UPCOMING EVENTS

The month of May in the youth ministry means one thing, and one thing only: Graduations.

There have been years when I’ve attended half a dozen or more different graduation ceremonies as May unfolded. As I watch our students receive their diplomas, the beginning of the end...well...begins.

Even before their receipt of the diplomas, these students have already selected the college

they will attend in the fall. Deposits have been paid. Roommates have been arranged. In some cases even the first semester’s classes have been registered. Their lives apart from Forest Hills are already underway.

But Forest Hills will always be home. No matter how far they roam (and one of them is going as far as Texas), no matter how long they’re gone, the congregation and ministries of this church have loved these students in such a way that this place and its people will always feel like home; like family.

Be sure to congratulate these students and their parents when you see them next! Wish them well and tell them you hope to see them during holidays and breaks. Their tenure as students in this church is coming to a close this month, but their status as family will never fade.

BILLY GRAHAM’S RESPONSE TO CONCERNS ABOUT NEW MUSIC IN THE CHURCHby Cannon A. McClain“I know this has been a controversial issue in many churches, and I don’t pretend to have all the answers, especially since I’m not particularly musical! But we have a singing faith, and God has given us the gift of music to praise him. The Psalmist declared, “With

singing lips my mouth will praise you” (Psalm 63:5). ...Remember: the old hymns you like were once new, and someone probably didn’t like them either! Sometimes, I’m afraid, a hymn can become so familiar to us that we sing it without even thinking about the words. But this is wrong, because then our singing becomes empty and meaningless. Don’t let this happen to you, but meditate on the words of the songs you sing, and even turn them into a prayer.”

In an effort to accommodate our growing Sunday School Classes at 11:00AM, it has become necessary to plant new roots in new locations beginning Sunday, April 29. We are inviting everyone to get connected and join us in growing closer to God in one of our available small groups.

Below is a description of the available classes that meet at 11:00AM and their new locations. Come see what all the fun is about and take that next step to grow with us!

THE GRATEFUL HEARTS CLASS // Room: 97Time: 11:00AM // Leader: Robin HeatonAges: 18+This class is committed to studying the specifics of the Bible and putting them into action in our lives. While we don’t all live out our faith in the same ways, we are willing to listen to and grow from each other through thought-provoking discussions of Scripture. Class members bring a breadth of knowledge and experience and represent various ages and stages of life. Currently the average age range is our class is 31 to 81, but we are open to all adults. Our emphasis is studying the Bible — we are in “school” to learn the Word — but our class members also engage in service to our community both as a group and individually.

THE FAITH CLASS // Room: 98 Time: 11:00AM // Leaders: Lyle & Linda Brooks Ages: 45+

This class discusses small group topics in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. This group shares and prays together.

11:00 AM SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES are playing musical chairs

AND THEY ARE SAVING YOU A SEAT!

THE FOUNDATIONS CLASS // Room: 99 Time: 11:00AM // Leader: Brandon Tolle Ages: 18+

This class seeks to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus by discussing the weekly sermon, studying the Bible in-depth through various mediums; such as, Bible book studies, book devotions, DVD lesson series, and praying for one another. Foundations class members engage in fellowship opportunities throughout the year and participate in community outreach and volunteer activities. Our class has become a true Wesleyan small group by cultivating meaningful relationships with each other through providing a circle of support and friendship, while honestly examining our own walk with God.

THE CHEERS CLASS // Room: Garden Room Time: 11:00AM // Leader: Various Ages: 30+

This class uses free flowing conversation-based studies featuring books from Rob Bell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and other Christian writers. Join our small group to explore faith, family and a meaningful relationship with God. Cheers is involved in outreach ministry serving the community. Group members enjoy fellowship opportunities like group outings and meals to build stronger relationships and share their faith journey. Cheers features people from various walks of life who enjoy thought provoking studies, fellowship and service.

Senior High Sunday School Class will now be meeting in Room 125 at 11:00AM. They have agreed to help us by relocating in an effort to help promote our safe sanctuaries policy. With these new changes in meeting locations all of the adults that meet at 11:00AM will be located outside of the Nursery, Children’s and Young Adult Wing of the Church.

DAD JOKESWhat rhymes with orange? No it doesn’t.

When does a joke become a dad joke? When the punch line becomes apparent.

How does Darth Vader like his toast? On the dark side.

Who was the roundest knight at King Arthur’s round table? Sir Cumference.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER FOR USING CHURCH TABLECLOTHS By Charlene McAleer

If you or your group chooses to use tablecloths in the ministry center closet, please do the following:

1. Check with Sondra in the church office to be sure they are available on your date.

2. Let her know the number of tablecloths you expect to use.

3. At the end of your event, place ONLY the tablecloths in the WHITE Tablecloth hamper in the kitchen.

4. CALL Joy Hall from the UMW to let her know dirty tablecloths need to be picked up and laundered. Failing to do this results in finding stains and mildew on our lovely new tablecloths when they are discovered later. You may even let her know in advance of the event if you prefer. 478-474-9807 (her number is posted on the top of the hamper).

