Message from the Chairman of the Board

God continues to bless Fort Worth Christian School in so many ways. There are numerous examples of how God’s hand is clearly at work among us. We see this in our academic, spiritual, athletic and extra-curricular programs. We see evidence of this in the quality of people that are employed at the school and engaged in the lives of our students. This includes our administration, faculty, coaches and staff. As we look toward the future, the Board of Trustees wants you to know of our continued commitment toward excellence in every area of the school. I would like to provide a brief update regarding several areas of

importance to our stakeholders.

I am pleased to report that our board and administration are working closely and collaboratively to assess our programs and offerings. This relationship is vital for insuring the health and success of our organization. We are working closely to raise funds so that we can continue to improve our facilities and grounds. This would not be possible without our donors and families that have stepped up financially to help us build the Chapel and Performing Arts Center and refurbish the turf on Barrow Field. Your support helps us continue to grow and thrive.

We are working together to intentionally create the right culture at the school. This has required us to look closely at the way we do things currently and objectively assess how we compare to others in our area. The board and administration are focused on making the FWC experience the best in the North Tarrant County area.

It is critically important for board and administration to challenge one another by constantly asking questions about how we are doing and where are we going. We have identified four areas of focus for the next 12 Months. We have already made significant progress on some of these areas and have hired some extremely gifted people that will spend their time and energy focused in these areas.

These areas are: • Create and utilize new tools to measure our performance • Enhance our campus spiritual life programs • Enhance our financial processes and systems • Reorganize fundraising efforts to a critical few

I need to acknowledge that this is my last article in the Cardinal Magazine. I have served as FWC Chairman for the past six years and am stepping down from this role after our July meeting. The past six years have been rewarding and challenging at the same time. I believe I am stepping down from this role when FWC is in a very good place. We are blessed to have a committed and capable Board of Trustees. I would like to introduce two new trustees that were added to the board in May of this year, Denise Herrold and Todd Strever. We are very excited to have them come in and serve along side of us. My successor as Chairperson is Julie Reed, who will begin serving in this capacity at the beginning of the new school year. I would also like to give special recognition to Jay Goin who has served along side me as Vice-Chairman and Kelly Moore, our school President, who both supported me as Chairman of the Board.

Thank you all for the support I have received over the last six years.

Mike ChaseChairman FWC Board of Trustees

Summer 2014 | THE CARDINAL 3

Over the last six years Fort Worth Christian School has experienced a tremendous amount of growth and improvement in many areas. The common thread that runs through all of these positive changes

is the visionary leadership of our Board of Trustees Chairman, Mike Chase. Mike will be stepping down in August as Chairman but will remain on our Board. We are thankful to have him as a continuing member of our team.

Mike’s leadership has yielded numerous academic, spiritual and facility improvements to the FWC community. The FWC family welcomed the MacBook and iPad initiatives and the expansion of the high school science and technology facilities with enthusiasm. The addition of a Director of Spiritual Life is a vital component to our faculty and the spearheading of the largest capital campaign in the history of our school is funding the construction of a new chapel. The Chapel and Performing Arts Center will house our students’ daily worship and other events. Tremendous improvements to our athletic facilities include the current turf replacement at Barrow Field. Also, the establishment of the Cardinal Education Foundation created a much-needed endowment fund which continues to strengthen the school’s mission.

Mike is the best board chairman I have ever had the opportunity to serve with and FWC has been blessed beyond measure by his strong and caring leadership. His focus on accountability and systemic growth will have a positive impact on FWC for decades to come. Please join me in thanking Mike Chase for his visionary leadership. We are favored to have so many wonderful and committed people serve on our board. Mrs. Julie Reed has been elected as the new Chairman of the Board and we anticipate more great things under her leadership. We are grateful that God continues to bless us in so many ways. FWC is His school and our greatest desire is to follow His guidance.

For the kids,

Kelly MoorePresident

TRUE GREATNESS National Merit Finalist, Allison Whiting, defines it well in her final remarks of her Valedictorian speech.

We have so many opportuni-ties, the most precious of all being the opportunity to choose. As much freedom as we have, some graduates have been told that you must be doctors, or lawyers, or at-tend a certain school. We live under the constant expecta-tion of greatness.

