It is a MYTH that the SUBVERSIVE book Silent Spring singlehandedly launched the Modern EnvironmentalTerrorMovement.

It would be more accurate to say that the SUBVERSIVE bookSilent Spring wasONE OF MANY signature events in the birth of the Modern Environmental

TerrorMovement in the Western World.

Nonetheless, Silent Spring was one of the FOUNDING EVENTS for the Environ-mentalTerrorMovement.

Even to this day, Si lent Spr ing is blindly seen as an important piece of litera-ture by EnvironmentalManiacActivists.

Undoubtedly, the growing public perception of the adverse environmental ef-

fects of the insecticide DDT was galvanized by the popularity ofSilent Spring .

Consequently, DDT became a prime target of the growing EnvironmentalTer-rorMovement.

The adept use of junk science and politicized science eventually ledto the demise ofDDT in North Amer ica .

THE DEMISE OF DDT

The environmental persistence ofDDT was a government and public concernwell before the launching ofSilent Spring in 1962 .

In 1946, Elmer Higgins and Clarence Cottam wrote about the bioaccumulationofDDT in the fatty tissues of wildlife, in the Journal of Economic Entomol-ogy. Others followed, with similar observations.

Throughout the second half of the DDT years ( 19411972 ), there oc-curred an increasing number of government restrictions on the use ofDDT .

Five years before the publication of Silent Spring , in 1957, the U.S. ForestServ ice had PROHIBITED the application ofDDT in buffer zones located aroundaquatic areas under its jurisdiction.

In 1958 , the U.S. Forest Service began to phase out its use of DDT for thecontrol of Gypsy Moth and Spruce Budworm. Substitutes for DDT were ac-tively sought out.

Nonetheless, during the 1950s and early 1960s, pest control products wereNOT a major concern, and governments in North Amer ica were under limitedpressure to tighten their regulation.

However, there were also increasingly vocal demands from activists for the en-hanced protection of human health and the environment.

Then, the United States Department of Agricul ture ( U.S.D.A. ) lost a fraudcase concerning a pest control product.

Consequently, in 1964, the U.S.D.A. persuaded Congress to allow the denial of

registrations and cancellations of pest control products for reasons of safety oreffectiveness.

As a result, the burden of proof was shifted from the government to the regis-trant, as under the original Federal Insect ic ide, Fungicide, and Rodent ic ideAct ( F.I .F.R.A. ).

Even when well-armed with new authorities, the Pest ic ide Regulat ion D ivision

of the United States Department of Agricul ture was NOT up to the task of deal-ing with pest control products, as their number and usage expanded.

Consequently, the responsibility of administering the Federal Insect ic ide, Fun-gicide, and Rodent ic ide Act ( F.I .F.R.A. ) was transferred to the U.S.Environ-mental Protect ion Agency ( E.P.A. ), which was created by the Executive OrderofPresident Richard Milhous Nixon on December 2 n d , 1970 .

Despite allegations thatDDT harmed bird reproduction by thinning their egg-shells, in 1972, an E.P.A. administrative judge made the following statement

Wil l iam Ruckelshaus , the Administrator ofE.P.A . ( 19701973 ), was an AC- TIVE MEMBERofEnvironmental Defense Fund ( E.D.F. ). For several years,E.D.F. operated as a U.S. EnvironmentalTerrorOrganization that had beenCONSPIRING to instigate a major campaign the prohibitDDT .

During his E.P.A. tenure ( 19701973 ), Ruckelshaus reportedly solicited dona-tions forE.D.F. on his PERSONAL STATIONARY, and issued statements like

Not surprisingly, in 1972 , the U.S. Environmental Protect ion Agency ( E.P.A. )announced aCANCELLATION on virtually all uses ofDDT. In a cascade reac-tion, DDT was also removed from Chi le ( 1985 ), Cuba ( 1970 ), Korea ( 1986 ),Liechtenstein ( 1986 ), Norway and Sweden ( 1970 ), Poland ( 1976 ), Singa-

pore ( 1984 ), Switzerland ( 1986 ), and the United Kingdom ( 1984 ).

In Canada, the federal governmentDID NOT immediately follow the 1972 U.S.decision, but most uses ofDDT were phased out by the mid1970s .

In recent years, the muchneeded production ofDDT has continued in coun-tries like China , India , Indonesia, I ta ly , and Mexico .

