given tours of the different departments of the hospital.
