GOOD NEWSFOR ANIMALS!

INDIA BANS LIVE EXPORT OF ANIMALS FROM ALL PORTS

PHOTO OF GRIZZLY BEAR COURTESY OF: DWAYNE REILANDER

Charity is one of our residents at Popcorn Park. She is grateful that she was res-cued some time ago, and also that sheep in our country cannot be subjected tomulesing. You can sponsor this lucky little sheep in our Wildlife Club (page 9).

Nova Scotia has just passed new animal protection legislation that will putan end to cat declawing. Anyone who does so faces up to 6 months in jail& a $25,000 fine for a first offense. The legislation also means that taildocking, ear cropping, devocalizing of dogs & any other practice that is

purely for the cosmetic appeal of an animal is now banned. Provincial ani-mal welfare inspectors will also have enhanced powers to inspect any facility

where an animal is being used as well as the right to demand to see anyanimal present so they can do a welfare check.

This blanket ban will be in effect for an indefinite period of time, according to The Indian Express. Most exports were for the purpose ofslaughter.

NEW ZEALAND BANS CRUEL MULESING PRACTICE

Mulesing is a cruel, painful process where chunks of flesh are carved from thesheeps’ buttocks in an effort to prevent moisture buildup & “flystrike”between folds of skin. This process produces severe wounds; the bloodywounds attract flies, resulting in maggots on the rotting flesh. Thanks to theoutcry of animal advocates & PETA, the procedure has been outlawed in NewZealand effective October 1, 2018. Many people who wear wool do notknow about the process from mulesed sheep. Many brands have abandonedthe use of wool from mulesed sheep including Abercrombie & Fitch,American Eagle, & Coldwater Creek.

IWC REJECTS JAPAN’S PROPOSAL TORESUME COMMERCIAL WHALINGThe International Whaling Commission (IWC) rejected Japan’s recentproposal to nullify the moratorium on commercial whaling. Their pro-posal suggested establishing a process to determine catch limits forwhat the country called “abundant whale stocks/species”. This is inspite of the fact that the country has illegally killed protected whales inthe past & failed to submit welfare data to the IWC. The IWC has alarge, expanding, & impressive marine conservation agenda. Thewhales already must struggle against a number of threats & wouldseverely suffer from an immense added strain of commercial whaling.

SOUTH KOREA BANS ONE-YEAR REQUIREMENTON PESTICIDE TESTS ON ANIMALS

South Korea will abolish the cruel, uncalled-for, one-year dog test require-ment for pesticides, according to HIS. South Korea has joined the long listof nations who have gotten rid of antiquated testing requirements whichincludes the U.S., Canada, Japan & all countries in the European Union.

GREATER YELLOWSTONE GRIZZLIES ARESPARED FROM PLANNED HUNT

According to the National Parks Conservation Association, a judgeruled that the Trump administration’s action to strip EndangeredSpecies Act protections from the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem grizzlybears was illegal. This decision spares the grizzlies from the first huntin more than 40 years which was scheduled to begin this fall inWyoming & Idaho on lands including those outside of Grand Teton &Yellowstone National Parks.

CALIFORNIA TO BECOME FIRST STATE TO BANANIMAL TESTING FOR COSMETICS

SB1249 (Galgiani) would mean it is illegal for manufacturers to import orsell any cosmetic products if the products used to make them were tested

on animals on or after January 1, 2020. Other U.S. states need to follow tomake these outdated, unnecessary tests a thing of the past.

NOVA SCOTIA PASSES SEVERAL ANIMAL PROTECTION LAWS

BAN ON COMMERCIAL FISHING IN ARCTICFOR 16 YEARSAn international agreement signed in Greenland puts a 16 year ban oncommercial fishing across an expanse of the Arctic Ocean. The banaims to protect an area and its fragile ecosystem that is melting. Theagreement is between nine countries & the European Union. Althoughno fishing has taken place, large ships were reportedly beginning toexplore fishing opportunities. The countries that signed the agreementincludes the U.S., Canada, Russia, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Japan,South Korea, China, & the European Union which also pledged tobegin a joint program for scientific monitoring of the area.