Rachel Ray Louise Carson was aU.S. zoologist, marine biologist, spinster,and cancer victim. Rumours have abounded regarding her relationship withher friend Dorothy Freeman. In her youth, Carson originally soughthigher education to study English composition and creative writing, but shechanged her major to marine biology. She eventually earned a Masters degreein zoology in 1932 ( some say1929 ), graduating magna cum laude . Car-son then taught zoology for several years. She also accepted a parttime posi-tion at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries as a science writer. Carson worked on

various projects like cookbooks, radio scripts, and scientific journals. Sheeventually became chief editor of publications.

Clearly, Carson had NO competent expertise, recognized training, or back-ground in matters concerning pest control products.

Carson supplemented her income by writing and publishing her sea trilogy of books

Under the SeaWind Released in 1941, and went unnoticed.

The Sea Around Us Published in 1951, became aNew YorkTimesBESTSELLER foreightyone weeks, and was adapted intoan awardwinning documentary. ( An interesting story follows in

the next segment. ) At this time, Carson gave up her job to pursuewriting as her only occupation.

The Edge of the Sea Emerged in 1955 , some say1956.

Unbeknownst to Carson, her books would inspire one the most enjoyable mo-tion pictures and television series of all time.

The Master of Disaster was I rwin Al len ( 19161991 ), who was a televi-sion and film producer. He gained fame by creating memorable documentaries,motion pictures, and television shows.

Throughout the 1950s, I rwin Al len produced several documentaries, including The Sea Around Us , released in 1952, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature . This movie was basedupon the bestselling book of the same name published byCarson in 1951 .

I rwin Al len was later inspired to create a sciencefiction world based upon the Sea theme.

In 1961, I rwin Al len produced and directed the motion picture Voyage to theBottom of the Sea , which later became the basis for the successful televi-sion series of the same name ( 19641968 ) starring Richard Basehart . En-couraged by the success ofVoyage , Al len went on to create other showssuch as Lost In Space ( 19651968 ), The Time Tunnel ( 19661967 ), and Land of the Giants ( 19681970 ).

The PREMISE of the Voyage motion picture is interesting, given todays in-terest in socalled global warming a meteor shower bombards the Van

Allen Radiat ion Belt , igniting a fire that causes the Earth s tem-perature torise alarmingly. The Earth has a life expectancy of three weeks. Bummer ! The new stateoftheart atomic submarine Seaview is deployed to launcha nuclear missile into the fire in order to extinguish it.

Socalled global warming was sciencefiction in 1961 , and it is still sci-encefiction today.

Even though Carson did not actually singlehandedly launch the Modern

From December 21 s t to 27 t h , 1968, the U.S. Apol lo 8 Command Module flewFROM THE E ARTH TO THE MOON , circled the moon itself ten times, and thenreturned safely to Earth. The Apol lo 8 crew consisted ofFrank Borman, JamesLovel l , and Wil l iam Anders . This was the FIRSThuman journey to the Earth sMoon . It was also the FIRST TIME that the Earth was photographed from aLU-NAR PERSPECTIVE.

As the Command Module orbited the FAR SIDE OF THE MOON , the crew couldsee the Earth appearing to rise on the lunar horizon. It should be notedthat anyone actually standing on the lunar surface would never actually seethe Earthrise , since the Moon always keeps the same side toward the

It is uncertain who coined the term Spaceship Earth , but it was popu-larized by the famous American Inventor and Environmental ist BuckminsterFu l le r ( 18951983 ). The term implies thatEarth, like a spaceship, is vulne-rable and selfcontained, and must be kept in good working condition.

On Apr i l 22 n d , 1970 , Earth Day was launched to create awareness for environ-mental issues. Although there are three types ofEarth Day , Apr i l 22 n d is thedate that most people know as the TRUEEarth Day .

In virtually all Earth Day logos, the Earthrise picture taken by the Apol lo 8crew is the MOST PROMINENT IMAGE representing the Modern Environmental TerrorMovement. NO images ofRachel Carson orSilent Spring .

Furthermore, it is interesting to note thatApr i l 22 n d , 1970 , was the 100 t h Anni-versary of the birth ofVladimir Lenin , the Russian revolutionary and commu-nist politician who led the October Revolut ion of1917.

Lenin may have been MORE OF AN INSPIRATION forEarth Day and the ModernEnvironmentalTerrorMovement than Rachel Carson. Nonetheless, Carsonand Silent Spring did have SOME impact.
