Nighttime in the Treasure Kingdom

Nighttime in the Treasure Kingdom: Humans and animals are sleeping. Most of them, that is. Andrea, for one, cannot sleep because Thomas, who lives on the next floor, is taking a shower. Nico, on the other hand, is fast asleep in his cage, in the dark under its cloth cover. Outside, bats are flitting about, and a hedgehog shuffles through the grass. There’s an all-night reading marathon taking place at the Public Library, and in the upper floor, the terrariums of the reptile exposition emit a greenish glow. At the station the night train is ready for departure. Even though not all that many people are about at night, yet there is a lot going on in this warm summer night. Under cover of darkness, a burglar breaks into a dentist’s surgery. Will he make his escape undetected? A night-watchman and his dog are on their round patrolling the local department store. Yet the highlight and concluding episode of this particular adventure must surely be the big festival in the municipal park, complete with fireworks. As in her four previous books set in the Treasure Kingdom, Rotraut Susanne Berner has once more come up with a cornucopia of little stories, rich in well-observed details, an atmospheric nocturne that will make for splendid bedtime reading, for big and small alike.

Stories from Rotraut Susanne Berner’s famous Treasure Kingdom

Rotraut Susanne Berner’s Treasure Chest books are novels without words, containing many little loosely-linked stories about humans and animals. These stories are open-ended and the children love to develop

and elaborate them together with their parents. Here Rotraut Susanne Berner presents her own four stories from the beautiful Tre-

asure Kingdom, with characters that will be familiar to the avid reader. And it comes in funny rhymes.

Monika and MingusThe first couplet of this story presents proud Monica, a tawny

puss, wooed by Mingus, a love-sick

tomcat. She finally yields to his entreaties, and before long there are three little kittens, partly tiger-specked, partly black-and-white, to complete the little family.

OskarOskar, as every reader of the Treasure Chest books will

know, is a great lover of geese.

The story of how he became an anserophile in the first place is told in this little book.

Peter and StruppiStruppi is Peter’s cheeky little dog. He wants a life of

adventure, while all that Peter has on

offer is the likes of »stop!, sit!, heel!« But there are ways out of this boring routine …

InaIna’s one for being outside, in the open, in the middle of nature.

But the weather doesn’t always play

ball, and after every hike she always loves to come home because here it’s always »sunny weather«.

Sooo much to discover …

What greater delight for a child than to lie sprawled out on the floor in front of a big picture-book, with hundreds of familiar and unfamiliar things to discover? Rotraut Susanne Berner has designed just such a book whose large-format pictures show a whole town and its surroundings: a house for several families, a farm, a railway station, a community centre, a building site, a market place, a multi-storey department store, and a large park. These pictures tell many little stories of things that happen to people and animals on a winter day, and eve-ry child can follow these stories as they unfold through the book: How Andrea oversleeps and then keeps trying, again and again, to catch a bus. What happens to Sarah and her father on a cycling tour. Where Pedro, the South American street musician, finally finds a place to play. And since there are plenty of stories to tell about this town throughout the year Rotraut Susanne Berner designed a book for each season. So now everybody can discover for himself how life in the town and its surroundings changes over the year: What the farmer sows in spring and har-vests later on, how cherries and plums ripen in summer, while apples and pears have to wait till autumn; what time Peter’s sister is born and what kind of mischief Nico the parrot is up to in the spring; what kind of games children play in the summer and how long it takes for the construction work on the new nursery to be completed.

Who’ll spot the biggest number of pairs?

Each of 36 inhabitants of the Treasure Chest Kingdom appears on two of the little cards that make up this memory game. The player who finds the biggest number of pairs wins! This memory game is right up every kid’s street. The players take turns uncovering two cards at a time. If both cards show the same character the player may keep this pair of cards. If there are different cha-racters it’s the next player’s turn. The trick is to memorize the positions of as many cards as possible. Children excel at this kind of game and will love to go hunting for their favourite characters from Rotraut Susanne Berner’s Treasure Chests. There’s an extra twist: Though each of the cha-racters appears twice, there is a slight dif-ference between the two pictures. Andrea, for instance, has her umbrella unfurled in one picture, and furled in the other one. Rotraut Susanne Berner’s memory game for the whole family!

big, colourful puzzle. Each of the double pages in Rotraut

Susanne Berner’s Treasure Chest Books of the four seasons invites the

reader to enter the Treasure World and become engrossed in the countless de-tails in each picture. Why not turn such a double page into a puzzle, then? Children from 4 years onwards are encouraged to explore life on the market square, playing a game all the while. Once all the people and animals have found their proper places and all the pieces have been joined together, you get a colourful large-format picture of the house, the market square, the park or the railway station. And then you can start from scratch …

Cute Colouring Books for Fans of the

Treasure Kingdom!

