Location & Transportation Pavia is a small town (about 100K citizens) located in North Italy, 30 km south of Milan. It is on the railway connecting Milano to Genova and very close to the highways connecting Milano to Genova (A7) and Torino to Piacenza (A21). Students can reach Pavia by plane, by train or by car:

By plane Students can fly to one of Milan's three airports: Linate (50 km from Pavia), Malpensa (90 km from Pavia) or Orio al Serio (70 km from Pavia).

Linate If you arrive at Linate airport, you can:

• Take a bus to Milan Central railway station (Stazione Centrale) or a taxi, (which is however an expensive choice, about 100€). Both alternatives will take about 30 minutes. From Milan's Central railway station, you can take a train to Pavia. The Milan-Pavia train ride takes 30-40 minutes (for tickets, see: http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en).

• Take the Malpensa Express train (http://www.malpensaexpress.it/en/), that leaves every 30 minutes to Cadorna station in Milan (duration: 40 minutes). From Cadorna station, you can take the underground (green line) to Milan Central station.

• Take a Shuttle Bus (http://www.malpensashuttle.it/en/index.html) to the Central Railway Station. Tickets can be bought in the Airport hall near the exits to the bus lines.

• Take a Taxi to Milan's central station (an expensive option, about 100€) or directly to Pavia (about 170€).

Once you have reached Milan's Central railway station, take a train to Pavia (see: http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en). Moving and Parking in Pavia The town centre is relatively small, you can walk edge to edge in 15-20 minutes; it takes less than 10 minutes from the railway and bus station to the University (central buildings). When you arrive at the railway station you can get a bus (line 3 towards the town centre: it goes through Corso Cavour) or take a taxi (moving to a location in the town centre by taxy costs 6-10€). Moving by car is less easy than walking or using buses (bus ticket 1.20 € validity 1 hour - city lines only, availability at newsstands). Parking fares range from 0.60€/hour to 1.50€/hour, depending on the area (higher towards the centre). On Sunday, parking is free. On Saturday, it depends on the areas. To move around Pavia, you can use your bike. You can buy a second-hand bike in:

• Corso Garibaldi, 27a • Corso Garibaldi,55 (“Gigi Bici”) • Via Ambrogio da Fossano, 27

Accommodation One of the first problems to solve once in Pavia, will be finding a place to live. Pavia is a University town, and this has its pros and cons. You could find a room in one of the University Colleges or rent a room or a flat with your friends.

Colleges Today, living in college means being in the midst of a stimulating and creative cultural environment that has a long tradition in Pavia. Each of Pavia’s 20 colleges, that, in total, host approximately 2.000 students, has its own particular history. Colleges range from the two oldest institutions, Borromeo and Ghislieri, founded at the end of the 16th century, to the more recent ones managed by the Ente per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario (EDiSU). College life is not only study but also an opportunity to acquire a sense of belonging to an open community, one where academic achievements, traditional events, parties and sporting rivalries play a key role. Moreover, in the colleges students can build their first professional network. Anyone can access the colleges thanks to a parental-income based fee system, payment by instalments and educational merit entry criteria. Pavia boasts four traditional, merit-based colleges. These offer internal university courses where research is particularly valued:

• Almo Collegio Borromeo à www.collegioborromeo.it • Collegio Ghislieri à www.ghislieri.it • Collegio Nuovo (female) à colnuovo.unipv.it • Collegio Santa Caterina (female) à santacaterina.unipv.it

EDiSU (http://www.isu.pv.it) manages 11 colleges and 1.500 seats at:

• Collegio Fratelli Cairoli (male) à https://www.collegiocairoli.it/it/ • Collegio Gerolamo Cardano à https://www.collegiocardano.com • Collegio Castiglioni Brugnatelli (female) à http://www.collegiocastiglionibrugnatelli.it • Collegio Plinio Fraccaro (male) à http://www.collegiofraccaro.it • Collegio Camillo Golgi à http://golgi.edisu.pv.it • Collegio Benvenuto Griziotti à http://griziotti.edisu.pv.it • Collegio Lazzaro Spallanzani (male) à http://www.collegiospallanzani.it • Collegio Lorenzo Valla à https://www.collegiovalla.com • Collegio Alessandro Volta à http://www.collegiovolta.org

There are four private colleges in the city:

• Collegio Don Bosco (male) à http://www.salesianipavia.it • Collegio Maria Ausiliatrice (female) à http://www.collegiofemminile.pavia.it • Collegio Marianum (female) à http://www.collegiosantacaterina.it • Collegio Sant'Agostino (male) à https://collegiosantagostinopv.wordpress.com

Housing Despite being the most popular accommodation among students, the Colleges are not the only choice. Indeed, you can decide to look for a flat for your own or to share with others. Sharing a flat with your friends will be a very fun experience. But be careful, because renting out is a very lucrative activity here in Pavia: unfortunately, high prices very often do not mean the same quality… It can be difficult to find good accommodation at fair prices. To save time you can go to an estate agent's, but this solution will be very expensive. We strongly suggest contacting the Centro Assistenza Studenti – a service in collaboration with UNIPV.

