Surface Preparation
All surface should be dry and free from contamination such as
oil, grease, loose particles, decayed matter, moss, algae growth,
laitance, and all traces of mould release oils and curing com-
pounds. Where moss, algae or similar growths have occurred,
treatment with a proprietary biocide should be carried out.
Note : It is not necessary to remove Fosroc’s Nitobond AR
curing membrane prior to the application of Nitocote Wall
Guard provided the adhesion to the substrate is excellent.
Where application over existing sound coatings is required,
trials should be conducted to ensure compatibility and re-
tention of the bond between the underlying coating and the
substrate. For further advice, consult Fosroc. It is essential to
produce an unbroken coating of Nitocote Wall Guard. To
ensure this is achieved, surfaces containing blow holes or
similar areas of pitting should first be filled using a suitable
cementitious fairing coat like Renderoc FC or Acrylic fairing
coat like Nitocote Putty ( for further details, refer to Fosroc).
The cementitious fairing coat should be allowed to cure for

Instructions for use
Preparation All surfaces which are to receive the coating, must be
free from oil, laitence, grease, wax, dirt or any other form of
foreign matter which could affect adhesion. Typically, concrete
surfaces can be cleaned using high pressure water jet or grit
blasting. Spalled surfaces or those containing large
blowholes, cracks and other such defects up to 10 mm depth,
should be repaired using Nitocote CM210. For further advice
on suitable repair mortars for larger scale repairs, contact the
local Fosroc office.
Mixing The liquid polymer (5 kg) is poured from the plastic container
into a plastic or metal drum having a volume of at least
20 litres. To this, the powder is gradually added (18 kg)
whilst mixing with an approved spiral paddle attachment on
a slow speed drill. Mixing is continued until a lump free
slurry is obtained. This should take a minimum of 3
minutes and a maximum of 5 minutes.
Application Pre-dampen the substrate surface with water . High porosity
substrates will require more dampening than dense
substrates. Any condensation should be removed using a
sponge. Any running water should be stopped with Renderoc
Plug. Contact the local Fosroc office for further advice on other
suitable water stopping materials.
When the concrete surface is damp, apply the material using
a trowel The first coat should be applied at a minimum wet
film thickness of 1 mm (approximate coverage is 1.9 kg/m2)
and should be well brushed into the surface.
Finish in one direction for a neat appearance. Application
may also be made by roller, however it is recommended to
finish the surface with a trowel for best results.
The first coat should be allowed to cure for a minimum of 5
hours at 20°C or 3 hours at 35°C and longer at
lower temperatures. The material should not be
applied at temperatures below 5°C. All the mixed
material should be used within 2 hours at 20°C or 1 hour at
35°C.
The second coat should also be applied at a
minimum wet film thickness of 1 mm and finished in one
direction. Pre-dampening of the surface is not necessary
when applying the second coat.
Fosroc Nitocote CM210
Spray application
For spray application the substrate should be
prepared in the same manner as for trowel
application and the material should again be
applied in two coats. Each coat should be a
minimum of 1 mm thickness. Allow a minimum of 5
hours cure at 20°C or 3 hours at 35°C between the
first and second coats, or longer at lower
temperatures. For further details on the selection
of spraying machines and nozzles consult the local
Fosroc office.
Disposal
Waste mixed material should be allowed to harden
overnight then disposed of as non-hazardous
waste.
Cleaning
Immediately after application is completed clean all
tools and equipment with clean water.
Hardened material can be removed by
mechanical means and by use of Fosroc Solvent
102.
Limitations
- Nitocote CM210 should not be applied if the air
or substrate temperature is greater than 45°C.
This may result in different colour shades.
- Do not proceed with application when rainfall
is imminent unless in a sheltered or
protected location. The product should not be
exposed to moving water during application.
- Nitocote CM210 should not be used on
external surfaces where aesthetic
appearance is critical as differences in
cure/drying rate may cause slight colour
differences in the final surface.
- Nitocote CM210 should not be used for
applications subject to direct contact of tidal
marine conditions eg. sea wall defences, sea
water inlet channels.
- If any doubts arise concerning temperature
or substrate conditions, consult the local