For all young fans Rotraut Susanne Berner’s colouring books provide a guided tour through the seasons where short picture stories in rhyme relate adventures in the Treasure Kingdom. Spring, summer, autumn and winter – for each season Rotraut Susanne Berner has designed a special colouring book – a real labour of love. On each of the double pages the kids can colour in their favourite characters from the Treasure Kingdom while reading the accompanying story told in funny rhymes. Throughout the book a number of additional characters carry tools and implements belonging to a parti-cular season. Besides, each book contains one huge Treasure Picture waiting to be coloured in – an engaging challenge designed to train the children’s fine motor skills. The last page invites the children to paint themselves in each of the four seasons. Here the mere colouring in of contours gives way to painting in their own right, and in the end each child will have produced its very own picture book.

Treasure Chest Characters as all time companions and

lucky charms

Rotraut Susanne Berner has selected five of her Treasure Chest Characters to go on a journey beyond the boundaries of their books. While cat fans might choose Mingus the tomcat as a faithful companion, bookworms will love Ina with the book. Armin with a bouquet in his hands is a beautiful small gift. And Oskar with his goose or the colourful parrot Niko are not only very decorative, but also guaran-tee to bring luck. Each image of the robust and high-quality processed metal pins is pinned on a firm painting-in-postcard, which can be given as a present or displayed wherever one likes. Whether as jewellery, lucky charm, consolation or simply for cheering up – these five different images fit any occasion!

Are you a Kid Bandit, too?

Kid bandits are wicked! And dreadfully naughty, never doing things the way they ought to be done. Just watch them eat! And those strange games they play, the weird things they build. Nor do they talk to anybody. But they have a whale of a time. And when things get tough, they stick together! So, wouldn’t every child want to be a kid bandit once in a while? Now, here’s a cheeky little cardboard book which kids will love – and grown-ups, too!

Bats hang around with their Heads pointing down.

All but one, that is – Batty!

As long as he’s allowed to be upside-down, Batty is the world’s happiest bat kid. But sometimes he wonders just why he is the way he is. Uncle Waldemar’s got a simple answer to that: It takes all kinds! What’s more, being upside-down has its upside, too (you wouldn’t believe!) – Batty is the best kite-dropper for miles around. He’s quicker to find the ball in the mea-dow-sky than anybody else. And it’s because he always lies next to the entrance to the bed cave, rather than hang from the ceiling, that greedy Mr. Fox never finds the bats. After all it stands to reason that this thing lying on the floor cannot be a bat!In her picture book Antje Damm plays a game of shifting perspectives – what seems to be the right way up to bats, must needs appear upside-down to us. The book can be looked at either way – if you’re that way inclined you can peruse it at your leisure standing on your head. And each different angle reveals something new! Here’s a book that illustrates in a playful way what it’s like to be unlike most of the others.

Never mind, there is always a Place

where you’ll be alright!

Diffy Differs follows his heart, which tells him that somewhere there is a place where it’s okay to be different.

If you’re a sheep among sheep you feel sheltered – everything is fine. With Diffy, however, things are different because he is different. Deep down in his heart he feels that there must be a place somewhere where being different is okay. Driven by this innermost yearning he goes in search of that very place. Every time he encounters something which is just that tiny bit different he becomes hopeful. But nowhere does he really feel at home, and so he begins to feel despondent. Ex-hausted and discouraged he climbs onto a train, cuddles up inside a box for some comfort and protection from the cold, and falls asleep. When he awakes he cannot believe his eyes and ears: a murmuring noise sends shivers of delight down his spine, and there is something huge in front of him which is every bit as different as he is. At long last Diffy has found his place!

Young Miriam Koch’s debut is a wonderful declaration of love to the sea and a big boost of morale for all those who feel just a tiny bit different. It comes in a format that is just that tiny bit different, and its presentation is simply gorgeous.

