Moving the yellow line – autumn supply

• Better pastures in spring

• More crop stubble (crop:pasture %)

• Chaff heaps

• Standing fodder crop

• Swath grazing

• Fodder shrubs

• Perennial pastures

• Summer fodder crops

Grassy pastures

• Very upright, available and productive

• Very nitrogen responsive

• But how do we create them?

• Sow “fancy” late maturing types?

• Use weedy paddocks coming out of crop?

• Have some longer term grassy pastures?

• Just use cereals?

Nitrogen

• Need a dense grassy pasture or cereal

• ~10 kg/ha per unit of N in winter

• At $650/ton of urea, cost of feed is $140/ton

• ~20 kg/ha per unit of N in spring

• At $650/ton of Urea, cost of feed is $70/ton

Take home messages

1. Overcoming the challenges of the summer autumn feed gap is critical to achieving high levels of livestock profitability on most farms in southern WA.

2. Using a combination of management strategies that decrease livestock demand and increase feed availability at this time of the year is important.