WASHINGTONThe ALDF has sent notice to Olympic Game Farm, a roadside zoo inSequin, Washington, declaring its intent to sue the facility for keepinganimals including lions, tigers, and gray wolves in squalid, illegalcramped conditions in violation of the Endangered Species Act & statecruelty laws. The gray wolves are kept in small pens, lions exist in bar-ren, undersized cages without shelter from the cold & the animals areobserved in stereotypical stress behavior. Visitors throw unlimitedquantities of bread at the bears who languish without sufficient enrich-ment. The ALDF is offering to coordinate the transfer of all animals &work with the Olympic Game Farm to relocate the animals to qualifiedsanctuaries. A visitor observed a 5” gash across one of the bear’sshoulders. One of the tigers suffers from lameness in his back legs;likely the result of inadequate flooring & an inadequate water featurein which to swim. Earlier this year, an ailing tiger named Amadeuswas left on display while he was dying.

Wilbur-Ellis Co. & Diversified Ingredients were convicted in federal court afterpleading guilty of introducing adulterated & misbranded pet food ingredientsinto interstate commerce. Both were ordered to pay $7 million in fines. Theysubstituted inferior ingredients in pet food which is against the law. Wilbur-Ellis of California was sentenced to 3 years’ probation & ordered to pay $4.55million in restitution, criminal forfeiture in the form of a money judgment inthe amount of $964,442 & a fine of $1,000. Diversified Ingredients ofMissouri was sentenced to 3 years’ probation & ordered to pay $1.5 millionin restitution, criminal forfeiture in the form of a money judgement in theamount of $75,000 & a fine of $2,000. The court heard that the pet foodingredients were shipped from a Wilbur-Ellis facility in Rosser, Texas – specifi-cally chicken meal & turkey meal & were adulterated & misbranded with theuse of cheaper substitute ingredients such as feather meal & feed-grade chick-en bone byproduct meal & omitted premium ingredients such as turkey mealfrom products identified as turkey meal.

ALDF SUING ROADSIDE ZOOS

The Animal Legal Defense Fund, (aldf.org) a legal advocacy organization for animals, works through thecourt system, by public pressure, to advocate against animal suffering. Whether it be substandard roadside

zoos, the dairy & farming industry, marine life, greyhound racing, hunting & trapping, free webinars onincorporating animal law into your existing courses, & so

much more. According to their Executive Director,Stephen Wells, all their clients are innocent. Below aretwo recent press releases where court intervention is needed for animals subsisting in squalid conditions.

IOWAThe Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) has filed a suit against CricketHollow Zoo for keeping animals in inhumane & illegal conditions. Afterseveral legal challenges by the ALDF, the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture revokedCricket Hollow Zoo’s exhibitor license & issued a $10,000 penalty whichthe Zoo has appealed. More than200 animals remain at the facility.According to ALDF: “CricketHollow Zoo consistently fails toabide by the state’s animal neglectstandard as documented in dozensof USDA inspection reports. Thelawsuit seeks to rehome the ani-mals to sanctuaries & permanentlyenjoin Cricket Hollow Zoo’s ownersfrom confining animals in inhu-mane & unsafe conditions. In April2018, the U.S. Court of Appealsfor the 8th Circuit affirmed thatthe zoo’s grossly inadequate careof endangered animals violatedthe Endangered Species Act.

Last February a damaged section of fence, about 6 feet wide, acted as asecondary containment for 3 coyotes & a single camel. The damagedfence could potentially allow unauthorized persons or wild animals to

enter the facility.

One of the tigers suffers from lameness in the back legs, likely the result ofinadequate flooring & an inadequate water feature in which to swim.

NEWSFurther to the article con-cerning the litter pancontroversy at the AHSNewark facility when wewere advised to no longeruse plastic litter pans. The""pop up" throwawayboxes needed to be fold-ed and stacked, so it is acost saving measure touse cardboard boxes fromproduce, canned goods, etc.

AHS must now face a daunting task. At a past health inspection, wewere advised by the DHSS (Department of Health and SeniorServices) to remove all automatic waterers from the Newark dogkennels. The reason given was that it is hard to keep disease-freewhen dogs are drinking from it; their saliva will contaminate thegrating. This is a baseless, unsubstantiated request which wasunreasonable given the 100+ kennels that needed to have themremoved. But AHS fulfilled that request, which was unfair to the100+ dogs who will be unable to drink at will, but must be givena great deal of attention to ensure they always have ample drinkingwater, not to mention the intensive labor by staff and the ultimatecost. It is an added expense of time, space and money.