constructive solutions page 2 of 4
Nitoproof 600
Concrete surfaces should have a light steel-trowel followedby a fine hair-broom or equivalent finish which is dry and freeof dust, oil and other contaminants. All high spots should beremoved.
Moss and lichen must be removed physically followed bytreatment with fungicidal wash to kill any spores and inhibitfurther growth. After treatment wash down thoroughly withclean water and allow to dry.
All metal surfaces should be made clean of paint, oils, rustand other contaminants. Abrade to expose bright metal thenwipe clean with Nitoflor Sol prior to priming.
Priming
Priming is not normally required on good quality concretesubstrates. However, absorbent surfaces such as porousconcrete, sand/cement and cement boards will require sealingto prevent absorption of Nitoproof 600. This should be doneusing a 1:1 mixture of Nitoproof 600 and Nitoflor Sol. All metaland PVC surfaces should be cleaned and abraded beforepriming.
Movement joints
All expansion and movement joints should be sealed withappropriate sealant. When cured, a Debonding Tape shouldbe applied to the top surface of the sealant and the joint thenovercoated with a 1.3mm thick application of Nitoproof 600extending 150mm each side of the tape. Embed a 100mm or150mm wide strip of Nitoproof Scrim*†, then allow to curebefore general application.
Cracks
All shrinkage and non-moving structural cracks should bepretreated with not less than a 1.3mm coating of Nitoproof600 extending 75mm either side of the crack. Allow to cureovernight before general application.
Right angle bends
All right angle bends must have a cant strip or coving detailinstalled. This may be formed in either sand & cement orPlastijoint*† and it must be bedded into a layer of Nitoproof 600,then given a reinforcing pretreatment by application of a 1.3mmthick coat extending 150mm either side of the coving. Whilst
still wet, a 150mm wide strip of Nitoproof Scrim is embeddedinto the Nitoproof 600 as reinforcement (ensure thoroughwetting).
All other angles, joints, protrusions and stress points shouldbe pretreated with a heavy application of Nitoproof 600extending 50-100mm either side of the detail. Reinforcementwith Nitoproof Scrim is recommended where movement ispossible.
Allow pretreatments to cure overnight before generalapplication.
Application
Nitoproof 600 should be applied by brush, trowel, squeegeeor airless spray (two coat application for standard grade onvertical surfaces) at a minimum wet film thickness of 1.3mm(1.3 litre/m2). This is in addition to the preparatory work.
The minimum application life (after opening the pack) is up to48 hours if stored in closed containers.
On a vertical surface a film build of 1.3mm is achievable intwo coats. In critical applications where surety of filmthickness is paramount, two coats should be applied at rightangles to one another. Quantities per coat should be gaugedto give the specified final film thickness.
A short haired synthetic pile roller should be used if applyingby roller. For spray application, use a Graco King type pumpwith 60:1 ratio at pressure 5.5 bar (80 psi), hose diameter13mm with a 10mm wip end. Tip size: 0.58mm - 0.84 (23-33thou).
If a water test is to be run, the membrane should be fullycured.
Flood test
Prior to placement of protection, flood to a minimum depth of50mm of water for 24 hours. Drains shall be plugged andbarriers placed to contain the water.
Curing and protection
page 3 of 4constructive solutions
Nitoproof 600
Nitoproof 600 membrane must be cured for a minimum of 24hours @ 25°C before placing protection. Where damage tothe membrane is possible (by traffic, backfilling, etc) it shouldbe protected by a cementitious screed or protection boards.A dust coat of cement should be used to prevent adhesion ofthe membrane to the boards. Where a bond with the toppingis not required, a separator sheet should be used.
To prevent damage to the membrane it is recommended thatNitoproof 600 is laid in strips of 1 metre width to permit theapplication of a screed or Protection Board from the uncoatedarea.
All exposed areas of Nitoproof 600 should be coated withNitoproof Reflectacoat*† to ensure maximum resistance toultraviolet radiation.
Cleaning
Tools and equipment should be cleaned with Nitoflor Solimmediately after use. Do not use the solvent for thinningexcept where a sealing coat is required.
Limitations
- Application should not commence if the temperature ofthe substrate is below 5°C.

