PRIMER RESIDUE TRACESWhen a weapon is fired, gunpowder residues are propelled toward thetarget. Primer and gunpowder residues are blown back in the direction of theshooter. In most cases, trace amounts of these residues aredeposited on the shooter’s firing hand. The detectionof these trace residues can give valuableinformation regarding whether or nota particular individual has recently

fired a weapon. The collection ofprimer residues deposited on thehand of the shooter—normally on thethumb web and the back of the hand holdingthe weapon, is accomplished by swabbing thoseareas with plastic cotton tips that have been moistenedwith a 5 percent nitric acid solution. Determining whether ornot a particular person has fired a weapon is normally accomplishedby measuring the amount of barium and antimony on the suspect’s hands.Atomic absorption spectrophotometry analysis has proven to be verysuccessful in identifying these trace residues.

The AAA processdetects the presenceof barium, antimony,copper and lead.

Barium andantimony arepresent in theprimers ofmost UnitedStates-madeand someEuropeanbrands ofammunition, while copper and lead particlesoriginate from cartridge cases and projectiles. Upon detonation of acartridge, these elements are deposited on the shooter’s hands. The AAA100kits are used to swab the entire surface of the suspect’s hands (see photos

left). The samples taken are then submitted for laboratory analysis.Due to the extreme sensitivity of atomic absorption analysis, the swabs,preservation tubes, nitric acid solution and container must be free fromcontamination.

gUnPoWDER PARTIClE DETECTIon KITThe distance of a firearm discharge is an important factor in crime scenes.The close range firing in a suicide, murder or other crime involving firearmscan be determined by the detection of powder particles. A study of thescorching, blackening and powder patterns on the object or victim at thecrime scene can tell much about the distance and angle of firing. Dark ringsaround the bullet hole due to abrasion or dirt can be confused with charringand blackening resulting from discharge. Small gunpowder particles,however, may go unnoticed if a sensitive method is not used. Therefore, achemical test for the nitrite (burned particles) of gunpowder will be very usefulin a study of crime scenes involving firearm discharges—both on the victimand the criminal.

The two-step reaction involved in the formation of orange dye is known asdiazotization and coupling. It is this combination of reactions that is specific

for nitrite ions. The No. GPD100 kit provides a sensitive and specific method for the detection of nitrite particles at the crime scene. The sensitivity ofthe test eliminates the possibility of omission and error attending visualexamination of the crime scene. By utilizing this kit, it is possible to distinguish

between close-range and distant firearm discharge. Close-range firing andapproximate distances can be determined by the powder tattooing on thebody or clothing of the victim. After the development of nitrite particles, testpaper should be photographed for a permanent record of particle dispersion.

Seminal Fluid —Te Acid Pospatase Test This test is considered to be the most conclusive, non-spermatozoa test forthe presence of semen. The content of this enzyme is from 20 to 400 timesgreater in human semen than in any other fluid. This fact makes it unlikely thatanother material would test positive and give false results.

The reagents for determining the presence of acid phosphatase in suspectedstains are sealed in glass ampoules to ensure their integrity and long life.Preliminary examination before testing should be accomplished withlongwave ultraviolet lights or an alternate light source such as BLUEMAXX™.

The reagents should not be applied directly to suspected stains, thuseliminating possible contamination in subsequent laboratory tests of therecovered evidence. The “contact” method, i.e., wetted filter paper is touchedto the suspect area and the reagentis then applied to the contact paperonly.

In many instances,blood prints are not visible dueto background color or theweakness of the blood print itself.To render these latent bloodprints visible, the BT001 offersan extremely sensitive method

Field tests of dried stains at the crime scene are often essential in locatingand making preliminary presumptive identification of blood. Through theutilization of various kits and materials manufactured by SIRCHIE, this initialtesting becomes a routine function for the investigator. Tests for identifyingblood are performed using a non-destructive technique that will not interferewith subsequent testing performed by the crime laboratory. The most widely

accepted field tests for blood involve three different chemical processes;phenolphthalein, leuco-malachite green and luminol. Each has its ownparticular characteristics.
