WACGC PRESIDENT Terry Sisto, Ford’s Colony Garden Club [email protected] , 757-345-2478

Hello! I hope you enjoyed your summer as it flew by, at least mine did! Although fall doesn’t officially begin until September 22, I am excited to see pumpkins, gourds and mums everywhere.

The Fall WACGC General Meeting will be held on Friday, September 28, 9:30a coffee/10:00a general. The Williamsburg Garden Club is hosting our meeting at Colonial Heritage Clubhouse.

• Tidewater District Fundraiser, Thursday, April 19, 2018, Colonial Heritage Ballroom. See more details in this newsletter. We will keep you updated on this event and future Tidewater District Meetings. See more details in this newsletter.

I want to thank everyone who has volunteered to serve on the 2017-19 WACGC Board. My thanks to our new Newsletter Chair, Linda Wenger, The Williamsburg Garden Club, for taking over this committee. Please send your club activities/events for publication to her at [email protected]. Deadline for submissions is the 20th of each month.

After speaking to many of you we are still in need of someone to chair the Ways and Means Committee. If you would like to get more involved and work with wonderful people while supporting community gardens/projects, please contact me. I can guarantee it will be a rewarding and fun experience.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you again and meeting even more at our Fall meeting. Bring a member(s) who has never attended a WACGC meeting before with you. Don’t forget to bring a little cash as we will continue with the 50/50 and raffle fundraising. Please plan to attend – remember ALL club members are welcome!!

MEET THE NEW BOARD!

The September program for the Council meeting on September 28 will once again be an exciting and informative one. Our speaker will be Robin Seeterlin, Bird’s Eve View Landscape Designs, LLC. You may have met her if you shop Jamestown Feed and Seed. She is a Certified Landscape Designer and a Virginia Horticulturist. Her program, Cut Flowers From Your Landscape, will be a wonderful presentation of ideas of plant materials that will enhance your landscape and also allow for cut flowers throughout the four seasons. She welcomes questions and discussion from her audience.

WACGC TREASURER Ellen Schiavone, Brandon Woods Garden Club [email protected]

Council Treasurer Ellen Schiavone would like to thank those garden clubs who have submitted their 2017-18 dues, and put forth a gentle reminder to those who have not yet sent their dues in. Checks should be made payable to "WACGC" and mailed to her at 3505 Hollingsworth, 23188 before the end of September. Each garden club is responsible for contributing $1.30 per club member with a cap of 80 members. Please note that no statements will be mailed to individual clubs; there was some confusion in past years with incoming club treasurers waiting for a bill from the Council. If you have questions, please contact Ellen at [email protected].

WACGC WILLIAMSBURG WREATH DECORATION Mary Grogan [email protected]

Loy and I met with Will Fidler on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 to discuss the Williamsburg Christmas Wreath Program. We will be decorating 20 wreaths this year. The date that has been chosen to work on the wreaths is Wednesday, November 29 beginning at 9:00a at the Community Building (across from the Regional Library). Will suggests we bring anything we would like as long as it is natural or looks natural. A few suggestions are: cinnamon sticks, lemons, limes, oranges or dried slices of any of the listed fruits. We need to keep in mind they will be on display for 5 weeks. I will also bring some dried hydrangea blossoms. Other items suggested items: oyster shells, magnolia seed pods, or pine cones.

I will be asking for 1 person from each club and then an additional 9 so that each person will be making just one wreath. The tables will be set up just like last year with pictures of where they will be placed and a zip-tie to put on the top.

WACGC HOSPICE HOUSE Dollie Marshall, The Williamsburg Garden Club [email protected]

The following clubs will be responsible for providing arrangements for the entrance table at Hospice House:

• September - Williamsburg Garden Club

• October - Berkeley Garden Club. If you have any questions, contact Dollie Marshall, [email protected], 229-2049.

VFGC TIDEWATER DISTRICT PRESIDENT Glenda Knowles, Berkeley and Colonial Heritage Garden Clubs [email protected], 757-651-0401

SAVE THE DATES!

Tidewater District will be featuring “Fashions & Flowers” on Thursday, April 19, 2018. The day will feature fashions by Chico’s before lunch and the “Dueling Designers” following lunch. David Pippin and Al Brockwell will create designs, side-by-side using similar containers and flowers! Will those designs be offered to our guests? YES! Put this date on your calendar and plan to join us at the Colonial Heritage Clubhouse Ballroom in

Williamsburg for this spectacular day! Tickets are $30 and available now! Contact Glenda Knowles, [email protected], 757-651-0401, or Patsy Cameron, [email protected], 757-575-2155. We expect this event to be a sell-out!!! So, order your tickets NOW.

Fall Tidewater District Meeting – October 30, 2017. Please join us at the Greenbrier Country Club, 1301 Volvo Drive, Chesapeake, VA. for our annual fall general meeting. We are thrilled that Carmen Hegge-Kleiser, Ford’s Colony Garden Club, will present her program “All The Presidents’ White House Gardens”. Carmen presented this program previously to the WACGC and it has become a “program in demand!” Carmen based the program on Marta McDowell’s book and the book will be won by a lucky attendee.

Since this is a business and luncheon meeting, reservations should be sent to the TD Registrar. Please contact Glenda Knowles, [email protected] for a registration form. Attendance at district meetings is a great way to find out what garden clubs around the area are “up to” and to meet other “like minded folks”. Vendors will be available for attendees to shop for garden-related items or a personal item. ALL garden club members are invited. If your club is not a member of the VFGC, no worries - guests are welcome!

VFGC TIDEWATER DISTRICT CALENDAR CHAIRMAN Betty Smith, Toano Garden Club [email protected] , 757-566-2376

The 2018 Vision of Beauty Calendars will be here soon. As in the past, they feature full-page color photos of designs of different types, and the price remains at $6.00 each. I am encouraging each member of garden clubs to purchase at least one calendar. The photos will be helpful in coming up with designs for your own arrangements. The calendars make wonderful gifts for friends and family members. Where else can you purchase such a gift for under $10? The 2018 calendars will be on sale at each Tidewater District and WACGC Board and General meetings. Anyone wanting to place an advance order can contact me by email ([email protected]) or phone call (757-566-2376).

WILLIAMSBURG BOTANICAL GARDEN - OPPORTUNITY TO ARRANGE PROGRAMS Joanne Sheffield [email protected], 301-983-1785

At the end of this year, I will be giving up the Program Chair position for the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. The Garden definitely needs someone willing to take this over. Additionally, that person has the option of serving on the Board.

Program Chair responsibilities include:

• Arranging for speakers for the Adult Learn and Grow Educational Series--one a month January - November on the 3rd Saturday of the month.

• Being there (Interpretive Center-9:15a) to greet and answer questions from the attendees, having the handouts available, and assisting the speaker as needed--other volunteers can help you.

• If the Chairman of the Board is not available, you will be the person to announce WBG happenings and introduce the speaker.

• Seeing that the speaker gets a $50.00 honorarium and writing a follow-up note of thanks.

There are a few additional miscellaneous duties which we can go into if you think you would be willing to take on this project. I would work with you to get 2018 set up. Please let me know if you think you would be interested in this position. Thank you for considering the opportunity!