Supercast PredimaxInjection Hose*
Assembly
The Supercast Predimax Injection hose systems consistsof a suitable length of hose plus inlet and outlet vents (SeeProperties). These vents allow for injection and each vent isof a different colour (White/Red) for ease of identification. The length of these vents are between 400-700mm longand will be identified as per project requirements. The inletand outlet vents are normally housed in a socket box orconnected by formwork catchers. These boxes or catchersshall be placed in an accessible area to allow ease ofinjection.
Overlapping of injection hose length shall be approximately100-150mm ith subsequent hoses placed between 50-80mm of each other.
Supercast predimax injection Hose shall be placed in themiddle of the wall. Where walls are wider than 600mm, thehose shall be placed at a maximum 250mm from the waterside. In all cases ensure that the hoses are embedded at aminimum distance of 50mm in concrete.
Fixing
Fix the injection and vent hoses to the substrate with hoseclips and accessories as supplied by Fosroc. Fixing shallbe at 200-250mm centre to centre, to ensure that the hosesdo not float in the fresh concrete during casting process.
Use sealing caps at the end of vent hoses to ensure that theconcrete does not penetrate into the hose.
Injection
When injection needs to be carried out, locate the red venthose, remove the sealing cap and fix suitable injectionnipples and accessories. It is imperative that the followingsteps are followed in the listed sequence.
- Fill the hose with injection material using injection pumpsuntil flow is observed at the other end (white hose).
- Plug the end.
- Pressurise the Supercast Predimax Injection Hose
It is essential that the injection material penetrates the joint toensure this. Maintain the pressure for 5mins after the materialhas been injected with no pressure loss observed.
Better results are achieved when using moderate pressureand a longer injection time, as opposed to a shorter injectionperiod at elevated pressure.
It is recommended to repeat the same procedure from theother end to ensure even distribution along the length of thejoint.
Limitations
The concrete should be minimum 28 days old prior tocommencing injection.

Standards compliance
Supercast PVC waterstops are suitable for use in contactwith potable water. "Water Byelaws Scheme – approvedproduct", listing number 8804054.
Description
Supercast waterstops are extruded from a high grade PVCcompound which has been formulated to give excellentflexibility and longevity characteristics. They are available asstraight lengths and factory produced intersections or as afactory prefabricated segment of a network to minimise sitejointing.
Principles of waterstop function
Supercast waterstops work because of two specific aspectsof their design.
a) Valve principle
Simple waterstop profiles based on dumbells are cast intothe edges of adjacent concrete panels which act as baffles. In the event of joints opening as drying shrinkage or othermovement occurs, the edge bulbs of the profile act as anchors. These induce tensions across the waterstop resulting in asealing effect at the inner faces of the edge bulbs.
constructive solutions page 2 of 4
Supercast PVC
b) Tortuous path principle
Profiles with a more complex cross section have a muchgreater surface area. They present a much greater resistanceand more difficult path for water to seep around the section.
The Supercast range incorporates both of these principles. The products offer a fully continuous 4 bulbed designmaintaining both the valve and tortuous path principles. Theseprinciples are maintained in the transition from Rearguardprofiles in floors to centrally placed profiles in walls.
Supercast Hydrofoil sections
Centre bulb sections are used in expansion, contraction andconstruction joints. The centre bulb allows for movements ina structure to be accommodated whilst its hexagonal designprovides a flat surface. This allows shuttering and joint fillersto fit snugly.
The 330 mm profile is specially designed for use in roof slabswhere a greater degree of movement may occur particularlyduring construction.
Hydrofoil sections
Supercast Watafoil sections
Plain web sections are used in construction and contractionjoints.
Watafoil sections
All centrally placed Supercast waterstops incorporate aneyeletted, reinforced edge flange. This enables them to beeasily positioned by wiring to surrounding reinforcement.
Supercast Rearguard R
Plain web sections which are placed externally for use incontraction and construction joints. They incorporate a centralfin to assist setting out shutter location.
Supercast Rearguard S
Sections incorporate a flat top centre box which allowsmovement to be accommodated in expansion joints. The boxalso provides a seating to support joint fillers.
All Rearguard sections incorporate a nailing flange with areinforced edge to provide a secure fixing that will resist tearing.
Supercast Angleguard
An externally placed waterstop for use where the joint linecoincides with a change in level of the slab soffit. The profileis designed to co-ordinate with the 250 mm Rearguard Sprofile.
page 3 of 4constructive solutions
Supercast PVC
Supercast Rearguard Kicker
An extra wide version of Rearguard R profile which is used toseal wall/kicker joints where the concrete kicker is being castafter the slab rather than monolithically with the slab. Theextra width enables the waterstop to span both the jointbetween kicker and slab as well as the joint between kickerand wall.
Dimensions are approximate and subject to manufacturingtolerances.
Technical support
Fosroc offers a comprehensive range of high performance, high quality, construction products all backed by BS 5750certification. Fosroc offers a technical support package tospecifiers and contractors which includes computer-aideddesign (CAD), standard details and technical advice fromstaff with unrivalled experience in the industry.
Design criteria
The choice of the width and thickness of waterstop is largelygoverned by concrete thickness, the position of thereinforcement, aggregate size and complexity of the pour.
In general the 250 mm width of waterstop is suited to wallthicknesses of 250 mm and over. For concrete less than 250mm thick, the use of a narrower waterstop approximating tothe wall thickness will be appropriate. 150mm and 200mmprofiles are available for this purpose.
Centrally placed waterstop
These waterstops are positioned within the thickness of theconcrete components and as a result are supported byconcrete on both sides. They are therefore able to withstandwater pressure from either side. This makes them suitablefor use in water retaining structures. They will prevent loss ofwater from within the tank and will prevent ingress of groundwater when the tank is drained down.
Externally placed waterstop
These waterstops are designed for use in basement, foundation and floor slab construction in vertical and horizontaljoints in both water retaining and water excluding structures.
When used in walls, externally placed waterstops will onlyresist water pressure from the face to which they are fixed. When used below floor slabs, where the waterstop issupported by the blinding concrete or when placed in verticalsituations against permanent concrete shuttering, externally
placed waterstops will resist water pressure from either face.

