The original Bootle F.C. were formed in 1880and played at Hawthorne Road. In 1889–90Bootle became founder members of theFootball Alliance. That season was the mostsuccessful as we finished league runners-up,reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup,

where we lost to Blackburn Rovers (0-7). When the Alliancemerged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle becamefounder members of the new Second Division. However, despitea respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out afterone season (and were replaced by neighbours Liverpool) andseemingly disappeared due to financial problems.Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, BootleAthletic. was later formed with the new team initially playing inthe Liverpool Leagues. In 1948 when the club were elected tothe Lancashire Combination 2, which was won at the firstattempt. However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and afterseveral tough seasons withdrew and folded during the 1953–54campaign.

In 1953, the current club wasformed as Langton and played inthe local leagues. After a verysuccessful spell in the LiverpoolCounty Combination (which wewon on numerous occasions) theclub reverted back to it’s

It’s better known identity of Bootle F.C. in 1973; and a year laterjoined the Lancashire Combination, which we won in 1976 and1977. Bootle then joined the Second Division of the CheshireCounty League, which was won in our first season, and we werepromoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire CountyLeague was one of the leagues that merged to form the NorthWest Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming amember of the First Division. The club spent most of their time inthe First Division until 2000 when we unfortunately dropped intothe Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, theclub dropped into the Liverpool County Combination. In 2006the club, with a new ground, were elected back into Division 2of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle wonpromotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won theChampionship. In 2009/10, our first season back in the VodkatPremier League Bootle finished a NWCFL highest placing of 3rd.In 2010/11 despite a shaky start Bootle finished a respectable6th place.

With the club continuing to grow off the field, all eyes are on what can be produced onthe field this season, with the NWCFL PremierDivision a firm goal in what could beanother success for this fast growing clublooking to progress again.

Up the Bucks!

All our yesterdays…..

Tonight's game will mean a lot to bothteams as a potential semi final placeagainst possibly Everton or ranmerecould be waiting for the winners.

We will be naturally looking for a betteroutcome against Formby than lastseasons games, were we beaten 3times. .Formby was obviously managedlast season by a true Buck, Big MickJoycey (Michael Joyce) who basicallybeat us the three times with a lot of ourlocal lads, ex Bootle lads too. Noargument we were poor in all gamesand they deserved it.

I was quite shocked that they didn’t giveMichael the job at the end of theseason which i never really understood.Formby obviously have their reasons forthat decision though and that is life.

I also spent seven good years atFormby back in the late 1990's, greattimes at the old Brows lane Groundunder Peter and Scotty. We had a goodside too and went on to win theChallenge Cup whilst we were in thesecond division.

Back to tonights game and we are ingood form right now. We are unbeatenin eight, winning six of them.

I'll be honest, changes will be madetonight as I want to keep lads freshand equally give starts to some ladswho may not have played as much inrecent weeks. We don’t have a set 11and with a squad of twenty I can chopand change when needed withoutfeeling I’ve weakened the team.People may look at this but some ladshave played Saturday, Sunday,Tuesday every week since the start ofthe season and it takes its toll.

With several players missing tonightincluding Young, Tommo, LiamBlakeman & possibly Byers this proveshow good a squad we have. I did thesame against Marine after we hadwon three in a row and made fivechanges, bringing lads in who whohad sat on bench and teastament tothem we didn’t look any weaker, beating them 2-1 and were well worthour win. Again will want to win tonightand will take Formby seriously asalways.

Players from Runcorn Town are joining the masses of men across the globe whoare raising money for charity by celebrating the month of “Movember” - themonth formerly known as November. The idea is that guys start the month with aclean-shaven face and then for the rest of the month, groom, trim and wax theirway to growing a full moustache in the name of charity. Town’s Captain SteLatham explained: “Myself and Assistant Manager Danny Salt decided that thewhole team should take part in the Movember charity campaign. The charitythat we have chosen to raise money for is a children’s charity based in Liverpoolcalled Zoe’s Place. This is a home from home for babies who have life limiting orterminal illnesses, special and complex needs to varying degrees. “They offercare for children aged from birth to five years old and rely on donations from thepublic to help them stay open to offer the care and support they provide. On topof raising money for this important charity, we also hope that we can have a littlefun along the way. "Looking around the dressing room, it is already obvious thatsome are going to struggle to grow much in the month!”.

The football clubs of Bootle and Everton were at loggerheads when they bothentered the Liverpool Senior knockout during the 1887/88-football season. Anargument had previously developed during a Whitsuntide football tournamentthat had taken place on the ground of the Liverpool Athletic Club at Fairfield.Bootle and Everton had clashed in final. The Anfield club won the game by 2goals to 1 but Bootle had strongly objected to certain decisions made by thereferee, which they claimed, had all gone in favour of their opponents. TheLiverpool F.A, who was asked to intervene, found in favour of Everton andawarded them the Shield that had been donated by the Athletic club TheBootle executive were unhappy with the decision and suspended allnegotiations with their neighbours at Anfield. Fate then took a hand. Everton, theholders of the trophy, were drawn to play Bootle in the 2nd round on theLiverpool Senior Cup.

The local sporting communitywas, at that time, awash withtalk of the new League offootball clubs that was to beinaugurated later that year andboth Bootle and Everton hadtheir applications firmly on thetable. Victory in the impendingcup-tie was vital for

both clubs. The Bootle party elected not to use changing room set aside for visitorsat the headquarters of Everton, the Sandon Hotel, choosing instead to make useof the facilities on offer at Salisbury Hotel in Granton road. They then walked theshort distance to where a capacity crowd witnessed their arrival on the Evertonground. The players then took their respective positions and the battlecommenced.

