UPDATE FROM THE WASH SECTOR

F.R.E.EActivities:

Project team participated in inception workshop for implementing partners at IOM in Maiduguri in December. Attended a subsequent workshop on WASH organised by UNICEF and hosted by CRUDAN in Maiduguri on Jan 25th.

Established project office at Hausari Bulama in the first week of January and held an inception meeting at which some community members participated.

Baseline risk assessment survey conducted in Damboa in January; Community Leaders including Bulamas and Lawans paid courtesy

visit; Local Government Chairman paid a successful visit by project team

on January 28th. Chair advised to establish LG Wash Unit to comprise of existing staff deployed from Health and Works Depts, having WASH Coordinator, and Sub-Unit Officers for Water Supply, Hygiene, Sanitation, M&E and Data. Chair shall meet with LG Secretary and revert on selected officers within a week. Encouraged to be gender sensitive.

In coordination with locals and camp managements, earmarked 18 targeted water sources (15 hand pumps and 3 solar powered boreholes) across host community and two IDP camps (Hausari and General Hospital) for routine maintenance. Two such water points were in abeyance at the end of December and were fixed by FREE in January: Hand pumps at Hausari Bulama 11o9’0.93’’N 12o45’19.9’’E; and Hausari I 11o8’55.25’’N 12o45’15.94’’E. Minor repairs carried out on hand pump at General Hospital IDP camp 11o10’5.81’’N 12o45’4302’’E

Satisfactorily conducted bacteriological test on sample water from target points for safety using H2STest Vials.

In coordination with residents and camp managements, earmarked 20 toilet blocks respectively in each of Hausari and general Hospital

with LG WASH Unit, and participation of said unit in WASH workshop to be facilitated by UNICEF

Furthermore, the project shall continuously maintain alongside chlorination, 18 targeted water points across Damboa host community and Hausari and General Hospital IDP camps.

The project shall continue solid waste management in target camps.

IDP Camps for routine maintenance and regular sanitation. FREE has established and trained VLOM WASAHCOMs comprising

13 persons in each of Hausari and General Hospital IDP camps, and 20 chlorinators for said purposes;

50 Hygiene promoters have been selected for later hygiene promotion activity in the Hausari, General Hospital and GSS IDP Camps;

Target 1,000 HH for house-to-house hygiene promotion activity and distribution of hygiene kits have been selected in Hausari, General Hospital and GSS IDP Camps as well as Damboa Host Community;

Hygiene materials including Dettol, Izal, Soap and Detergents have been deployed to the two camps of Hausari and General Hospital for WASHCOMs use;

Likewise, WASH NFIs including metal buckets, wellingtons, hand gloves, nose masks, etc have been deployed to target camps.

Waste management tools including diggers, rakes, brooms, shovels, pans, etc have been deployed to target camps.

Kick-off Total Sanitation organised in target camps in January. Materials deployed and rehabilitation work commenced on target

40 latrine blocks in Hausari and General Hospital IDP Camps based on camp leadership and community needs as well as risk assessment conducted by FREE Foundation. Camp-based VLOM part of work teams for continuous practical training on masonry and carpentry.

Slabs constructed across drainage behind northern classroom blocks in Hausari camp for ease of access to latrines and showers for children, sick and aged persons in February.

The project observed Global WASH day as on Calendar using such methodologies as TFD, focus group targeting, total sanitation, etc.

Continuous routine maintenance of 20 blocks of latrines in each of Hausari and General Hospital IDP Camps up to Dec 2019;

Regular sanitation of the target toilet blocks within said period through constituted WASHCOMs in Hausari and General Hospital IDP camps;

The project trained Hygiene Promoters, and House to house hygiene promotion and distribution of hygiene kits by 50 promoters in addition to 5 LG personnel to target 1000 households in three camps (Hausari, General Hospital, and GSS).

House to house hygiene promotion and distribution of hygiene kits by 50 promoters to target 1000 households in three IDP camps (Hausari, General Hospital, and GSS). The first trench of the HP activity was conducted in March, 400 HH benefited.

Solid waste management: we are carrying out collection and disposal of solid waste in target camps – Hausari and General Hospital camps. At Hausari work has been completed. General Hospital camp work-in-progress, and it is projected by Saturday 6 th April, 2019, work will be completed.

Supply and fixture of latrine hole covers and chains to secure same to target 222 latrines in Hausari and General Hospital IDP camps on going.

Project have continued routine maintenance of HPs in Hausari and General Hospital Camps and within Domboa Township. Three HPs were revitalised yesterday (3/04/2019). At Hausari Primary School and Shuwari Bulama Gujja, one (1) razor-pipe for each of the HPs was changed and pumps are back to function. One HP was also fixed in General Hospital camp as at 2pm yesterday.

Minor repairs of sanitary facilities are ongoing in the 4 camps managed by IMC WASH.

Rehabilitation of solar borehole at Hausari camp Replacement of broken taps in GHC, Central and Aburi camps. IMC still trucking 186,000litres daily to GHC, Central and Hausari

camps. Jetting of water ongoing in Aburi and Central camps. Daily water treatment (Chlorination), Point of use water testing,

FRC checks and other quality tests. Daily washing of latrines and bathing shelters. Supervised Camp sanitation carried out 3 times weekly Hygiene Promotion still carried out by IMC trained CHVs in 4 camps

and 6 host communities viz: Kauji Kura, Gumsuri, Kachalla Bulari, Wovi, Nzuda and Kalla,

Jeri can cleaning exercise carried out at water fetching point and at households.

Hygiene Promotion: Menstrual hygiene management FGD with GBV survivors

Construction of 10 combined blocks of latrines and showers (4 in General Hospital Camp, and 2 each in Central, Hausari and Aburi).

Rehabilitation of 20 blocks of showers

Construction of soak pits at General Hospital camp and Central camp.

Plan to register beneficiaries for NFI distribution targeting under 2 children and pregnant and lactating mothers (WFP beneficiaries).

Water trucking of 25,000 liters daily is still ongoing in unity camp.

Hygiene promotion is currently ongoing in host community with focus on hand washing and safe water chain.

Water testing is ongoing at Mercy corps water points in shuwari community, Damboa Central and unity camp.

Meeting with community leaders, CRCs and land owners was done to discuss on the use of land during our house hold latrine intervention.

Meeting with CRCs and community leaders on the registration of beneficiaries for CFW activities ( sanitation Brigade)

WASHCOMS have been set up and maintenance tools delivered to WASHCOMS( wheel barrow-2, head pan-2, shovel-2,digger-2,hand trowel-2,measuring tape-1,hammer-2, face mask-1,hacksaw-2, hacksaw+6 blades-1set, rubber boot-7 set, crow bar-1, chisel-1,safety helmet-3, rubber gloves-3 set, handglooves fibre 4 set, reflective jacket 7, rake-3, hoe-5 and cutlass 2.

Training of WASHCOMS will be carried out.

Selection of beneficiaries for CFW will be done

Sanitation activities to commence

Selection of household for latrine intervention will commence.

All regular activities i.e. hygiene promotion, water trucking of 25,000 liters per day, and water quality testing will continue.