We have discussed this unreasonable demand and although weaccepted their original request, we have re-visited this situation andhave decided that it is unfair to the canine residents. Therefore, we are going to attempt to raise funds to cover the cost-ly expense of reinstalling automatic waterers for the 100+ kennels.

In our opinion, this has been a flagrant abuse of power.

Thanks to Irvington Animal Control Officer Alex Kelly,he was notified of the problem & immediately went to the scene. The older female had been left in the apartment with no food or waterfor several weeks. It is lucky that this lass was discovered as it wouldn'ttake too long for her body's condition and organs start shutting down. Her skin and fur were signs of the lack of care, food & dehydration thatresulted in the pathetic dog's condition.Alex brought her to the AHS Newark facility and "Ella" was immediatelybrought into the Medical Dept. where she is receiving excellent care.If you are wondering why so many landlords do not allow pets, the pic-ture of this apartment is a sad testament to the way many tenant dogowners leave an apartment. The AHS was called at 3 a.m. by a Newark tenant who decid-ed to get rid of two dogs that she kept in the basement ofher apartment. ACO Louise Ward answered the call andascertained that the dog owner had called Newark AnimalControl two weeks prior but when they mentioned a mone-tary charge, she changed her mind.During the time that these two dogs lived in the darkenedbasement, they were deprived of sunlight, food, a humantouch. Our ACO determined that a teen-ager who lives downthe block noticed that the dogs were suffering. This younganimal lover fed them scraps through a low open window. The only intervention these dogs had was from the kindnessof a kid who cared. According to our ACO: "Meanwhile, upstairs three different households stood by as the dogswithered of starvation for two months".Sadly, Carolina and Carl are just the latest in a very long lineof helpless dogs that havebeen emotionally trauma-tized by the thoughtless, irresponsible people whono longer wanted them. The AHS Newark AnimalCare Center has been therefor over 110 years and ourstewardship is to keep ourdoors open and take inthese unwanted animals. We are not there to judge

the people who turn them in. If you are aware of a needy animal --especially those tied outside -- call us. Winter is fast approaching &The Farmers Almanac predicts a bone-chilling winter.Carolina & Carl are at the AHS waiting for "a new leash on life" andhoping to find a loving owner -- something they weren't fortunate tohave in the past. For more information, call AHS at 973-824-7080 ore-mail [email protected] Carolina is File 34638 and Carlis 34637. All have had their inoculations, heartworm test, dewormed, etc. Now all they need is you.

USED AS BAIT DOG & THEN ABANDONED TO DIE

STORIESCOVER

Continued from Page 1

He's an adorable dog ... sweet, affectionate, friendly, relaxed, approachable, outgo-ing -- a perfect bait dog.

The male dog is about 2 years old & may have been given up by someone whothought he’d be going "free to a good home".

The person who oversaw the future of this dog left him huddled in an alcove of aNewark bank, bleeding and left to die as he would not likely have been discoveredfor hours. It was late at night when an officer of the Newark Police Dept. spotted thedog and called the AHS in Newark. ACO Louise Ward was dispatched to the scene.and found "Vern" riddled with so many bite wounds, he could not stand. When sheapproached him, the heartbreaking scene showed a dog who welcomed someone toassist him and wagged his tail.

CAROLINA & CARL – BANISHEDTO BASEMENT

Above, Carolina. Only a young boy down the street saw the suffering & fed them scrapsthrough a low open window.

Carl shared the same home with Carolinauntil the owner no longer wanted us &banished us to the apartment dweller’sbasement.

Photo left: Huddled in a bank alcove; hecould barely move with so many bitemarks. Above: The back of the neck withwounds & stitches.

Due to the numerous bitewounds and need for care, the ACO brought him tothe Emergency ReferralService (AERA) in Fairfieldwhere he was given emer-gency veterinary services.Shortly thereafter, Vernwas brought to our TintonFalls shelter where he willcontinue to be treated andthen placed for adoption.

We would caution dog own-ers who need to give uptheir pet – this is a warning. There are people who wantdogs and cats to be used asbait to train their pit bullsfor fighting. Vern’s was theultimate betrayal of a dogwho had once been a loyalcompanion.

For more information on Vern, call 732-922-0100 or e-mail: [email protected] and refer to File 34720.

