In this brochure we wish to introduce you to our centre, the“ESCUELA DE IDIOMAS NERJA” (Nerja Language School) and toclearly explain the variety of Spanish courses we offer as well asthe cultural activities and accommodation we are confident will meetyour needs and expectations.

We suggest you come to Nerja, a coastal village with manyattractions, in order to learn our language and culture effectively ina relaxed and friendly atmosphere in natural setting surrounded bymountains and beaches in an area with a year-round subtropicalclimate.

aNerja is located on the Costa del Sol, 50 minutes fromMalaga. It is a village with around 20,000 inhabitants whichhas retained its individual Andalusian character.

Flanked by mountains and with beautiful beaches, it offersthe ideal climate with an average annual temperature of 20ºC.Agriculture, fishing and tourism are the main industries.

Historically, it dates back to Palaeolithic times. Howeverits name originates from Arabic: NARIXA (meaning abundantspring). The open and friendly people, traditions such asCarnival, Holy Week, the fiestas and Patron Saints´ Days andits proximity to major cities (such as Malaga, Granada andSeville) make Nerja the ideal place to study our language andculture.

Nerja’s Prehistoric Caves and the small white villages inthe surrounding area are well worth visiting for their culturalinterest and individual charm.

Being a Mediterranean Coastal Village, all types of watersports are available in addition to tennis, swimming, horse-riding and hiking, all of which can be organised around ourintensive courses.

You can also make the most of your free time by visitingthe local bars and restaurants which serve typical regionaldishes, as well as enjoying our traditional art: Flamenco.

Nerja has high quality service and catering facilities andoffers an excellent atmosphere to all those who come to visit.

ñThe Nerja Language School is located in the centreof the village, in a traditional Andalusian house, witha large tropical garden. It is just a few minutes walkfrom the beautiful nearby beaches and in thesurrounding area you can also find all types ofaccommodation and shops.

Our facilities consist of 12 indoor and outdoorclassrooms (the garden is a wonderful place to havea class) which are all fully equipped as well as abookshop and a cafeteria.

Furthermore, about 3 minutes away from theschool, we have our own Residence where students,in addition to staying in accommodation with all themodern facilities, can also make use of additionalservices such as a library, the Internet and a cafeteria.

Our teachers are graduates in the study ofSpanish language and linguistics and are specialistsin the different programmes we offer, making up awell co-ordinated and enthusiastic team, ready tomake your learning experience as effective as possible

The programmes we offer aim to satisfy the needsof the students both in terms of general aspects ofthe language, as well as more specific aspects suchas administration, trade, business, tourism, Spanishcivilization and culture, literature, Spanish teachingmethodology and official exams.

To enhance the teaching of the language, wecombine our professional experience with the mostup-to-date methods and techniques (tapes, videos,overhead projector materials, new technology andthe Internet), paying particular attention to presentday Spanish (through the use of newspapers, maga-zines, books, photos and other up-to-date materialsin class).

The school was founded in 1980 by its currentdirectors and affiliated to numerous professionalassociations which guarantee the quality of our coursesand services.

The intensive study programme is divided into sixlearning levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2). The coursesconsist of four to six hours of classes per day, andcan last from two to 24 weeks (the length of the coursecan be extended to 32 weeks depending on the specificneeds of the students).

Courses for students with some prior knowledge ofSpanish begin every Monday. Total beginners shouldconsult course start dates.

The student is continually assessed in class and, inaddition, takes a test every two weeks to allow them tofollow their own learning progress.

A tutor from the centre is available to students toanswer any questions or doubts about their studies.

Classes can be held in the mornings or in theafternoons, depending on the plan drawn up by theCentre. A one hour class is equivalent to 50 minutesreal time.

Our courses are designed so that students canundertake an intensive course of study focusing oncommunication skills, without neglecting the necessarystudy of linguistics.

For intensive and fast learning of the language.Caters to the specific needs of the students.For adults over 18 years old.

30 hours of classes per week from Monday toFriday. Course length 1 to 16 weeks. Groups of 4 to 6 students. Morning classes.

Accredited by the Bildungsurlaub (further education for professionals) in Germany

3. “ONE TO ONE” INTENSIVE INDIVIDUAL COURSE

“Made to measure” courses catering to thespecific interests of the student.

For executives, professionals and students whorequire a highly intensive and specialisedprogramme. General Spanish, Spanish for trade,tourism, business, banking, law and medicine orpreparation for specific exams (“A Levels” orothers).

Opportunity to obtain the Diploma de “EspañolComercial” (Diploma of Business Spanish) andto share the programme with a partner.

20 or 30 hours of classes from Monday toFriday. Course length 1 to 12 weeks. Airport pick-up service from Malaga included. Courses begin every Monday.

4. CLUB 50 + COURSE

A two week cultural experience with activitiesincluded.

A programme designed for people with freetime, ready to have a new experience in thesouth of Spain, in Andalusia, and to learn ourlanguage in an enjoyable and encouraging way.

