German Exchange A FTER a long journey to

Würzburg from home, the Farlingaye students were greeted by their German exchange partners and families to be taken to stay with them for a fun filled week.

I stayed with my partner, Jana, and her mum Sylvia in a small village with “doll’s house” like cottage painted different colours, half an hour outside of Würzburg called “Kleinrinderfeld”.

The next day on arrival at the school, we regrouped with the rest of the Farlingaye students, who each had a different story to tell about their first night in Germany.

We were introduced to the Headmaster of the school, and then we took a trip to the Festung Märienberg, an enormous 13th Century Fortress that overlooks the city. At the Festung, we were guided around to see many interesting things. After that we walked around the Fortress walls for a truly spectacular view of the city from above. Würzburg was beautiful; yet so different to what English towns look like.

That afternoon we experienced German lessons and we had the opportunity to teach some Syrian refugees English; it was such an amazing experience, and they were all such lovely people. After an extremely exciting day, it was time to go home and have a delicious schnitzel meal!

Our third day was the trip to Bamberg; everyone was so intrigued to visit it. Bamberg was one of the only towns in Germany not to get bombed during WW2; we were incredibly lucky to see it. It was one of the most beautiful towns I had ever seen. We visited an astonishing

cathedral with elegant carvings and an incredibly high ceiling.

We also crossed a dazzling canal with many bridges: one of which was covered with hundreds of padlocks. They are used as a symbol of love; couples write their names on the padlock, lock it to the bridge and then throw the key into the canal.

Friday was the day that I had been excited for all week. We were going behind the scenes at the “Mainfrankentheater”! We saw them wig making, constructing scenery and the practice rooms. I couldn’t believe how much effort they put into t h e i r p r o d u c t i o n s , i t w a s phenomenal! Following this, we went into the centre of Wurzburg for some shopping. We then went to visit the town hall (Rathaus) to see where the city council make all of their important decisions. We decided that it would be suitable to have a debate whilst we were in there and it soon got very expressive.

On Friday evening, the German students organised bowling for everyone. It was a lovely evening as we got to meet everyone properly and make friends with even more German students. We all had so much fun even though it was quite clear that the German students were far better at bowling than any of the English students! Afterwards Jana and Sylvia decided to take me to the Festung Marienburg to see “Wϋrzburg by night”. The view was stunning! The streets were peaceful and all that could be seen was the twinkle of the street lights, the astonishing baroque architecture and the distant vineyards that lined the outskirts of Wϋrzburg.

At the weekend, after a lazy morning, we set off to German “GO APE” with Jana’s best friend, Christian, and his partner, Sam.

Climbing on high wires between trees was definitely an exhilarating but nerve-racking experience!

A long lie in on Sunday, again, got me ready for a long day! We went to Kristall Palm Beach – a massive water park with loads of water slides and pools (with wave machines!). My favourite water slide allowed you to slide down in large rubber rings for up to 3 people! There was also a completely crazy slide where you were sent round in a loop the loop but I was too scared to go on that one. It was totally thrilling and I would definitely recommend going there, especially in the summer!

On the 7th day, at school we regrouped with the rest of the English students ready for a trip to the Residenz, a beautiful palace that was built for the Prince Bishops of Wϋrzburg in the 1700s. The whole group was stunned by the beauty of the interior design and sad to imagine that so much was destroyed during the 16th March 1945 bombings.

We enjoyed lunch in the tranquil

palace gardens before going into the main city to do some more shopping. Then we headed back to the school to meet our partners and enjoy our last night together.

After a great week of getting to know our German partners and German culture, all of the German and English students met at the school for one last time to say their goodbyes to all the good friends they had met over the week. It was quite sad as I enjoyed my time in Germany, but also a relief to know that I could see all of my friends again.

After a final hug with our partners we set off to Nuremberg for some last minute shopping and waved goodbye to Wϋrzburg.