Vern is a sweet dog … forgiving of allof the cruelties that were perpetratedon him.

This panoramic view gives an idea of the size of the enclosure. It is roughly 40’ x40’, although irregulr in shape. It includes a two-tiered large resting area, plus small-er resting areas and benches, plus two rope bridges for climbing.

Our four happy fellas out enjoying the day with plenty of space to run, climb, and playwith one another.

Pictured are Gandalf and Aragorn. To help them adapt to the new and significantly larg-er space, sunflower seeds were sprinkled throughout the yard, providing an activity thatkept their attention. All four baboon boys - including Frodo and Legolas - are availablefor sponsorship with the coupon on the opposite page or online at ahscares.org.

Helping More Animals at Popcorn Park ...It’s Possible with Help from You! Popcorn Park is a refuge ... a sanctuary ... in which we

provide care for the lifetime of our residents. We areproud to provide the very best for them in every way. Most recently, we have provided a very spacious newarea for our baboons, aviaries to provide more enrich-ment for our larger domestic birds, and a small medicaldepartment to provide in-house surgeries and treat-ment when needed for all. Each has a cost, of course, and we’re hoping that, in the holiday spirit, you will givethe gift of health and happiness to our residents.

As you may know, our four boys came to us when their ownercould no longer care for them in late 2016. While they had anadequate space, we knew they would thrive with something moresizable. We recently completed their transition into a very spaciousarea about 40’ x 40’ which is furnished with resting areas, ropebridges, and numerous benches to rest and eat, plus toys. Indoorsthey have a 12’ x 9’ area with cubbies and resting benches. As the baboons are extremely curious and do test their surroundings, the cyclone fencing extends 12’ high all around the enclosure andcovers the top as well. Fencing is also buried 8” underground andmet with a cement barrier, all designed to prevent this clever four-some from escaping. Their transition to the new space was gradual and took about 5weeks. The move required sedation, at which time they all got gen-eral health and dental check-ups, bloodwork, etc. They were movedin “buddy” pairs - Gandalf and Aragorn, and Frodo and Legolas - sothey felt most comfortable when they woke up in their new indoorenclosure. They were given time to acclimate by first being in asmaller, secure area with benches, where they could see their newsurroundings. For the first time, they could smell and hear the bigcats nearby, so although they are completely safe, it was importantthat they feel so. When they were ready to explore their big space, they found a daily sprinkling of sunflower seeds throughout theenclosure - something to keep them a little distracted and calm whenintroduced to something so new.In, short, they adapted quite quickly and are really enjoying everyaspect of it. Staff has also clicker-trained the four boys to come in fortheir meal at the end of the day, and they are very responsive to theclicker. The construction and move has taken a little time, but it’sclearly worth it to see our four baboons so enjoying themselves. The cost of their new enclosure is $34,000. We hope you appreciateall we do to enrich our animals’ lives and to make them happy, healthy, and safe. If you are filled with the holiday spirit, pleasemake a donation to help with the cost of this new enclosure. Justmake note that it’s for the baboons, and thank you.

Three new mini-aviaries were purchased for our larger birds. It’s a win-win situation forboth the birds and visitors to the park who rarely see our larger domestic birds. The birdslove being outside enjoying fresh air and people-watching. Until now, staff would movethe birds’ very spacious cages to the barn’s garage door opening to enjoy fresh air andsunlight. But space is limited and we’d have to keep swithcing the birds. Now, from Mayto October, temperatures permitting, some of the birds can be out in the refuge and oth-ers in the barn with rotations. The aviaries are behind a split-rail fence, which is 2’ awayfrom a chain link fence for visitors, so no one has direct access to the birds. The trio ofaviaries cost $8,000, but will provide a rich environment for our larger and highly intelli-gent birds. Might you take them under your wing and help support this purchase?

Pictured is Jocko, one of the birds who will enjoy stretch-ing out his wings in the aviaries. Also ready to try themout are Bonnie, DooWop, and Felix the macaws and Bill,a double yellow-head Amazon.

The new medical area has a sizable table which will accommodate largeranimals like bears and the big cats, and includes all that’s needed to

perform a wide array of surgeries “in-house”, saving the costs of specialists and eliminating the stress of transport for the animals.

