Dear residents,

In light of recent national and global events, the Forest Lakes Board of Directors would like to make a non-partisan statement reflecting the values of diversity and inclusion in our neighborhood.

We believe Forest Lakes should be a place where all feel welcome, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, marital status, or national origin. We believe that as an increasing number of diverse residents choose our neighborhood, we become a stronger community.

As we’ve said many times in the past months, we are all in this together. Let’s keep finding our common ground. Thanks for helping make Forest Lakes a place where everyone feels at home.

Best regards,

The Forest Lakes Board of Directors [email protected]

Keeping in the LoopMOBILE HOME PARK REDEVELOPMENT PROPOSALAs you may have heard, a developer has purchased the existing mobile home park adjacent to Ashwood Boulevard, Route 29 and the Ashland sub-association of Forest Lakes. RST Development has submitted a proposal to build 362 units on that site, a combination of 1- and 2-bedroom apartments in three story buildings, and (8) 50-foot tall townhouse buildings, all with a road connection to Ashwood Boulevard.

Like any development, there is a long process of hearings and approvals before anything proceeds – and there will be lots of opportunities to provide input, as was done for Brookhill, Places 29, the bypass, and other projects of local interest.

The FLCA Board is beginning to dig into the details of this proposal, and the potential issues that likely will be involved: traffic congestion at the Ashwood intersection (especially in conjunction with added traffic from Brookhill), where and how children living there would go to school (given the overcrowding that already exists at Hollymead and Sutherland), light and noise pollution, stormwater management, and general aesthetics.

We would like to invite you to join a Forest Lakes owners-only virtual meeting sometime in August where we would review with you all of what we have learned, answer your questions, get your feedback on the issues that you see with this proposal – and most importantly determine how we want to move forward as a community in responding to the developer’s proposal. Among other things, we would expect to schedule a meeting subsequently where the developer would hear from the full community – but the FLCA Board believes that getting an overall position and approach to dealing with this proposal is an important first step,

If you are interested in learning more about this proposal, providing your input, and potentially being actively involved with this as it proceeds, pleaser reply to the Forest Lakes office ([email protected]) and include your name, address, email and phone number.

We will be in touch as we schedule this meeting. Scott Elliff, FLCA Board Member

Residents may not make reservations for other residents or put non-family members with their reservation. North pool time slots are for two hours, south pool time slots are for 1.5 hours. You may reserve one time per day at either pool and can be made up to 3 days in advance. Three lap lanes will be available at the north pool during regular pool hours by reservation only. Six lanes are available during the 8:00-9:00pm hour (through August 16th). You may reserve a 45 minute or 1-hour time slot; up to three people in a lane, all from the same family. To make a reservation for pool time or lap swimming, go to our website at www.forestlakes.com Amenities/Pools for the link.

Beginning at 5:00pm each day, you may make a reservation at either pool for the 8:00-9:00 hour, even if you have visited the pool earlier that day (through August 16th).

Adult Early Morning Lap Swimming – Reserved lap lane swimming will be available every Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 7:45-8:30am and from 8:45-9:30am at the South Pool. Adults may share a lane with other adult family members. To reserve a lane, go to our website at www.forestlakes.net Amenities/Pool.

FOREST LAKES TENNIS NEWS

FROM THE DESK OF JIM LABINSKI, DIRECTOR OF TENNIS

August, 2020

Dear Forest Lakes residents,

Did you know that playing tennis was rated as one of the safest, least risky, activities to partake in during the COVID-19 pandemic? It’s right up there with getting takeout food! It is my hope that all Forest Lakes tennis players are able to get some court time in, despite the Virginia summer heat. To this end, early morning court times now begin at 8 am at both North and South Courts. Evening hours have likewise been extended to 9 pm at both sites.

The Heat is On! You don’t have to play in the middle of the day to feel the heat. Even when playing earlier in the morning or later in the night Forest Lakes players must respect the heat and take precautions. I recommend playing in light-colored, breathable athletic wear. Get used to playing in a hat and sunglasses. Be sure to bring plenty of cold water, a towel, and wristbands (that’s a blatant plug for the Pro Shop merchandise) as you WILL be sweating! It’s a good idea to “pre-hydrate.” Begin this process the day before playing and continue to load up on the water the day of your reservation. If you expect a marathon of a match, consider supplementing the water with some Gatorade or other electrolyte drink.

Get sufficient sleep, and maintain a healthy diet including a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit. (Don’t be a slob--make sure your banana peels and apple cores find the trash bins! Please make sure your plastic water bottles, Gatorade bottles, and the flip lids of your tennis ball can find their way to the recycle bin in your house, or the one near the entrance to the Pro Shop.)

Guest Policy During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, no guests are allowed to play on the tennis courts. This is in line with the Forest Lakes Community Association rules regarding all Forest Lakes amenities. At the last FLCA Board meeting on July 22, the members voted unanimously to continue this no-guest policy until the pandemic is over.

