  • CHAPTER I Naples History

    Naples is the main city in the south of Italy, the capital of its home region of Campania, and the third biggest town in Italy. It’s an overcrowded and sprawling metropolis holding around a million souls, with a further two million Neopolitans populating the suburbs. It’s a major seaport, with shipyards, and thriving industries including iron and steel, petroleum, and porcelain … Naples combines great riches with some grinding poverty. Yet the bald statistics don’t start to describe this extraordinary, chaotic, exciting and resolutely southern city - Naples isn’t like the rest of Italy ☺! For many centuries, the political, economic, cultural, and artistic and history of the regions of southern Italy were ıdentıfıed wıth the hıstory of Naples. In fact, as in few other cases ın Europe (the Republic of Venice, the Grand Duchy of Moscow) the very name of the state – the kingdom of Naples were Regno de Napolı – ıs the same as the name of the capıtal. Of course Italy is a country of regions, of former city states and fierce local loyalties and rivalries. Modern Italy broadly divides itself into north and south (the Mezzogiorno) with Naples sitting proudly as the Mezzogiorno’s capital. Staunchly Catholic, Naples is rich in historical, artistic and cultural traditions and with its own distinct cuisine. The pizza originated here and is eaten, like so many other delicious local foods, out on the street. In fact the street is where Naples happens. Life is lived here in all its chaotic glory. It’s bustling, noisy and rather dirty; there is sometimes shocking poverty on display, and it pays to keep your wallet in an inside pocket. Cars and scooters weave frantically around each other and the baffling road system - we’d suggest you leave the car at home and walk. Meanwhile, Neapolitan is a language in its own right and you’ll hear the harsh dialect bellowed at volume. And this adds up to? One of the most exciting places you’ll ever visit. It also has some beautiful architecture, a thriving port area, and frequent ferries out to the lovely islands of Capri and Ischia; and the ancient world lies just out of town in the shape of Pompeii, Herculaneum and their ruins. (Here you will find our selection of Naples apartments for rent, holiday villas, short term rentals, rooms and bed and breakfast, and hotels.)

  • The city of Naples was probably founded by the Greeks around the eighth century BC, just kilometres from the older town of Partenope; this ‘new town’ or ‘Neapolis’ has been absorbing the influences of its settlers and invaders ever since. Romulus Augustulus, last emperor of the Roman Empire, was imprisoned here after being overthrown in 476. In the sixth century, Naples was conquered by the Byzantines, and it was one of the last duchies to fall to the all-conquering Normans in 1039, as they founded the Kingdom of Sicily. In 1266 Naples and the kingdom of Sicily were given by Pope Clement IV to Charles of Anjou, who moved the capital from Palermo to Naples. In 1284 the kingdom was split in two, and stayed that way till 1816, when they would form the kingdom of Two Sicilies. In between, Naples had been under the rule of Spain, Austria, and the Bourbons, and had (briefly) been a Jacobin republic. Finally, in October 1860, it became part of the new Italy. Perhaps part of the reason that Naples isn’t more of a tourist trap is nervousness on the part of visitors. For this is definitely not a pre-packaged or sanitised destination, and Naples doesn't boast the sophisticated elegance of Florence or Venice. Couple this with its reputation as the home of the ‘camorra’ (Neapolitan organised crime), and some grinding poverty, and many are put off. There is high unemployment and many people still live in the one-room windowless bassi of the city centre, little more than overcrowded slums, which in the late 1970s assisted an outbreak of cholera. Yet much is changing, with huge amounts of development money patching up the woefully neglected mediaeval churches and other buildings of the city centre. And Naples remains an ‘authentic’ destination; one where you can eat and sleep at reasonable prices, and where bars and cafes are more populated by locals than visitors. It’s superbly positioned too. With Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum inland (and the region of Campania to explore), there are also very good ferry routes out to Sicily and the islands of Ischia and Capri, and further afield to ports such as Genoa.

    You will find Naples tiring - at times the relentless al fresco activity makes the street

    more akin to an Arab souk than a European boulevard - but you’ll find it exhilarating

    too.

