FORSCOM in the news Meet Your Army As the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, rolls into Gunnery, they wouldn’t be able to shoot or move if they couldn’t communicate. Spc. Aspen Easter is the primary COMSEC Custodian for the Battalion S6 Shop. She also is the line representative, spending over 30 hours recently troubleshooting and maintaining the communication systems for both Attack and Battle Companies. After roughly three years of service, she’s looking forward to many more as she attends nursing school in her free time. Army Values The Army Values are a set of characteristics that are essential to the Army and instills these values into all Soldiers and Civilians with an expectation that they live them every day, in everything they do -- on and off duty. On the 101st birthday of the 1st Infantry Division, the ‘Big Red One’ honored an outgoing commander and welcomed a new senior leader back to Fort Riley. The First Division Museum in Wheaton, Illinois, recently held a ceremony to honor the 100th anniversary of first major ‘Big Red One’ victory of WWI. A 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives Command Soldier was recently selected as the Aberdeen Proving Ground Soldier of the Year. This presentation, developed by the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center, is for use at battalion level and below. With the onset of summer and the anticipated rise of off-duty mishaps, the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center launched its annual off-duty safety awareness presentation. Themed “Your Life, Our Loss: What You Leave Behind,” ODSAP contains materials and statistics that highlight the role of safety in off-duty activities. Scott Jackson told Pentagon reporters via videoconfer- ence June 13 from Kabul, Afghanistan. “The manner in which the SFAB operates requires a degree of specialized training, provid- ing self-sufficiency in difficult and complex situa- tions,” he said. In the time the brigade has been in Af- ghanistan, Jackson explained, the troops have witnessed Afghan forces taking the fight to the enemy and using their own resources. Afghan forces have used air assets, artillery and ground maneuvers with success in the fight. The 1st SFAB was designed and equipped for the specialized mission in training, advising, as- sisting, accompanying and enabling Afghan forc- es from the kandak to the corps level, Jackson said. A kandak is roughly the size of a battalion. SFAB members are volunteers who were se- lected based on their high level of technical ex- pertise, physical fitness and potential ability to advise a foreign security partner force, Jackson explained. “Since our arrival we have deployed advisory teams to every Resolute Support regional com- mand and partnered them with Afghan army, police and border force elements ranging from kandak to Afghan brigades and police districts and all the way up to Afghan corps, division and police zones,” he said. WASHINGTON -- Nearing its 100th day of de-ployment in Afghanistan, the highly trained and specialized 1st Security Force Assistance Bri-gade is seeing results, the unit’s commander said.
