The visionaries
Keith Smith – Founding Chairman
• 1977 to 1982 Price, Northsteel Fabricators
- Why the association? (1979) “Quite simply to gain profitability for its members.”

The visionaries
Keith Smith – Founding Chairman
• Chairman report (1980)
- No-one involved in heavy engineering needs to be told of the problems besetting our industry at present.
- HERA commissioned surveys have identified a 50% reduction of forward orders, the reduction in staff numbers by 20-25%. Statistics tell us a high proportion of skilled tradesmen are leaving our industry for overseas
- We are all told of the “petro-chemical boom” which can provide a large workload for us. Our surveys tell us our industry is over 50% structural steel. A transformation to plate work fabrication, pressure vessels, tanks, stacks and pipework, will need all the support which a research association can provide.

Keith Smiths report
“Dr Wolfgang Scholz joined us as the first in-house appointment. As we indicated to him at the time of appointment, we had some reservations as to whether he could make the change from expert technologist to administrator. We were wrong! He has brought to the position, a boundless enthusiasm, which tempered by his technical background makes him a very strong Director.”
