Beloved,How late this newsletter is coming to you this Christmas! Alas, to much of the world, Christmas is now long over. The

thrill of the season, the anticipation of uniting with friends and family, of gift giving, of home-cooked Christmas tradi-tions, decorations, music – the bells, lights and glee of the season – is, for many, a season past. I remember as a young Jewish woman in New York being enthralled by the beauty of the season, the Salvation Army bells, the hot pretzel and chestnut stands, the lights, the glimmer, the sense that there was purpose on earth for mankind. Certainly it wasn’t my holiday, but something was in the air, something magical it seemed, something that contained an answer to the misery and the mystery of life.

But what was it? How could the human heart ever be filled with what was simply passing on earth? Year after year, my longing for meaning grew deeper and stronger than the sea-son of Christmas in New York could fill. And so it was that each year I left – before Christmas – for some island in the West Indies, and returned after New Year’s, when the lights were again dark, the pretzels were cold, and a being could go on living without particularly having a reason to do so.

The only thing that lingered for me, in a negative, disturb-ing way, was what seemed for many to be the very focus of the season. It was that Baby in the man-ger scene appearing in store windows, church lawns, homes, parks and elsewhere. How, I reasoned, could any responsible parent allow his or her child to wor-ship that Baby – a man, a human being!? God alone is to be worshipped. I grieved at such public display and at the hearts of those who were so led astray.

Blessed be God, who causes the blind to see, the lame to walk, and unbelieving hearts to love.

Oh the unfathomable mystery, that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob should enter time and space, should take on flesh and blood, should become one of us – should be born as a Child – that very Baby in the manger - and then, and then, should be put to death at the hands of those He came to save. Oh unspeakable mystery of grace, the grace of a God who would become Man to die for the sin that separated us from Him – and then – would rise from the dead to give life – all of life – to all – Jew and Gentile – who would put their trust in Him.

It is impossible to over-retell such a love story, as it is im-possible for finite creatures such as we to fully understand the God of all creation who, in becoming Man, never ceased being God – 100% God even as He became 100% Man.

But how? Can a man be God?

A man cannot become God, but God, if He exists, can be-come Man. Cannot the God of the universe who set all things in motion and who created matter out of nothing, do as He wills? Is anything impossible for Him?

Do you recall in Saint Luke’s Gospel, how, after our Lord’s resurrection from the dead, He – the Christ, the Messiah of Israel – was walking along the Road to Emmaus and said to two perplexed and downtrodden disciples (who assumed He was still dead and buried):

“’O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ (Greek translation of Messiah) should suffer these things and enter into His glory?’“And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things con-cerning Himself”(Luke 24:25-27).

What things? What things do you suppose our Lord told those disciples as they walked? We are not told, but He cer-tainly could have told them what the Scriptures, i.e., the Tan-ach (known as the Old Testament), recorded - that the Mes-siah would be:

• the Seed of the Woman who would crush the head of the serpent

• a prophet like Moses• a priest like Melchizedek• a reigning King• That He would be born of a virgin, in the city of Beth-

lehem• That He would perform miracles and minister to both

Jew and Gentile• That He would be called Lord, and the Son of God

• That He would be identified as the stone which the build-ers rejected, who would become the head cornerstone (Psalm 118, sung every Passover)

• That He would – take authority in the Temple – enter Jerusalem on a donkey – be betrayed by a friend – forsaken by His disciples – be crucified and pierced through

• That He would – be raised from the dead – ascend into heaven to be at the right hand of God – have a 2-fold mission – two comings: the first as a Suf-fering Servant; the second as a Reigning King

• That He would bring in a new and everlasting covenant.Over 300 Messianic prophesies were fulfilled at Our Lord’s

first coming – beginning with His birth in a stable, from the womb of a Virgin, in the City of David – i.e., Bethlehem, meaning “House of Bread.”

Bishop Fulton Sheen wrote:“In the filthiest place in the world, a stable, purity was born. He, who was later to be slaughtered by men acting as beasts, was born among beasts. He, Who would call Himself the “living Bread descended from Heaven,” was laid in a manger, literally, a place to eat. Centuries before, Jews had worshipped the golden calf and the Greeks worshipped the ass. Men bowed down before them as before God. The ox and the ass now were present to make their innocent reparation, bow-ing down before their God.”

Who IS this Messiah, this King, this One to Whom all history points, and to Whom one day every knee will bow? Here, beloved, is only a partial list of what is written of Him in the Old Testament and confirmed in the New Testament, or, in the words of Saint Augustine: what is concealed in the Old, and revealed in the New . . .