To provide better and more responsive animal care for the animals resid-ing in Popcorn Park, a small medical department was constructed withinour spacious barn. Although animals could often be taken inside to the

veterinary department where cats and dogs are treated, it could present aproblem. The larger animals such as tigers and bears are too large for the

smaller tables. In addition, the shelterr surgery suites are always verybusy with cat and dog surgeries. The new medical area provides for

immediate treatment and has all that is required for basic surgery as wellas routine care. It also has the money-saving advantage in some cases ofallowing for an animal to be treated in-house rather than be sent to asurgical specialist. Popcorn Park is deeply grateful to the Ocean CountyDept. of Corrections Work Crew Unit who designed and constructed theentire medical/surgery room - thank you. The materials cost for the newmedical area was approximately $3,000. If you would like to help defraythe costs of the materials for our new medical/surgical suite, it would be

greatly appreciated.

The young lad has lots of puppyenergy and is playful & bouncy with the other dogs. Ifyou want to come and meet him, just ask for Tanner. He’s been watching as people walk through the kennels… .but they just walk on by. File 32113-M.

Four months have come & gone …. but I have beenhaving a ball while at the shelter! I would love tohave a full-time companion who will take me home.We can make lots of happy hours and wonderfulmemories. If you want to meet me, just ask forScrappy Doo! File 32129-F.

Wow – we found a dog as a stray …. & heis microchipped! Although he was found inEssex County, the information traced to anindividual in Hudson County. A call wasmade & they advise they do not own a dog.Another homeless heartbreaker who needsa visit by Santa! File 35065-M.

If you are looking for a young, exuberant companionto share your life, come and meet Burt. He is stillenjoying life and the pleasures of toys & tug of war.He willingly shares his food, his toys … and yes, hisheart. File 32148-M.

A beautiful Labrador Retriever was neverreunited with her owner. Did she run away? Was she stolen? Did someone give her “freeto a good home”. For a few years, we havebeen getting purebred dogs that were neverclaimed. If you have a dog, keep him close toyour home & heart. Invisible fencing does notstop pet theft. File 34853-F.

Sad & lonely is what is reflected in thoseeyes …. & her heart is broken. The sweet

young lass was found as a stray without anyclues as to who she is or where she

belonged. We hope you will keep her inyour thoughts & prayers for this upcoming

holiday. She deserves to join in the fun-loving spirit. File 34873-F.

We are absolutely thrilled toreport that our pal Joey has finallyfound himself a wonderful home!It took just one week shy of a year, but we think it was worth the wait, and Joey would surely agree. He came to us in June, 2017 as astray. We located his owners whosaid they would be right in fortheir, "best friend", but they nevercame. As fabulous, friendly, andlovable as Joey was, nothing everseemed to work out for him as faras homes went. But it finally hap-pened -- below is an excerpt fromthe update from his new mom anddad.

"Just want to thank you guys forJoey. We love him so muchalready. He is adjusting well andloves his new home ... We havenot found the food thing to be anissue, just some little adjustments, like installing child proof latcheson cabinet where trash can is.(Joey mastered opening it withinan hour of being here, prettysmart dog). We also found that

Joey CAN reach the island in the kitchen, so no food left there, (only lost a half ofbagel). He has great manners when we eat our dinner, just lays down and waitsfor us to finish ... House breaking is coming along. We walk Joey every two hoursand, so far today, we have been "accident" free ... Joey is bringing us so much joyand laughter ... Not sure why Joey took so long to find a forever home but we arethrilled he was available for us ...Please pass this on to all of those who workedwith Joey and thank them for taking such good care of our little guy. Let themknow he will be loved and cherished for the rest of his life."12 HUMANE NEWS Holiday 2018

William & Dianne Priest of Rio Grande, NJ takeJoey into their heart & home – after he waiteda year for happiness.

She was just a pup when she was found as a stray in NewBrunswick. The 6-month-old Shepherd/Plott Hound mixturewas never claimed. She was called Laney & thanks to ourvolunteer, Sherri Powell Laraway, she recommended thehomeless pup to her friend. Kerri Bergested & daughtervisited the facility and it was match made in Heaven! Congratulations Laney on your new forever home -- weknow you’re a lucky girl!