Overall I had a great week in Wϋrzburg that I won’t ever forget. Though it was slightly strange to begin with, I thoroughly enjoyed the week and found it very interesting! Lucie Nunn, 9E

Marvellous Mammals and Moths! O VER the next few weeks,

students wi l l have the opportunity to see mammals and moths up-close. The monitoring is part of the school’s Go Wild project, which is an exciting partnership with the Royal Society and the British Trust for Ornithology.

The mammal trapping will take place on Thursday mornings before school, with complimentary breakfast provided. Students can see moths under the microscope on Thursday lunchtimes. The mammal and the moth monitoring is weather dependent, so students should listen out for information in the daily notices for finalised plans. For each of the mammal sessions there will be a sign-up sheet outside the Science Team Room.

The main aim of the monitoring is to investigate population sizes of

Junior Maths Challenge I N the recent Junior Maths

Challenge, open to students in Years 6, 7 and 8, nearly 80 students sat a really challenging paper but managed to produce a fantastic set of r esu l t s w i th many notab le performances. In total 67% of the students received a certificate. Gold certificates were awarded to Evie Zoio, Felix Church, Lucas Domingos, Daniel Howard, Tilly Hobbin-Cooke, and Taylor Holton of Year 8; Daniel King, Joe Turnbull and Jamie Myerscough of Year 7. Additionally, the award of 21 Silver and 20 Bronze certificates really emphasises the Maths talent across the lower year groups and indeed the Year 6 students who will be attending Farlingaye come this September.

Following the Junior Maths Challenge, students who perform well are invited to sit a follow on competition called the Junior Kangaroo. I am delighted to announce that six of our students scored highly enough to qualify for this competition. They will sit these papers in the coming weeks.

Jamie’s Food Revolution S TUDENTS in Year 7 had the

opportunity to participate in the ‘Jamie Oliver Food Revolution’ and understand the importance of being able to cook.

The 15 lucky students learnt to prepare and cook a recipe that was cooked all over the world as part of the event. Luke Bailey, former Farlingaye Student, trainer to students at the Skills Academy, Halesworth, and Food Revolution Ambassador in Suffolk, led the session.

It was a wonderful experience for the students and we were thrilled to have Luke on board for all our students; he is a keen patron of the school. Mrs Gray

Readathon T HANK you to everyone involved

who made this year’s Readathon such a success.

On Friday May 20th, 104 students settled down in the Library to complete a reading marathon from 8am till 6pm. The students had a great time, and were sponsored to complete the event. The money raised will be divided up into 3 parts, Bowel Cancer UK, School library and two school clubs.

Thank you to Mr Picton, Dr Harrison, Mr Smith, Ms P Tyndale-Hardy and Ms Hargadon who all read to the students during the day.

Students had a wonderful time reading with their friends and at the same time raising money for worthwhile causes. Thank you to all

the students who took part and thank you to Mr Macdonald and Mrs Houston who organised the day. Mrs Mason

EU Referendum O N June 23rd, in line with the rest

of the UK, we will be holding an EU Referendum in school.

The Year 12 Politics students are currently preparing presentations to deliver to students in assembly time. These will reflect both sides of the debate. Students in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 will then vote on whether they think the UK should leave or remain in the EU. Which way will it go?

Results of the Referendum will be posted in the next forum! Mr Fitch

Art Workshops F OR two evenings in May the Art

department ran workshops with textile artists Madelaine Nightingale and Sue Cranwell. These were part of the Woodbridge Shakespeare 400 celebrations organised by Tim Cornford. Mrs Ma rkham co - o rd ina t ed the workshops which involved creating mixed media textile sculptures using Shakespeare's works as a starting point. Books were re-worked with stitch, print, dyes and paper manipulation to make exciting sculptures. The resulting artworks will be displayed in Woodbridge library over the Summer holidays. PE Round Up Athletics

