Whilst clearing out my late father's house a few years back I came across an unusual item of sailing in-terest. It was a photograph of the Americas Cup legend Endeavour and signed by the crew, including the then Captain, Ned Heard.

Printed by a company called Beken & Sons and dated October 1937, the photo-graph aroused my curiosity as to how it managed to end up in the attic of an old cottage in Donaghadee.

I had never seen the photo-graph before in all my time and had most definitely never heard it mentioned by anyone in the family.

So I decided to try and find out as much as I could about this famous yacht and whether there was any local connection to my family. The internet is a wonderful thing and was able to provide me with loads of information on the Endeavour, the Americas Cup etc etc, but nothing of any local interest was forthcoming. An extended family member also pro-vided a little interesting snippet of information con-cerning my late maternal grandfather ‘Robert Walker’ who I know was a

'man of the sea' having served in the Merchant Navy and then plying his trade as a fisherman in the period just after the second World War. This information suggested that the Endeavour may have come into Belfast at some point for repairs and that my grandfather may have helped pilot the yacht in and received

the signed photograph as a souvenir of this occasion.

Therefore I was wondering if anyone can remember if the Endeavour did indeed visit Belfast at any time around 1937 or indeed if anyone else has any theories or insight into this unique photograph.

SQUIB

Sailability Fleet - Squib, Skud & Access

What a fabulous year we had in 2009, the year started fairly quietly last April but soon we were rushed off our feet by events.

Our first weekend visit by sailors from Scotland and the Isle of Man happened, this has now been adopted as the Sail-ability Celtic Rally and hope-fully will become an annual event.

We also changed our sailing group meets from Sunday mornings to our current Wednesday evening sessions. This has proved extremely successful and as a result we were able to recruit quite a few new helpers with sailing experienceIn June our first daytime group came from Mitchell House School in Holywood, this was a return visit follow-ing the success of 2008 and in

August the second group to visit were young people from The Lighthouse Trust summer scheme, again another positive event and we hope they come to visit again this year. Then the Tall Ships visited Belfast; we were invited by Belfast City Maritime Commit-tee to play our part in this spectacular event. The support we received from people who had not previously been involved with BLS was phenomenal. I can’t thank and praise them enough. As a result of the Tall Ships event we were contacted by a number of groups and organi-sations that work with young people with learning difficul-ties and Autism.

On one evening we had over 50 people arrive to try sailing/boating for the first time. Even so we still managed to get everyone who wanted to

enjoyable sailing opportunities to people with a disability.

Common Seals on the River Bann

inland and still attracting cargo ships of up to 2000 tones and 4 metre draft.

Substantial public jetties have been established along the river following major invest-ment by Waterways Ireland, local councils and private op-erators opening up the river to boating on an unprecedented scale. Recent improvements by Waterways Ireland have in-cluded new navigational signage and dredging on the non-tidal part of the river.

Wildlife Haven - The Bann

Page 14Issue 3

The Bann is the longest river in Northern Ireland. It begins life in the Mournes and unusu-ally flows north for almost its entire length, passing through Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the British Isles, and Lough Beg before entering the Atlan-tic on the north coast of Ire-land. Five other major rivers flow into Lough Neagh but the Bann is the only one flowing from the lough. On its 85 mile journey to the sea the river passes through, or close to, the towns of Banbridge, Porta-down, Toome, Portglenone, Kil-rea and Coleraine and through

some wonderful and varied scenery ranging from open farmland to amenity forests and tidal estuary. Navigational improvements completed in Victorian times still connect Lough Neagh to the sea by means of 5 sets of locks which allow seagoing boats, with a draft of 1 metre, to pass along a stretch of 60 kilometres and up the 12 metre difference in lough and sea levels into Lough Neagh. At Coleraine on the es-tuary a dredged and well-marked channel lead to a commercial port in the heart of the town some 8 kilometres

Page 15: Foresail News Sheet Issue 3

None of the recent changes on the river have had the slight-est impact on the abundant wildlife that lives on, in and along the river and it remains a fantastic and diverse wildlife corridor running almost the entire length of Northern Ire-land.

In the tidal estuary otters, seals, porpoise and foxes can be seen daily. The skies and mudflats are full of all types of wading birds throughout winter and summer. Swans, many varieties of ducks, geese and gulls, oystercatchers, dunlin, herons, cormorants, merganser and curlew are all common and buzzards and avocet have been sighted increasingly frequently. Below the surface salmon, trout, eels and flounder are the native species tempting the anglers. Upstream and away from the salty tidal estuary the wildlife differs somewhat with kingfishers, dippers, moorhen

and coot being added to the bird varieties and perch, bream and pike to the aquatic species. Along the banks are specimen trees and rare plants in a historic landscape.

The wildlife shares the river with canoeists, oarsmen, fishermen, water-skiers and pleasure boats but the river remains unbelievably tranquil and totally uncrowded for most of its journey to the sea.

Only two commercial pleasure craft currently operate on the Bann.

They are River Bann Cruises “The Lady Sandel”, named after a 13th century Norman family who controlled the area, which operates from Coleraine to the estuary and towards Kilrea and Con Law’s “Maid of Antrim” which operates on Lough Neagh and towards Portglenone.

