SPAR renews Toyota Material Handling forklift order

to the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory, New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, as well as the Pacifi c Islands.

The 40,000 square-metre warehouse carries approximately 14,000 dry grocery lines and supports more than 300 grocery outlets, as well as operating a 3PL liquor operation on behalf of HLW (Bottlemart) and supporting a further 300 liquor outlets.

Dispatch and receiving operations amount to around 200 truck movements per day, Jason Crane said.

“We utilise third-party providers for chilled and frozen food storage (VersaCold) and for cross-docking in Sydney and Canberra.

“I cannot speak highly enough of TMHA and in particular Bob and Martin who were instrumental in putting together this most recent agreement with TMHA.

“Over many years we have developed an excellent relationship which has been built on mutual

respect, common goals and a knowledge that commitments made must be followed through.

“Signifi cantly, the commitments made by the sales team are met and exceeded and this is also

the case in relation to the service technicians who are on site every day to ensure our operations are not impacted by downtime.

“I consider TMHA to be a key business partner which means I can rest easy, assured that the supply and support of MHE equipment is in good hands which allows me to focus on key areas of the business.”

The SPAR Australia distribution centre has 12 new 1400kg payload BT RRE140 reach trucks and six new 1.8-tonne payload Toyota 8-FG18 forklift trucks.

SPAR reached the new agreement with TMHA (fi ve years with provision for a two-year extension) in November 2010 and commissioned the full 18-unit fl eet in May 2011.

SPAR’s Queensland warehouse manager Jason Crane said the company took into account key factors in renewing its agreement with TMHA.

“We’ve received tremendous support over many years from Toyota Material Handling and that helped us chose Toyota product once again,” he said.

“The two most important factors over the years have been the quality product TMHA provides and the excellent service support.

“We’ve developed an excellent relationship over many years with key personnel in Brisbane, including Bob Leck, the sales and rental manager, and Martin Gross, the major account manager.

“However, the equipment has to serve the purpose, and that begins with the quality and suitability of the units.

“We also took into account the feedback from our operators on comfort and ergonomic requirements.

“In addition, we considered environmental standards and specifi cally the emission performance of the LPG-fuel Toyota forklifts.”

Jason Crane said TMHA also made a very competitive offer for rental forklifts and service.

“TMHA already had a demonstrated and proven

sales and service back-up record with us, with quick response times and very minimal downtime of units,” he said.

“The TMHA focus on occupational health and safety mirrored SPAR’s high focus in this area, and we received great support in operator training.

“On the service side, TMHA has well-trained service technicians who have provided excellent support over many years.”

SPAR is one of only two major suppliers of independent supermarket operators on the eastern seaboard, supplying grocery products and retail support services to some 300 independent retail supermarkets, including the SPAR and 5 Star banner groups.

SPAR’s Acacia Ridge facility is the company’s only national distribution centre, supplying goods

“I consider TMHA to be a key business partner which means I can rest easy, assured that the supply and support of MHE equipment is in good hands which allows me to focus on key areas of the business.” A major grocery supplier has re-equipped its Acacia Ridge (Brisbane) distribution

centre after negotiating a fi ve-year agreement with Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) as the sole provider of reach trucks and gas-powered forklift trucks.

Australia’s number-one car company took the wraps off two new hybrid show cars, a driver-oriented sports-car concept, a Euro-inspired next-generation small car and an even tougher version of Australia’s favourite ute.

Toyota Australia’s senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said Toyota’s stand featured one of the most extensive line-ups of fresh vehicles ever shown by a single company at an Australian motor show.

“On its own, Toyota’s display - including fi ve new cars never before seen in Australia – was worth the entry fee,” Mr Buttner said.

“This raft of new Toyota cars provided car lovers with a ‘motor show within the motor show’ and confi rmed Toyota is fast approaching an exciting new period for the brand and for our customers in Australia,” he said.

The FT-86 II Concept is the clearest indication yet of the fi nal design for Toyota’s next sports car, which is expected in Australia in mid-2012.

Its free-revving boxer petrol engine, lightweight and muscular body, compact dimensions and low centre of gravity combine to deliver the best-possible power-to-weight ratio.

