El verbo 'To be' tiene una importancia especial en inglés. Se corresponde a los verbos españoles "ser" y "estar". Dependiendo del sentido de la frase deduciremos de cuál de los dos se trata.

Verbo “ to be”
Tiene algunos usos especiales distintos a sus equivalentes españoles.
Sirve para expresar la edad, en cuyo caso se traduce por 'tener':
How old are you?
Mary is 20 years old
Para expresar las sensaciones también se emplea el verbo 'to be' y equivale al 'tener' español.
También para hablar sobre el tiempo atmosférico.
It's windy
Conjugación del verbo to be forma afirmativa y negativa
En el Presente, las formas afirmativa y negativa se pueden contraer, mientras que en la forma interrogativa no. En el pretérito solamente la forma negativa puede contraerse.

She is not a man. ( she´s not)
It is not a chair. ( it´s not)
We are not students. ( we´re not)

Las formas contraídas suelen utilizarse en la conversación, pero no se usan de forma escrita salvo cuando el propio escrito tiene un carácter informal o refleja una conversación.
Forma Afirmativa y negativa de los verbos.

Estructura : Sujeto + verbo + nombre, adjetivo...
Ejemplos:
I'm happy. he likes ice cream I live in Egypt . . Hay que tener presente que a los verbos que se conjugan con la tercera persona del singular se le debe agregar una “s”
He plays the guitarShe writes a letterIt hits the floor
Para tener en cuenta : algunos verbos cambian su escritura cuando se les añade la “s” en la tercera persona del singular.
a. Verbos terminado en Y
Cuando un verbo termina en Y y lo presede una consonante se cambia por “ie” antes de que se agregada la s.

Sin embargo, cuando el verbo termina con “ y “ pero lo precede una vocal no cambia.

b. Verbos terminados en oCuando un verbo termina en “o” , la letra “e” se añade antes de agregar la “S”

Cuando un verbo terminan en un sonido sibilante como ch, s, sh, x or z , la letra “e” es añadida antes de la s.

Forma negativa
Dependiendo del verbo, hay dos formas para construir frases negativas:
1. Como regla general, para construir frases negativas necesitamos el verbo auxiliar "to do".Conjugamos el verbo auxiliar ("to do") en frases negativas. El verbo principal es en la forma infinitiva.
Estructura: Sujeto + verbo auxiliar ("to do") + auxiliar negativo + verbo principal + nombre, adjetivo...
Ejemplos
I don´t like ice cream. We don't live in Madrid. They don't have [haven't got] a car.
Nota:
1. Para las terceras personas del singular es necesario agrega “es” al verbo “ to do” Por ejemplo:
She doesn´t write a letterHe doesn´t cook pasta.It doesn´t work very well
2. Hay que tener en cuenta que los verbos "have" y "have got".Los dos verbos significan "tener". La única diferencia está el uso del auxiliar en el momento de hacer frases interrogativas o frases negativas. En la forma "have got" el verbo "have" ya hace de auxiliar, pero el verbo "have" sí necesita el auxiliar "to do" para construir la frase negativa e interrogativa.