Installation instructions
Supercast Hydrofoil and Watafoil
Waterstops must be installed so that they are securely held intheir correct position while the concrete is being placed.Concrete must be fully compacted around the waterstops toensure that no voids or porous areas remain. Wherereinforcement is present, an adequate clearance must beleftto permit proper compaction.
The brass eyelets used for securing the waterstop are locatedoutside the edge bulbs so as not to create water paths aroundthe profile.

Supercast PVC
Supercast RearguardW hen used on ground slabs where the waterstop issupported on blinding, Rearguard profiles usually requireno fixing. Lay the waterstop centrally over the line of the jointto be formed.
Fixing to vertical shuttering is done by nailing through theouter nailing flanges leaving the head of the nail proud sothat it is held in the cured concrete. This prevents thewaterstop being displaced when the shuttering is struck.
Fixing to vertical shutter
Supercast Rearguard KickerIn addition to nailing to the external shutter, the 330mm Kickerprofile is equipped with brass eyelets in the central rib. Twistshort lengths of tying wire through these eyelets so that whenthe kicker is cast they act as anchors, holding the centre ofthe waterstop tight against the face of the concrete. Thisprevents the build-up of debris between the waterstop andthe kicker prior to the wall being poured.
Supercast AngleguardFixing in position is done in a similar manner to SupercastRearguard.
Site jointing instructions
Jointing of Supercast waterstops is carried out using FosrocHeat Welding Equipment. The ends to be joined are cutsquare and held in alignment in a special jig. The ends arethen pressed either side of a special heated blade, until aneven, molten bead of PVC appears around the section. Theheated blade is then removed and the molten ends pressedfully together. The PVC cools to form a strong
fusion welded joint. Full instructions are available fromFosroc.
Fosroc PVC heat welding equipment
EquipmentJointing jigs are available for all profiles and sizes.
Heater blades110v and 220v blades are available.
Warning: Ensure that heater blades are earthed.PrecautionsHealth and safetyHot weld site jointing of PVC waterstops results in theliberation of hydrogen chloride mist and vapour. The OEL(operational exposure limit) of 5 ppm can be exceeded instill air confined spaces, therefore forced ventilation mustbe provided or a suitable respirator used.

