Today December 14, 2014 Discovery—The Magnificat: Saying Yes 10am, Trinity Church In the prayer known as The Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), Mary says “yes” to God’s audacious, mind-boggling, world-changing invitation to give birth to the One by whom all will be measured and blessed. In the four Sundays in Advent we will explore how we, like Mary, can access the spiritual resources we need to navigate the places of upheaval, change, and promise in our lives. Thursday, December 18Concerts at One 1pm, Trinity ChurchConcerts at One provides the Lower Manhattan community with the finest professional vocal and instrumental performances of emerging and established artists and features a diversity of music styles, from jazz to classical. The series provides a weekly musical respite for neighborhood residents, downtown workers, tourists, and music lovers. This week: the West Point Band presents a holi-day concert.

Solemn Evensong5:15pm, Trinity Church, All Saints’ ChapelThis service features prayers for the evening, singing portions of the Psalter, Scripture reading, singing the evening canticles, and a brief homily. Most of the service is sung by the congregation, and the Family Choir is present for choral support.

Messiah 7:30pm, Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln CenterTrinity Wall Street presents four performances of Handel’s Messiah this holiday season by the Choir of Trinity Wall Street and Trinity Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Julian Wachner. Tickets for the Trinity Church performances are sold out; Lincoln Center tickets are $85, $65, and $45. A 30% discount for parishioners is available for a limited time. Use CONNECT30 at checkout. You’re Invited: Christmas Pageant Dress Rehearsal10am, St. Paul’s Chapel The Sunday School invites parishioners to attend the open dress rehearsal of the Christmas pageant, so that the whole Trinity family has an opportunity to enjoy it, together, before Christmas Eve. You can also attend the performance during the 4pm Christmas Eve liturgy at St. Paul’s!

’Twas the Night Before Christmas4pm, Church of the Intercession, Broadway at 155th StreetIn 1822, as a Christmas present for his six children, Clement C. Moore wrote the poem that became a classic for all to cherish. Come hear a reading of ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas. A spe-cial musical prelude begins at 3:30pm. The Rev. Dr. Jim Cooper, who has attended every reading during his time as rector, will read the story. After the reading, there will be a lantern procession to Trinity Cemetery and Mausoleum, where a wreath will be laid at the gravesite of Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863), the son of Dr. Benjamin Moore, the sixth rector of Trinity parish. Free and open to the public. The Church of the Intercession is wheelchair acces-sible via the cemetery gate on 155th Street.

Blue Christmas5pm, Trinity Church, All Saints’ Chapel Not everyone experiences the holidays as a time of joy and cheer—this service offers respite from the holiday rush. Trinity’s Prison Ministry6pm-7:30pm, Parish Center, 2 Rector St. At this meeting, Trinity’s Prison Ministry welcomes Larry White, who was released after 32 years in prison and is currently coordina-tor for Hope Lives for Lifers, a program which serves young offend-ers in partnership with American Friends Service Committee (the Quakers). Hope Lives for Lifers works to help youth (16 and older) to make good use of their time while they’re incarcerated. This meeting will also be a celebration of 30th anniversary of Trinity’s Task Force against Racism. Trinity’s Prison Ministry was formed in 2004-2005 to help erase the stigma for formerly incarcerated people returning to society by educating parishioners about how current social structures contribute to crime, how to help those who are incarcerated learn skills or get an education, and how to ease the transition for those returning from incarceration.

Congregational Voice“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over” (Psalm 23:5 KJV). This is my favorite verse. It shows me the protection and comfort of God has over me and all of us! Thanks be to God!