    Known officially as the Republic of Turkey is a country located 97% in Asia(mostly in the Anatolian peninsula) and 3% in East Thrace in Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan (the exclave of Nakhchivan) and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. TheSea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles (which together form the Turkish Straits) demarcate the boundary between East Thrace and Anatolia; they also separate Europe and Asia.[8] Turkey's location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes it a country of significant geostrategic importance.     Officially the Portuguese Republic (Portuguese: República Portuguesa, is a country located in south-western Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal is the westernmost country of Europe,[8] and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east. The Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are part of Portugal. The land within the borders of today's Portuguese Republic has been continuously settled since prehistoric times. In 29 B.C. the territory was occupied by the Gallaeci and the Lusitanians when it was integrated into the Roman Empire as the provinces of Lusitania and part of Gallaecia. Roman settlers strongly influenced Portuguese culture, particularly the Portuguese language, which is mostly derived from Latin. In the 5th century AD, after the fall of the Roman Empire, it was occupied by several Germanic peoples, mainly the Suevi and the Visigoths. In the early 8th century Muslim Moors conquered those Christian kingdoms, occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula. PORTUGUESE GROUP:

    Romanıa is a country located at the crossroads of Central and South-eastern Europe, on the Lower Danube, within and outside the Carpathian arch, bordering on the Black Sea.[8] Romania shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and Moldova to the northeast, and Bulgaria to the south. At 238,391 square kilometres (92,043 sq mi), Romania is the ninth largest country of the European Union by area, and has the seventh largest population of the European Union with 21.5 million people. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest, the sixth largest city in the EU with about two million people. ROMANIAN GROUP:

    Officially the Italian Republic, is a unitary parliamentary republican south-central Europe. To the north it borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia along the Alps. To the south it consists of the entirety of the Italian Peninsula, Sicily, Sardinia—the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea—and many other smaller islands. The independent states of San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within Italy, whilst Campione d'Italia is an Italian exclave in Switzerland. The territory of Italy covers some 301,338 km² and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 60.6 million inhabitants, it is the fifth most populous country in Europe, and the 23rd most populous in the world. Rome, the capital of Italy, was for centuries the political centre of Western civilisation as the capital of the Roman Empire. After its decline, Italy endured numerous invasions by foreign peoples, from Germanic tribes such as the Lombards and Ostrogoths, to the Byzantines and later, the Normans, among others. Centuries later, Italy became the birthplace of the Renaissance, an immensely fruitful intellectual movement that would prove to be integral in shaping the subsequent course of European thought.     S. Severo Chapel

    Legends:

    1. S. Severo was an alchemist, a scientist and a doctor who discovered the skin cancer fort he first time. He used to heal people with herbs. From Port’ Alba until S. Severo Chapel is a mystical zone; the legend says that that ghosts and spirits used to walk there by night. 2. In S. Severo Chapel there are human figures (skeletons) and people say there are petrified bodies, and call them “petrificados” but is not ready.

    In the Underground Naples used to be volcanic rocks and then it was used as a refugee. - Piazza Bellini was the legacy of the Greek Wall in the IV century; is part of a town belonging to the gate that leads to Via Tribunali.

    Forcella: The last stretch of the lower decumans, after Via Victoria Vecchia twists to the right, forming in fact the Forcella or dogleg, that gives its name to street to heart of a distinctive old working class quarter.

    Cathedral: This Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of the assumption stands on the site of the Episcopal seat of S.Aspren the first bishop of Naples in nearly 4th century. The cathedral was built under reign Charles I and completed during the reign of King Robert.

    S. Felıce Palace: S. Felıce Palace ıs a building from 1700 made by the architect S. Felıce that lived there. Pıazza Dante: Dante was the father of the Italian language. He wrote ‘Dıvına commedıa’ around 1200.

    Kıtchen Ando program (subjects)

    KichenAndo Applicant: Mosaico o.n.l.u.s. is an Italian non-profit, independent and autonomous association, born in the historic centre of Naples. Since 2003 we have been offering international meetings and educational seminars for young people as well as international regular trainings for active youth and social workers. Many of its members are under 30 and at local level we cooperate with organizations active either in immigration field and with disadvantaged young people. Our specific expertise consists in intercultural learning and non verbal communication methodologies with special reference to multicultural situations and contexts. Our goal is to promote independent and enjoyable learning and to contribute to a higher tolerance for “diversity” and to overcoming the hostility towards foreigners.