Things come alive

»Just a sec!« things summon us, »have a look at me!« And while we gaze at them they come alive. Gardening implements, tools, and components of sundry appliances turn into birds, airplanes and faces. Orlando Vazau teaches us to look and use our imagination in order to re-create the world.Scrap metal and bakelite, such as are to be found in old electrical appliances, are wondrous things indeed, if we only knew how to look at them. Even if you just lay them side by side, they can look like the star-filled skies or an assemblage of shells. And once you put some skill and ingenuity into combining them, those discarded objects may well turn into apes and elephants, robots, nay, complete airplanes, which can in turn create the backdrop to a story to be told. Orlando Vazau shows us how to breathe life into dead objects and invites us to follow in his creative foot-steps.

Our contribution to celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 250. birthday has been created by Mozart himself and by Jutta Bauer: Music, text and pictures especially made for children.»Bona nox, bist ein rechter Ochs, bona notte, liebe Lotte« is the beginning of a fa-mous children’s song written and composed by the very young Mozart. Jutta Bauer has turned it into a picturebook-story in which the ox and the dark night want to scare the wits out of Lotte, who can’t find her way home. But they do not know cou-rageous Lotte, who isn’t scared easily and safely finds her way into her warm bed. Good night, liebe Lotte!A lovely bedtime-and-get-rid-of-fear-book, that en passant teaches children to sing and say Good night in Latin, German, Italian, French and English. Together we’re strong

Best of friends - Jan and Josh stick together! With consummate ease and great warmth Sigrid Zeevart tells us the story of a special friendship between two kids, exploring its limits, and demonstrating that there’s always a solution as long as people are ready to stand by each other. There’s a lot of things happening in Jan’s life: It’s springtime, and Fanny, Jan’s cat, is about to give birth to her first litter of kittens. Then there’s some heart surgery coming up, but Jan had rather not think about it too much. He prefers to knock about with Josh, his best mate, down at the creek. And he helps Lara-Sofie, a girl from his class, with her maths. The kittens arrive, and they’re ever so cute – Jan knows he’s never seen anything like it before! When he shows them to Lara-So-fie before anybody else, it’s little wonder that his best mate Josh is hurt. To make things worse, two bigger boys take away the knife Josh lent him – how can he ever prove that friendship is more to him than an empty word? Things come to a head when someone is hurt in a knife attack, and suspicion falls on his very friend Josh …

About settling down

Rheinburg is not the first stage in Juri’s life, but it’s where his friend Aljoscha lives, and where he feels at home. But when his father meets Martha and moves to her home town, Juri must, once again, leave everything behind that is close and dear to him.It is five years since Juri first came to Germany. By now he is eleven years old, and many things have changed. But to him, Klinker Street, where his friends Aljo-scha, Alexej and Larissa live, has become home. When his father falls in love with Martha, and they all move to another city, far far away, for Jury it is goodbye again and a brand-new start. Suddenly he’s got a whole new family, including a big sister, and there’s a new school to get used to as well, which he doesn’t find easy. The fact that there are no other Russians in this small town doesn’t help either. But then it’s winter, a real cold one, with lots of snow, the way Juri likes it best. And there’s the forest and tracks in the snow, animal tracks that Juri discovers one night. And a shadow flashing past. A dog? Or maybe a wolf? But then there are no wolves to be found in this area. So maybe it’s just the runaway cat that belongs to Nora, a girl from his class. When Juri finally musters the courage to tell her about it, the two of them go in search of the mysterious animal, a search that will take them to a small lake hidden away deep in the heart of the forest … A tender friend-ship begins to blossom, and suddenly Juri doesn’t feel all alone any more.

Have you had your daily Fix of Snogging?

Pascal is sore. Not only does he have to spend all of the summer holidays at home while everybody else seems to be gallivanting all over the place. No, to make things worse, his two best friends have managed to create some extra pressure just before they set off for their holiday destinations: The fact is that Leo and Kalle have already kissed a girl. In the flush of their achievement these swollen-headed megalomani-acs have founded a »League of Illuminati«. And now they’re expecting Pascal to do his utmost to catch up with them over the holidays – preferably with a lovebite to prove it. A target for his aspirations is quickly found: Maila, new to the town, is just floating past, on gossamer wings, or so it seems. It’s got to be her! But how do you chat up a girl in the first place? And, what’s more, what do you have to do so that she’ll let you kiss her? The Flying Zucchinis, Pascal’s friends, don’t stint their advice. Formidable in their biker’s gear, they’re really good-natured guys at the bottom of their hearts. And though their advice is really well-meant, it sets Pascal off on a course more chaotic and adventurous than any journey could have been this summer. Digger, a Great Dane, as peaceable as they come, and Agathe, a Tibetan dwarf hog, make their very own contributions. By the end of the summer, Pascal, now pushing twelve, has come to the conclusion, that this whole snogging business is vastly overrated. Those chicks will have to wait a few more years for him …

