During this presentation, we will overview the various services offered in the
KUWC, including live tutoring, Q&A, workshops, writing reference library, ELL
and Fundamentals outreach, and the Effective Writing Podcast series. We will
also specifically focus on what to expect from a video paper review and how
students can use their video feedback to revise their work.
2
Finding Writing Center
You can access the KUWC and its services by clicking “My Studies” on your KU
Campus home page. After clicking My Studies, click on Academic Support
Center.
3
On the main Academic Support Center page, you will see the Writing Center
links. These include Live Tutoring, Paper Review and Q&A Services, the Writing
Reference Library, Citation Guidelines, Workshops, English Language Learner
and Fundamental writing help, Graduate Student Resources, Effective Writing
Podcasts Series, and First-Term Student Resources. Notice, you can access
the Kaplan Guide to Successful Writing on the right hand side in both print and
audio form.
4
Connect with the KUWC’s new public webpage. You can actually Google and
find this page. Many of our resources are here, and you can also connect to
the KUWC via Facebook and Twitter on this page. Stay tuned to these social
media sites too, for information about the KUWC’s 10th anniversary celebration
this year!

Live Tutoring
The KUWC currently offers 28 hours of tutoring, available seven days a week!
Please note that most tutoring sessions are 10-20 minutes. If there are other
students waiting for a session, you may be asked to limit your session to 20
minutes. Please note that our hours may change, so please see click the link to
see our most current hours of operation.

Please come prepared for your tutoring session. For example, if you want help
with a thesis statement, then you should come with a working thesis statement
so that you and your tutor will have a starting place. Also, it is helpful if you
have your assignment open, so you and your tutor can refer to the assignment
directions. Please have a plan and agenda for your session. Please note that
due to the time limit placed on tutoring sessions that tutors are not able to read
and review entire projects during live tutoring. We can help you brainstorm
before you write the first draft in live tutoring with other stages in the paper
writing process as well.
Please come prepared.
• Example: Come with a working thesis written out so that can be a starting
place for working on a thesis statement. Because sessions are limited to
approximately 20 minutes, tutors are NOT able to review entire projects during
live tutoring. Please submit your assignment to our paper review service for a
holistic review.

Question & Answer Service
Students and faculty are also encouraged to use our question and answer
service [email protected]. Questions submitted to this service are answered
with 24 hours Monday-Friday and 48 hours on the weekends. This service is
most helpful when students and faculty need quick answers to questions that
have definite answers. For any writing question, but it is most helpful when you
have a quick question that requires a definite answer:
• Do you include the page number when you cite a paraphrase?
• Do you generally include the thesis in the introductory paragraph?
8
Workshops
The KUWC also offers interactive, live workshops every month. Each month,
the workshops focus on a different theme such as the writing process, research
and citation, and academic writing. The current month’s workshop schedule
can be located on the Writing Workshops page. All workshops are recorded and
archived, so students and faculty can view them later. All workshops are 30
minutes to one hour long.
9
The Writing Reference Library is comprised of a variety of multi-media
resources which are accessible to faculty and students 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week. Tutors will often refer students to these resources, and students are
encouraged to review these resources and then follow –up with practice with a
live tutor.
10
ELL and Fundamentals Programs
The KUWC has a couple of programs targeted to specific populations at Kaplan
University. The ELL program is designed to assist students whose native
language is not English. Find tips on advanced language learning, word order,
Standard American English, and a host of other writing topics.
In addition to the resource library, the ELL program also offers personalized
language plans, workshops, and individual tutoring. The Fundamentals
program enrolls students who need assistance with writing basics. Students in
the Fundamentals program may meet weekly with a tutor to practice their
writing skills and discuss their progress as writers. You can also explore
tutorials on the writing process, cubing, paragraphing, sentence structure,
commas, editing, proofreading, and sample papers to revise and edit.
For more information about the ELL program, please contact Chrissine Rios at
[email protected] For more information about the Fundamentals program,
please contact Kyle Harley at [email protected]
.

Effective Writing Podcast Series
The Effective Writing Podcast series offers podcasts on a wide variety of writing
topics such as the writing process, argumentative writing, citation, plagiarism,
and common grammatical concerns. Students and faculty are encouraged to
subscribe to a RSS feed via Mozilla Firefox or iTunes.

Paper Review and Videos
The best time to do a paper review in the Kaplan University Writing Center is
after you have written your first draft. When you come to us early, we can help
you the most by helping you with the structure of your paper. Many students
send papers at the last minute because they want us to simply proofread their
paper. However, KUWC writing tutors do not simply proofread the paper for
you; we want to help you learn to write and proofread your own papers. Since
you can come to the Writing Center 6 times a term, you can submit a first draft,
then submit a later draft if you need further help on an assignment. Tutors will
typically complete video reviews, although there are times when students may
receive a written only review. If you receive a written review, and you would
like to request a video review, let us know, and we should be able to do a video
review within a few days.
Paper Review
Submit writing for holistic feedback
Receive suggestions for global (whole paper) issues and patterns of
local (sentence-level) issues
Does not have to be final draft

Video review
Same typed marginal comments, now with video
Video linked in email when you receive paper with comments
13
Submitting a Paper for Review
If you would like a paper review, please send your assignment
[email protected]. Please be aware that the paper review service generally
takes 48-72 hours, or 2-3 days, so you are asked to plan your submissions
accordingly. Check your submission:
Always submit from your KU email address (one click within KU
Campus).
Tell us your name, email address, course and section number, and
questions or concerns (thesis, citations, paragraph development).
Attach your work as MS Word, PPT, or Rich Text Format. Please also
be sure to double check to ensure your paper is attached.

Paper Review Submission Tips

No plagiarism detector
Advice for preventing plagiarism
Six project limit
Use Q&A and Live Tutoring for smaller questions while composing and
revising.

We review the first 10 pages
Only one project per email
15
Receiving a Review
When you receive a review, here are some things to keep in mind. These
things will help you access the review and revise your paper.
Open attachments in the email provided.
There is likely a feedback form, which provides many helpful links on
one page.
Your project is there with comments in margins.
Open video link provided. It may be either linked in same email with
attachments or in separate email from tutor
Begin by watching video. You may wish to do the following:
Jot down notes
Pause, rewind, re-watch as necessary
16
Example Marginal Comments –
Whether you receive a written only review or a video review, your reviewed
paper will always include marginal comments. Tutors highlight the word/areas
they want to draw your attention to and then provide comments, often with links
to the KUWC. Tutors do not make changes in your work, as any changes in
your writing should be your decisions.

Please click on this link and take a couple minutes to listen to tutor Molly’s
video feedback.
18
Revising after Review
Review notes and questions taken while watching video.
If necessary, reply to tutor and/or visit Live Tutoring for clarification on
feedback.
Make a “to do” list for revision.
Note tasks by time they take or how important they are to the whole
paper.
Think global issues such as thesis/central argument, organization,
paragraph development, first.
19
Revise Globally and Locally
Global issues include thesis statement, paragraph order and development,
synthesis and analysis of sources
Vs. local issues like comma splices, fragments, punctuation, spelling,
etc.
Do not forget local issues!
Can interfere with meaning
Academic writing = formal, polished writing
For more information, check out Editing and Revising tutorial
20
Example To Do List
1. Change central argument to include main points from body paragraphs.
2. Find more sources for second main point.
3. Check citation format for a journal article found online and revise in-text
and reference page citations.
4. Review semicolon use and check sentences using semicolons.
