Some of you are enjoying sunny weather in the South, and snow lovers are sticking it out in the North. Wherever you are spending the winter, Spring will be on the way soon! I do have to mention though, it has been a fairly easy winter… not too much snow, but a lot of sickness. Sometimes I feel like a broken record, as here we are again on surrenders. Executive Council has been working diligently to accomplish this task. Council has monthly meetings on the progress and looking at new strategies to try and locate policyholders. We have sent out repeated mailings to all Lodges. I encourage all Lodges to look at their lists and help us as much as they can. We know that we will not be able to find everyone, just remember that, “A good Viking, is an uninsured Viking.” Since September, we have had 200+ surrenders. We have also had a number of donations through surrenders: Burn Camp – 14 donations, Scholarship - 17, and 8 donations to Language Camp. Big thanks to all of you who donated back to the I.O.V.!! On the upside, all Lodges of the I.O.V. are now in good standing. Communicating with the Lodges, by calling and speaking with the Officers, we made great progress. All lodge dues, membership lists, and contact information has been updated, and given to our administrator. Rod, Robin and I couldn’t be happier! Keeping all Lodges in our great I.O.V. is what we need to keep growing. Viking Scholarships are coming up. Just a little fact, Viking Scholarship Fund was established on June 14, 1963 at the Grand Lodge meeting, in Boston, Massachusetts. There are many Junior Vikings who have been fortunate to receive this support; in our family we have had two scholarship recipients. I am looking forward to the outcome of this year’s applications! Language Camp information should be out to all Lodges. Last year we had a good response from our Junior Vikings, and we received five applications this year! This program is one of the outstanding opportunities we have to offer our young Viking members. All seems to be going well with everything going on within Council. We are very fortunate to have Robin Grinnell, our administrator; she is always thinking, and looking out for the good of our I.O.V. We can’t thank her enough. There have been a couple of changes to our Executive Council as two members, Sandy Cramm and Barb Hendry, have resigned. We wish them the best! Our two new members are Peg Schaeffer and Mary Beth Liskey, both from Linne’ Lodge. All of us on Council welcome them aboard! On a personal note, I have been busy with Council and learning every day! I saw that Linne’ Lodge is having their Polar Plunge, with a tremendous amount of support! If you have never seen a Polar Plunge, stop by, it’s exciting. I used to do the plunge for Ingjald and it can be a little chilly! If you are up in Kenosha, stop by for pancake breakfast in March and say “hi” to Vice Chief Rod. Always doing my best for our great I.O.V. Mindy

Administrator’s CornerHappy New Year, Vikings! Just a few quick items to cover this quarter…

New Email Now that we have all the “behind the scenes” technology stuff finished with the website transfer, we can begin using the IOV email address again. We are not going to have a bunch of different email addresses since I’m the only one reading them! If you need to contact IOV, you can use the contact form in the IOV website http://www.iovikings.org or you can email [email protected]. This email will work for all communication including membership, the journal, and IOV program questions.

New Lodge Officers Please remember to send your updated Lodge Officers anytime you hold elections or fill a vacancy. I need the officer name, title, mailing address, email address and phone number. Almost all of our communication with lodges is now done by EMAIL. This saves time and money – please make sure we have an email contact for your officers!

Lodge Newsletters Please add the Fraternal Administrator to your lodge newsletter mailing list! Email news can go to [email protected] and print newsletter can be sent to: IOV Fraternal Administrator, PO Box 27186, Lansing, MI 48909.

Member Roster - REQUEST Many of our lodges have been “cleaning up” their membership lists. PLEASE make sure to send an updated copy of the list to the Fraternal Administrator. We need to make sure we are working from the same list as we’re tracking membership and mailing the Journal. Each Lodge submits a Quarterly Report that should include deaths, expelled members, and reinstatements. Keeping us informed allows us to better serve all Vikings!

FALSE: “I can’t surrender my insurance because I don’t want to lose my membership!” As we move forward with the IOV, membership and insurance are two DIFFERENT activities. Membership does NOT rely on insurance! If you are a Grand Lodge member due to the closing of your subordinate lodge, you can maintain your IOV Membership by mailing your $15 National Dues check (payable to IOV) to the Fraternal Administrator! Do NOT send to UTG – they are no longer tracking membership payments. (Individuals who were expelled from a lodge may not be eligible for Grand Lodge membership. The Executive Council will review all policies when the Constitution is updated for the 2021 Convention.) If you are a member of an active local lodge, you will continue your IOV membership by continuing to pay your lodge and national dues. I hate to be one of those people who complains about the weather, but …. Is it spring yet?