We just can't imagine how littleMosey ever became a neglectedstray on the streets of Newarkback in the spring. This sweet little girl surely was not the typeto wander off or ever leave yourside for that matter, so it's morelikely that poor Mosey was justdumped and tied in front of theAHS Newark Shelter. She had avery bad dental disease conditionwhich necessitated some teethextractions. She was matted, dirty, and overgrown, and the groomerin AHS Newark did a wonderful

job at making little Mosey beautiful again before sending her down to us atAHS/Popcorn Park. Of course, Mosey was always beautiful on the inside, which is why we all fell in love with the easygoing, lovable lady immediately.Mosey spent some time getting healthy and strong and when she got herclean bill of health, she was discovered by Scott & Catherine Wieczorek &family of Toms River. This wonderful family fell in love with her too. Moseyfinally has the great home that she deserves! Congratulations Mosey and family, and best wishes for a long and happy life together!

Scott & Catherine Wieczorek & their family welcomed aspiffy, well-groomed lass who originally arrived as a dirty, matted mess who had been tied at our front door.

What an incredibly happy new life forlittle Jackson! If you remember,Jackson came to us long, long ago. Itwas right after Hurricane Sandy, andJackson was found abandoned in astorm-damaged home. The little guycame trotting in as if nothing waswrong, squeaking his toy happily in hismouth, and eager to see what hisfuture held. Young Jackson got adopt-ed quickly but sadly, he was returnedsix years later. He was quite sad to be

back at first but eventually, he got that toy right back in his mouth and once again, began looking forward to what was in store for him next.Jackson probably couldn't have dreamed up a better home than the one he finally got!Alison and Joe Gamache of Portland, Maine saw Jackson online, read his story, and feltsuch a connection to our little pal. They came here all the way from Portland to meethim and sure enough, they all hit it off immediately. They visited with Jackson a fewtimes then finally, Jackson took the long road trip to his new home. He settled in almostimmediately and is absolutely loving life in Maine, enjoying the water and going onnew adventures every day. We can't thank his new family enough for giving Jackson achance, and putting the smile back on his face and the wag back in his tail.

A short time ago, theAHS received a requestfrom Bill Berloni, wellknown since he rescuedSandy of “Annie” fame, &heads up the WilliamBerloni TheatricalAnimals in New YorkCity. Bill was contactedby Charlotte St. Martin,President of TheBroadway League, whowas ready to adopt a res-cue dog. Visiting an ani-mal shelter with hun-dreds of dogs waiting forlove can be a soul-sear-ing experience. She had

thought about a female golden retriever, a standard poodle or goldendoodle AND a dog that got along with cats. After Charlotte gave herwish list …. well – we didn’t have one of the breeds – but we did havean adorable dog that needed a home. Charlotte contacted us after theadoption; “I got an 8 lb. boy poodle. And I couldn’t love him more if Itried. This is one sweet boy”. Our thanks for keeping an open mind …and an open heart and Lucky found a great home …. and 2 cats toshare their love! www.ahscares.org 13

This little guy was found in someone’s backyardand he was having a bit of difficulty moving hisfront legs. He was brought to Popcorn Park &looked similar to our native box turtle. He has

been identified as a red-footed tortoise that origi-nates in South America. They are popular as petsand this one most likely escaped from its owner.Looks like he had a tough time of being on hisown as his front legs were both scraped, almostraw; scales were missing and so were toes on

both feet. When tortoises are attacked they pulltheir head in and their heavily scaled forearms

protect their vital body parts. It looks like a pred-ator did attack him and tried to open him up. He

survived but did sustain wounds that neededattention.

He’s doing good and healing well, he’s a greateater, eating almost everything you put in front of him. He loves his fruits

,veggies and salads, especially yellow squash. He is getting around using hisfront legs now without any problems. This little fella will stay at Popcorn Park

as red-footed tortoises are exotics & cannot be released.

The AHS Tinton Falls facil-ity recently received a

frantic phone call from aColts Neck resident whosaw a young deer that

had become entangled inthe soccer net in their

yard. ACO Luis Mercadowas immediately dis-

patched to the scene. Thedeer was enmeshed in the

net & was carrying thePVC poles around the

yard. Luis got him loose& he immediately jumpedup -- still half tied withthe strings & bounced off the police car & fell again. Luis was finallyable to free him …. but he never got up. The wild and uncontrolledactivity caused the young buck to either have a heart attack or the

attempts to help were too traumatic for the young animal and he died.Sadly, the injury and death of animals that become trapped in suchnetting is all too frequent. We urge homeowners, schools, and any

oudoor sports facilities to please be aware of the dangers of netting towildlife, and if at all possible, to move or store it in a safe place

where it does not endanger animals.

