Grade Level Process

North Hunterdon High School

Eighth Grade

Our goal for eighth grade students is to begin orientation to North Hunterdon High School through the following activities:

• 8th grade parent night• Individual parent meetings regarding scheduling and course requests• Appropriate placement with regard to potential for academic success in

each subject area• Selection of electives based on individual student’s interests• Online power points• Online podcasts• Foreign language presentation• Individuals’ potential issues are identified for follow-up by means of

counselor visits in the spring• Ongoing articulation between North Hunterdon and all sending districts

regarding all departments

Ninth Grade – Personal Development

Our goals for Ninth Grade students personal development are: • Track community service accomplishments in

x2VOL/Naviance• Keep a co-curricular record• Become involved and pursue leadership roles in

co-curricular activities

To accomplish these goals the following activities are available for students:• Athletics and Activities Fair• Orientation in Alpha homerooms• Discussion of adjustment issues• Freshmen group meetings to provide more in depth

information on Guidance services• Presentation of Lifelines Program in freshmen health

classes• Interaction with Teen Pep Program• Rachel’s Challenge• Advisor/Advisee• John Halligan Assembly

Our goals for Ninth Grade students academic development are: • Build upon and improve good study habits• Build strong academic language,

mathematics, and critical thinking skills by taking the most challenging courses in which they can be successful

• Meet the high school counselor and discuss future plans for future scheduling

• Keep an academic portfolio

Ninth Grade – Academic Development

To accomplish these goals the following activities are available for students:• Review of schedules for accuracy and

appropriateness• Resolution of scheduling conflicts• Educational Proficiency Plans created for students at

risk• Discussion of schedules and tips for success• Review of students’ academic progress at the end of

each marking period• Counseling of students who are doing poorly• Review of 504 plan as needed

Activities Continued:• Group sessions regarding course selection and

directions on accessing Course Selection Guide online

• Resolution of schedule conflicts for second semester

• Introduction of Naviance in Financial Literacy classes

• Individual meetings with students for course selection and progress

• Ongoing participation in IEP meetings• Review of teachers'’ evaluations of students’

placements for next year, followed by schedule adjustments as needed

• Resolution of scheduling conflicts for the coming year

Ninth Grade – Academic Development

Activities Continued:• Review of final grades and addressing of failures• Consultation with students regarding credit

restoration and summer school• 21st century skills, technology, cooperative learning,

research skills, study skills all learned through Advanced Academic Literacies and Financial Literacy

Ninth Grade – Career Development

Our goals for Ninth Grade students career development are: • Begin to utilize Naviance for future college

planning• Be aware of course requirements of colleges and

universities• Know NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic

Association) requirements if planning to play sports in college

• Research career possibilities

Ninth Grade – Career Development

To accomplish these goals the following activities are available for students:• Freshmen and Parents Event• Holland Interest Inventory (Connected to the

dictionary of occupational titles) • School Counts• Speaking skills, organizational strategies,

information literacy, 21st century skills, and research skills all learned through Advanced Academic Literacies

• Personal Financial Literacy, 21st century career awareness, exploration, and preparation learned through Financial Literacy

Our goals for Tenth Grade students personal development are: • Continue to utilize the x2VOL/Naviance program to

track community service hours• Update co-curricular record• Continue to be involved and pursue leadership roles

different colleges and universities• Research and focus career opportunity goals

To accomplish these goals the following activities are available for students:• Attend college fair• PSAT administration and review• ASVAB administration to all tenth graders,

followed by review of results and career planning

• Sophomores and Parents night• Polytech presentation• School Counts

universities• Begin to research particular admission

requirements for different colleges and universities of interest

• Research and focus career opportunity goals, beginning to consider future major areas of study

• Begin to focus upon specific aspects of the different colleges and universities

• Develop an understanding of the college application process

Eleventh Grade – Career Development

To accomplish these goals the following activities are available for students:• Attend college fair• PSAT administration and review• Juniors and Parents night• Financial Aid evening presentations• School Counts• Attend after school presentation on college

visit planning• Begin or continue to visit colleges, making

sure to touch base with Admissions personnel

Eleventh Grade – Career Development

Activities Continued:• College meeting with counselor• Continue to evaluate the list of colleges and

universities, beginning to concentrate on specific criteria

• SAT/ACT administrations• College Board Subject Tests, as needed• Register for NCAA Eligibility Center, if planning to

participate in Division I or II sports
