The above poem was written by Geoffrey Chaucer to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King
Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia on May 2, 1381. (When they were married eight months later, they were each only 15 years old.) This began the romantic connection to St. Valentines day.
Readers have uncritically assumed that Chaucer was referring to February 14 as Valentine's Day; however, mid-February is an unlikely time for birds to
be mating in England.. The feast day of St. Valentine had
been celebrated for many centuries to honor two saints, Valentine of Rome who was martyred about AD 269 and Valentine of Terni who was honored around 200 AD. There were no romantic elements in either’s life.
**************************** Sign Up Early
We have a lot of special events
going on this month and we now have a lot of residents. Be sure to check the big calendar in the hall for up to the minute information on date and times and for events that may be added. Until our new hall is built we have limited space available and we can fill up rapidly, so sign up and/or get your tickets early.
*************************** Bus Trip to Laughlin
We have always had a lot of fun
on these overnighter trips. We will spend two nights at the Edgewater Casino/Hotel for a super-low price. If we can fill up the bus we won’t have to make any stops to pick up others, so sign up soon as it might not take long to fill it up.
**************************** Take a virtual trip with Sam Hart
Sam’s slide shows on Tuesdays at
11:00 AM are a great way to see the beauty of Arizona without the long drives and the crowds that choke our national parks now. It will be worth your time.
I want to thank Lala for her invaluable help in the office and at our special events. You will find her in the activity office whenever I’m gone. She will help you with tickets and answer your questions about our activities and events.
Remember that our office hours are 8 AM until noon, Monday through Friday.