Burn Camp News The Great Lakes Burn Camp winter session was held in Onaway, MI in mid-February with more than 60 campers enjoying the activities. We don’t have any pictures at this time, but you can check out the website. Mike Longnecker, the president of the Great Lakes Burn Camp, was at Winterfest in Muskegon. He presented our Chief, Greg Liskey, with a fireman bobble head in recognition of the ongoing support of Linne’ 57 and Muskegon Firefighters Local 370. It will be put on display at the Lodge.

There is nothing to report for the Illinois or Connecticut Burn camps except their websites: Illinois: www.IFSA.org Connecticut: www.CTburnsfoundation.orgMichigan: www.greatlakesburncamp.org If anybody from any other Lodge has information besides their websites please contact Bob Grinnell, 231-773-0490, or mail to 1249 Lakeshore Dr. #129, Muskegon, MI 49441.

DID YOU KNOW?According to 2010 census data, there are approximately 11,890,524 people of Scandinavian ancestry in the United States.

Hi All! Happy New Year to all you Vikings near and far. We have a few items to share and we will start out with our last breakfast in November. This was another very successful breakfast - in fact we had to even turn people away, which just goes to show how popular it is! Despite a few of us getting there at 4:30 am to get pancakes made ahead, we had people waiting again… which can’t be helped unless we start to cook the day before. I don’t think anyone wants to do that! All in all the customers were fine. We had a record profit on our bake sale: must be the two ladies (Alice and Nancy) who were selling that did it. I would like to thank everyone who baked because our sale would not be successful without you! As long as I’m giving out thank-yous, I would like to thank everyone who worked at the breakfast. You did a fantastic job as usual! Our first meeting in December was the election of officers and, after forty-plus years, we have a new Chief! I felt it was about time to get someone younger to take over those duties. Those elected and appointed were Jack Yule, Chief; Jerry Jacob, Vice Chief; John Roberts, Financial Secretary; Jennifer Yule, Recording Secretary; Joyce Jacob, Treasurer; Pat Bishop, Herald; Jeff Gullo, Assistant Herald; Outer Guard, Bill (Mongo) Washack; Inner Guard, Beverly Rischel; and Membership Chairman, Sala (Sven) Musatief. December 13th was our Christmas party. We had great food, thanks to all that pitched in, and we also had the ugliest Christmas sweater contest as well as our white elephant Christ-mas exchange. A great time was had by all.

SIGURD LODGE #30Kenosha, Wisconsin

Jack Yule getting installed as Chief with Paul Pitts Officers waiting to be installed

On January 10th I, along with Jenny and Jack Yule, traveled to Tinley Park to install the officers of Harald lodge. They have a very active lodge with younger members as well as old-timers too. Keep up the good work! On January 17th, Past Grand Chief Paul Pitts, Bill Hendry and Mike Conrad from Harald Lodge came to Kenosha and installed the officers of Sigurd. Thanks guys! Thanks to those who brought snacks and sweets, it really was appreciated along with Jack Yule getting the other food for the installation. A while back Wally Hansen’s mother passed away, we extend our sympathy to him and his family. Linda Roberts has been on the sick list for a while. Our spring Swedish pancake and sausage breakfast will be March 29th from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. Please bring baked goods for the sale. I assume we will be setting up for the break-fast on Saturday evening. On Saturday, April 25th, Sigurd Lodge will be hosting the spring Executive Council meeting at 9:00 am, all members are welcome to attend. We are still working on the surrender of policies, so if you know of anyone who hasn’t surrendered their policy yet please urge them to do so. You can still be a member of the IOV as long as you pay your national dues and local lodge dues. I would like to thank Peggy Stegall from Ellida Lodge in Rockford for searching for members with policies and also searching for addresses. Until next time… stay warm! If you’re cold, stop by and have a glass or two of hot Swedish Glogg.

LINNE’ LODGE #57Muskegon, MI

Well, today was the last day of Winterfest in Muskegon.  It was three days of great food, music and fun! We had French Dip on Friday night, a Steak Fry on Saturday Night, and a Breakfast Brunch on Sunday. The music was awesome, and a few drinks were had by all. If you haven’t made it to Winterfest yet you should plan to come next year. It was started by Al Majors 48 years ago. Al passed away and the event has been picked up by his son Alf and his wife Dianell, and their children and grandchildren. When you look in the dictionary for “volunteer” you’ll see the name MAJORS. What a great group of Vikings! In October (besides my birthday) we celebrated Linne’s 100-Year Anniversary and had a Halloween Party that would have frightened Frankenstein. In November we had a Taco Dinner, a dinner for our Veterans, Jazzy Steak Fry, and a Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale. What a Christmas Season we had! We decorated the Lodge, had a Smorgasborg Dinner, Lucia Fest, the Holiday Mixer, a Sing-Along, Children’s Christmas Party, and Christmas Eve Get-Together. And, if that wasn’t enough, we also had an awesome New Year’s Eve Party! We in Muskegon wish all of you a blessed 2020. Thomas (Tom) Jandt, Past Chief, Linne’ Lodge #57