The game that followed was, in all possibility, the most wild and aggressive derbygame ever to take place in Liverpool and the least said about it the better. Threeor four players, during the course of the game, received a debilitating injury thatforced them to leave the field while others carried the scars of battle on to the finalwhistle. Everton, much to the joy of their followers, won the tie 2-0 and were cheeredall the way back to the Sandon. Their happiness however, was about to turn sour.

The Football Association was, at the time, investigating a protest made by BoltonWanderers against Everton who had recently elimination them from the F.A. Cup.The Anfield club, they claimed, had won the tie with the help of several playerswho were not eligibility to compete in the contest. The governing body, followingan investigation, found Everton guilty “persuading players to join them by financialinducement” and closed the Anfield ground for one month.

The Liverpool F.A. also punishedEverton by banning them from takingany further part in the present tournament and re-instatedBootle. The decision angered the Everton executive whowith drew their membership of the Liverpool F.A. and did nottake part in the competition next season. The Senior Cuphowever, was still in the Sandon Hotel. The trophy was allowed to remain withEverton until the eve of the final when Bob Lythgoe, the L.F.A. secretary, was detailedto collect it. The customers jeered when he removed it from the hotel trophy cabinetand sang the dead march as he left the building. Mr. Lythgoe then made goodhis escape in a hackney carriage.

The 1887/88 Liverpool Senior Cup final was played between Bootle and Stanley. The match took place on the grounds of the Liverpool Athletic Club in Fairfield andaround 500 people where in attendance. Bootle, who scored straight from the kickoff, took the lead without a Stanley player having touched the ball. The rest of halfwas of an “even nature” and the play change direction. Two further goals, early inthe second half, knocked the fight out of Stanley as Bootle went on to win the gameby 3 goals to 0. Mr. A. E. Holt, the president of Liverpool F.A., was on the ground andhe presented the Bootle captain, Tam Veith, with the trophy.

Everton later rejoined the Liverpool F.A. after a short absence while Bootlewent in to liquidation in 1893. These incidents leave Liverpool Ramblers, who joinedin at the out set, as the only permanent members of the association.

The hostility’s that existed between Bootle and Everton had now reached the earsof a leading journalist in the mill towns of Lancashire who wrote under thenom-de-plume of “Agreeable”. Our friend then penned an article (shown in thecentre pages of today’s programme) urging the two clubs, for the good of thegame, to heal the rift.

One bright note to emerge in the aftermath saw Bob Walton, who nettedseven times in the match, snapped up by Southport. The 21-year old was theBootle J.O.C.’s leading scorer at the time and went on to score regularly forSouthport’s second string before making his one and only Football Leagueappearance in February 1934.

Both clubs recovered from the mayhem to remain as two of the leaguesmost prominent names. Miranda shared the Harwood Cup in 1933/34 withBootle Social while Linacre Gasworks captured the trophy outright thefollowing season. Miranda, of course, were to dominate the Bootle J.O.C. forthe rest of the decade culminating in two Liverpool Challenge Cup successesat Goodison Park in 1936 & 1938.

The Battle ofLinacre Lane

“Disgraceful” and “the most notorious game in the history of the Bootle J.O.C.”were just two of the remarks made following a Harwood Cup tie betweenLinacre Gasworks and Miranda in December 1933.

The Bootle J.O.C. was one of the most powerful leagues under the control ofthe Liverpool County Football Association during the 1930’s but it was noplace for the faint hearted. It’s parochial nature setting up a number of localderby matches and with it deep tension and bitter rivalry. Miranda andLinacre Gasworks were two of the leagues leading clubs and had alreadymet twice in the 1933/34 season, a league game and a Harwood Cup firstround tie. Both had been feisty affairs, the latter at North Park just a weekearlier had finished all-square.

When the replay got underway at Linacre lane, Miranda took immediatecommand and inspired by ‘crack’ centre forward Bob Walton (also onamateur forms with Manchester City) rattled home three early goals. With thegame virtually settled so early on, Linacre Gasworks had several playerswho sought to settle ‘old scores’ and a number of brutal tackles followed. The game boiled over and after a bout of fisticuffs a Gasworks defender wasordered off. Another home player received his marching orders just beforehalf-time and refused to leave the field of play. The referee, Mr T.E. Galvin wasabout to abandon the game when a Miranda player, who was limpingheavily, agreed to go off as well to smooth matters over. At this point, severalfights broke out amongst the 2,000 crowd.

Matters did not cool down at half-time and after the resumption, the feudcontinued. Three more players were sent-off, several more were bookedand fighting broke out on the line on a number of occasions. Amid thehostility, Miranda continued to run in the goals, eventually winning 10-1.When, with grateful relief, the referee blew the final whistle, there were nohandshakes and an air of retribution lingered as several hundred spectatorswere in no hurry to go home.

First-hand witnesses to the ninety minutes of violence were several BootleJ.O.C. officials and Liverpool County FA committee men and both clubs wereeventually fined and severly reprimanded.

Both Miranda and Linacre Gasworks received heavy criticism from Liverpooland Bootle Newspapers prompting the formers honorary secretary, Mr J.Roache to respond in an attempt to restore lost pride. He stated that