A beastly Family Adventure

Uncle Ernest sends Leo a box, asking him to look after its contents for a fortnight. Its »contents« makes funny noises, emits a somewhat pungent smell, and tries to push its Tibetan pig’s snout through the lattice … »She’s from Tibet, obedient, house-trained and has a very amenable character, even though she’s a bit on the stubborn side …» – »she« being Agatha, the Tibetan sow that Uncle Ernest has sent to Leo to look after for a while. Leo is flabbergasted! When he ventures a first look at the lattice he glimpses a big wet nostril sniffing and snorting hello. Oh dear! Still, the creature cannot remain in the box indefinitely. As soon as Leo has prised off the top Agatha thrusts forth her head and ears a-flapping and eyes wide awake, jumps out of her chest with a resolute »harumph«. Her first exploratory wanderings take her to the Ohlig family’s rubbish bin in the kitchen. Leo is sure: If his parents find out, his beloved Unlce Ernest will be in for it. And when his sister evokes the spectre, the mean caretaker, Leo has a vision of himself and his family without a home, reduced to camping under a bridge. The sow must remain incognito! This is a whale of an adventure, spiced with a running commentary of wry re-marks, courtesy of Agatha, the sow.

The story goes on: The Summer of the Flying Zucchinis

A powerful and magical Parable on the Tribulations

of a first great Love …

In the middle of a world of woods lies a little village where Vialla lives with her family. The Tame Forest, which surrounds it, nourishes and protects the village whereas the Wild Forest bristles with danger. Only once every year a wedding procession makes its way to the next village. When Vialla meets Romaro it’s love at first sight. But the two look too much alike, and in this secluded forest world the villagers dread the risk of incest. Vialla is urged to choose someone else, but she won’t have it! For her, it’s Romaro or no one else. And Romaro feels the same. So they run away, searching for another village deep in the heart of the forest which will welcome them. But the Wild Forest does its name full justice. They quickly lose their way in this green jungle where hidden dangers lurk. When they come to a pond a beautiful girl appears and addresses Romaro. Vialla, however, is deeply frightened because she can see the girl’s true nature – she’s a demon who lurks in the forest waiting for her prey and who casts a spell over her unfortunate victims. Romaro leaves with the beautiful girl, and Vialla is left behind. Though Romaro believes to be inside a palace, it really is just the trunk of a tree; the servants in their splendid liveries are just small animals of the forest; the tasty dishes are but roots and grass … By all means Vialla tries to deliver Romaro from his delusion, and bring him back to reality, back to her. But the demon has the power of magic, whereas Vialla’s only got her love and her wits to carry her through.

The Hour of the Jester

A war is being waged between the Kingdom of Vinland and the Kingdom of Mon-fiel – a war that is older than Florin, the King of Monfiel’s only son. But now, in the early autumn of 1340, the two long-time enemies make peace, and a glittering banquet is given at King Theodo of Vinland’s court to seal the peace treaty. How was Florin to know that the whole show is a trap? There is no celebration awaiting him at the court of Vinland, but sheer horror. He has to look on helpless-ly while his father and his faithful followers are cruelly humiliated in front of the assembled courtiers. Only by a hair’s breadth does Florin escape being flung into the dungeon along with the others: on a whim, King Theodo makes him his jester’s apprentice. So Florin comes to meet Mimus, the most colourful and inscrutable figure at the court … Florin loses everything he had: his position as crown prince, his freedom, his iden-tity. What’s more, any day may bring death to him and his father. When the situati-on at the court escalates and the possibility of escape seems more remote than ever, the jester’s hour has come …Mimus is a gripping adventure novel that bristles with sparkling wit – a jester’s story without laughter is unthinkable – and turns the colourful world of the Middle Ages into a rich sensual experience.