The Prius c Concept and Prius v fi ve-seat wagon are two new members of the Prius family that are being evaluated for the Australian market.

The go-ahead for local sales would see production versions in showrooms during 2012, alongside the Prius fl agship.

The Prius c Concept is the inspiration for an urban-friendly car aimed at young singles and couples who want a vehicle that is fun to drive, while being more affordable and having even better fuel economy than a Prius.

At the other end of the spectrum, Prius v is designed for young families with active lifestyles as well as fl eet customers looking for a car with added space and fl exibility plus exceptional fuel economy.

Toyota’s plans to expand the Prius family are based on its conviction that full hybrid technology is the key to the future of sustainable motoring.

Next-generation Yaris hatch has been completely redesigned with a more expressive, Euro-inspired look plus an even more spacious interior.

The new styling gives Yaris a more dynamic attitude along with a level of elegance and presence not normally seen in its segment.

Inside, designers and engineers have come up with ingenious solutions to provide more room, particularly for rear-seat passengers.

The new range will be available from Toyota dealers in the fourth quarter of this year.

An upgraded HiLux has new bodywork designed to ensure it will continue to dominate Australia’s ute landscape. New HiLux arrives from September.

Toyota also chose the motor show to announce the renewal of its sponsorship agreement as Premier Partner of the AFL for a further three years, reinforcing Toyota’s long-term commitment to the game at all levels.

Toyota’s grass-roots Good for Footy Program - through which Toyota and its dealers in Victoria, southern NSW and Tasmania support 25,000 players in 130 local clubs - will be expanded to provide concussion testing for players.

So far, more than $2 million has been provided through the Toyota Good for Footy Program with a further $1 million expected over the next three years. This fi nancial support also helps to improve grounds, fund renovations of clubrooms and purchase equipment, uniforms and medical supplies.

Toyota shines at the Australian International Motor ShowToyota has staged fi ve premieres of stunning new concept and production cars at the Australian International Motor Show in July.

The new Toyota 7-Series forklift range has the Toyota System of Active Stability (SAS) incorporating the active mast function controller and tilt levelling as standard equipment - a first for a forklift in this capacity range.

The new Toyota 7 Series has a 3 way closed loop catalytic muffler system, a double action hand operated park brake, neutral start safety switch and a memory tilt steering column. In addition, low wide entry steps with dual operator assist grips, low noise emissions and a high visibility overhead guard are all part of the standard offering.

The new Toyota 7-Series forklifts comprise 3 Models the 7FGU60, 7FGU70 and 7FGU80 Models in 6000kg, 7000kg and 8000kg capacities that replace the current 5-Series models.

The 7-Series forklift models are built at Toyota manufacturing facilities in the US, further increasing Toyota Material Handling Australia’s (TMHA’s) diversity of forklift sources.

The company’s comprehensive range of material handling equipment includes Toyota forklifts from Japan, BT Lift Trucks from Sweden and Raymond forklifts from the US.

TMHA’s Toyota Product brand manager, Jim Lobow, said the new 7-Series forklifts range 7FG/DU60, 7FG/DU70 and 7FGU80/7FDU80 offer Two power plants – a

reliable 4.3-litre 66KW overhead valve,V6 engine designed for LPG and Dual fuel systems or Toyota’s advanced 5.2 Litre 63KW OHV inline six-cylinder diesel engine,” he said.

“Both are matched to an automatic transmission with two-stator torque converter and electric shifter that delivers exceptional handling and smooth acceleration.

“An optional EZ pedal allows operators to change direction while leaving both hands free for steering and working the hydraulic controls.

“Optimal comfort and ease of operation has been maximised through Toyota’s highly responsive Centralised Hydraulic Power-assist System (CHPS), which controls tilt, lift, attachment, steering and braking functions with a simple and reliable single-pump design.

“Full hydrostatic power steering provides precise control for greater manoeuvrability and reduced operator fatigue.”

In addition, SAS offers automatic fork levelling at the press of a button on the mast-control tilt lever.

The operator can therefore work more efficiently and confidently, with less chance of damage to loads and storage racks.

Eureka Landscapes Pty Ltd is the primary landscape contractor for the massive North Lakes and Springfi eld Lakes projects.

