The main excavation block contains prehistoric artifacts as early as 9,000 years ago in units surrounding a stone lined well. The adjacent ice house (1790) appears to have been constructed over top of the well. We are hopeful that remains from the fort may have been discarded in the well prior to settlement by Captain McAllister in 1787.

Artifacts recovered from 9,000 years ago

We are currently approximately 12’ down in the well and are recovering bits of glass and pottery dating from the 20th century occupation of the mansion.

A Koens-Crispin projectile point fashioned from metarhyolite dated to the Transitional Archaic Period, about 4,000 years ago shown in situ. Removal of the prehistoric soils surrounding the well shaft is necessary before we can begin to safely dismantle the well.

Excavations at Fort Hunter serve as both an archaeological investigation focused on finding evidence of the French & Indian War stockade and as a public outreach program. Visitors to the mansion frequently stop to ask questions and view the archaeology in progress. Volunteers rotate in and out during the six week period assisting with excavations , mapping and screening.
