Radio reception factors:

• Distance/strength. The further anFM signal travels, the weaker it is.The listenable range of the averageFM station is approximately 40 km(24 miles). This range can beaffected by “signal modulation”.Signal modulation is a processradio stations use to increasetheir strength/volume relative toother stations.

• Terrain. Hills, mountains and tallbuildings between your vehicle’santenna and the radio stationsignal can cause FM receptionproblems. Static can be caused onAM stations by power lines, electric fences, traffic lights andthunderstorms. Moving awayfrom an interfering structure (outof its “shadow”) returns yourreception to normal.

• Station overload. Weak signalsare sometimes captured bystronger signals when you pass abroadcast tower. A strongersignal may temporarily overtake aweaker signal and play while theweak station frequency isdisplayed.

Route guidance precision

Under certain driving conditions, itis possible that the route guidancemay be inaccurate. Some examplesare listed below:

• Deviation from a route may causeincorrect guidance until the routehas been recalculated.

• Route guidance may occasionallybe given where no turn isrequired.

• If there is no road, or only a narrowtrack, to the final destination, guidance will be given to thenearest point possible.

No guidance is given whilereversing.

If driving at high speed or on verydense road networks, it may not bepossible to recalculate the route intime for the next instruction.

On familiar roads, personal routepreferences may not always befollowed.

LATEST MAP DVDsThe traffic network is constantlychanging due to new roads, trafficrestrictions, etc. Therefore, it is notalways possible to exactly matchthe DVD map with the currentroadways.

Map information is regularlyupdated, but all areas are notnecessarily covered to the samelevel of detail. Some areas, inparticular private roads, may not beincluded on the database. To helpwith accuracy, always use the latestversion DVD for navigation.

NAVIGATION SYSTEM GETTINGSTARTED

NAVIGATION SYSTEMPRINCIPLE OF OPERATIONBy collecting the GPS data fromsatellites and combining it with theinformation from road maps storedon a DVD, the navigation systemcan direct the driver accurately to arequired destination. Directions arein the form of maps on the displayand verbal instructions thatoverride other audio sources, e.g.radio or audio CD. The systemworks by looking ahead and itcalculates an ample reaction timebased on your current drivingspeed.

If your vehicle leaves the roadnetwork, GPS will still track yourposition.

Note: If the vehicle battery isdisconnected for any reason, thenavigation system needs to re-scanfor available satellites when thebattery is re-connected. Normallythis will take no longer than threeto four minutes.

Reception of GPS signalsGPS signals are highly directionaland reception may occasionally beinterrupted. Some situations likelyto cause problems are:

• Inside tunnels.

• Inside buildings.

• Roads under raised highways.

• Densely tree-lined roads.

• Forest roads between mountains.

• Between tall buildings.

• Roads under cliffs.

• Large metal objects placed nearthe GPS receiver.

Errors in vehicle positionUnder certain driving conditions, itis possible that the vehicle positionshown may be incorrect. Someexamples are listed below:

• When the vehicle is transportedby ferry or train

• Driving on steep roads

• After vehicle battery removal orsupply fuse failure

• When using snow chains

• After the tyres have been replaced

• After the vehicle has been rotatedon a turntable

• Where there are two roadsparallel to each other

• Elevated roads in proximity toother roads

• Driving up or down circularramps in car parks

The position will usually becorrected automatically. If theproblem persists, see Calibration,or consult your Ford Dealer.

Time and distance todestinationWhen a route is calculated, the.estimated time required to drivethe route, and the total distance tothe destination are determined.

The time is based on the, vehicle.travelling at the current speedsettings for each type of road(residential, main and motorway).

The distance is based on thecurrent route preference settings,e.g. Minimise Toll Road use.

While driving under guidance, theestimated time (if selected) anddistance remaining to the end ofthe route are shown on the screen.

Languages and distance unitsThe screen text and voiceguidance are available in a numberof different languages.

Distances shown on the screen, and given in voice guidance, areeither in Imperial units (miles) orMetric units (kilometres andmetres).

Alternative routesDuring route calculation, up tothree possible routes arecalculated.

The first route is calculated usingthe current route preferencesettings.

The second route is also calculatedusing the preference settings, except that for Minimise Time/

Distance, the alternative setting isused.

For example, if Minimise Time iscurrently selected, then the.second route will be. calculatedbased on Minimise Distance, withthe other settings as selected.

For the third route, the systemtries to find another alternativeusing different combinations of thepreference settings.

If a suitable alternative is notpossible, only the first and secondroutes will be. shown.

Town name listsAfter entering a street name, the.matching town entries found in thedatabase are shown.

Each entry includes some or all ofthe following: district name, townname, and county name.

Road junction layoutsThe layout of complex roadjunctions may sometimes be shownin a simplified form.

Some small roundabouts may notbe shown.

Map DVDsAll the European countriescovered by the system areincluded on the disc supplied.