This programme includes a two week packageof activities with a full day trip on the Saturday.

15 hours of classes per week from Mondayto Friday. Course length 2 weeks with three differentlearning levels.

5. BUSINESS OR TOURISM SPANISH COURSES

Courses designed for university students andprofessionals, with an intermediate or advancedlevel of Spanish, who require specific knowledgeof commercial, administrative, tourism or businessSpanish.

Our courses and exams are recognised by theMadrid Chamber of Commerce. We offer thisprogramme on two levels: Basic and Superior.

The Chamber of Commerce Exams are optionaland are held at the school at the end of the course.

Option 1 :30 hours of classes per week from Monday toFriday. Course length 2 weeks. Groups of 4 to8 students. Courses begin on specific dates.

Option 2 :20 hours of classes (Intensive course) + 5 indi-vidual hours (Commercial Course). 2 WeekCourse beginning every Monday.

6. SPANISH LITERATURE COURSE

Designed for book lovers who wish to gain anhistoric perspective on our literature by readingand studying our most important authors andtheir works. Readings and commentaries on thetexts. Extensive Bibliography.

This programme can be supplemented with anintensive Spanish course at the appropriate level.

10 hours of classes per week from Monday toFriday. Course length 2 weeks. Groups of 3 to 5 students. Beginning everyMonday. Required level Intermediate II (B2).Afternoon classes.

7. SPANISH CIVILIZATION COURSE

For students interested in deepening theirknowledge of Spanish history, society, geographyand art. A look at the events and historic andsocial factors that have contributed to thecreation of modern day Spain.

This programme can be supplemented with anintensive Spanish course at the appropriatelevel.

10 hours of classes per week from Monday toFriday. Course Length 2 weeks. Groups of 3to 5 students. Beginning every Monday. Required level Intermediate II (B2). Afternoonclasses.sp

s8. DIPLOMA DE ESPAÑOLCOMO LENGUA EXTRANJERA. D.E.L.E. (DIPLOMA OF SPANISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE)

This is the official exam accredited by theCervantes Institute and the Spanish Ministry ofEducation. The diploma certifies the ability of aperson to use our language on three differentlevels; Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.

Our levels correspond to the D.E.L.E levels asfollows:INTERMEDIATE 2 (B2) = D.E.L.E. Beginner,ADVANCED (C1) = D.E.L.E. Intermediate,SUPERIOR (C2) = D.E.L.E. Advanced.

Our centre will register those students enrolled ina course who wish to take the D.E.L.E exam.Please consult the exam dates. The exams are heldin Malaga in May and November.

Special Preparatory Course for the D.E.L.Eexam: 20 hours of classes per week at theappropriate level (Intensive Course) + 1 privatelesson of one hour per day to prepare forthe exam. Course length 2 to 16 weeks.

9. COURSES FOR SPANISH TEACHERS

This programme aims to bring teachers of Spanish as a Second Language(ELE) up to date on practical aspects of teaching, methodology and,historically speaking, the social life of Spain.

Specific grammar, study and analysis of current methods, types ofclasses, use of different materials in class, student classification andevaluation, customs, history, art, literature, sociology and Spanishpolitics. Extensive bibliography. Individual assessment. Minimumrequired level Advanced (C1).

Option 1 :30 hours of classes per week from Monday to Friday. Course length 1 week. Specific start dates. Groups of 4 to 8 students.

Option 2 :20 hours of classes (Intensive Course) + 5 individual hours (TeachersCourse). Course length 1 week. Beginning every Monday.

10. SPANISH COURSES+ UNIVERSITY STUDIESSpanish in Spain – OPEN UNIVERSITY offersstudents from all over the world the opportunityto learn our language and culture and to followuniversity courses along with Spanish students.Explore two Spanish regions full of beauty,history and ancient traditions.

Programme in Nerja Language SchoolThe objective of this course is to enable thestudents to gain a sufficient command of theSpanish language and culture in order to studyat a university in Spain. The length of the stayin Nerja depends on the student’s level. Theprogramme consists of 4 hours per day, withcourse lengths of 4 to 32 weeks. Students mustattain an advanced level (C1) of Spanish.

Programme in the University of Castile and La Mancha (Toledo)Study of various subjects in the fields ofHumanities, Business Administration and Ma-nagement, Law and Sports Science. Choose fromover 40 classes. A maximum of 24 credits mustbe obtained. Course length is 1 to 2 semesters.

TOLEDO CASTILE - LA MANCHAToledo is the capital of the region of Castileand La Mancha. Located 68 kilometres fromMadrid it is just 45 minutes away. Toledoretains its medieval character. Over the courseof time the Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, Jews andChristians have all left their mark on thelayout, culture and sole of this very beautifulcity.

11. COURSES FOR JUNIORGROUPS - MINI STAYS

Spanish language and civilization courses.A 1 or 2 week cultural experience includingactivities and a pick-up and drop-off servicefrom Malaga Airport.

