THE FORERUNNERS E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 0
Digital publication for the Parish of Newington Bagpath with Kingscote
WELCOME tothe Septemberedition of The Forerunner .
WELCOME
The Forerunner Editing Team(Elin Tattersall, Pauline McTear & Alice Cooper)
Thank you for responding to our requests for articles for our
Community Corner. Any style of contribution is welcome- from
your favourite recipes to historic information, puzzles, prose
and poems. For example, you may be holding a Macmillan
Coffee Morning during September, so it would be great to
hear about how it went.
You will also spot a ‘Celebrating’ section in this September
edition and we invite you to let us know of any special
occasion being celebrated by your family. Also, if you know of
anyone moving into the village let us know so that we can
mention and welcome them.
All copy for the next edition should be sent to Elin
Tattersall by the 20th of the month (01453 860182).
Little did I think in March that we would live
through over four months of no services in our
church buildings. The good news is that
September brings the return of Services to St
John the Baptist.
Although open, church feels very different,
with the keeping of social distance, the
wearing of masks and the use of hand
sanitiser. As one of the safety measures we
are not yet able to sing, although to hear the
organ play once again is a blessing!
Weddings and baptisms can take place in
church with the limitation of just 30 people
present. Many wedding couples have decided
to continue with their wedding service within
these restrictions and have planned their large
wedding party celebrations next year!
Over the past few months, the clergy have
taken funerals at the crematorium or in the
churchyard, but funerals can now take place
in the church building under the same
number limitations as weddings and
baptisms.
The Annual Parochial Church meeting, which
usually takes place in March is now taking
place in September. The APCM is an
important meeting that enables our Parish
church to function effectively and where
Churchwardens and members of the Parochial
Church Council are elected. If you are on the
church electoral roll you can attend and vote
at this meeting. If you would like to know
more about the APCM please contact me.
VICAR'S LETTER
Although we seem to gradually be returning
to a sort of normality, a new normal in daily
life, this is still an extraordinary time and we
should remind ourselves that the virus is still
active and we are not yet ‘out of the
woods’. As we come to autumn and lead up
to Christmas, we are still a long way from our
new normal and we need to continue to play
our part in keeping each other safe.
In John’s gospel, Jesus commands us to love
one another. We are getting used to a world
of wearing a face mask, using hand sanitiser
and keeping our distance from each other. By
this we show love for one another, we show
love for our neighbour. In these strange times
let us continue to keep each other safe.
With every blessing,
Rev’d Caroline

BAGPATH COMMON ASH TREES
Ash dieback is affecting vast numbers of trees
across our woodlands and Kingscote Parish
Council is clarifying with Cotswold District
Council how to deal with Ash trees on
Bagpath Common, plus who is responsible for
managing and funding any removal necessary.
The parish council will keep parishioners
informed and is planning to hold a public
meeting when more information becomes
available. The full post from the parish
council is available here.
KEY DATES
We welcome your contributions to this, our

Tattersall (01453 860182).
As a follow up to last month’s article about
the oldest grave in Kingscote churchyard,
Sebastian Cooper explores the will of Edith
Maning in 1629:
In the article about the gravestone of Roger
Maning in last month’s issue of The
Forerunner, I mentioned that Roger was the
main beneficiary under the will of Edith
Maninge of Kingscote who died on 3rd June
1629. This month I thought it would be
interesting to include an abridged version of
her will as it offers us a glimpse into the lives
of our Kingscote predecessors, their
relationships with their relations and
neighbours and the value they bestowed on
their property and other assets.
In the name of God Amen. I Edith Maninge of ye

LOCKDOWN EXPERIENCES
If you haven’t yet sent your thoughts on
lockdown in Kingscote and Bagpath to Seema
Bowers, there is still time, as Seema will be
revisiting submissions at the end of
September and compiling them into a book of
our parish’s recollections. Any format is fine -
prose, facts, diary entries, pictures, photos,
poems. Maybe you moved to the parish during
lockdown, or celebrated a special occasion in
a very different way. How did you manage to
communicate with loved ones? What were
the challenges of lockdown and what did you
appreciate more?
Please send your contributions to Seema
Bowers (photos and pictures in Jpeg format
please).
WOOD CHIPPING MULCH
After a summer of stump grinding we have a
surfeit of wood-chipping mulch. Great weed
suppressant. Free to a good home. Please
help yourselves – it is just inside our driveway,
on the left under the yew tree.
Vivienne and Godfrey, Kingscote House.
WINDY CORNER
Thank you to the Giddings family for their
work on renovating the bench at Windy
Corner, which now looks as good as new. John
Giddings originally erected the bench there in
the 1990s as a place for people to rest, chat
and wait for the mobile library which, in those
days, visited Bagpath. Thanks also to all those
from Bagpath who maintain the area.
WEDDING
Congratulations to Charlie and Roxy
Knights who were married in Angersleigh,
Somerset on 15th August. They were originally
planning a May wedding in Kingscote, but it is
great to know that they could put in place
secondary plans to enable the wedding to
take place and for their families and loved
ones to attend.
60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
And, for tips on achieving a long and happy
marriage, we need look no further than
Bagpath as, on 20th July, John and Ann
Giddings celebrated their Diamond Wedding
Anniversary, receiving a card from the Queen.
In fact John and Ann are the third generation
in the Giddings family to have received
congratulatory messages from the Queen on
60 years of marriage: John’s grandmother and
his mother both received telegrams on the
occasion of their Diamond Wedding
Anniversaries. What a great track record!
CELEBRATING
LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS
Jutta Tubbs spotted a letter in The Times,
from David Brice, Commodore in the Royal
Navy, which is relevant to the forthcoming
Last Night of The Proms, to be aired in
September.
In the letter Commodore Brice states
‘Between 1807 and 1869 the Royal Navy
conducted a very difficult maritime campaign
against the Atlantic slave trade; it was an act
of national intent. Without Britannia ruling the
waves, this successful campaign could not
have been attempted. According to one
exhibition held at the Royal Navy Museum,
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, between 1807
and 1860 the Royal Navy West Africa
Squadron, “seized approximately 1,600 ships
involved in the slave trade and freed 150,000
Africans who were aboard these vessels.” The
navy’s work, though, came at a price: between
1830 and 1865 alone, approximately 1,587 men
died in the West Africa Squadron, succumbing
to a variety of causes, including disease, killed
in action and accidental death.’ Commodore
Brice concludes that ‘This campaign should
be a cause of national pride.’
