Sleep may be the single best way to heal our bodies and minds. For women in particular, our brains are wired to need more sleep than men. Studies associate poor sleep with everything from lower metabolism to Alzheimer’s. Interrupted sleep means less time in the deepest stage of non-REM, which is increasingly linked to brain health, memory, and learning, and is essential for physical and mental well-being.

Women suffer from sleep problems at double the rate of men. Changing hormones during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause impact sleep. This includes trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or early awakening, and inability to resume sleep. Other common sleep disorders are sleep-disordered breathing, restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, and narcolepsy.

Sleep problems that affect women more or differently from men include:• Insomnia. More than 1 in 4 women in the United States experience

insomnia, or the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. Insomnia is also more common in people with depression and anxiety, which also affects more women than men.

• Restless leg syndrome. More women than men experience restless leg syndrome. It can happen to women of all ages, but it happens most often during pregnancy. Also, some medicines used to treat depression can cause restless leg syndrome.

• Sleep apnea. Sleep apnea may be underdiagnosed in women. Snoring is one of the main signs of sleep apnea. Women with sleep apnea may be underdiagnosed, because they usually report more general symptoms, such as insomnia, anxiety and nightmares

As women age, physical and hormonal changes make sleep lighter and less sound. Sleep disturbances become more common during menopause. Women wake up more often at night and are more tired during the day. Hot flashes and night sweats linked to lower levels of estrogen may contribute to these problems. During the menopausal years, snoring becomes more frequent. After menopause, women get less deep sleep and are more likely to awaken at night. There are also increased incidents of obstructive sleep apnea in post-menopausal women.

An even greater threat to sleep may be psychosocial stressors such as illness, lifestyle, and sleep environment. Many young women reduce sleep to cope with work and their roles as mothers and wives.

It is important to tell your primary care physician if you feel like you may have a sleep disorder. Most of the diagnosis is based on history, including things that happen during sleep, such as snoring and leg movements. It is important to discuss any disruptive snoring, gasping at night, or difficulty staying awake. Sleep apnea can increase the risk of other diseases, including stroke and heart attack and should be treated if present. While medications may be used to help women get to sleep; losing weight, avoiding caffeine, getting plenty of exercise and overall good sleep hygiene can help in many cases.

SLEEP AND YOUR HEALTH

Take the First Step to a Better Night’s Sleep

Visit CHSleep.org and take our sleep assessment to find out if you

may benefit from a sleep study.

MISSING YOUR ZZZZZS? In-Lab Sleep Study Can Help with DiagnosisAn in-lab sleep study provides a board-certified sleep medicine physician with the most complete evaluation of your sleep. You will be required to stay overnight in our quiet and comfortable sleep center.

During the study, also known as a polysomnogram, brain waves, heartbeats and breathing are recorded as you sleep. The study also charts your eye movements, limb movements and oxygen in your blood. This data will help your doctor make a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.

Members of the sleep team will review and evaluate the information gathered during the sleep study. A sleep technologist will score your sleep study by marking your sleep stages and identifying any events of abnormal breathing or leg movement. The board-certified sleep physician will then review the results to determine what sleep condition may be present.

A board-certified sleep medicine physician may recommend an in-lab sleep study to:• Test for sleep-related breathing disorders including sleep apnea• Evaluate behaviors during sleep • Diagnose narcolepsy or hypersomnia • Measure levels of continuous positive airway pressure in

patients who receive CPAP therapy • Determine why treatment for a sleep disorder is not working

For some patients suspected of obstructive sleep apnea, the sleep physician may recommend a home sleep apnea test instead of an in-lab study. A home sleep apnea test uses equipment that you can set up and then return for evaluation.

An in-lab sleep study is the way to ensure that you have the proper diagnosis for a sleep disorder. Speak with your health care provider if you think you might need a sleep study. For more information on our sleep care program and in-lab sleep studies, call Tracy Corle, sleep lab coordinator at Chestnut Hill Hospital, 215-248-8082.