AHS/Popcorn Park Helping Wildlife in NeedWhen people … even youngsters … find a turtle or reptile & decide to keep &care for it, rarely do they keep these animals for their life, nor do they surrenderit to a responsible & knowledgeable group. Very often they release them outside… or in the woods … & assume they will survive. The animals are exposed to the

elements, and many other dangers, and likely will not survive.

RED-FOOTED TORTOISE RESCUED AND TREATED FOR INJURIES

NETTING POSES SERIOUS ENTANGLEMENTSTO WILDLIFE

The damage to the tortoises’s forelegs isclear, and required medical attention.

Sadly, efforts were made to free him but itwas uncontrolled activity & he succumbed to

the trauma.

Despite his injuries, he had a great appetite, hereenjying some salad and fruit, which helped in hisrecovery.

AHS Animal Control Officer Luis Mercado attempted to cover the deer’shead to quell his anxiety.

Cautionary news articles have appeared recently &now a bill is being introduced – so this is a situa-tion that is probably ongoing and so be aware!

Assembly Bill 4552 (Mukherji) makes leasing dogs& cats a violation of the consumer fraud law. NJ

residents are sometimes deceived into signing a lease for a pet & end uppaying more than intended. The bill prohibits contracts in which the trans-

fer of ownership of a cat/dog is contingent on the making of paymentsover a period of time subsequent to the transfer of possession of the

cat/dog unless those payments are on an unsecured loan for the purchaseof the animal. It also prohibits lease agreements that provide for or offerthe option of transferring ownership of the cat/dog at the end of the leaseterm. Violations are punishable by a monetary penalty of up to $10,000

for the first offense and up to $30,000 for any subsequent offense.

A donation as a memorial to a loved one will go a long way to helpSociety orphans. There are many ways to make a donation. The Societywill notify a bereaved family with a card IF A FULL NAME & ADDRESS OFTHE FAMILY AS WELL AS FULL NAME & ADDRESS OF DONOR isincluded. Due to the high volume of requests, only gifts of $50.00 ormore will be printed in a timely manner.

WARNING POSTED AFTER DOG EATS GORILLA GLUE

A Brandon, Mississippi veterinarian posted on the internet to warn pet owners of the dangers of gorilla glue. A Jack Russell Terrier that had cheweda bottle of gorilla glue arrived & had vomited a few times. The ownersfound the chewed-up bottle. Surgery was performed & the glue had basically made a mold of her stomach; the vet had to go in it break it up toget it out. The dog is doing well after surgery but be sure gorilla glue (orany other type of glue) is put away after use.

PENNSYLVANIACecelia Johnson, 64, was the first inMontgomery County to be convicted under anew state law that brings stiffer penalties foranimal abuse or neglect. Johnson let her pit bull Cam, freeze to death inher backyard when the temperature was 15 degrees & the low was -2degrees. The dog was frozen solid & wedged between the fence & itsdoghouse as though it was trying to burrow somewhere to find warmth. An empty food dish & water bowl were also frozen solid. The chaincaused skin necrosis, consistent with freeze burn injury. A vet’s reportconcluded that the cause of death was hypothermia due to prolongedexposure to low ambient temperature & that Cam’s death was non-acci-dental. A contributory cause of death was Cam’s “inadequate body con-dition”. Sentencing has been scheduled for a later date.

IDAHOBlake Fisher, a member of the Fish & Game Commission, is being pres-sured to resign after posting a photo of a family of baboons he killedwhile hunting in Africa. Fischer & wife shot at least 14 animals duringtheir trip to Namibia. The photo shows Fischer smiling with 4 deadbaboons . He killed them using a bow & arrow. They also killed a giraffe, leopard, impala, sable antelope, waterbuck, kudu, warthog, oryx &eland. The governor’s office has launched an investigation. As we go to press, Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter asked for & accepted BlakeFischer’s resignation. Fischer didn’t apologize for killing the baboons butsaid in his resignation letter that he “recently made some poor judgmentsthat resulted in sharing photos of the hunt in which I did not display anappropriate level of sportsmanship & respect for the animals I harvested”.