I believe this is the secret: true greatness has less to do with figuring out what you want to do and doing it well, and more to do with figuring out who you want to be and being it. You’ve got to determine who you are before anything. The good news for those of us who follow Christ is that we know who we are.

From your identity is where greatness comes. From here, that inner sense of peace arises and identity is found.

CARDINALSSOAR

In May FWC gave 108 AP exams.

The classes are overseen by College Board and are given nationally on the same day

across the country, even around the world. AP exams are scored

on a 1 - 5 scale (1 lowest, 5 highest). Scores of 3, 4, or 5 are considered passing and will often be considered for college credit

by many universities.

✯52% of those who took the exams scored a 3 or above

✯ 10 students scored 5, the highest possible

Campaign Update

In May the FWC Board of Trustees unanimously approved funding and immediate construction of a $6.4M Chapel and Performing Arts Center on the campus. This decision followed notification from the Amon G. Carter Foundation that FWC will be the recipient of an award in the amount of $250,000 for the project. Our parents, staff and community leaders have expressed their excitement regarding this new addition to the FWC campus:

“Being Mayor of North Richland Hills, I am also keenly aware of the need for performance halls in this community. I wholeheartedly endorse this project and the way in which it will help us promote the arts in north Tarrant County.” - Oscar Trevino

“Having a new facility to house chapel and performing arts will truly enhance the education we provide to our students now and in years to come.” - Mike Chase, Chairman of the Board of Trustees

Projected details of the new Chapel and Performing Arts Center include:

• Projected completion date of May 2015• Chapel available for use by each campus, all grade levels• 700 seat auditorium• UIL-regulation stage for practices and performances• State-of-the-art audio/visual equipment and lighting• New band hall• Individual and ensemble practice rooms• Backstage support rooms

Soon we will offer the opportunity to name seats in this new facility, at $300 each. Once the new Chapel and Performing Arts Center is a little nearer completion, we will also have personalized bricks available for the front walkway. Please watch for these and other exciting announcements to come.

FWC will also be replacing its aged football field turf this summer. Because of many generous donations, a contract for this project has been signed. The turf will be delivered in July and installation is scheduled to be completed by August 1, just in time for the beginning of the new school year.

Chapel and Performing Arts Center Funding Approved!

The face of FWC is changing! We are so glad that you are a part of the excitement.

Stand“Therefore, my dear brothers and

sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the

work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

1 Corinthians 15:58

The spiritual theme for the 2014-2015 school year is Stand. The culture that we find ourselves in is an increasingly difficult environment for people of faith. In many ways it feels like the world is dying, and that hope is dying with it. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul reassures the Christians in Corinth, that Jesus has overcome death and decay through his resurrection from the dead. Because he is alive, we can live vibrantly in this world, with the knowledge that we have inherited eternal life with him. In this assurance is the power we need to stand firm.

Each 9 weeks will feature a different supporting theme as we learn to stand.

The first 9 weeks we will learn to stand together. We were never meant to live alone within the body of Christ. We

stand together as we stand for Him.

The second 9 weeks we will learn to stand on the rock. There are many different messages that our students hear from our culture as to what

a solid foundation is. Money, success, and achievement are just a few. During this 9 weeks we will focus on living a life that is firmly grounded in the Lord.

Even though we belong to Christ, the enemy is not finished trying to “steal, kill and destroy.” We are daily engaged in a battle for our souls. The third 9 weeks we

will learn to stand in battle as we rely on the strength of Christ to overcome darkness.

In John 8:36, Jesus tells us that if he has set us free, we are free indeed. If we are in Christ, we should live lives of freedom. During the final 9 weeks we will learn to stand in freedom.

The following students went on the Peru Mission Trip 4/21 - 4/29:

Peru

The Peru mission trip was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. It opened up my eyes to

what being a servant of the Lord is all about and what it should look like. When working at the orphanage, they gave us lunch, which is a big deal because they are already struggling to make meals everyday. They gave us whatever they had, and shared with us openly. It felt like a community, but even better, it felt like a family. We thought we would be helping them, but they helped us even more. I saw God work in each and every person on this trip and I am proud to call them my friends. Peru helped shape my way of thinking and how I serve others. I was blessed to have the opportunity and hope to go back next year.