The Babe in the Manger . . .Is . . . . . . as foretold of old . . . and revealed in the fullness of time.… the Seed

of the Woman“I will put enmity between you and the

woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." (Genesis 3:15)

“And Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I have no husband?’ And the angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.’” (Luke 1:34-35)

… born of a Virgin

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall con-ceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14)

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’

“All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel” (which means, God with us).” (Matthew 1:18-23)

… named before His birth

“Listen to me, O coastlands, and hear-ken, you peoples from afar. The LORD called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name.” (Isaiah 49:1)

“And the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.’” (Luke 1:30-31)

Is . . . . . . as foretold of old . . . and revealed in the fullness of time.… born in

Bethlehem“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who

are little to be among the clans of Ju-dah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. (Micah 5:2)

“. . . for to you is born this day in the city of David a Sav-ior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11)

“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him.’” (Matthew 2:1-2)

… the Savior, Christ the Lord, God Himself

“I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no Savior.” (Isaiah 43:11)

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called ‘Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

“They said to the woman, ‘It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.’” (John 4:42)

… the Creator of all that is

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary, his understanding is unsearchable. (Isa-iah 40:28)

“…all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.” (John 1:3)

… able to raise the dead

“The Lord kills and brings to life; He brings down to Sheol and raises up.” (1 Samuel 2:6)

“For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He will.” (John 5:21)

… Judge over the nations

“Let the nations bestir themselves, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the na-tions round about.” (Joel 3:12)

“For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son also to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of man.” (John 5:27)

… the Light of the world

“The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you by night; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.” (Isaiah 60:19)

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

… the great “I AM”

“God said to Moses, “I AM WHO AM.” (Exodus 3:14)

“Jesus said to then, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abra-ham was, I AM.” (John 8:58)

… the Glory of God

“I am the Lord, that is my name; my glo-ry I give to no other…” (Isaiah 42:8)

“Father, glorify thou me in thy own presence with the glo-ry which I had with Thee before the world was made.” (John 17:5)

… the First and the Last

“Hearken to me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I called! I am He, I am the first, and I am the last.” (Isaiah 4812)

“Fear not, I am the first and the last and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive for evermore…” (Revelation 1:17)

… the Redeemer “Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol? Shall I redeem them from Death? O Death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your de-struction?” (Hosea 13:14)

“…and they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy art Thou to take the scroll and to open its seals, for Thou wast slain and by Thy blood didst ransom men for God from every tribe and tongue and people and nation…’” (Revelation 5:9)

Newsletter Sixteen Page 5

Is . . . . . . as foretold of old . . . and revealed in the fullness of time.… the Bride-

groom“For as a young man marries a virgin, so

shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.” (Isa-iah 62:5)

“And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband…” (Revelation 21:2)

… the Rock “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, in Whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my strong-hold.” (Psalm 18:2)

“…and all drank the same supernatural drink. For they drank from the supernatural Rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:4)

… the Forgiver of Sins

“And no longer shall each man teach his neighbor and each his brother, say-ing, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will for-give their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” (Jeremiah 31:34)

“Why does this man speak thus? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” (Mark 2:7)

… worshipped by angels

“Praise Him, all His angels, praise Him, all his Host!” (Psalm 148:2)

“And again, when He brings the first-born into the world, He says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship Him.’” (Hebrews 1:6)

… the Creator of the angels

“Let them praise the name of the Lord! For He commanded and they were cre-ated.” (Psalm 148:5)

“. . . for in Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or domin-ions or principalities or authorities—all things were cre-ated through Him and for Him.” (Colossians 1:16)

... confessed as LORD

“By myself I have sworn, from My mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To Me ev-ery knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.’” (Isaiah 45:23)

“…that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10)

Wow, Mother Miriam, I can understand that all those prophesies are true of Christ, but I never really applied them all to Our Lord as a Child in the Manager.

I know, dear Zelda. It is “human” of us to sometimes think Christ became all He was meant to be as He grew. But no. Our Lord indeed was Lord at His birth. He never ceased being God, but rather held the world together from that Manger. It was a holy priest who wrote the words to the world’s most beloved Christmas hymn:

Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin Mother and Child,

Holy Infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar,

Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia. Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light, Radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Silent night, holy night, wondrous star, lend thy light; With the angels let us sing,

Alleluia to our King. Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.

Mother Miriam, what can we do? I mean, what can we do this Christmas (which, I know, for you and for many others, ends on February 2nd, the Feast of the Presenta-tion of Our Lord in the Temple). What can we do to keep the Christ of Christmas in our hearts and in our homes each day throughout the New Year – to truly worship Him as He is worthy to be worshipped? We try so hard, but life happens and we get distracted with so many things, both good and bad.