A compelling biographical Novel about one of the most

important female Figures in the History of Art

Artemisia Gentileschi was the first woman ever who managed to exercise her art professionally and lead a life that was, by the standards of her time, largely self-determined. She was the first woman who did not content herself with painting portraits, landscapes and still lives, but tackled historical subjects as well. At the time, i.e. the first half of the 17th century, her way of representing the biblical cha-racter of Judith was revolutionary, no less.Never before had a woman been admitted to the Academy of Florence; never before had a woman painter been in a position to earn her own living, without a husband, and to keep her own studio. But to get there Artemisia had to struggle against opposition and adversity all the way. A relationship with her father’s painter friend Agostino Tassi did not result in a wedding, but a lawsuit and subsequent trial for the restoration of her, and above all, the family’s honour. In their biographical novel Michael Hatry and Susanna Partsch trace the life of Ar-temisia, always on the basis of historical documents. The book is complemented by an appendix containing concise biographies of her fellow painters; furthermore a critical appraisal of the paintings mentioned in the novel puts them in their right-ful place in the history of art.

Trouble in Paradise

This is an unusual love story set against the backdrop of a virtually unknown part of German colonial history for which Waldtraut Lewin has developed a peculiar tone and rhythm all her own. It is the year 1904. After seven cold years spent at a boarding-school in Berlin, Adam returns to his beloved island of Upolu, in Wes-tern Samoa, which has been a German colony for four years. Adam grew up here because his father runs the protestant mission. To him Samoa means memories of a carefree childhood, of bright open skies, palm trees and white beaches. The fact that Samoa has been a bone of contention of the colonial powers, and that the current partition of Polynesia into various spheres of influence is but a precarious one, doesn’t unduly trouble him. When the »Dresden«, a huge cruiser, docks in the harbour, there is not just his mother and his little brother Kai standing at the quai, there’s Moana as well, the girl with whom he used to play on the beach. After his arrival Adam is in a daze. He is in love for the first time, and soon enough Moana and he have realized that their first love is the one and only great love as well. But there is trouble in paradise – the colonial powers’ quarrel regarding these South Sea islands threatens to escalate, and Adam’s father is not the only one to have reservations about his son’s relationship with a native. In the end escape to Europe seems to be the only way out. But will Moana be able to survive there?

Moana goes on

Europe in 1910 – on the eve of the First World War. Adam, a young pianist, has settled in Berlin with his Samoan wife Moana. Five years ago they fled from Samoa, seeking refuge in Germany in order to begin a new life together. Adam embarks on a promising career as a musician, but finds himself unable to ward off an increa-sing number of racist remarks levelled at Moana. Presented with the chance of a first major international tour he sets off without Moana who stays behind, alone. Moana enters a deep depression and falls silent. Committed to a psychiatric ward she is befriended by Volker Feldkamp, an ambitious young doctor who succeeds in breaking up the carapace bind which she has retired. She begins to speak again, but only in code, in the symbolic language of her native country. Feldkamp, who has contacts in the secret service, is quick to grasp the unique chance presenting itself – with Moana’s assistance he may develop a new code for the German espio-nage network, based on the language of Polynesian pictograms. When Moana dis-covers Feldkamp’s game, and the way he’s using her for his own ends, she wants out …

Survival and Resistance in the Third Reich

A true Story

In early 1943 sixteen-year-old Eugen has to go into hiding. The protection of his non-Jewish stepfather is not sufficient any more to save him from deportation. He finds shelter in Luckenwalde, a small town to the south of his native Berlin. And here he witnesses the founding of »Gemeinschaft für Frieden und Aufbau« (Soci-ety for Peace and Reconstruction), a group of resistance fighters in whose actions he takes part himself. At last he has found a way to fight against the criminal Nazi regime! Here Jews and Non-Jews are united in their struggle, distribute leaflets and help those persecuted by providing them with shelter and forged papers. The group acts with determination, and takes desperate risks, like some »Simple Simon tack-ling Hitler«. The warnings of Eugen’s father go unheeded – in the early summer of 1944 the group is busted.Eugen Herman-Friede recounts the story of his childhood and adolescence, always from the angle of the boy from Berlin that he was at the time, eager to live. Just like Eugen, the reader experiences the gradual exclusion of the Jewish population, and begins to grasp the underlying deadly menace only when it’s almost too late. And he tells the story of a virtually unknown group of resistance fighters, whose actions are not so much determined by ideological motives as by the will to oppose the Nazi regime and its inhumanity, to fight against war and persecution.

Pete and his Invisible Friend –an international bestseller!