W E’VE had some fantastic individual and team athletics

performances so far this term. The Suffolk County Championships was the first event of the term and we took 48 students to compete in an array of events. On the day, there we re some f ine ind i v idua l performances, with numerous Farlingaye students proving to be very competitive in their respective events. The standout performers on the day were Isaac Fervearyear, who finished 2nd in the 200m and 1st in the Long Jump, Holly Fisher, who was 1st in the 1500m, Teddy N’Tuli, who was 1st in the Hurdles, Gemma Ramsey, who was 1st in the Javelin, Anna Firth and John Millar, who were both 1st in the 1500m Steeplechase for their age category, Henry Milldown who was 1st in the 800m and Abi Rose, who was 2nd in the 3000m. Off the back of these performances Isaac, Teddy, Holly, Anna, Henry, Gemma and Abi have all been chosen to represent Suffolk at the Anglian Schools in Norwich on Sunday 19th June, which is a fantastic achievement.

Following on from this event, we entered 4 teams in the ESAA Schools’ Cup in Bury St Edmunds. On a cold and blustery day, it certainly wasn’t suited to students getting personal best times and distances. However, the weather did not deter the Farlingaye performers; as a result we achieved some great team scores. Gemma Ramsey top scored with a Javelin score of 32 points, whilst Lotte D’Hane’s 300m (18 points), Seb Mobee’s High Jump (19 points), Shondel Smith’s 100m (26 points) and Holly Fisher’s 1500m (23 points)

also scored very well for their respective teams. After all the events the scores were rounded up and Farlingaye finished a creditable 2nd in 3 of the age categories and 1st in one. As a result the Inter Boys and Inter Girls will now progress to the ESAA Regional Finals and we wish them every success in that competition.

We are also in the midst of many local competitions and have experienced success thus far with the Year 8 and the Year 9 boys’ teams both winning the South Suffolk A competitions, with the Year 8 girls and Year 7 girls both finishing 3rd in their A competitions. The Year 9 boys now progress to a County Final in which they’ll compete

against the top 6 teams from around the County.

I’m sure all of the students involved in the athletics teams so far this year, the many others who are regularly attending Athletics Club, as well as all of the students who have enjoyed athletics in the lessons this year, are very much looking forward to Sports Day on June 22nd and we hope to see many people there supporting them. Farlingaye Flyers

M AY and June have been relatively quiet months for the

Flyers due to exams and personal commitments. Olivia Lewis and her horse, Cobbold Point, competed at the SJ National Qualifiers at Norton H e a t h o n t h e 5 t h J u n e . Unfortunately, they didn't qualify, but had two great rounds in very hot conditions. 8 faults in the 1m class and finished 5th in the 1.10m. Mrs Gray

Ipswich District Athletics Competition

A MASSIVE well done to the Year 7 girls’ athletics team who

reached the second round and attained a very admirable 3rd place at the Ipswich District Athletics competition on Wednesday.

In a close competition between F a r l i n g a y e , K e s g r a v e a n d Woodbridge, the girls will progress into the County finals. The team that competed over the two rounds were Tia Mee, Ella Brown, Ella Firth, Bethan Field, Isabel Sidhu, Poppy Sidhu, Lily Bemmer, Sophie McDonald, Imogen Sidhu, Scarlett Longbon, Grace Fricker, Darcy de

Bree, Miceala George, Ruby Ford, Isobel Sidhu, Darcy Debree, Brooke King. We had many high place finishes across all track and field events and were unfortunate to finish the relay event with a dropped baton on the final changeover.

This girls’ team should be very proud of their achievements and I am sure they will do extremely well in the County finals. Mr Lawrence

Cricket

T HE U14 Boys got their cricket season off to a terrific start with

an impressive victory away at Hadleigh High School. Oliver Fisher was man of the match with a terrific 41 not out. Teddy Ntuli and Charlie Crossley both took excellent catches to help win the game. A strong performance from all the boys has set us up well for matches against East Bergholt and Felixstowe Academy. Mr Steed
