Last year we submitted a request to have a member from the National Board of Directors come to Fort Worth to speak to our Chapter. In September we were se-lected and next Thursday, March 28, Martha Stratton, MSN, MHSA, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC, will provide us with an update on National AORN activities during our business meeting and she will present our CE pro-gram: “You’re a Perioperative Nurse: So What? Advocacy in Periop-erative Nursing”. One contact hour will be provided for those who attend the presentation in its entirety. Please show your support for Martha Stratton by at-tending our next meeting. As we move closer to 2013 AORN Con-gress in March, please take advantage of voting for National Officers through the AORN website. It only takes a few minutes and your vote helps to keep our organization strong by providing leaders that represent us in our complex practice endeavors. Speaking of Congress….This week our Chapter was selected to be the Texas State Reporter for the 2013 Congress
First House of Delegates meeting! This responsibility includes counting the num-ber of chapter delegates from Texas, re-cording and reporting the number prior to the start of the meeting. It’s similar to roll call during a Democratic or Republican Convention. Chapter 4406 is being recog-nized!! So what’s next? We are hoping for more rewards and awards at Congress as we have applied for chapter excellence recog-nition. No matter what, we know that the Fort Worth members are the best! Thank you all for the hard work and dedication to our profession and especially for keeping our patients safe.

St. Joseph Hospital recently succumbed to age and deterioration, sitting vacant for nearly a decade. The cost of redevelopment of the building was cost-prohibitive. Though sad for those of us who worked in the facility, the land will be converted to green space. More than 20,000 bricks have been saved and will be used to build a memorial, fountain or walkway to commemorate St. Joseph Hospital. Tarrant Coun- ty Hospital District, aka JPS Health Network, owns the property and will at some point use the 6 acre land to expand its current facilities. St. Joseph Hospital was the oldest hospital in Fort Worth, founded in 1883. The hospital, built by railroad workers, was called the Missouri Pacific Hospital. In early 1885, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio were invited to take charge of nursing. The Chief Surgeon convinced the Mother Superior of the order to send ten sisters to Fort Worth to staff the hospital. The hospital burned down in 1885 and was rebuilt by the railroad workers. In 1889, the hospital was sold to the sisters for $15,000 and was renamed St. Joseph Infirmary. St. Joseph Training School for Nurses opened in 1906. In 1930 the name changed to St. Jo-seph Hospital. The property was expanded several times. In 1994, Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp bought St. Joseph and closed the facilities a year later. The property was sold in 1997 to a California company that operated an Alzhei-mer’s center in part of the complex before going into bank-ruptcy. The property closed in 2004 when the building’s cool-ing system failed. Your legacy will live on. Rest in Peace, St. Joseph Hospital.
