What can you choose for Strings?
There are four instruments that are included in
Strings class. These instruments are: the violin, the
viola, the cello, and the bass. Each one is very
important to strings class.
What makes all of these instruments similar? All four
of these instruments have four strings, and can all
be played with a bow.
What makes all of these instruments different? They
all range in size from big to small, and range in
sound from low to high. Let’s find out more about
each!
ViolinThe violin is the smallest instrument in the
string family, and therefore plays the highest.
The violin is played on the left shoulder, and is
distinctive in many orchestras as playing the
melody. The violin is very portable.

ViolaThe viola is the next largest instrument in the
string family, and therefore plays slightly lower
than the violin. The viola is also is played on
the left shoulder, and is as portable as the
violin while having a lower sound. The viola is
important in an orchestra for creating really
nice harmonies.
Viola Extra Listenings
CelloThe cello is the second largest instrument in
the string family. It always must be played in a
seated position, and it has an endpin that
allows it to be adjusted to meet any musician’s
needs. The cello is important for playing
incredibly beautiful, epic, or anything in
between.
Students have the option of using Freedom
Hill owned cellos during at school instruction,
and instruments do not need to be transported
weekly for class.
Cello Extra Listenings
BassThe string bass is the largest instrument in the
string family, and therefore plays the lowest.
The bass is one of the most versatile
instruments, being found in orchestras, jazz
bands, and the electric bass is seen in almost
every pop group.
Students have the option of using Freedom Hill
owned basses during at school instruction, so
instruments do not need to be transported
weekly for class.

Strings SummaryStrings is a fun activity for anyone, and choosing an instrument might be one of the
best decisions you make. You can choose to play violin, viola, cello, or bass in
Strings class.
Class occurs synchronously once a week for half an hour, and is part of your
specials rotation if selected. Asynchronous work will be assigned for the rest of the
week. This is a great opportunity to learn something new that does not require
screen time. 6th grade students can audition for middle school ensembles using
skills they learn at Forestville.
There are many options for getting an instrument, which can include renting an
instrument from a music store or receiving an instrument through FCPS. These
options will be discussed once you have signed up, but do not hesitate to contact
Ms Shamlian with any questions.