INGJALD LODGE #65Jamestown, New York

Ingjald Lodge Celebrates Christmas Planning for Christmas began in November and activities commenced with volunteers, headed up by chairperson Lynn Lindberg, decorating our Lake Lodge the first Sunday in December. These volunteers turned our Lodge into a beautiful winter wonderland with colorful seasonal decorations throughout. Our annual children’s Christmas party, “Breakfast With Santa,” was held the second Sunday in December for youngsters 0-10 years of age. Once again Santa (Charlie Kent) arrived via the generosity of the Maple Springs Fire Department on a large fire truck. Santa was welcomed by an energetic and excited large crowd of youngsters and their parents! Each child was given an age-appropriate wrapped gift by Santa, Mrs. Santa (Darla Nelson) and many elf helpers. Pictures were taken of each child by Vice Chief Betsy Lynch. Each young person received a hand-crafted wooden “Darla Hese” (Swedish horse) personalized

with their name on it. These beautiful keepsakes were made by Bonnie Magers, Darla Nelson, and Dawn Stuart. Decorating Christmas cookies was enjoyed, after which the youngsters were treated to breakfast. Chief Jane Forsberg thanked Fred and Sue Bell who served as Chairpersons for this very successful event and extended appreciation to all the many volunteers who helped. Other holiday activities included the traditional Doppa I Gryta party with an abundance of Scandinavian foods being consumed; Ugly Christmas Sweater Party; participation in the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive; surprise raffles and Swedish New Year’s Eve Party. Of course, tasty meals were available each Friday and Saturday and a limited menu available on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday nights.

INGJALD LODGE #65Jamestown, New York

Ingjald Lodge Helps Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive Each year, for many years, members of Ingjald Lodge have helped spread Christmas holiday cheer. It has been a long-standing tradition to assist the Salvation Army in their Red Kettle Drive. Individuals and family groups volunteer to work the Red Kettles on one-hour intervals. Most of the volunteers have done so for many years and say that they look forward to this heart-warming experience. True to Viking philosophy of helping others, many volunteers say that they receive more “holiday spirit” than they give. It’s a wonderful way to usher in the holidays! Thanks and appreciation is extended to all who gave of their time. Seeing brother and sister Vikings participate in this community humanitarian effort is another reason to say, “PROUD TO BE A VIKING!”

Members of Viking Ingjald Lodge made their annual Christmas donations to three groups that involve helping people in need. Each group received a check for $300 in support of their work. Viking Chief Forsberg stated that these donations are consistent with the Viking philosophy of community involvement and helping those in need.

Vikings Make Christmas Donations

Newly elected 2020 officers for Viking Ingjald Lodge of Jamestown were installed at the first Lodge meeting of the year. Both new Chief Lynch and Vice-Chief Porter bring a vast amount of experience to their newly elected positions. Betsy was a former Diana Lodge President, Viking of the Year and has held numerous other positions in Ingjald Lodge. She has been a constant volunteer where needed and regularly seen with her camera taking pictures at Viking functions. Vice Chief Porter also brings a great deal of experience and dedication to her newly elected position, including Past Diana Lodge President (2), Chief of Ingjald Lodge (2), Viking of the Year, and numerous other leadership posts. Grand Lodge Chief Mindy Worden, part of the Installation Team, congratulated all the newly elected officers and thanked them for their service.

Swedish Tradition…. The Easter Smorgasboard! Many families will have a smörgåsbord at Easter, a buffet style meal with several dishes. It has the advantage that you can skip what you don’t like and have some more of your favorites. Typical dishes include:

• köttbullar (meatballs),• several types of pickled herring from a good supplier,• kall inkokt lax (cold poached salmon),• another cold meat such as lamb or chicken such as our excellent kall inkokt kyckling med citron

och rosmarin (cold poached chicken with lemon and rosemary),• cheese flan,• eggs halved and garnished with fish roe or prawns,• new potatoes with dill,• knäckebröd (crispbread),• cheese such as Västerbottensost,• salads, which often include fruit.

Desserts might include truffles, chocolate cake, and cloudberry parfait! And don’t forget your Påskägg (Easter eggs) - egg shaped containers full of godis (sweets/candy).