Situated on the magnificent River Bann, in the heart of Northern Ireland’s premier tourism area of the Causeway Coast, the busy town of Cole-raine is ideally located for the operation of a river based tourist facility. Just such a tailor-made opportunity has now arisen with the popular River Bann Cruises business, includ-ing their 60 seater cruise vessel “The Lady Sandel”, being offered for sale as a going concern. As the sole commercial operator on this 25 mile stretch of water the current operation was established in 2006 and has to date carried over 18,000 passengers on its seasonal operation.

Unrestricted public access to an unspoiled tidal estuary and navigable inland river has been facilitated by the construction of many new jetties along the riverside by Waterways Ireland, Coleraine Borough

Council and private enterprise over the last decade.

Wonderfully varied wildlife, stunning scenic beauty, Victorian engineering achieve-ments and centuries of unique history are best appreciated on a relaxing cruise along the river from a highly visible Council owned jetty just a short walk away from the centre of Coleraine.

Adjacent to the disabled friendly access jetty is a public car park, with dedicated parking spaces, and a toilet block within a landscaped public riverside park.

The current operator, who established the business and was instrumental in lobbying for many of the facilities now in place, wishes to retire and is

willing to pass on his unrivalled knowledge of the river to prospective purchas-ers. The vessel currently in use

has been improved and meticulously maintained to exacting MCA standards by the owner, a former shipmaster, since it was located and purchased in England and transported to Northern Ireland by him.

The vessel’s Class V passenger certificate for

60 passengers and 2 crew for Category C waters has just been renewed.

Carrickfergus Marina - Triumphant at Twenty-five!

As it celebrates its 25th

anniversary in 2010, the newly refurbished Carrickfergus Marina has recently won more prestigious accolades for its high quality facilities and service provision. Despite having received awards on an annual basis since opening, the fact that the criteria for each award becomes more demanding year on year and that there is increased competition for the awards, these are important awards highlighting Carrickfergus Borough Council’s commitment to ensure the highest quality service provision at the Marina, as in all its facilities.

5 Gold Anchor Award

Carrickfergus Marina was also recently judged by the Yacht Harbour Association as successfully meeting the standard set for the prestigious, 5 Gold Anchor Award, the highest standard achievable.

The Gold Anchor Award scheme operates on an international level, with marinas in both Europe and America competing for Gold Anchor accreditation. This endorsement identifies Carrickfergus Marina as an officially recognised ‘world class’ facility and ranks Carrickfergus Marina on an equal footing with many of the leading marinas throughout the world.

The judging criteria included not only infrastructure, investment and facilities but also quality of customer care, contribution to the community, hosting and organising major international events and youth training, all in a safe and healthy environment.

It is with great pride that Carrickfergus Marina Staff accepted this highly prestigious award and they look forward to not only maintaining its award-winning services but also to welcoming you ashore especially in this very special 25th year.

Sail NI Boat Sales and Services - ‘Our focus is excellence’

In the UK we are currently hearing a lot of discussion on the merits of boat shows and where and when they should be held. The Earls Court London boat show is still being talked about although it was not held in December 2009.

The Southampton show in September 2009 and the London Excel show in January 2010 both ended with very poor sales results. Many excuses abound, the economy, the weather, the location, the cost of exhibiting, transport, etc etc. The bottom line is that the extreme lack of sales in the last period has had a severe detrimental effect on investment in boat shows.

We are hearing of another major show in May 2011 in Liverpool. It is difficult to see, in the current climate, how this could be viable.

The situation in Ireland is even worse with the only Irish Boat show, the 2010 Dublin show being cancelled through lack of enthusiasm.

May be its time to think of a different format, a new image, or a new approach.

The organisers of the London Excel and the Southampton Boat shows are holding a series of seminars to help them formulate a programme for their shows in the future.

They are considering dates, venues and have announced the inclusion of the “Outdoor Show” within the London Excel Boat show for next year. They are obviously trying to increase the appeal to a wider audience and get back the attendance numbers of the past. (This could also be the result of the increasing size of the Excel centre and how to fill it)

How about a boat show in the North of Ireland, say alternate years with the Dublin show? We have excellent facilities in the North, a large boating population and with the new road links to the South of the country easy access.

We would be interested in your comments

Since our inception in November 2008 we have strived to uphold our motto

‘Our Focus is Excellence’.

In this modern age so many Brokerage companies are internet based and there is no denying that this is a huge platform to

promote boats of all shapes and sizes.

We also embrace this media by advertising with the main Power, Yachting & Commercial / Workboat internet companies in Europe as well as our own website www.sailni.co.uk.

However we have always felt that colossal as the ‘World Wide Web’ is, there is more to brokerage than relying purely on the internet.

For this reason we have an office and showroom based in the prestigious 5 Gold Anchor and European Blue Flag status Carrickfergus Marina Complex.

Alongside these excellent facilities in Carrickfergus, Sail NI also works very closely with our Partner Broker ‘Sovereign Yacht Sales’ in the Cork area. This means all our brokerage boats are displayed at both the Carrickfergus and Kinsale, Cork brokerage offices. Providing Sail NI the great advantage of not just one office readily available for potential clients but two, covering All Ireland.