»Come on, do it!«, »Nobody will be the wiser!«, »It’s now or never!« – this is the kind of talk the Invisible keeps pestering Pete with. After all, Pete is, by and large, more of the prudent kind, as good as gold. Yet sometimes he just doesn’t know how to counter the Invisible’s arguments: After all, why shouldn’t he nibble a bit off the chocolate Easter bunny before Sunday lunchtime, since he is so hungry? Why shouldn’t he show beautiful, redheaded Julia what a plucky guy he is – isn’t it a well-known fact that girls go for the daredevil types? It’s just too bad that it’s always Pete who has to face the music each time things go wrong – things the Invisible has talked him into doing. In these devastatingly funny stories about Pete and his Invisible Friend Klaus-Peter Wolf describes how a boy learns to question the »done« things, as well as those that aren’t done, realizing all the while where his own limits are.In her colour illustrations Amelie Glienke manages to picture even the Invisible in a more than adequate manner.

The old forester, who lives right in the middle of the forest, has many a tale to tell, about Wily, the thieving fox, or Bushy-tails, the hare. The Smile on the Face of the Tiger

The birds and the bees, hawks and doves, and sundry exotic beasts to boot – they all populate a collection of poems, old and new, which Reinhard Michl has copiously illustrated in a subtle, masterly manner that is all his own. Wilhelm Busch, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Josef Guggenmos, Heinrich Heine, Mascha Kaléko, Erich Kästner, James Krüss, Christian Morgenstern, Joachim Ringelnatz, these are just a few of the poets who have brought to life the fascinating world of animals. Here crafty foxes pursue their nefarious activities side by side with mere figments of fertile imagination such as Morgenstern’s exotic Nasobem, along-side proud cocks or accident-prone creatures like Ernst Jandl’s gold fish. Apart from the well-known classics, some new or unjustly neglected poems provide pleasant surprises. Like few others, Reinhard Michl, who had the original idea for this book, succeeds in making visible the various animals’ characters and idiosyncrasies as they are described by the poets. This is a feast for the eyes and a real treasure chest for the whole family to dip into.

Stories from the Magic Forest

The trees in the Magic Forest are chock-a-block with stories. They tell us about Mr. Ravenfeather’s School for Letters, about the moon casting curious glances into the children’s bedroom, and about Carlotta, who will soon have a baby brother. But it’s not only the trees that have seen a lot in life. The old forester, who lives right in the middle of the forest, has many a tale to tell, about Wily, the thieving fox, or Bushy-tails, the hare. For the lovers – big and small – of Heinrich Hannover’s fancyful tales here’s so-mething to look forward to: A sumptuous collection, complete with many, many gorgeous colour pictures. Among Chimps and wild Gorillas in the wild

Heart of Africa

If there’s one thing in her long life that Jane Goodall, world-famous behavioural scientist, will never forget, it’s the moment that David Greybeard, a wild chimpan-zee, took her hand. For two years the young woman had been following these shy animals, in Gombe, right in the heart of Africa. At long last her endurance is rewarded: She manages to gain their trust and obtain some spectacular new insights into their behaviour. Jane finds a kindred spirit in Dian Fossey, a fellow scientist who studies the behaviour of mountain gorillas. The two women dedicate their entire lives to the study of these primates – and Dian will eventually lose hers while fighting for the protection of the African gorillas. Together with author Maja Nielsen Jane Goodall retraces her steps and tells about her fascinating experiences as a behavioural scientist and about the fight to save the primates. This is a moving book, for readers of every age, that will take you to the world of the primates in the wild heart of Africa.

A Journey into Prehistory

The earth, 200 million years ago. Almost the entire landmass of our planet is co-vered with primeval forest. This is the age of the dinosaur: No matter where, in the water, on land or in the air; be they vegetarians or carnivores, predators or quarry dinosaurs are the dominant species. And among these gigantic reptiles, the biggest and most dangerous hunter of all time: Tyrannosaurus Rex, »King of the Tyrant Lizards«. However, after having reigned su-preme for almost two hundred million years, within quite a short period all the dinosaurs die out … to be »rediscovered« in 1812, some 65 million years later, by Mary Anning, a twelve-year old English girl. Her discovery, the skeleton of an Ichthyosaurus, becomes an international sensati-on and marks the beginning of the study of dinosaurs. This book tells the exciting story of the first »dino hunters«: Mary Anning and her sensational discovery; Richard Owen and Gideon Mantell, the first rival fossil hunters; Barnum Brown, the man who discovered Tyrannosurus Rex; and Edward Cope and Othniel Marsh, whom dinomania turned into bitter enemies, and who literally had »many a bone to pick«. With ample assistance from Dr. »Dino« Frey, one of Germany’s most-acclaimed palaeontolgists, Maja Nielsen’s book follows the trail of the dino hunters. Along the way Dr. Frey contributes some stories of his own, recounting his discovery of the »Monster of Aramberri«, the skeleton of a huge marine creature of the saurian type, found in Mexico in 2002. A real voyage of discovery, related with gusto, crammed with facts, and accompanied by fascina-ting pictures.