That is true for all of us, dear friend. There are numerous things we can do such as particpating in the celebration of Holy Mass more frequently, especially as a family; going to the Sacrament of Confession more frequently as well; read-ing the Scriptures together, praying together as a family, es-pecially the family Rosary, even singing together!

Mother, don’t you have a special ministry helping families to set up a prayer table in their homes? It sounds like such a great idea. Is that something you can help us to do?

Yes, and I would love to. It is the first thing we try to bring to families, even those who have never before prayed togeth-er as a couple or family – even those who are not Christian! What a wonderful and life-giving presence such a prayer ta-ble is, not only for the family, but for guests and even strang-ers who may visit.

Below is an old fashioned picture which I have loved for some time. It is of a Catholic family praying the Rosary be-fore their prayer table at home. Oh the miraculous stories that have occurred by families praying together at home. It was Father Patrick Peyton, known as “the Rosary priest”, who first said, “The family that prays together, stays together.” Okay, let’s give it a try!

Setting up a Family Prayer Tablefit for the Newborn King, who is the Risen Christ!

1. Find a spot in your home that is somewhat central to the entire family – a place where you can gather for prayer each morning and/or night.

2. Your prayer “table” can be a separate small table set against a wall. It can be a separate shelf on the wall or in a cabinet or bookcase, the top of a mantle, etc.

3. Clothe your prayer table or shelf with some lovely cloth or doily on which to place your cherished items.4. If your table is against a wall, you might hang a Crucifix or holy picture above it. On the table you might arrange

a statue of Our Lord, the Blessed Mother, perhaps your favorite saint along with some candles, flowers, rosaries, holy medals, and other, even handmade, items.

Truly, beloved, it is as simple as that. We have found that the presence of a prayer table in the home changes the atmosphere, lifts hearts to God at the most unexpected moments, and brings a sense of grace and peace to the home and family that begins to pray even one Hail Mary together each day in the presence of what will quickly become a favorite prayer “haven”.

Below are three most dear families we have visited – the Sirkis’, the Berbee’s, and the Putnam’s – each by their prayer “table” – one on a lit cabinet shelf, one in the middle of the living room on their coffee table in the midst of their home renovation!, and one against their wall – each testifying to the blessed grace present in the home when the family comes to-

gether for prayer, most especially the nightly Ro-sary. Some begin their prayer adventure with three Hail Marys, increasing in time to one decade of the Rosary, and to the full Rosary in time.

It seems, Mother, that these fam-ilies all have the same image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on their prayer tables. Is there something special about that?

That is because in our apostolate as Handmaids of the Family, we bring a blessed Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe to each home we visit, monthly for three days. When we return on the third day to take Our Lady back to the Priory, the family will put a statue or image of the Blessed Mother, of Our Lord, or other holy picture in its place.

The small bowl of beads in front of the Shrine is a very wonderful way for the children to offer their (secret!) good deeds to Our Lord through Our Lady. With each good deed that a child does voluntarily (which only the child and Our Lord know) he or she puts a bead or mar-ble in the little bowl as an offering to Our Lady, who in turn gives it to her Son. Because the beads are all the same, no one knows who may have put in the greater amount. It is a wonderful way for the children to strive to please God by loving and obeying their parents, helping their siblings and friends, and perhaps doing a good turn for a schoolmate or stranger. How wonderful – I’m going to set up a prayer table in my own home, even though I’m single. It will help me to come more often to our Lord and our Lady in prayer and will be good preparation for the family I hope to have one day!

Great. And for all who wish further assistance in helping to make their home – the “domestic church” – truly a place of prayer as a family, I highly recommend the book titled, “The Little Oratory: A Beginner’s Guide to Praying in the Home”. It is written by David Clayton and Leila Marie Lawler and published by Sophia Institute Press. You can pur-chase it on line and most probably at any Catholic book store. It is the best resource for the home I have seen.Mother Miriam, can you tell us how things are going in Tulsa? You mentioned in your last newsletter that you were having discernment retreats over the summer. Are you planning to take in new women soon? And what about the floods you’ve been having in the Priory?

We are in the midst of having French Drains installed both in the front and back of the Priory – in order to be ready for the six women who will enter on January 16th! We have much work to do between now and then, including repairing

a great deal of the damage that the waters reaped inside the Priory – but it looks like we’ll be ready just in time!

