It's not what you would do… It's what you can do!”

Calling. It's a vague word and it looks different for all of us - but we all want it. What is God's purpose for us? What does He want us to do with the time we've been given? Our calling is not some distant future dream we'll chase and champion when our situation allows it. It's not what we would do… it's what we can do!

Let me ask you, “What good would you do if you had perfect circumstances at this point in your life?”

“I would if I could… But I can’t so I won’t…” That is the preset response of most people when God calls them to do something, or a need arises in the world that they are individually called to meet. “I would if I could… But I can’t so I won’t…”

Let me suggest if you cannot do the good that you would, then you should do the good that you can! Realize that your calling is active, not passive. Usually the people that God calls and uses are not the people who have the best of everything. They are more often the people who have the least, or the smallest. The difference is that they make the most of what they do have.

A lot of people think of their calling in terms in terms of what they will do “someday”. But the world is not changed by what you will do one day if it is not connected to so mething you are doing right now. Don’t put your calling on consignment. Don’t defer your destiny. Don’t put out there some idealistic situation where when it happens, only then you will accomplish the will of God with your life.

Passionate About God’s Will

“So we continued the work... from the first light of dawn till the stars came out.”

Nehemiah 4:21 In the face of overwhelming odds, Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem in just 52 days. How? Because he had a single-minded passion to do so! Facing the greatness of his need, Nehemiah looked beyond his present situation and focused on the greatness of his God

Some of us are afraid to pray, “Lord, I’ll do what you want me to do.” We fear that he might send us somewhere we don’t want to go or asks us to do something we don’t feel ready or qualified to do. That when we discover that we’ve got it all wrong! The Bible says God’s will is “good, and acceptable, and perfect” (Romans 12:2). What is there to be afraid of in that formula? Now, while God’s will for us is “good,” it’s not necessarily easy! But, He gives us a passion for it. Jeremiah said that when he tried to stop speaking about the Lord, God’s Word became “like a burning fire shut up in my bones.” (Jeremiah 20:9) You can’t contain a fire that God lights. When He sets your heart ablaze, you begin to see things you never saw before and get excited about them. Not only does God enable our present and future. He redeems our past. He can even take your chapters of regret and write a story of grace, if you are will ing to surrender them to Him. But it’s not likely you’ll experience much of a passion for anything if you’re just sitting on the sidelines waiting for something to happen. James says “Don’t just be a hearer of God’s word, be a doer.” (James 1:22) Remember there is very little difference between a deep rut and a grave, and when you are caught only spinning your wheels you often find yourself simply digging your hole deeper! One of the greatest secrets of true discipleship is discovering that you’ll get a passion for God’s will once you begin doing it! You’ll think, “this is what I was made for.” Then when you discover that you have a compelling reason for doing something, and you know that God is watching and smiling on you, it makes all the difference!

Unfolding the Rosebud and Discovering God’s Will For Our Lives

A young, new preacher was walking with an older, more seasoned preacher in the garden one day and feeling a bit insecure about what God had for him to do, he was inquiring of the older preacher. The older preacher walked up to a rosebush and handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to open it without tearing off any petals. The young preacher looked in disbelief at the older preacher and was trying to figure out what a rosebud could possibly have to do with his

wanting to know the WILL OF GOD for his life and for his ministry. Because of his high respect for the older preacher, he proceeded to TRY to unfold the rose, while keeping every petal intact. It wasn’t long before he realized how it was impossible to do so. Noticing the younger preacher’s inability to unfold the rosebud while keeping it in tact, the older preacher began to tell the following poem...

Unfolding The Rosebud

It is only a tiny rosebud, A flower of God’s design;

But I cannot unfold the petals With these clumsy hands of mine.

The secret of unfolding flowers

Is not known to such as I. God opens this flower so sweetly,

When in my hands they fade and die.

If I cannot unfold a rosebud, This flower of God’s design,

Then how can I think I have wisdom To unfold this life of mine?

So I’ll trust in Him for His leading

Each moment of every day. I will look to Him for His guidance

Each step of the pilgrim way.

The pathway that lies before me, Only my heavenly Father knows.

I’ll trust Him to unfold the moments, Just as He unfolds the rose.

Will You Wait? God has provided the Holy Spirit to teach His children about His will for them (John 14:26). Yet so have we find ourselves feeling lost or abandoned as we seek God’s answer or will for our lives. So, why do we have trouble understanding what the plan is? Here are three possible reasons… We make decisions based on emotion. When life presses in on us, our instinct is to move away from the source of the stress or pain. Our need to remove turmoil and difficulties from our lives takes precedence over God’s plan. We figure He could not want us to feel this way, so we act and hope we are in His will. Our emphasis is on ourselves rather than on God’s will. We focus only on the immediate. Many times we come to God troubled about the choices we or our loved ones face. We do not see how this situation could possibly be His will. Our short-term focus prevents us from seeing God’s long-term purposes. We conduct a superficial search. In our desire for an answer, we can treat finding God’s will like a checklist: Read the Bible; pray; fast; serve; worship; give. Then, satisfied with what we have done, we press the Lord for His answer now. But we have neglected to give God the time and stillness needed for hearing from Him. (Psalm 46:10) Investing time with God is a necessity, not a luxury, and listening without distractions is essential. How much Bible study is required to find out what God wants for us? What amount of prayer? What quantity of time? The answer is simple: however long it takes to hear from God. He will answer.