Description
Supercast SW10 is a swellable waterstop that can be installedand positively linked into conventional Supercast PVCwaterstop networks.
This alows the use of Supercast PVC for expansion jointsand Supercast SW10 for construction joints, all the timemaintaining an intergrated network.
Supercast SW10 is made from high performance syntheticelastomeric strips. The swelling action is the result of contactbetween water and hydrophilic groups which are part of theSupercast SW10 ‘Basic polymer’ molecular structure.
The hydrophilic groups are not subject to extraction or loss ofswelling performance by prolonged or repeated wetting. Thisis a unique feature of the basic polymer. Expansion of thewaterstop creates a positive pressure against the face of theconcrete joint, thus preventing water passing through the pro-tected joint.

and Supercast SW20 for construction joints all the time main-taining an integrated network.
The Supercast SW20 is made from high performance syn-thetic elastomer strips. The swelling action is the result ofcontact between water and hydrophilic groups which are partof the Supercast SW20 'Basic Polymer' molecular structure.
Design criteria
Supercast SW20 should be used to prevent the passage ofwater through non-movement joints in both new in-situ con-crete and between new and existing concrete. Supercast SW20increases in volume in the range of up to 300% and gives aresistance to hydraulic heads of up to 100 metres.
Swelling of Supercast SW20 in fresh concrete is minimaland most of the volume swell takes place after the initialsetting of the concrete has taken place.
Supercast SW20 is suitable for application between existingand newly placed concrete where there is little or no steelcontinuity and therefore some small movement may occur.
Supercast SW20 waterstops should be positioned to ensurethat a minimum of 70 mm cover of concrete is present toaccommodate pressure developed during the swelling pro-cess.

Ancillary materials
Supercast SW20 Connector
A Supercast SW20 component moulded in water swellableelastomeric. It is designed to connect with Supercast Hydro-foil, Supercast Watafoil, and Supercast Rearguard profiles. This connector provides a method of ensuring and maintain-ing the integrity of a waterstop network, for example, whenexpansion joints occur.
The connector is push fitted around the outer bulb of theSupercast PVC waterstop. It is then bonded to the concreteand jointed to the rest of the Supercast SW20 strip.
Supercast SW Adaptor
This adaptor has been developed to solve the problem offixing a waterstop to a diaphragm, or secant piled wall.
The Supercast SW Adaptor combines a water swellablematerial and a PVC profile. It provides a method of continu-ously jointing Supercast SW with Supercast Rearguard ‘R’ atright angles to each other in the same plane. Such junctionsoccur between diaphragm or secant piled walls, pile capsand floor slabs.
The use of Supercast SW Adaptor simplifies the forming ofthese critical junctions. Site welding of the Supercast SWAdaptor to the Supercast PVC, followed by butt jointing to theexisting SW strips is all that is necessary. This provides apositive connection between the two systems. It eliminatesreliance on site workmanship to make complex junctionswith epoxy or cementitious mortars.

Standards compliance
Nitoproof 100 and 120 comply with IS:9862 - 1981 specificationfor ready mixed paint, brush applied bituminous, black, lead-free, acid, alkali, water and chloride resistant.
They also meet the requirements for coatings suitable for useon surfaces in contact with potable water - tested by PublicHealth Institute, Bangalore.
Description
Nitoproof 100 and 120 are based on raw materials which areamongst the most water and water-vapour resistant surfacecoating materials available. They are also resistant to a widerange of chemical attack.
Specially selected bitumens are blended to produce variousgrades, each designed to provide the best possible protectivecoating for its practical purpose.
Nitoproof 120 incorporates fibres which give body to the filmand act as reinforcement in the coating, eliminating crackingand crazing under conditions of thermal movement.
Note : In common with all bituminous and tar based coatings, and many other organic materials, Nitoproof 100 and 120 aresusceptible to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light and arenot, therefore, recommended for use in situations where theywill be exposed to direct daylight. They are however, ideallysuited for use in sandwich constructions, or as surface coatingsin enclosed tanks or structures, or below ground, where theirdurability is well proven.

