Not exactly a grot spot butlooking a bit neglected and

untidy was how best to describethe Garden of Rest area in theChurch Yard, the place wherethe ashes of many local peopleare buried.

However after a strenuousSaturday morning workout on the17th August the area is nowlooking much better. The heap ofdead branches and old wreathshave been cleared, bushes cut backfrom the burial stones and a generaltidying up has transformed the area. The workout team consisted ofCarol Rowett, Wendy DePear,Shirley Gratton, Maureen Kent,Harriet Kent, Martin Pitt and DenisGlenn. The tractor and trailer forthe removal of the rubbish waskindly loaned by Pete Ulyatt.Whilst the trailer was on site TerryHarrington took the opportunity totrim some of the other bushes inthe church yard. A big thanks to allthose involved.

Editor’s comment: I wonder ifmore people from the village wouldhave volunteered to be a part of theworkout team had they kown it wasgoing to happen. Would you havevolunteered?

Firstly, inspect your lawn; if youhave a layer of thatch (dead organicmaterial) within the grass, thisneeds to be removed by raking. Inan ideal world a lawn should beraked every month, but very fewget this level of luxury. This can beachieved with a hand rake orpowered version. I have found thisto be particularly useful this year, aswe have had long, dry spells, leaving a lot of dry brown grass.

Next thing to look for is if yourlawn is suffering from compactionafter a busy summer. All lawnssuffer to some extent, but excessivecompaction leads to poor drainage.

If you consider that you do have aproblem area, spiking is the answer.A trusty fork will spike small areas, larger areas may need a wheeledaerator. The depth that you need tospike depends on the level ofcompaction, but 3-6 inches deepand about the same distance apartshould be fine in most cases toincrease the movement of air andwater to the roots.

Top dressing is a processgenerally reserved for the extremelawn enthusiast. While it doesimprove the general health of alawn, the main advantage is to levelthe surface. If you want to achievea lawn on which cricket can beplayed, then a mixture of loam, sand and peat in the ratio 3:6:1 canbe applied. Shovel on and levelwith a broad rake. Don’t try andcorrect too much, leave all bladesof grass exposed or you may haveto reseed.

Finally, and I would say mostimportantly, fertilise your lawn. This year particularly dry spells candamage your lawn and a goodnitrogen fertiliser can improve rootgrowth dramatically, which willmake a real difference in the healthof your lawn and it’s ability tocompete with weeds. A stressedlawn is a weedy lawn.

Another area of the garden thatneeds a bit of a sort out this time ofthe year is the pond. If your pond iswell established, then haul out afew of the water plants to leaveenough surface area for next year’sgrowth. When you are doing thisleave the plants on the side for awhile, to give any trapped watercreatures a chance to wriggle backto the pond. And don’t forget to putyour nets over the pond before theleaves start falling.

If you can resist the temptationto cut down dead or dyingperennial stalks until spring, theycan provide a great place for overwintering insects and can look quitedramatic in frost or snow. We allneed to do our bit to help maintainthe diversity of life in our gardensand it is usually to a gardener’sadvantage.

September is about as excitingas it gets for lawns. There are

a host of procedures, potionsand apparatus that can beapplied, depending on thecondition of your lawn and howmuch time you have on yourhands. To the uninitiated thetiming and order that youapproach these tasks can bebewildering. So I shall guide youthrough some of the things that Ilike to do with a lawn.

Alan White has sent us this picture from 1942-43 with someinteresting details, so we thought we’d share them with you.

The men were all members of the Royal Observer Corps during theSecond World War and several of them actually lived in Fosdyke.Others came from Holbeach St Marks, Wigtoft, Sutterton andAlgarkirk.

thinks this was in the Frieston areabut he’s not one hundred per centsure.

Alan remembers, as a young lad,the Lancaster attacks on enemytargets and recalls a magnificentsight as they flew in formationalong the path of the Welland. Ifthey were in trouble whenreturning from a mission theywould broadcast a frequency that apost would pick up using the codeword Darkie. When Fosdykereceived this they would giveGrantham its position and theheadquarters would direct thetroubled Lancaster to anaerodrome, usually Tattershall, sothat if it crash landed it would notinterfere with the next mission.

After the war the post was still inuse until they built an undergroundunit at Mandyke Road betweenFosdyke and Algarkirk. By then themen in the picture had beenreplaced by a younger generation. The underground post is no longerthere.