Just a small note – that what we thought would be a cost of $6,000 has turned out to be $20,000! Oy! That does not include the repairs to the inside of the Priory (floors, furniture, etc.) which our insur-ance covered. But the outside is ours to pay. We trust our Lord to supply our every need, and are so very grateful for the un-speakably generous volunteers who have

assisted in so many magnificent ways.I am truly grateful for every moment, even for every setback,

for every trial, for every joy, and for all that is yet ahead that en-ables us to live for the One who gave, and who continues to give, His all for us. The darker this world becomes, the more grateful I am for the Light of the Gospel that shines more brightly in the darkness. I am grateful for being alive – for the unspeakable hap-piness and privilege of being a religious and sign of hope to the world “for such a time as this”, and, with you, for the enormous gift of faith that enables us to spread the Gospel of our Lord and the truths of His glorious Church to all we meet.

And I am grateful, deeply grateful, for all of you who assist us in reaching a lost world and in helping to restore God’s de-sign for the family – while there is yet time. The enclosed CD of Bishop Fulton Sheen is our gift to you this blessed season, for all your prayers, your gifts, your support of this venture in countless ways.

Our love, gratitude, and prayers for each of you and your loved ones for a holy and blessed Christmastide and New Year,

Mother Miriam of the Lamb of God, O.S.B.P. S. The enclosed flyer/donation sheet includes a way for us to thank you for your donations with several gifts of your choice. Just a thought – that the absolutely beautiful statue of “Mary, Mother of the Life Within” would make a most beautiful and fitting centerpiece for any prayer table!

What Child Is This? What child is this, who, laid to rest,

On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,

While shepherds’ watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:

Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The Babe, the son of Mary.

Why lies He in such mean estate, Where ox and ass are feeding?

Good Christians, fear, for sinners here The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spears shall pierce Him through, the Cross he bore for me, for you.

Hail, hail the Word made flesh, the Babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh, Come, peasant, king, to own him.

The King of kings salvation brings, Let loving hearts enthrone him.

Raise, raise a song on high, The Virgin sings her lullaby Joy, joy for Christ is born,

The Babe, the Son of Mary.

This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:

Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The Babe, the son of Mary.

Daughters of Mary, Mother of Israel’s Hope has been blessed to acquire an exquisite replica of beautiful statues that sit only two places in the world, Fatima, Portugal and Washington, NJ. Designed by renowned artist Joe DeVito, this is a wonderful gift, and a wonderful addition to any home.

This stunning 14” ivory colored statue is a prayerful reminder of the Sanctity of Life. Rich with symbolism, it is a beautiful and subtle reminder of the value of all life, especially the unborn.

This magnificent statue, including shipping, is our gift to you for your donation of $100 or more.

“Here is the incredible faith journey of a singularly inspiring woman. Mother Miriam of the Lamb of God (formerly Rosalind Moss) tells the unexpected tale of her life – from Conservative Jewish woman in New York to evangelical mission-

ary to prioress of a new religious community in Oklahoma. Her amazing testimony will strengthen you and help you believe that Jesus Christ is in fact the long awaited Messiah.”

The CD includes a special excerpt from Dr. Brandt Petrie on the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist.

What Every Couple Should Know about Marriage and Prayer—Our gift to you with this newsletter! However we have additional copies for those who wish to receive them for loved ones, as anniversary gifts, etc.

From the website of Lighthouse Catholic Media:“What is the secret of a successful marriage? How can couples deepen their commitment to one another in Christ? Beloved Catholic orator, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen illuminates the path by focusing on the essential role that prayer must play in every marriage. His anecdotes and stories illustrate his points and make his teachings more memorable and more easily applied to everyday life.”

It is said of Michael John Poirier (prayerbreaks.org), the composer and recording artist of these two CDs, that his music is “contemplative in sound and prayerful in nature – and that as he travels the country with his family, performing at parishes and numerous events, he explores themes of faith, doubt and suffering with a quiet and intense honesty.” We utterly agree and have found in Michael John a soul of rare beauty and sensitivity whose music and lyrics often move one to tears, to joy, to courage, and to faith. These CDs will be a treasure for your entire family (from tots to teenagers to the elderly) for many Advents and Christmases to come!

The Church is a family – a family of families, as was Israel – and the primary means our Lord has established to build His Kingdom. “The family,” wrote Pope Leo XIII, “is the cradle of civil society, and it is for the most part in the surroundings of the home that the destiny of states is prepared. Those who wish to tear society away from Christianity go to the very roots and endeavor to corrupt the family.” That is just what is occurring in our day and what is at the heart of the DVD, “The Family: A Sacrament to the World.”
