Text 1: Listen to Karl talking about himself, his best friend and his sister.

Hi! My name is Karl. I’m 15 years old and I live in Scotland. I like football and play every week. I can run very fast and I score a lot of goals. My football team is called River Rangers. I go to football practice on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and I play games every Saturday and Sunday. My favourite football player is Nick Jones and my favourite team is Highland United.

My best friend’s name is Adam and he lives in England. He’s 14 years old and he likes volleyball. He plays every day after school and he plays in his school team. He practises on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and plays games on Thursday and Friday. Adam’s favourite volleyball player is Jake Mitchell. Adam wants to take part in the Olympics when he’s older.

My older sister, Amy, is 21 years old and she lives in Paris. Amy loves cars, motorbikes and speedboats. She’s a mechanic. She fixes cars and motorbikes and after work she drives home in her sportscar. Amy’s favourite car is the Corvette. She wants to buy one when she grows older.

Text 2: Listen to a weather report on a radio show. Hi! I’m Ian Johnson and here’s today’s weather report. Well, for those of you who went out today, I don’t have to tell you that it was clear and warm with high temperatures in the late morning. Sliema had the highest temperature for the day; that is, 36 degrees Celsius. And that’s hot. I’m glad I’m working indoors today!

For those of you planning outdoor activities tomorrow, you can expect clear skies for most of the day with temperatures in the high thirties. However, things will change by Saturday evening as there will be a storm. We expect heavy rain showers over the northern part of the country bringing slightly cooler temperatures.

This rain will probably stop by Sunday morning. It will be partly cloudy for most of the morning with no wind. These clouds will disappear by the afternoon. Skies are going to be clear on Sunday night for those who want to watch the stars.

And that’s all for today’s weather.

READING 25 MARKS

Read the following passages and answer the questions on the main examination paper.

Text 1: An Enjoyable Day

Janet is an English tourist. She is on holiday in Malta. This is what she wrote in her diary yesterday.

30 JulyI woke up at nine o’clock. I didn’t have to get up and go to work. I turned over and slept until 9:30. Then I got up, had some coffee and toast, and read the newspaper.

At noon, I put on my swimming costume and went down to the beach to sunbathe. There were very few people on the beach. When it got too hot, I went swimming. For the rest of the time, I lay in the sun and listened to some music on my MP3 player. Then, I went back to my flat.

In the evening, I went out to meet some friends. We walked on the beach, and then had a long and delicious dinner on the terrace of my favourite seafood restaurant. I got back to the flat tired but relaxed. It was a perfect day.

Text 2: Dolphins

Dolphins are interesting sea-creatures. They are not fish but mammals and they can communicate by making sounds. Dolphins sometimes circle around boats or jump high into the air.

The smallest type of dolphin is 1.5 metres long. Other kinds of dolphin are much larger. Dolphins swim very fast and reach speeds of 50 kilometres per hour. Dolphins eat fish and squid and can live up to 25 years.

The dolphin’s greatest enemy is the shark but man is also a great danger. Every year a large number of dolphins die in fishing nets. Dolphins seem to like humans. There are stories of dolphins that saved swimmers from drowning.

Sea Parks sometimes keep dolphins in large tanks. Here trainers teach them to perform tricks. One common trick is jumping through hoops.