The Royal Observer Corps wasresponsible for spotting planes intheir area. Fosdyke had its ownpost, situated alongside the RiverWelland, and the surroundingvillages had their own posts whichall crossed at the peripheries of theirarea and covered The Wash. If a

plane was spotted with theirinstruments they would phonedirectly to the headquarters atGrantham with the exact position.Often this could be the enemy, andin at least one instance theirspotting resulted in a Germanfighter being shot down – Alan

Churches are the greatest gloryof Lincolnshire. Nowhere else inthe world are there so manymagnificent churches in so small anarea. But somebody has to maintainthem. Most parishes do their best, but many, especially the smallones, need encouragement andfinancial help.

This month brings newbeginnings for pupils and studentsof every age as a new academicyear begins. From the smallesttoddler to the oldest maturestudent, the prospect of learningnew things makes us both a littleexcited and a little apprehensivetoo. A whole academic year isopening up, offering newopportunities for us to grow inknowledge, understanding andskill.

In other areas, like the world ofwork, the autumn is often a time fornew projects to begin as everyonereturns to work after the summerholidays. With renewed energy andrefreshed interest, we feel moreable to tackle new projects orharness new ideas.

AllSaintsFosdyke

NEW BEGINNINGSIhave always thought of September as a month for new beginnings, and one which therefore resonates

very much with our faith.

In our churches, the pattern offellowship that goes on outside ourregular worship will be beginningagain after a summer break –whatever form that pattern takes forour particular parish – prayergroups, perhaps, or Mothers Unionmeetings, fellowship, lunch clubs, and so on. The pattern iswonderfully unique in every parish.

One of the things we havediscovered over the last couple ofdecades is that learning does notstop when we leave full-timeeducation. It is a life-long process, however formal or informal it mightbe.

This is just as true in our gainingin knowledge and understanding ofour faith. It is a life-long process todeepen our knowledge of the onewho is the Way, the Truth and theLife. Throughout his earthlyministry, Jesus called people tomake a new start and to learn aboutand demonstrate the love of God intheir words, thoughts and actions.

Jesus’ ministry concluded withthe resurrection, the greatest newbeginning of all time, whichshowed that through God’s grace, love and forgiveness we can allmake new beginnings fromwhatever situation we findourselves in.

May God bless your newbeginnings at this time of year, whatever shape or form they maytake.

get it offyour chest

No doubt that’s going to be ourfamous last words and next weekwe’ll all be walking round in gasmasks! I feel for the new people atthe end of Thompson’s Road, where the caravan now sits, whohave designed a beautiful dreamhome that’s going to lookwonderful when it’s finished. I thinkthey’ve yet to suffer the nasalonslaught and the consequentialinfestation of fruit flies that even theresidents born in Fosdyke haven’tyet acclimatised themselves to.

Back in 2002 Oldershaws ofMoulton applied for planningpermission ‘to erect building forcomposting onion waste andexcavate lagoon at HodgmansFarm, Wash Road, Fosdyke’. Theplans show the site – actually at theend of Thompsons Road where thecurrent onion mountains stand –being covered by a roof, much likean open barn. It was to be built intothe field away from the existingconcrete.

A couple of years ago a concretebase was laid opposite the site, onthe other side of the end ofThompsons Lane, but no lagoonwas built. Had this been a part ofthe original application it wouldfallen outside the permissions ofapproval in that the base was laidmore than five years afterapplication was granted. As far as Iknow no other application wassubmitted and maybe Oldershawsof Moulton consider the stipulationsunworkable as no further buildingwork has been carried out – and

yet, some landscaping, ie treeplanting, did take place.

I wonder if the stipulationspertaining to the buildingapplication made in 2002 can alsobe applied to the currentcomposting regime. For instance:‘No importation of waste shall takeplace until measures to preventodour nuisance have been […]approved […] throughout theperiod the development is in use’.I’m sure we can all vouch for theinadequacies of measures, if any, that have been taken. Insecticidespraying, to keep down the fruitflies (when complaints are made)doesn’t reduce the odour.

A public footpath passes rightnext to the existing composting siteand the small uncovered drainagepit could be considered dangerous, particularly if children are playing inthe vicinity. No doubt the smell issupposed to keep them away! If thelagoon had been built it would havebeen 15 metres by 15 metres and, with the banking around the sides,2.4 metres deep. That’s a prettysubstantial hole!

We live in the country though,so should expect the occasionalunpleasant smell, but sometimes itjust seems that a cavalier attitudeexists amongst the ‘gentry’ or atleast those who espouse gentryism(my word), that’s not to say a littleback slapping and handshakingshouldn’t go on, just that it’d benice if people who live near toobnoxious extablishment could gettheir voices listened to.

We’ve been very lucky with the weather this year. It’s not beenconducive to the stench of rotting onions consuming the

village of Fosdyke. Sure, we’ve had the occasional day where anodour of rotting onions has pervaded the village but not enough tostop us from opening our windows to relieve the, sometimes, oppressive heat. We’ve been let off lightly.