The African savannah: steppe by steppe by step-pe, as far as the eye can see. It is home to millions of animals: lions, zebras, elephants, antelopes, gnus, cheetahs, and many more. They range the vast grass-scape looking for food, congregate at the water-holes, and seek shelter from the sun under tall trees – a spectacle to take your breath away. Those who take a closer look will find more to marvel at: The sa-vannah is one huge »kindergarten« for the wild animals of Africa. Zebra babies, lion cubs, and little elephants born here soon begin to lead exciting lives in the vast steppe. Much-acclai-med, award-winning photographer Gabriela Staebler has taken a closer look, in-deed, following the wild youngsters’ antics, camera in hand. Capturing the wild animal »children« in beautiful, at times spectacular, photographs, she records their adventures in vivid pictures, complemented by explana-tory comments. Her current series tells the stories behind the pictures, the stories about the »wild children« of Africa.

form a protective wall. While growing up the young elephant will likewise be protected and

looked after by the whole family. Even so the little bull elephant lives through many an

adventure. This book tells his story. (64 pages)

and adventures along the way. (48 pages)

Discovery Series:The French Revolution

The French Revolution was a turning point in history. Not only did the ten years between the storming of the Bastille in 1789 and Napoleon’s seizure of power in 1799 radically change the political structure of France, but the Revolution became a turning point of European history as a whole. Liberty, Equality, Fraternity are the central political ideas of the French Revolution. Such events as the storming of the Bastille, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and, on the other hand, the Reign of Terror, still concern us today because from that struggle arose the type of modern democratic state which is founded on the rule of law: Constitution, Human Rights, Separation of Powers. This book provides copious information about the causes, the course and the principal protagonists of the French Revolution, and numerous historical pictures and vivid drawings complement the text in a most impressive manner.

Discovery Series:The First Democracy

Ancient Greece is commonly considered to be the cradle of democracy: In 462 B.C. the rule of the people is introduced in Athens. After the overthrow of the tyrants’ rule and the war against the Persians, Pericles is foremost in initiating decisive political changes intended to strengthen the rule of the people. This volume traces the major stages on the road to the first democracy in the history of mankind. Well-informed articles, accompanied by historically accurate illustrations, give a good idea of how people then used to live, how they went to war, how popular assemblies were held, and how trials in front of a jury were conducted. Further valuable infor-mation is offered on the importance of religion, the part played by the attic naval league, the position of women in public life, the role of the theatre and the ideas of the philosophers. An exciting introduction to the subject for children from 10 years onwards.

Kim’s Auntie Ilse has a secret. She’s been acting mighty strange, these last couple of days. While Kim is still wondering what it’s all about, something drops on her head – Krimskramuri, a charming extraterrestrial from the planet Idea. He is willing to help Kim. The two of them try to discover Auntie Ilse’s secret. So first of all, Krimskramuri invents a spy camera which will unobtrusively monitor all of Auntie Ilse’s movements, 24 hours a day …Kim’s story provides a framework that links, in a most entertaining fashion, a variety of tinker "recipes". Apart from the camera you are told how to make your own notebook, visiting cards, a soft case for your mobile phone, finger-print-pow-der, not forgetting a lucky charm, an automatic seat and a high-class dog kennel. These easy-to-follow instructions are complemented by numerous sketches and colour photographs. But that is far from all: Special Courses (jigsaw work, drilling and the use of screws, papering and glueing, folding paper, bookbinding, cutting, and sewing) complete the book and invite the reader to devise courses of their own.The modern, clear design facilitates orientation: The instructions, special courses and Kim’s story are set off visually.

What’s cookin’?