The company commissioned two new Toyota Huski 5SDK-8 skid-steer loaders in May, bringing its Huski fl eet to eight.

Company director Darcy Collins bought his fi rst Toyota Huski in 1980, the year he founded the business, and has bought Toyota skid-steer loaders ever since.

“They’re highly reliable machines and they tend to only require scheduled maintenance,” he said. “Our operators also appreciate that reliability, as well the ease of use and the overall fi nish - they’re well-fi nished machines.

“As a company, we appreciate the long-term service support from Toyota Material Handling here in Brisbane and the continuity of dealing

with the earth moving sales manager, Paul Allen.”

Eureka Landscapes has grown in 31 years from a small landscape team to a company with more than 100 staff.

North Lakes (Stocklands project) and Springfi eld Lakes (Delfi n Lend Lease project) are the largest residential developments north and south of the Queensland capital.

Mr Collins said work on North Lakes began 10 years ago and has some years still to run, while Springfi eld Lakes began fi ve years ago and could, depending on land sales, run for another decade.

North Lakes alone has an 18-hole championship golf course, 80 kilometres of bikeways and walkways, 53 parks and eight sports fi elds.

The 650kg operating load Toyota Huski 5SDK-8 is one of six Huski skid-steer loader models offered nationally by Toyota Material Handling.

Models range from the compact 4SDK4 right up to the 900kg operating load 5SDK11.

The Huski 5SDK8 has a spacious cabin opening for smooth entry and exit, along with an easy-to-read instrument panel and low vibration and low fatigue control levers, providing outstanding operator comfort.

It has class-leading visibility and outstanding manoeuvrability.

Optional special features in the Toyota 5SDK Huskis include a push-button for ‘ride control’, to avoid fore/aft pitching when the loader is travelling.

Factory-fi tted options include hi-fl ow hydraulics, which increase hydraulic power by more than 40 per cent at the touch of a button. This allows for added versatility with specialised attachments such as slashers and large-capacity brooms.

Australian Pharmaceutical Industries’ Bundamba (Ipswich) Distribution Centre supplies Queensland and northern New South Wales.

The fl ood destroyed stock and the warehouse’s entire fl eet of battery-electric forklift equipment.

When it returns to full operation, the 19,000 square metre warehouse will have 31 state-of-the-art pieces of mobile forklift equipment – all supplied and serviced by Toyota Material Handling (QLD).

TMH (QLD) has a service technician permanently on site.

The centre has racking to nine metres and is temperature-controlled between 22 and 24 degrees.

Distribution Centre manager Brett Roy said Toyota

Material Handling had played a pivotal role in the massive task of recommissioning the centre.

“We returned to a Centre caked in mud – and all our material handling equipment ruined. We didn’t have a telephone system for 10 weeks, so we had to use mobiles,” he said.

Brett Roy said 50 vans operate out of the Centre, many delivering twice a day to metropolitan Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

“In addition, there are a dozen line-haul trucks which move stock to North Queensland and into northern NSW.

“The forklift equipment includes 14 BT OSE 100 low-level order pickers, 12 BT Refl ex RRE 140 reach trucks, fi ve Toyota 7-FBE15 forklifts and fi ve Raymond 5400 high order pickers.

“The equipment is state of the art, right down to the battery charging system TMH Qld has built for us,” Mr Roy said.

It has a second-shift function, battery electronic queuing system and auto watering system.

This equipment ensures that forklift operators select the most suitable battery – one that has fi nished charging and cooled down. The water levels are automatically topped up as the batteries charge.

Australian Pharmaceutical Industries (API) has a BT Orion LPE 200 medium-duty pedestrian pallet truck to move batteries at the charging points.

API was founded in 1910 and is now one of Australia’s leading health and beauty companies principally through its network of over 300 Priceline and Priceline Pharmacy retail outlets.

Nestlé sweetensice-cream deliveryOne of Australia’s leading food and beverage manufacturers is moving ahead with a new fl eet of Hino trucks chosen for its custom-built features and fl exibility.Global food and beverage company Nestlé has taken delivery of 20 Hino trucks to service its Nestlé Peters Ice Cream route business including smaller grocery and convenience stores.