• Centro Assistenza Studenti The Centro Assistenza Studenti finds accommodation for incoming students prior to their arrival. The importance of making accommodation arrangements before coming to Pavia cannot be stressed enough, as looking for accommodation after arrival may be a very hard and frustrating experience. Because of the large number of students that come and study in Pavia every year, the student accommodation market is a very difficult one. Prices are higher than in other towns and finding a room just before the start of the academic year is almost impossible, as places have already been taken by students during the summer months. However, some students may prefer to look for accommodation on their own. This is an option that certainly gives them the opportunity to find the accommodation solution that matches their requirements. It must be noted that in this case they would have to spend a few days in a hotel, as the Centro Assistenza Studenti cannot provide temporary accommodation until the student finds a place to live. For further information, you can directly contact the Centro Assistenza Studenti:

• Renting a Room If you are unable to find a place in halls of residence or if you prefer not to go there, you can look for a room privately. Many flats are rented out to students and rooms are usually available. You can find advertisements on university notice boards. Also check websites such as Bakeca: http://pavia.bakeca.it/, Cercacasa: http://cercacasa.sostudenti.it, Easystanza: www.easystanza.it, or specific magazines that you can find for free around the city (Attico, Il Tetto, Cercaffari…) or you can buy Passaparola at the news agents. Rooms can be single or double and usually cost from € 200 to € 300 per month.

Pay attention to the voice “spese” (meaning additional costs such as light, gas, heating) mainly when there are “spese condominiali”: they can be very expensive (up to € 100 per month and per person).

Canteen In UNIPV’s canteens, you can have a complete meal including a first course (generally pasta or risotto), a second course, a side dish, bread, a dessert or a piece of fruit and water. Even if you don’t have your card you can have lunch and dinner at the university canteens. The price of a complete meal, without the canteen card, is €7,50. If you need more information, contact the staff of the International Relations Office. Here, you can find a list of the Canteens in Pavia:

This latter canteen is also called “Tre piani” (three floors) or “Fast food”: the ground floor offers a good choice of panini (sandwiches) and warm or cold main courses. The first floor has first courses and fresh vegetables, and the second floor serves very good pizza. You can also find second courses, vegetables, fruit and desserts almost on every floor. First courses are tasty! This is the only canteen that allows you to pay for every plate you take, not for the whole menu (actually the price for the entrée is €2,50, the main course is €3,00).

Bureaucracy

The Bureaucracy journey consists in several steps. We suggest you follow step by step the scheme highlighted below, since in order to proceed with the next “office” you will need to collect the documents from the previous one.

Tax Code What

The Tax Code, also known as Fiscal Code (in Italian, “Codice Fiscale”), is a combination of numbers and letters that is formed by combining:

- your name - gender - birth date - birth place

1 • Tax Code

2 • Health Assistance

3 • Permit of Stay

4 • Enrollment

5 • Bank Account

6 • UNIPass

7 • EDISU

11

Why

You need a Tax Code for daily life in Italy, e.g.: - to open a bank account - to get a SIM card - to rent an apartment - to buy a vehicle, to work, …

How

To get a Tax Code you have 2 different options:

1) AT HOME Ask for the Tax Code to the consulate when you are applying for visa in your country. Doing so, will allow you to save time once in Italy. However, this process depends on the consulate: same consulates may be able to provide the Tax Code for you, some others may not. Therefore, make sure that this option is possible in your country.

2) IN ITALY In order to get your Tax Code once in Italy, you need to go to the “Agenzia delle Entrate” office, fill in the application form that you will get from this office and bring with you your documents (passport; a copy of the pages with the personal information and your study visa).

Where and When

To get your Tax Code, you need to go to the “Agenzia delle Entrate” office.

Health Assistance

What The Health Assistance gives access to immediate necessary care and doctors under the same conditions as nationals of that country. The “Tessera Sanitaria” / Health Card is a card with your personal fiscal code and data. Thanks to this card, the user is recorded in the list of the beneficiaries of the ASL (“Azienda Sanitaria Locale”, the local health institute) and s/he can receive the SSN services and also:

- free service from the doctor you have been registered with - free basic medical assistance in the territory of your own domicile, etc. - payment of € 2,00 (ticket) on some medicines

AGENZIA DELLE ENTRATE Corso Mazzini, 18 Pavia E-mail: [email protected] Telephone: 0382 180 0111 Website: http://www.agenziaentrate.it Monday, Wednesday, Friday à 8:30 – 12:30 Tuesday, Thursday à 8:30 – 12:30, 14:00 – 16:00

12

Non-EU students: get an insurance policy, certified and translated, by the Italian Diplomatic Representative abroad BEFORE coming to Italy. Why

Health Assistance is required to have it for the entire duration of your stay. Moreover, it is necessary to get the Permit of Stay.

How

To get your “Tessera Sanitaria”, a year-long subscription must be paid (about €150 by a “bollettino postale” on the account c/c n° 379222) to the local health institute (ASL- Azienda Sanitaria Locale). The subscription is valid for one year, from January to December. If you are going to do the subscription, it would be better to do it at the beginning of January, because it’s NOT possible to pay just for the actual months of use of this service. The following documents are needed for getting the Health Card:

- Visa and permit of stay - Proof of your domicile (AUTOCERTIFICAZIONE: write this “Il sottoscritto/a NAME

SURNAME, dichiara di essere residente in via ADDRESS, SIGNATURE” on a piece of paper)

- Self-declaration of the “Codice fiscale” - Receipt of the subscription payment - A certificate proving that you are enrolled at the University of Pavia (you can download it

from your “Area Riservata”) and AUTOCERTIFICAZIONE of having no income except for scholarships

After applying for the “Tessera Sanitaria”, the office will give you a receipt that you can use as temporary substitution to the Health Card. You can therefore use this receipt to go to the hospital (as an Italian citizen) until you receive the original Tessera (it will take max 1 month to have it).

Where and When

Permit of Stay What All Non-EU students (in Italian, “Studenti Extracomunitari”) need to apply for a stay permit (in Italian, “Permesso di soggiorno”). The students must go to the Stay Permit

ASL PAVIA Viale Indipendenza, 3 Telephone: 0382 4311/ 4321 Fax: 0382 431299 E-mail: [email protected] Monday-Thursday: 8.30-12.30 / 14.00-16.00 Friday: 8.30-12.30