Cooking is all the rage, cookery courses for young people are in great demand. Boys go for sushi and spare ribs, girls prefer pasta and Asian dishes. Both love wraps and suchlike. And of course, cooking together is strictly an absolute must. Here then is the cookery book for this target group. When young people start cooking, just for fun, they don’t need a conventional coo-kery book. All they want to know is how to make, themselves, their favourite things to eat. So, although in fact being a cookery course, fortunately enough this book doesn’t look like one. Likely questions are answered »in passing«, and some smart solutions to tricky problems will make many an adult raise admiring eyebrows. Furthermore a number of recipes provide links to similar ones: Thus quiche will refer you to apple pie, teaching you, by the way, that the mixture of eggs and cream required for both dishes is basically the same, it’s just the spices used that are different. Throughout the book a »ribbon« running along the bottom of the pages will provide plenty of useful and inventive tips and tricks. Not only does the aut-hor warn you of potential pitfalls, but will also tell you how to salvage a dish gone wrong, or what you can do if wraps is on the menu, but you forgot to buy tortillas! Besides the recipes for youngsters, there are some evergreens as well. And of course, the ingredients required make allowances for the limited means that young persons have at their disposal. A novel kind of glossary takes account of changed reading habits. Besides the usual index, there is an additional chapter providing recipes for particular occasions: Cooking for parties, Cooking alone, »Gang cooking«, Cooking for lovers, Cooking for the family.

Everybody wants to be a hero every once in a while - at least in their dreams. And strange things can happen when dreams and reality clash - as, indeed, they do to Max, the fearless dragon fighter. A bedtime story for trainee knights and other heroes!

Max just loves stories about knights and dragons. So it’s little wonder the bedtime story his mother reads to him follows him into his sleep. And such a pleasant dream he has, fighting dragons. So next morning Max decides to follow up his dream and lead a life of chivalrous adventure - just like last night’s dream. And, lo and behold, there is a mighty foe blocking his way - just like last night’s dream. But for the tiny detail, that is, that it isn’t brave Sir Max who puts the foe to flight, but rather an equally fearless damsel-sans-distress who stuffs her adversary (i.e. Max) into the water-butt. Short shrift, indeed, make no mistake! Try as he will in his world of fantasy, the real world holds plenty of nasty surprises, enough to foil his wild flights of fancy. At the end of the day he realises that he’d better cut down on heroic exploits, and welcome his new neighbour instead, the fearless damsel. Who knows, she might turn out to be an excellent jouster, to boot!

In an original manner young artist Thilo Krapp’s book contrasts dream and reality on opposite pages, sparkling with colour and his very own brand of wit that’s bound to bring a smile to your face or draw a giggle from your throat. An impressive de-but, indeed!

What an exciting thing to watch - a building site! There’re cranes, lorries and concrete mixers; and lots of working men ply their various crafts. The numerous activities involved -seven-year-old Tim knows them all!

Tim’s parents are building a house. And Tim can „get in on the ground floor“, as it were, because the architect is his uncle Hannes. Knowing all the requisite stages, Hannes will see it through to its completion - from casting the foundations to put-ting up the roof. Tracing the consecutive stages of a real-life building site, this meticulously resear-ched fact-and-picture book tells about the planning of a house, and about the „be-hind-the-scenes“ activities of cranes, excavators and concrete mixers. While detailed illustrations follow the building process, with the house gradually taking shape, informative glosses behind the flaps introduce the reader to key terms of house building. Rolf Toyka, the author, is a trained architect, and therefore in a perfect position to contribute his personal know-how.The book was written in collaboration with the Academy of Architecture and Town Planning of the State of Hesse.

200th Birthday of Charles Darwin

In December 1831, HMS Beagle, a survey ship, leaves England heading for South America. Among the passengers is Charles Darwin, a twenty-two-year old theologi-an with a keen interest in natural science. At the time nobody has the slightest idea what import this expedition will have for mankind: Darwin’s observations in those far-away lands, and the conclusions he draws from them, will change the world...

In the course of that five-year journey Darwin discovers by then unknown plants and animals, and sets foot on virgin soil, where no man has trod before. His keen observations on the immense variety of life forms lead him to challenge orthodox views: Could it be that the story of the Creation has got it wrong? That life on earth was not created once and for all in its present form, but is subject to continuous change? And which are the laws that govern this change? Could man himself have evolved from more primitive species? Could it really be the case that humankind bears a much closer relationship to the animal kingdom than had been assumed?Maja Nielsen tells the gripping story of an explorer, whose insights and „dangerous thoughts“ were in open conflict with the beliefs held by his contemporaries and, up till then, himself. Together with evolutionary biologist Dr. Matthias Glaubrecht, she embarks on a quest for the mysteries of evolution, amply demonstrating the fact that Darwin’s discoveries have lost none of their power to fascinate any reader.
