Curator Welcome Message

Whether you scour the guide and plan each moment, wander the city seeing what you collide into, or a combination of both; Nocturne offers infinite versions to experience. It’s what I love about it. Through exploration and discovery, each of us walks away with a different impression of what Nocturne is.

The 2015 theme invites artists to peel away the layers, find new meaning, and offer commentary and consideration of what’s come before and what’s ahead.

As you explore Halifax and Dartmouth through the Nocturne lense be sure to lose yourself in the unfurling of the familiar and unfamiliar, discover new perspectives and vantage points, reflect on the departed, celebrate the new, and spark conversations with friends and strangers.

Thank you to the artists and organizers whose significant effort creates Nocturne. This city and region is home to an abundance of creative talent, a history and landscape that inspires and challenges us, and an audience that brings it all to life on October 17!

Nocturne 2015:

Found And Lost And Found

A city is made up and defined by people, places, and spaces, an ever changing and shifting entity; we shape our buildings and public spaces in small and significant ways, then they shape us, then we them again – ad infinitum. These places and spaces are shaped and re-shaped by changing social, political and cultural currents, real estate boom and bust, extreme weather and even disaster. Buildings are occupied and vacant, re-imagined, reconsidered, renovated and sometimes meet the wrecking ball, only to begin the process again and again. Shadows of these changes are etched on our collective and individual memories and sometimes the buildings and spaces themselves.

This year, as part of Nocturne, Curator Rose Zack asks artists to explore history, memory, consciousness, and the changes wrought by time in Halifax’s unique cultural, historical and social spaces. We consider what takes place in the moments between past and present, the familiar and the unknown, and the potential for subversion and change as part of this year’s curatorial theme: Found and Lost and Found.