Application instructions
Surface preparation
Preparation of surfaces prior to the application of Nitoproof 100and 120 is most important.
Surface must be clean and dry and all loosely adhering particlessuch as rust, mill scale, soft mortar, cement laitence or oldcoatings must be carefully and thoroughly removed by wirebrush and/or using Reebaklens. All dust must be removed bysoft brushing. Surfaces must also be free from oil or grease.
Where a mortar or concrete surface is smooth and shiny as theresult of 'polishing' with a steel trowel, it must be lightly wirebrushed to ensure a satisfactory key.
In the case of newly emptied water tanks in contact with water, the body of the surface must be allowed to dry out thoroughlybefore application. Otherwise, residual water may prevent asatisfactory bond being obtained.
Nitoproof 100 and 120 should not be applied to surfaces whichare wet. In such cases, Fosroc should be consulted foralternative treatments.
Important : The strength and reliability of any coating is only asgood as the surface on which it is applied. If this is weak orpowdery, such as soft or friable mortar or poor concrete; or flaky,as cement laitence or old coating material; then the Nitoproof100 and 120 membrane may fail along with the substratesurface.
Where any surface is suspect, it should be chipped off or cutback to sound material and, if necessary, made good withsuitable good quality mortar or concrete, and well cured, priorto coating with Nitoproof 100 and 120.
Priming
All surfaces should first be primed with one full coat of Nitoproof100 to ensure the adhesion of subsequent coats of eitherNitoproof 100 or Nitoproof 120. The coverage obtained with thepriming coat of Nitoproof 100 will vary considerably with thenature and porosity of the substrate but will typically be in therange of 4.0 to 6.0 sq.m / litre.
To determine if one coat is sufficient, is best judged by thecolour after drying. If a dense and even black coating is obtained, the surface may be adequately primed irrespective of coverage

obtained. If the coating is patchy in appearance, then a furthercoat is necessary to ensure satisfactory priming.
Over coating
Once the priming coat of Nitoproof 100 is dry, it may be overcoatedwith either further coats of Nitoproof 100 or Nitoproof 120according to the requirements, allowing each to dry completelybefore applying the next.
Important
1. Each successive coat must be applied at right angles tothe previous one to ensure efficient filling to brush marksand low spot and a satisfactory overall film thickness.
Medium stiffness bristle brushes are recommended forboth Nitoproof 100 and Nitoproof 120 but should not be toostiff as to cause grooving of the film.
In case where a very heavy bodied coat is required, Nitoproof130 may be used and should be applied with a steeltrowel.
2. Nitoproof 100 and Nitoproof 120 must be brushed evenlyand not allowed to form pools in hollows and, particularly,in troughs or rough tamped concrete. Otherwise, a surfaceskin may form causing solvent entrapment before completedrying can occur. This may later give rise to blow holes inthe protective film.
Drying times
Under warm dry conditions where good ventilation and aircirculation exists, drying both Nitoproof 100 and Nitoproof 120is fairly rapid. Typically 4 to 8 hours in cool or very humid weather,e.g., during monsoon, or in enclosed tanks or spaces with littleventilation or air flow, 24 hours or even more may be requiredbefore each coat is dry. In case of enclosed water tanks finalfilling of tanks should wait for a minimum of three days or untilthe last coat dries and all solvent vapour has disappeared.
Cracks and joints
Effective coating over cracks and joints in the substrate isdependent upon their size and extent and whether they are liableto further movement.
Hair-line cracks : Fine hair-line cracks which are confined tothe surface of the substrate only, can generally be sealed with acombination of one coat of Nitoproof 100 followed by two coatsof Nitoproof 120.
Shrinkage cracks and construction joints : Provided theseare not subject to further movement or only very minor movementtreatment is recommended.
If crack is relatively wide, say 2mm or more, it should be rakedout to approximately 6mm width and 6 to 12mm depth to form agroove with vertical sides. A Vee shaped groove is unsuitable. The formed groove may then be filled with a suitable repairmaterial such as Nitomortar PE, a polyester repair mortar orConbextra GPI, cementitious grout mixed to mortar consistency, and applied in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.Very narrow cracks do not normally require filling.
1 Prepare a piece of gunny cloth or glass fibre mesh ofsufficient size to overlap the crack or joint by 75 mm on eitherside and beyond it in each direction.
2 Apply one full coat of Nitoproof 100 over the area of thesurface to be covered and, whilst still wet, press the cloth stripfirmly onto the Nitoproof 100.
3 Immediately, follow this with another coat of Nitoproof 100over the reinforced area by using the brush as stippler, workthe Nitoproof 100 through the cloth to fuse with the wetNitoproof 100 beneath. This fusing of the Nitoproof 100 coatis important, and, when dry, will hold the cloth strip in position.
4 Further coatings, usually with Nitoproof 120, are thenapplied over the entire surface to be treated, once the clothstrip is set and dry.
Movement of cracks and joints : In all cases where these occur,it is likely that cracks will propogate through any protective film, including additional screed or plaster covering, and analternative method of sealing such cracks or joints must beemployed.
Nitoproof 100 and 120 are not recommended in such cases.
Structural joints : In all structures where it is required to coatover the intersection between vertical walls and base slabs, orbetween adjacent walls, special care should be taken.
Where such intersections form a right angle, it is recommendedthat, after first priming with Nitoproof 100 or Nitoproof 120, afillet should be provided at the intersection.
Where intersections do not form a right angle, either due toprior shaping of the substrate or the line of the structuralmembers forming a shallow angle, then reinforcement of thearea upto 75mm either side of the joint is recommended. Thisshould be done using gunny cloth or glass fibre mesh asdescribed for shrinkage cracks and construction joints.

