uttered the tiniest of barks. Jay’sparents were standing by,watching.
“Is he for me?”“Yes, son. He is all yours,” his
mum said.“But you’ll have to help in
taking care of him,” his Papaadded.
“Of course!” Jay shouted, andpicking him up, rushed out yellinglike mad.
Settling inSoon, the new guest was given asaucer full of milk. He lapped itup, once again his tongue and tailmoving in perfect rhythm.
After taking four helpings, hecircled the room a couple of timesand promptly collapsed at mum’sfeet falling asleep instantly. Soonthe sound of gentle snores fi�lledthe room. Everyone roared withlaughter.
“What should we call him?”
“Naanu!” Jay replied. “No, Jay. You can’t call a dog
Naanu. Naanu was family.”“Papa, our new Naanu is also
family. He is my baby brother.”Jay’s parents looked at each
other. Papa patted him and said,“Okay, we’ll call him NaanuJunior.”
Naanu Junior became Jay’sshadow. Jay took himeverywhere, except to school. Hefed him, gave him a bath, tookhim for walks, played with himand even told him stories at night.In most stories, Naanu Juniorwould be the hero and, wheneverhis name was mentioned, hewould cock his ears and even waghis tail, if the tale was exciting.
A year has passed. Jay’s babybrother is a baby no more. He istall and sturdy and quite capableof carrying his ‘elder brother’ onhis back, just like Naanu Seniorused to.