DELAWAREGov. John Carney signed a bill to allow shelters to house strays beyondthe typical stray hold timeline, supports a sterilization & vaccination pro-gram for the animals, & ensures that animal cruelty laws are appliedequally to cats without a home or owner. Under the new law, the expand-ed definition allows more abandoned cats to be altered & vaccinated atDelaware animal shelters. It eliminates the term “keeper” from the statecode & replaces it with the phrase “free roaming caretaker”.

HAWAIICitizens have formed a non-profit organization called Kupale OOkala totake legal action against Big Island Dairy for violating the federal CleanWater Act by emitting cattle waste into three waterways that run throughthe town & into the ocean. The dairy farm has continued to pollute; ani-mal agriculture is so dangerous to the planet’s health.

CALIFORNIAA new section has been added to the Family Code elevating pet animalsbeyond inanimate property status in divorce proceedings. Assembly Bill2274, upon request from a party in separation or marriage dissolutionproceedings “may assign sole or joint ownership of a pet animal takinginto consideration the care of the pet animal”. The law goes into effectJanuary 1, 2019. The new law follows previously enacted laws in Alaskaand Illinois requiring judges to consider the “well being” of companionanimals in issuing divorce orders.

October issue of theHUMANE NEWSwere the Boxer &

pit mix who had hadbeen tied in 90

degree heat to thesplit rail fence on

heavily traveled, high-speed Shafto Road. They were calm &

somewhat con-cerned that their owner had left them there …. but they would wait until the ownerreturned. Except she never came back to get them. The 7-year-old Bella the Boxer &

4-year-old Penny the pit were brought in to the AHS Tinton Falls shelter. Althoughthere are some interested parties who would like to adopt one, we have a strong

commitment to keeping this pair of pooches together. We are including Bella & Pennyon the Share-A-Pet Program. If you would like to meet them, AHS is open 7 days a

week for your convenience. File 32814-F & File 32815-F (Tinton Falls)

AHS staffers have just commemoratedthe 2nd anniversary of a dog who haswaited 2 years for a happily-ever-aftertale. The AHS was contacted by theSayreville Police Dept. concerning astray dog waiting at headquarters.

That was on Nov. 2, 2016. The 4-5year old lass has been at our TintonFalls shelter since then. In order tokeep her spirits up, Shanice goes on

pack walks, enjoys some playtime withvolunteers …. but it is a hollow diver-

sion when she goes back into the kennels. Shanice is somewhat aloof

until she spends some time with youas she doesn’t want her heart broken

again. To give herself some solitarypleasure, she enjoys snuggling amongthe blankets. After 2 years of waiting,we have placed Shanice on the Share-A-Pet Program. File 16528-F (Tinton Falls).

These gorgeous galsare Cookie andAngel, a pair of 5- year-old GreatDane friends thatare hoping for a fabulous homewhere they can liveout their livestogether with agood family and witheach other. The girlshad a home since

they were little puppies. Sadly, they were given up due to family circumstances changing and their owners moving to different places. Thegirls have never been away from their home, so shelter life was tough onthem at first, but they put the past behind them & hoped for a wonderfulhome. It's been over 5 months .... and still no takers. The pair are outgoing, socialized, & at least they have each other. As a holiday gift for this twosome, we have included them on the Share-A-Pet Program. The gentle giants will enjoy the spacious freedom of theAnimal Haven Farm & would love to meet sponsors who will give themthe support they need. File 28170 & File 28171 (Forked River).

The Share-A-Pet program is a unique program that we established in 1978 as a wayto have you, our compassionate and caring supporter, get closely involved in the life

of an animal in our care. As a Share-A-Pet parent, you can choose to sponsor an ani-mal in need and will receive updates and photos from them three times per year, viaregular mail or email. Most dogs on the program reside in our Animal Haven Farm, a

beautiful and peaceful area, and you can take them for a walk or spend some timewith them. Cats live in either Kitty City or another free-roaming area where they areloved and well cared for, and you can visit them and get up close and purr-sonal with

them, too. Sponsorship of an animal is just a $10.00 monthly donation, which goesdirectly toward the care of your Share-A-Pet. Any funds exceeding the needs of yoursponsored animal will go toward the care of another Share-A-Pet. Sponsorship alsoincludes a membership card and free admission to Popcorn Park Animal Refuge. Youcan view animals available for sponsorship in our Share-A-Pet booklet, or online at