The fl eet of Hino 300 Series trucks has hit the roads in Victoria and New South Wales.

Nestlé National Route Transport Manager Clinton Sanders said Nestlé saw an opportunity to improve its customer service using trucks which increased reliability, safety and driver comfort and reduced driver fatigue.

“We have had good, positive feedback from our customers and have enhanced the quality of ourproduct and reliability using this new truck fl eet for our deliveries,” he said.

The new Hinos on the Nestlé fl eet are 10 616 Auto models, seven 716 Auto models and three 714 Hybrid manuals.

They are fi tted with specialised freezer bodies produced in Italy by Therma Truck.

The sign-written trucks are custom-built with hand-held units for ordering and fulfi lling orders and invoicing on the spot.

With reduced fuel consumption and reduced emissions, the Hino Hybrids provide cleaner, more effi cient transport and are used for the city routes to obtain the greatest economy in the start-stop traffi c.

Clinton said the driver’s feedback on using

the trucks was very positive, with one of the experienced drivers fi nding that the advanced

six-speed automatic transmission reduced driver fatigue by the end of the day.

The ‘intelligent’ automatic has learning characteristics and can comfortably adapt to the driving style of the driver.

It also has fuel-saving torque converter lock-up in fi ve ratios - from second to sixth gear. It offers additional fuel savings by electronically switching the transmission to neutral when the truck is stationary and the brakes are applied.

“Strobe lights were also installed on the back of the trucks by Therma Truck to offer our drivers increased safety and visibility when unloading products,” Clinton said.

Nestlé has a number of iconic ice-cream brands including Drumstick, Heaven, Maxibon and Billabong.

The 2011 national apprentice intake means there are now 38 apprentices in the TMHA network, as well as 370 fully qualifi ed technicians.

TMHA’s National Training Facility at Moorebank (Sydney) recently hosted a two-day event for all the new apprentices and their branch mentors from across the country.

National service manager John Pearsall convened the event, which culminated in the apprentices receiving their tools of trade.

“Investing in the skills of our future technicians helps keep Toyota ahead of the other makes in customer service,” he said.

“But we also see it as part of our role as the forklift market leader – to set the benchmarks for technician skills and industry safety.

Mario Vella, proprietor of Bossley Bobcats, bought his fi rst Toyota Huski skid-steer loader when he founded the business in 1999.

He now has his fourth Huski, a 5SDK-8 model commissioned in 2009.

It is a ‘top-of-the-line’ specifi cation model with factory-fi tted air conditioning.

Mr Vella’s experience with Toyota Huskis recently saw him pass on valuable development information to Toyota engineers from Japan.

He bought his fi rst Toyota Huski after realising all the owner-operators he worked with used Huskis.

“I was working for a swimming pool excavator and all the skid-steer contractors he used had Huskis - they swore by them,” he said.

“I bought one in 1999 to found this company and I’ve never looked back. With a Toyota, you can’t go wrong. They’re powerful, comfortable and durable.

“I’ve had the latest one for nearly two years; it’s done just over 1300 hours - mainly landscaping work.

“On Fridays I have a regular job performing recycling work. For the rest of the week I could be working anywhere in the Sydney basin; as they say, have truck, will travel.”

Mr Vella said his Huski 5SDK-8 skid-steer loader is a pleasure to operate.

“The latest 5-Series is a good machine to drive. It’s powerful and comfortable, and it has those proven Toyota features of strength and durability. You never have any problem lifting loads, that’s for sure.

“As well as the machine quality, I’ve been impressed over the years by the level of service support from Toyota,” he added. “Area service rep Corey Denford and his technicians are always on call to assist.

“Earlier this year, they visited with the Toyota

engineers from Japan and I gave some feedback ‘from the operator’s viewpoint’,” he said.

Toyota Material Handling offers a comprehensive range of six Huski skid-steer loaders nationally, from the 4SDK4 to the 900kg-operating load 5SDK11 - the largest model in the 5SDK skid-steer loader range.

Customers can order the Huski skid-steer loaders from the factory with a range of control options, including ISO and ‘H’ control steering pattern (which does not require the foot pedals).