The question is: Will you wait?

Trying To Please Everyone

The story is told of a man and his grandson traveling down the road, walking and leading a donkey.

They first met a man who said, "How foolish for you to be walking. One of you should be riding the donkey." So the man put his grandson on the animal.

The next traveler they met frowned and said, "How dreadful for a strong boy to be riding while an old man walks." So the boy

climbed off the donkey and his grandfather climbed on.

The next person they met said, "I just can't believe a grown man would ride and make a little boy walk." So the man pulled the boy up and they rode the donkey together. That is, until they met another man who said, "I never saw anything so cruel in all my life — two human beings riding on one poor defenseless donkey!"

Down the road a ways, they met a couple of men. After they passed, one of the men turned to the other and said, "Did you ever before see two fools carrying a donkey?"

The point is: You can't please everyone! And it can be very frustrating to even try to do so because it's impossible. The truth of the matter is, even if we could please everyone, we shouldn't. In fact, trying to please others can distract from the One we should be pleasing, if we're not careful. Our chief aim in life is to glorify God and live lives pleasing only unto Him. Nothing else really matters.

Though Paul was certainly mindful of the feelings of others, he wrote: "Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:10, NIV)

Living our lives so as to receive the praise of people around us will only get us into trouble. I think of the chief rulers who "believed in Him [Jesus], but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God." (John 12:42-43). When we become attached to public opinion and pleasing others around us, we will eventually end up denying God.

Don't lose any sleep over it, as long as you're seeking to please the only ONE that really matters!

Psalm 23 For The Workplace

The Lord is my real boss, and I shall not want.

He gives me peace, when chaos is all around me.

He reminds me to pray before I speak and to do all things without murmuring and complaining.

He reminds me that He is my Source and not my job. He restores my sanity every day and guides my decisions that I might honor Him in all I do.

Even though I face absurd amounts of e-mail, system crashes, unrealistic deadlines, budget cut-backs, gossiping co-workers, discriminating supervisors, and an aging body that doesn't cooperate every morning,

I will not stop, for He is with me!

His presence, His peace and His power will see me through. He raises me up, even when they fail to promote me. He claims me as His own, even when the company threatens to let me go. His faith-fulness and love are better than a bonus check.

His retirement plan beats every 401K there is! When it's all said and done, I'll be working for Him a whole lot longer; And for that… I will bless His Holy name!

Making God a Priority

“The first of the first fruits of your land you shall bring into the house of the LORD your God.” Ex 23:19a

One of the values of daily Bible reading is that it keeps individual Bible verses set in their original context. For instance, a favorite verse of Christians regarding God’s faithfulness is Philippians 4:19: “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” While the verse sounds like a blank check from God to us, it isn’t.

The apostle Paul wrote those words to a church that had given sacrificially to him while he was imprisoned in Rome (Philippians 4:10-18). They had put the kingdom of God above their own needs; they had made the advancement of the Gospel through Paul a priority in their lives by providing for Christ’s chief apostle in his dire straits. So Paul tells them, “Because you have sacrificially made God a priority in your life, God will meet your needs.” That doesn’t mean we earn God’s blessing by giving. But it does mean that God looks for those whose “heart is loyal to Him,” on whose behalf He can show himself strong (2 Chronicles 16:9).

Attitude and Circumstances

“I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned

the secret of being content in any and every situation...” Philippians 4:11-13

I love the story of the little boy who was overheard talking to himself as he strutted through the backyard, baseball cap in place, toting ball and bat. He was heard to say, “I’m the greatest hitter in the world.” Then he tossed the ball into the air, swung at it and missed. “Strike one.” Undaunted he picked up the ball, threw it into the air and said to himself, “I’m the greatest baseball hitter ever,” and then he swung at the ball

again. And again, he missed. “Strike two!”

He paused a moment to examine his bat and ball carefully. Then a third time he threw the ball into the air. “I’m the greatest hitter who ever lived,” he exclaimed. He swung the bat hard again, and missed a third time. He cried out, “Wow! Strike three. What a pitcher! I’m the greatest pitcher in the world!”

His circumstances hadn’t changed but his attitude had changed, and that makes all the difference in the world. What difficult time are you going through right now? Is there really something that can change it? If you can do something about it, great; don’t wait another day. But if you can’t change the circumstance, then change your attitude and that will make all the difference in the world.
