Modernizing Digital Technology In Education To Help Enable Teaching And Learning Innovation And Student SuccessThe advent of digital technology has impacted every facet of society and business. Now, it’s an integral part of public sector organizations, specifically education. New and more powerful digital technology is enabling teachers, administrators, and participants in the education arena to provide better learning environments for students.

PROJECT BACKGROUNDIn March 2018, Dell commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a study to determine how technology has affected education institutions. Traditionally, IT departments have controlled the technology purchasing process, but in the digital age students, teachers, and heads of departments are starting to get involved. To flourish, K-12 education institutions must equip their staff and students with the right tools and technologies to empower them to deliver exceptional experiences. In this study, Forrester conducted an online survey of 206 key decision makers involved in influencing strategic K-12 education strategies in Canada, the UK, and the US.

Digital Technology Underpins Education Institutions’ PrioritiesAs digital technology continues to disrupt industries across the globe, this trend is duly impacting K-12 learning environments. While the applications and program names may be slightly different, the foundational setup is fundamentally the same, i.e., how education is absorbed and taught. For education institutions that are looking to provide excellent student experiences, a new mould must be cast for how students learn. In other words, technology must be blended into the education system in a way where pedagogical concepts, modes, and content/methods are integrated with the following technological systems and processes:

• Information gathering. Seventy-three percent of education institutions are capturing, analysing, and measuring data regarding student performance on the back end.

• Experiential learning. Creating real-world experiences for students with the use of technology fosters better learning environments (63%), and it allows for education institutions to redesign the learning experience (56%).

• Optimizing the infrastructure. Sixty-three percent also said that they are optimizing the building space to reduce costs of energy, power, etc.

55% of K-12 education institutions said they will leverage virtual classroom technologies to allow for more experiential learning environments through the use of emerging technology.

Experiential Learning And Collaboration Are Key Tactics In Meeting Strategic PrioritiesIn order to meet key strategic priorities, K-12 education institutions must ultimately improve the learning experience for their students. For example, 71% said that allowing for more authentic learning experiences will enable the staff to achieve their objectives of providing students with digital content and curriculum (68%).

Further, technology enables digital collaboration (64%) — in fact, the digital collaboration that is going on in K-12 classrooms is revealing of the way the workplace is shifting more toward remote access of information whilst working across the globe.

81% believe technology will play a central role in sharing students’ information with parents, thereby increasing the parents’ involvement in their children’s education.

Education Institutions Struggle To Execute On Their Tactical PrioritiesToday’s education infrastructure is multilayered, encompassing everything from campus facilities and data centres to software/applications and platforms. Our study found that K-12 education technology investments, which focus on supporting students within the physical school environment, will be able to improve student learning experiences, i.e., helping students navigate their school ecosystem (55%) or providing real-time learning experiences with emerging technologies like virtual/remote laboratories (54%). Yet, only 33% of education institutions said that they’re able to execute on this strategy over the next 12 months.

Revise The Number Of Third-Party Vendors To Decrease ComplexityK-12 education institutions need help with operationalizing their road map and providing infrastructure for sweeping transformation activities. Survey respondents revealed that they are turning to an array of third-party vendors in order to seek help, including system integrators (46%), education-specific VAR (45%), consulting firms (42%), and even software vendors (39%). However, seeking out a wide combination of third-party vendors only increases complexity and inhibits a smooth development phase from happening as the challenge becomes meshing together the various technology components.

This is exactly why stakeholders must re-define their technology partnership requirements — rather than using so many different types of vendors, using as few as possible can enact a greater focus.

With educators on the frontline, it’s important to understand which technology can help them get their jobs done most efficiently. 70% said it’s “very important” or “important” for educators to identify the technology strategy.

Digital Technology Rewrites The Rules Of EducationThe benefits of using digital technology in education are clear: educational institutions must realize their modern and digital-savvy potential. All stakeholders in the education community, including IT, academic leaders, board members, teachers, students, and the community at large, must work together to define a learning vision, and then they must strategize how the integration of technologies can enhance pedagogical approaches.

According to survey respondents, digital technology in education will make classes more engaging (62%), increase the productivity of staff (52%), and personalize the education experience (48%).

79% of survey respondents said they want to provide the best-in-class experience by leveraging the most appropriate technologies. They plan to do this by improving the technology ecosystem to better serve students (69%).

Learning Environments Should Encourage Anytime, Anywhere LearningDigital and virtual learning environments are an asset to educational institutions for they can be utilized on campus seamlessly. Capturing information in a digital format is invaluable, with 71% stating that a digital/virtual environment promotes flexibility to students in terms of their study needs. Further, 69% said digital environments increase opportunities for discussion and debate outside of class, and it enables instructors to provide a wide variety of learning resources for students.

This means that in an increasingly digitized world, studying flexibly paves the way for students to learn in their own time, which is further reinforced by having the ability to access a wide variety of resources (68%).

Create Student-Centred ExperiencesWith on-demand access to a wide array of digital resources, teachers and students have the opportunity to co-create learning experiences that align with each student’s learning style, pace, and passions. For example, digital learning environments support new ideas and experience sharing between students (71%), and educators are able to develop the critical skills, such as communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, that are needed for success.

Students have an opportunity to invest in how they learn by applying a range of learning resources and enabling success to both showcase confidence and critical thinking skills..