For groups of young people between 12 and 18years old. 15 to 20 hours of classes per week.Beginning every Monday. Enquire about prices.

12. EXTENSIVE SPANISH COURSES

Gain a deeper understanding of our customsand culture, speak Spanish in the market, inshops, in the bank or in restaurants, with friendsor even with the plumber... all in Spanish!

Aimed at people who are living in Spain for atleast a month and who wish to improve theirSpanish, in everyday situations.

Two days per week 90 minutes/day, afternoonclasses. From total beginner to advanced level.

All of our intensive courses include:A presentation about the course and activities.Classification interview and exam, assessment,certificates and diplomas, seminars, workshopsand parties organised by the School.

BEGINNER (A1) Aimed at students who have never studied Spanish before orwho have a limited knowledge of Spanish.

Upon completion of this level, students will be able tounderstand and use common expressions, allowing them toprovide and ask for basic information about themselves and thepeople they know, and to communicate with other people whospeak in a simple manner. 2 weeks, 40 hours.

ELEMENTARY (A2) Aimed at students who already possess a degree of knowledgeof the language. Completion of this level will allow them to copein everyday practical situations in Spanish-speaking countrieswith simple information exchanges on familiar or general topics,whilst beginning to learn about Spanish customs.

The student will also learn how to describe informationabout their past and questions relating to their immediate needsin simple terms. 2 weeks, 40 hours.

INTERMEDIATE 1 (B1) On completing this level, students will be able to understandand produce texts containing information about general topics,to relate past experiences, to talk about future situations andacts, to explain their plans and express wishes and opinions. Theywill learn how to cope in a Spanish speaking country and dealwith situations that present themselves when travelling andexperiencing a new culture. 4 weeks, 80 hours.

INTERMEDIATE 2 (B2) The aim of this level is to develop the student’s ability to makevalue judgements, express their wishes, make hypotheses, stateopinions and also to transmit messages: also to attain a deeperunderstanding of certain aspects of our culture and language,allowing them to participate in conversations about these topics,defending a point of view with a sufficient level of fluencyand naturalness, even with native speakers. 4 weeks, 80 hours.

ADVANCED (C1) At this level, the aim is to build on the student’s prior knowledge,to develop a flexible and effective use of the language for social,academic and professional purposes, to be able to understanddemanding texts and to produce substantially complex textsthemselves.

As a communicator, the student will be able to usecolloquialisms and adapt to the particular style of each situation,knowing how to use indicative/subjunctive tenses in order toclarify what they are saying. 4 weeks, 80 hours.

SUPERIOR (C2) The study of Hispanic civilization and culture becomes the mainfocus of the tasks to practise the students’ language skills andto develop the understanding of language as a way of expressinga certain socio-cultural reality. We progress to text-based andcontextual teaching, placing special emphasis on developing acommunicative support and fluency, as well as exploring theintricacies of the linguistic system. 8 weeks, 160 hours.

On the first day of the course, students will take a written and oraltest before being assigned to a level, group and time.

Normally, we offer courses on all levels, but that could mean theremay only be one student in a particular level at times. Where this is thecase, we offer them a reduced number of private hours.

Our residence with 30 rooms, built in Arabic-Andalusian style, is located in the centre of the village,only a few minutes walk from the School and beach.It is a recently built, four-storey building with terracesand an Andalusian patio.

Fully-equipped single or double rooms, with ensuitebathroom. “Star rooms” with bathroom, TV, fridge,coffee facilities. There is a laundry service, with aweekly change of sheets and towels and a sharedkitchen for resident students.

The classrooms are comfortable and nicely decoratedwith audio and video equipment.

ñStudent Lounge: a meeting place and activity areaavailable for use by students at the School. Studentscan check their e-mail, do their homework, borrow abook, work with recordings and videos, get help froma tutor, or even relax with a drink.

SHARED FLATS

Very comfortable flats near the School and the beaches.Recommended for independent people over 18 years old.Maximum of 4 students per flat. Each student hastheir own room, with shared communal spaces (fully-equipped kitchen, lounge with TV and bathroom).Towels, sheets and bedding are provided. No laundryor clearing service.

The student, teacher or agent who chooses the Nerja School of Languages canbe sure that it has passed all independent, objective and professionalinspections.

From the Pablo Picasso International Airport inMalaga to Nerja:

Buses run from the airport to the centre of Malaga(Central Bus Station) every 20 minutes. From there, abus leaves for Nerja approximately every hour (the triptakes just over an hour).

Pick-up Service organised by the School: from Malagaairport to your accommodation.

INSURANCE

The School has Insurance of Civic Responsibilitywhich covers its students and facilities.Spanish Social Security offers medical attention to EUcitizens in possession of the relevant documentationobtained in their own country.Students from countries outside the EU shouldconsult an insurance company regarding Spanish SocialSecurity, if they wish to visit our country.We recommend you take out travel insurance in theunlikely event that you should need medical assistance.Our centre offers travel and cancellation insurance inthe event of illness.