Covings
The junction between concrete slab and parapet wall shall betreated with polymer modified mortar using Nitobond SBR.
Mortar toppings
Where Nitoproof 100 and 120 membrane is to be covered witheither concrete or sand/cement layer or tiles are to be beddedon mortar. The final coat of Nitoproof 120, whilst stillwet, shouldbe sprinkled liberally with 3mm clean grit ( Not sand or dustyaggregate ). When the coating is dry all loose grit should beremoved with a soft brush, to leave the remainder embeddedin the coating to form a key for topping which can then beplaced.
Vertical plastering
The provision of a grit key is not feasible on vertical surfacesexcept where the coating is carried only a short distance, say100mm or so, up a wall.
If a complete sandwich construction, such as an inner liningwall of bricks, blocks or poured concrete is intended, then it isnecessary to provide a mechanical key for plastering. A suitableand proven method is :
1. Coat the vertical surface fully with Nitoproof 100 and 120 tothe finished requirement.
2. Drill and plug the wall at intervals of a maximum of 300mmin each direction using suitable galvanised screws or nailsinto plugs.
3. Attach galvanised wire mesh of 20mm to 25mm gauge, tightly stretched between fixings and held slightly off the wall.
4. Using sand/cement mortar, preferably incorporatingConplast X421IC, integral waterproofing admixture, plasterthe wall in the normal way making sure a good bond isobtained with the mesh. Generally two thin coats, say 20mmof plaster with suitable setting time between each, arepreferable to one thicker coat. The first coat of plaster isscratched to form a key for the second.
Note : Drilling through Nitoproof 100 and 120 membrane doesnot normally impair the water resistance of the overall film but ifundue disturbance is feared, the area around each fixing shouldbe spotted with Nitoproof 100 before attaching the mesh.
Cleaning
Tools and equipment should be scraped as clean as possibleand all remaining Nitoproof 100 and 120 should be removed
with white spirit or kerosene. Spillages of Nitoproof 100 and120 should be covered with sand or sawdust and later removedas far as possible by scraping. The use of solvent is notrecommended as this may extend the risk of staining.
Typical applications
Nitoproof 100 and 120 have a wide range of uses and there arefew buildings or other structures where they may not be used insome part of the construction to meet a specification orovercome a problem, where a water resistant membrane isrequired. Typical applications are :
External tanking of new constructions below ground to inhibitingress of water, or protection of concrete against sulphatebearing or other aggressive ground water.
Basements and foundations
Internal tanking of existing below ground structure in seasonalsituations, where these are dry at the time of application andadequate restraint against subsequent water pressure can beprovided.
Ground floors
Horizontal DPC courses in concrete sandwich constructions toprevent rising damp through floors and walls.
Construction joints
Coating of joint faces in concrete floor and wallbefore placingconcrete, increases water tightness or dry joints, particularlywhere an overlap or tongue and groove features are employedin water retaining structures.
Bathrooms
Tanking membranes below entire floor tiling or screeds andinside W/C floor recesses, to prevent downward leakage andtracking of water through floor and wall structure.
Roofs and balconies
DPC membranes laid through sandwich slab constructionsand parapet wall to arrest downward ingress of water into thestructure.
Water tanks
Internal water resistant tiling. Also to protect the concreteagainst effects of chlorinated water, and to inhibit algae growthand facilitate easier cleaing.
