From the Principal’s Desk
What a fantastic couple of weeks we have had! We are so glad to have all of our
students back now. Everyone is busily learning in their classes and demonstrating
our RISE values. There have been some beautiful sunny days and I have seen
classes being taken outside to enjoy this whilst they can. Thank you to all of our parents for your continued support around our current Covid-19
restrictions. We are looking forward to the restrictions being reviewed so that we can have you
back on school grounds and helping in classrooms. It has been wonderful to see how
independent our younger children have become. I encourage you to continue allowing them to
do so after restrictions have lifted. It is an important skillset for children to embrace, and tasks
such as carrying and unpacking their own bag, and remembering to take their items inside, will
set them up well for more independence in later years.
School Chaplain
It is with sadness I pass on to our community that our School Chaplain, Mrs Suzy Anderson, has
made the decision to retire from her position here. Suzy has been such an important part of
our team here and we will miss her dearly.
We all wish Suzy our warmest and best wishes for the next chapter in her life. Thank you, Suzy,
for everything you have done for our school community over the years.
Youthcare are now working to
find our school a new Chaplain.
String Ensemble
Last week I had the best start to my day; listening to our
instrumental strings students playing a mini-concert in
our courtyard in the beautiful sunshine. I could hear the
hard work of IMSS teacher, Mrs Helen Grandage, and the
dedicated practice of students in their performance.
Well done everyone. I am looking forward to hearing you
all play again!
In This Together
This week marks National Reconciliation Week. The
theme this year, In This Together, motivates us all to
work together across our school and country to support
all students through their educational journeys. At this
time in our lives, resilience, relationships and connection
could not be more important.

Library Update
Last week our library received a much needed face-lift with the installation of new carpet. With the furniture being
moved out of the way, Mrs Pumphrey took the opportunity to revamp the floor plan. Our library is looking
wonderfully inviting and vibrant!
New-Look Newsletter
As promised in the last edition, we have moved to electronic newsletters. We hope you enjoy the new format!
Enjoy the long weekend everybody. Stay safe and well.

Designing Catapults The Year 5s of Room 17 used their construction skills to create devices that could fire items. The class looked at what
the best designs are to create a device that can be both accurate and powerful. Students had to calculate their
measurements accurately and find their average score. Our furthest score was 25.7m by Ethan.

RISE Signage New signs have been erected around the school grounds to display our core values here at Albany Primary School. They are a vibrant reminder to students on the importance of the positive behaviour we expect to be consistently demonstrated both inside and outside the classroom. Here are some of our Year 6 students posing with the sign near their classroom.

Virtual Assembly
Last week we had our second ‘virtual’ assembly. The production starts with a recording session of the Student Councillors announcing the Honour Certificate winners, a speech from the Principal, a RISE draw, and sometimes a student skit.
Two of our Councillors Jean and Jerhemy were asked what it is like to be involved in a virtual assembly.
“Virtual assembly is less nerve-wracking than doing it with a live audience. It’s a bit embarrassing while watching yourself on screen though. For me it’s more fun and relaxing. While shooting it’s like you’re an actor making a marvellous movie. I reckon virtual reality is better.” Jerhemy
“To do a virtual assembly is a lot of fun. It’s the same as doing a normal assembly but actually seeing yourself on screen is a lot weirder, as you can see what you could have done differently. You get to have two different films with the Honour Certificates so if you mess up on one of them but you don’t know anyone who is hearing it, you aren’t embarrassing yourself too much.” Jean
We think you are all doing an amazing job – well done!

Poster Competition
Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. They are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.
Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies.
NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country – a history which dates back thousands of generations.
It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.
To celebrate the 2020 NAIDOC theme of ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, all students of
Albany Primary School are invited to design a poster that celebrates this theme.
The artist of the poster judged to have best met the brief will be awarded a prize in
Week Ten of Term Two. All submissions will be exhibited for everyone to enjoy.
Terms and Conditions:
The poster must be A3 size.
The poster must reflect the 2020 theme for NAIDOC Week.
All submissions must be completed entirely by the student.
The judging panel will be looking for effective design, use of colour and
innovation of the theme.
All submissions are due by Monday of Week Nine, Term Two.
Submissions can be left at the front office or delivered to Room 16 to Ms Stein.
The judging panel will be made up of the APS Dreamtime Committee as well as
Aboriginal community members.
Resources to complete the poster can be sourced from school, however this
project will be required to be completed at home as classroom teachers will be
engaged in other NAIDOC related activities.
Get creative people!
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first
engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.