Kourts App Update The new court hours are for all to see on the Kourts app. You must use the Kourts app to make a court reservation. You must be on the Player List to access the Kourts app. Send your name, cell phone number, and email to the FLCA office to start booking court time. If you are not going to make it to your court time, please cancel your court in a timely manner. Not doing so will result in 20 lashes with a wet pool noodle.

Court Maintenance 101 Nothing bums out a Forest Lakes tennis player more than showing up for their court time and see that it hasn’t been groomed by the previous group of players. After playing on the Clay Tech courts at North, players should brush and line their court. Hang up the court sweeps and liners on the fence, well off the ground.

Afternoon storms can play havoc with the tennis schedule. In some cases, the court could be playable in an hour or two after the rain—but you must rebook your court time. If water remains on the court, DO NOT attempt to remove the water with a drag broom! That moves the water, but also the good Har Tru material. Be patient and wait a little longer until the court dries out or reschedule for another day.

A Contest - Just For Fun I take my tennis equipment very seriously. And I take pride in my coordinated tennis outfits—right down to the shoes. Take a guess: How many pairs of shoes are in my current rotation? The person guessing the right number will win a pair of black, double-wide wristbands endorsed by Metallica drummer, Lars Uhlrich (a former top-ranked junior in his native Denmark). In the event of more than one person guessing the right number, here’s the tiebreaker: How many pairs of Nike shoes do I have?

Text or email me with your guess as to how many pairs of shoes I have in my current rotation, and just in case, how many pairs of Nikes do I have? The winner will be announced in next month’s newsletter.

Have you ever noticed how many different outfits I wear on the courts? At one time (in my bachelor days) I could go nearly a month before I needed to do laundry! (My wife Krista won’t let me do that anymore.) I’ll save the “how-many-outfits” contest for another time. Take care and see you on the courts!

Do you know a Forest Lakes resident who has demonstrated a selfless act of kindness or done something good for the world without expectation of anything in return? If you have a story to tell, please contact us at [email protected]. We will feature stories periodically in the newsletter as a reminder that kindness is what unites us.

A Hero Among Us

No one wants to get the call. The one that starts with “(fill in name of kid) is okay, but…”

My wife Lisa and I got that call on a Saturday afternoon in late June from our 19-year-old son Landon’s phone but when Lisa answered, instead of Landon a female voice asks “Is this Landon’s Mom? My name is Liz, and I’m with Landon. He fell off a longboard and the EMTs are on the way…”

Lisa and I immediately jump in the car to drive to Crozet where the accident happened. We have no idea who Liz is or how she knows our son, but she stays on the phone with us the entire time, answer-ing our questions, filling us in on what she observes, and helping us coordinate with the EMTs over the phone once the ambulance arrives.

New plan emerges. EMTs are taking Landon straight to the UVA emergency room. He has a huge gash in his head and is concussed. We hear Liz ask the EMTs “can I ride with you, so he has a familiar face nearby?” They agree. We change routes and start heading to UVA, getting updates from Liz in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Any of you who have felt the sense of helplessness when you’re somewhere else when your kid is in an accident know the value of this type of reassurance.

If you’ve been to the ER during Covid you know that things are different. Only one family member is allowed back with a patient, so Lisa went to stay with Landon and I stayed in the waiting area. Enter Liz. Based on her poise and composure, Lisa and I had expected someone much older. Turns out Liz and Landon graduated in the same class from AHS.

Over the next half hour, I started learning about Liz. Rising 2nd Year at UVA. Took a first aid course while working with kids at ACAC and applied what she had learned on Landon after his bloody fall. Interested in pursuing a career in medicine. I only learned a few days later that Liz is a Forest Lakes resident.

By the time this newsletter is distributed, Liz will soon be starting back at UVA, and Landon will be at Virginia Tech (wearing a helmet when he longboards). No one wants to get one of those phone calls…but thank you, Liz Wombacher, for being the one to make it.

Census Takers in Your Neighborhood

Census takers are hired from your area, and their goal is to help you and everyone in your home be counted in the 2020 Census. If the census taker who visits your home does not speak your language, you may request a return visit from a census taker who does speak your language.

Starting in early August, census takers will visit homes that haven't yet responded to the 2020 Census.

Census takers will wear masks and follow local public health guidelines when they visit your home. All census takers complete a virtual COVID-19 training on social distancing and other health and safety protocols before beginning their work in neighborhoods.

If no one is home when the census taker visits, the census taker will leave a notice of their visit with information about how to respond online, by phone or by mail.

How to verify that someone is a census taker

If someone visits your home to collect information for the 2020 Census, check to make sure they have a valid ID badge with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date. Census workers may also carry Census Bureau bags and other equipment with the Census Bureau logo.

If you respond online or by phone today, a census taker is less likely to have to visit your home to collect your response.