    Duration of the project: 16-25 June 2011

    Summary:

    KitchenAndo aims to involve 16 young people, from 4 different countries (4 per country), in an intercultural exchange during 8 days. The activities will focus mainly, but not only, about gastronomy. Through this experience we want to demonstrate how differences can, and should be, considered a form of enrichment and not of alienation between different cultures. The countries that will take part, Romania, Portugal, Turkey and Italy were chosen for their culinary differences, in order to make this experience even more meaningful and rich for those who will participate. Of course the main protagonists are the same guys who, through informal methods of work based on learning by doing, will become fusion-chef. The project is designed to develop team spirit and to appreciate what we don't know. The main theme will be joined to other cultural activities, in particular practices of painting. In addition there will be a full presentation, non-formal, of Neapolitan culture, rich in tradition. The whole project will be accompanied by reporting activities that will describe everything in a kitchen-reportage, in which the young people will be both creators and actors!

    Restaurant ‘EAT AND CRY FOR MORE’

    A new restaurant has been opened last Monday in Salvator Rosa. Daily News went there for lunch and spoke with Marco Bellini, the chef and the owner of Eat and Cry for More . He said that they make a traditional lunch starting with the first dish that is called Linguine . This first dish consist of 2 kg of linguine, 1.2 kg of nuts , garlic, olive oil and a little bit of salt. The second dish is called Chicken with Pineapple . The chef used 2 kg of Chicken Slices , salt, olive oil and a pineapple . The third and the last

    dish is Pineapple or Orange Salad that is easy to cook only with salad, fruits, nuts and a little bit of salt .All the three dishes had been prepared for 21 persons and are easy to cook . The owner invited us to enjoy dinner at his restaurant, one of the best in town. Eat and Cry for more definitely deserves this title.

    � 2kg Linguine

    � ½ Kg Nuts

    � Garlic

  • Cut the chicken into small pieces,

    add salt and put it in a pan with olive oil.

    Stire it for 15 minutes in lower

    temperature.

    When it is almost ready add the pineapple cutted into pieces.

  • � Wash the salad and the fruits.

    � Cut the pineapple or the oranges into small cubes and mix it with salad. Add a little bit of salt. And it is ready to be served.

    � Wash the basil and smash it mixed with olive oil, garlic and a little bit of salt. Add the nuts, smash them, and mix it all together.

    � Add a little bit of grated bread if you wish

    Ingredients

    For the filling:

    � large onion, finely chopped

    � cloves garlic, finely chopped or pressed

    � tomato paste

    � medium ground beef

    � salt, pepper, paprika, thyme and little

    rosmary

  • Peel the eggplant skin in strips lengthwise. Cut

    the eggplant vertically in 3-4 pieces, each about 1 inch thick. Then cut again horizontally, each piece about 2 inches long. Soak in water with a tablespoon of salt for about 30 minutes. Then dry with paper towels.

    Pour the sunflower oil in a large skillet. Fry both sides of the eggplants until the colour turns medium brown. After frying, place the

    eggplants on a plate with paper towel to soak up extra oil.

  • Meanwhile, cook the ground beef with the

    onions, tomato, garlic, salt and pepper. Then add the red pepper, cubanelle pepper and fresh green onions and cook for about 5-6 more minutes.

    Lay out the eggplant pieces in another pan.

    Put the beef mixture over the eggplants. Pour half a cup of water on top. Cook on medium heat for 15 minutes covered with the lid.

  • In a large cooking pot put the water together

    with the salt and pepper and let it begin to boil. In the meanwhile cut the potatoes, carrots, green bell peppers, zucchini and onion into fairly large pieces.

    When the water begins to boil throw in the vegetables and let them simmer for about 5-

    7 minutes then add the meat cut into cubes.

    Let the beef and vegetable boil for about

    15-20 minutes. In this time in a mixing bowl

    put the heavy cream with a cup of water

    and the cracked egg, mix it all together.

    After the 20 minutes have passed add the

    cream and egg mixture into the soup whisking constantly so it doesn't form

    clumps.