Please do not place dirty towels or other items in the tablecloth hamper. There is a separate GREEN hamper for those items. Thank you for helping us maintain a service to all.

With Mother’s Day being on the second Sunday in May, we are adjusting our schedule a little this month. We invite you to join us for our One Step service on a special THIRD SUNDAY this month on SUNDAY, MAY 20 AT 6:00 PM at our Ridge Campus. We will have great music, preaching, and as always…snacks! Come casual for a great night of worship and fellowship.

COME TO THE GARDENBy Carolyn Hurley

Our garden group meets in the Garden Room this month on MAY 27 AT 6:00 P.M. to share ideas, a brief devotion, snacks and plenty of laughter as we look at what to do in a southern garden during the month of June. Whether you are a pro in the garden, or have always wanted to learn a few beginner’s tips about gardening, we would love to have you join us.

A HUGE THANK YOU Special thanks goes out to Sheri Allen and her entire team of volunteers who have made our Community Cafe experiences this year so wonderful. There is always someone with a smile to take your money, serve you yummy food, beverage and dessert. After you leave, there is always someone to clean up too. Without all these faithful volunteers, we would have to do the dishes! In all sincerity, Forest Hills offers our gratitude to God for the gifts and sharing of our Community Cafe team. You are simply the best.

AROUND THE CAMPFIREBy Chip Greene

The 50th anniversary celebration for Troop 170 was a huge success. We had about 135 people in attendance, including Eagle Scouts from as far back as 1970’s that were part of the troop and Eagle Scouts from as far back as the 1940’s and 1950’s that were later scoutmasters and assistant scoutmasters for Troop 170. We also had eight of the 18 scoutmasters in the history of the troop attend along with numerous assistant scoutmasters and troop committee chairmen.

The outdoor trip for the troop this month will be hiking at Brasstown Bald for our new scouts with the older scouts hiking a portion of the Appalachian trail in preparation for our summer trip to the Philmont High adventure base in Cimarron, New Mexico. The success of the troop continues to be the monthly camping and outdoor excursions, which the youth leadership plans every year. Thanks to FHUMC for their continued support as our charter organization.

BLESSINGS & CELEBRATIONS By Teresa Edwards

The month of May sweeps in bringing with it the sweetness of life. So many blessings and celebrations drop into our laps in these spring days: graduations, Mother’s Day, completion of a school year and the welcoming of summer. Truly our hearts exalt in all the gifts of life we see around us.

As people who are blessed, let us not take for granted God’s grace and bounty in our daily world. How often we turn to God in prayer when we find ourselves in trouble! How much more should we turn to God in prayer and blessing while soaking in the richness of this life we know!

So this month comes to us as a month of blessing, offered and received, from a Savior who loves us more deeply than we can imagine.

If you would like to honor God and give thanks for the blessings of your life, it would be such a gift for me to meet with you to share a conversation of thanking, praising and honoring the Lord whose love is truest blessing. Speaking our celebrations in prayer and holy conversation makes all of them even more real. As the old hymn says: “Count your blessings name them one by one, count your blessings see what God has done.”Feel free to contact me at 478-477-1161, ext. 105 to share in this time of intentional blessing and prayer. May God bless each of you with great joy and life these May days.

Back packministryby Brenda Lambert

Can you believe school will be out May 25??? We have had a wonderful year. I can not begin to thank each and every volunteer who has given of their time to feed hungry children in our community. We are ending the year serving 1,600 children in 22 schools in Bibb, Monroe, and Twiggs Counties. The summer will be a time to clean the house, wash the bins, regroup, and plan for the next school year. Please be in prayer for our schools, students and their families.

This is a FREE MEAL followed by brief addresses by the elected officials of FHUMC (finance, trustees, staff parish, administrative council). This is a great way for us to fellowship and stay informed about what God is doing through us.

STATE OF THE CHURCH

WE’RE TAKING ONE STEP TOWARDS BEING GOOD NEIGHBORS!On Saturday, April 28, over 90 of us have volunteered to be Good Neighbors by participating in the Rebuilding Macon Workday. We will paint, repair, clean, and generally serve our elderly neighbors as we seek to be Jesus hand and feet in our community. Please pray that everyone involved will receive a blessing this day!

IS FINALLY HERE!

Mer-Serve students work 3 hours in Backpack house stocking and packing on a Saturday morning. We are so grateful our college students want to volunteer.
